In Part 1 of our interview with Dr. Silverman, we explore how giftedness and dyslexia interact, and dig into the details of what psychologists are looking for when you bring your child in for a dyslexia assessment.

Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical and counseling psychologist. She directs the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiary, the Gifted Development Center (GDC) in Denver, Colorado, which has assessed over 6,500 children in the last 40 years. This is the largest data base on the gifted population. She and her colleagues at GDC have developed 40 instruments. For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver (DU), in Counseling Psychology and Gifted Education. She developed a course on Assessment of the Gifted at DU, which was also a short course taught abroad. She has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books, including the textbook, Counseling the Gifted and Talented, adopted at 50 colleges. Her latest book, Giftedness 101 (Springer, 2013), contains a chapter on assessment. It has been translated into Korean and Swedish.

We were honored to sit down with Dr. David Hurford, who has researched dyslexia and the science of reading for his entire career, to learn about his research, his books, and his work with dyslexic children.

David P. Hurford, Ph.D. is the executive director of the Center for Reading and is the founder and manager of the Center for the Assessment and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (CARRD, Inc.) a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals with dyslexia to become competent readers. He has been publishing on the identification and remediation of reading difficulties and related topics since the late 1980s. He has authored reading curricula designed to prevent reading difficulties in kindergarten (Secret Codes) and first grade (Advanced Codes). The Center for Reading and CARRD, Inc. use his identification and remediation strategies to provide high- quality and accurate assessments and successful interventions for children and adults who have dyslexia and reading difficulties. He contributed to the writing of the Kansas Blueprint on Literacy (SB 438) which was passed into law last April. He serves on the Literacy Advisory Committee that was formed from that legislation. Hurford’s interests include dyslexia, reading difficulties, attentional difficulties including ADHD, educational research, statistics, and special education law.

For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver (DU), in Counseling Psychology and Gifted Education. She developed a course on Assessment of the Gifted at DU, which was also a short course taught abroad. She has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books, including the textbook, Counseling the Gifted and Talented, adopted at 50 colleges. Her latest book, Giftedness 101 (Springer, 2013), contains a chapter on assessment. It has been translated into Korean and Swedish.

Diane hails from Delaware, where she spent her formative years playing sports, honing her big sister skills, and escaping into books to lessen her feelings of shyness. She credits Mary Poppins, her mom, and her favorite teacher Mr. DiBartolo for inspiring her to be a teacher. In high school, Diane found music and credits Joni  Mitchell with saving her soul with Blue. She got her undergraduate degree in elementary education with a minor in special education and her master's degree from the University of New Hampshire in the Teaching of Reading and Writing. 

Diane taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Friends School for about 25 years. She’s been teaching at Friends Middle School for seven years. She loves the younger learners because of their wide-eyed curiosity, fascination with everything, and their hugs. She loves the older learners because of their intellectual curiosity, their bravery in working to figure out who they are in the world, and their humor. Diane says, “I’m passionate about learning and teaching, especially the reciprocity of those things. I feel most energized when I’m digging into a new concept or topic. And I love finding a way to share my new knowledge with my students.”

Diane plays guitar and likes to sing. She fills journals with writing, drawings, and collage. She is an amateur bird watcher and is working on perfecting her black-capped chickadee call. She loves Boulder for the Rocky Mountains, the multitude of hiking trails, and the 300 days of sunshine each year.

Diane hails from Delaware, where she spent her formative years playing sports, honing her big sister skills, and escaping into books to lessen her feelings of shyness. She credits Mary Poppins, her mom, and her favorite teacher Mr. DiBartolo for inspiring her to be a teacher. In high school, Diane found music and credits Joni  Mitchell with saving her soul with Blue. She got her undergraduate degree in elementary education with a minor in special education and her master's degree from the University of New Hampshire in the Teaching of Reading and Writing. 

Diane taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Friends School for about 25 years. She’s been teaching at Friends Middle School for seven years. She loves the younger learners because of their wide-eyed curiosity, fascination with everything, and their hugs. She loves the older learners because of their intellectual curiosity, their bravery in working to figure out who they are in the world, and their humor. Diane says, “I’m passionate about learning and teaching, especially the reciprocity of those things. I feel most energized when I’m digging into a new concept or topic. And I love finding a way to share my new knowledge with my students.”

Diane plays guitar and likes to sing. She fills journals with writing, drawings, and collage. She is an amateur bird watcher and is working on perfecting her black-capped chickadee call. She loves Boulder for the Rocky Mountains, the multitude of hiking trails, and the 300 days of sunshine each year.

While serving as a consultant to the Santa Barbara Unified School District, Cheri established a Parent Resource Center, monthly “Dyslexia Dialogues” and the annual “Distinguished Dyslexic Speaker Series.” She collaborated with the Santa Barbara Public Library and produced several dyslexia-oriented events there as well. She was named a “Local Hero” by the Santa Barbara Independent for her fearless efforts on behalf of students with dyslexia, and awarded a Resolution from the California State Assembly for her dyslexia work. She currently serves as the Director of The Dyslexia Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness, providing resources, and encouraging action about dyslexia.

Cheri continues to work with parents leading parent empowerment seminars to help them advocate for their dyslexic children, writes articles, and shares the trials and tribulations of DyslexiaLand as a public speaker. Her dyslexia-related assemblage art has been featured in several galleries.

Today we talk with middle school science teacher Kevin Nugent about his teaching philosophy and approach to teaching kids with dyslexia and other learning differences.

Kevin Nugent has been part of the teaching team at Friends Middle School, in Boulder, Colorado, since its inaugural class. He believes the role of a middle school teacher is to help the learner explore their passions while preparing them for the academic and social emotional opportunities that lie ahead. He “sees” the learner, not only academically, but as a dynamic, perpetually changing and evolving person.

Kevin graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication, and completed the Stanley British Primary Teacher Preparation Program, teaching preschool through 8th grade science and other content areas in numerous capacities ever since.
He also worked at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science where he created a professional development program for elementary teachers (funded by the Colorado School of Mines) on the neurologic benefits of integrating movement-based learning to improve classroom outcomes.
He was also a founding member of the Montessori School of Denver middle school program, presented workshops at GESTEM (Girls Exploring Science Technology Engineering and Math), and was the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award at the 2016 and 2021 Denver Metro Regional Science Fair (DMRSEF) and also in 2021 at the state level.

And–important to our family– he was our daughter’s science teacher for three years.
