Meg’s journey began far from the sea. After building a successful career on Madison Avenue, she made the bold decision to step away and pursue a lifelong dream: sailing around the world. In 2013–14, she competed in — and won — the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, an experience that reshaped her understanding of teamwork, resilience, and global interconnectedness.

Today, Meg blends her offshore experience with her background in communications, leadership, and diplomacy to help international brands, governments, NGOs, and events develop sustainable strategies and inclusive communities. She holds an MBA from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where she deepened her focus on sustainability, governance, and global systems.

Meg currently serves as Marketing Chair for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and leads sustainability initiatives across the maritime and sporting industries. Her work emphasizes collaboration, cultural understanding, and the role sport and sailing can play in advancing environmental and social progress.

Rima’s love for the sea began in childhood along the coastlines of the Philippines, where watching vessels pass sparked a dream that never faded. After college, she began her maritime career in 2005 working on a ferry, earning onboard promotions before becoming Chief Officer in the local shipping industry. In 2010, she joined Tidewater as a trainee Second Officer and continued to rise through the ranks, promoted to Chief Officer in 2013.

In 2019, Rima made the difficult decision to step away from sailing to focus on family. But the call of the sea remained strong. With the support of her husband and family, she returned to Tidewater in 2022 — and in 2025, while working in Ghana, she received an unexpected email that would change her career: she had been promoted to Master.

In July 2025, Captain Rima took command of her first vessel, Pacific Gull, in Walvis Bay, Namibia. Today, she leads a diverse, multinational crew with humility, professionalism, and a strong commitment to equality, safety, and respect onboard.

As a leader, Captain Rima is clear about her priorities: zero tolerance for bullying or harassment, open communication with her crew, and leading without privilege. She believes trust is built through consistency, fairness, and presence — not rank alone.

Deb has built her career at the intersection of engineering, energy, and climate. A licensed Professional Engineer in both Colorado and Texas, she holds degrees in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and an MBA — a foundation that has enabled her to lead across operators, consulting, and analytics firms such as S&P Global.

Today, Deb runs Swan Mountain Advisory, where she helps organizations navigate the rapidly changing world of carbon management, including emissions reduction, financed emissions, transition risk, and the evolving carbon markets landscape. Her voice is widely sought after, and she has addressed international audiences at CERAWeek, International Energy Week, APPEC, and more.

Her leadership extends into board service as well — with positions at AlphaX Decision Sciences, Geofinancial Analytics, and 1089.inc, where she advises on AI integration, methane data analysis, and carbon market methodologies. She is also faculty at the University of Colorado Denver, teaching “Carbon Markets for Business.”

Phoebe calls herself a mountain girl at heart with a sailing problem. Her love for sailing began at age 14 on Lake Tahoe, racing with her stepfather aboard a Melges 24. But that early spark evolved into something much bigger: a calling to live fully, challenge limits, and connect people to themselves and the sea.

In 2020, Phoebe made a life-changing decision. She left her job as a legal assistant to pursue sailing full-time, chasing her passion for adventure and teaching. Today, she holds both a USCG Master’s MMC and a commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certification, and has worked on vessels ranging from 72-foot adventure yachts to quick little dinghies used for sail training.

For Phoebe, sailing is far more than a skill or a job—it’s a medium for personal transformation. Whether navigating through remote stretches of ocean or leading crews through challenging conditions, she finds fulfillment in helping others safely live out their wildest sailing dreams.

Her philosophy is rooted in the belief that crew work, selective adversity, and adventure have the power to connect us—to the environment, to each other, and to ourselves.

Samantha’s path began in the U.S. Coast Guard, where she served on active duty as a Marine Inspector in Houston, TX, leading teams through Flag State and Port State Control examinations. From there, she moved into sailing commercially as a deck officer aboard U.S. Flag vessels, including tankers, passenger ships, and research vessels.

In 2015, Samantha transitioned shoreside, taking on operations and commercial management roles with Siem Car Carriers and later Maersk, where she held multiple leadership positions in trade and product management. In 2024, she joined Kongsberg Maritime, where she now leads new construction sales for the North American passenger vessel segment.

With a B.S. in Marine Transportation from Texas A&M and an MBA from Northeastern University, Samantha brings both technical expertise and business acumen to her work. She is passionate about the intersection of innovation, sustainability, and international trade—and about mentoring and coaching high-functioning teams to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

Hayley's offshore career began with a spark—her first trip with Gardline as a Marine Mammal Observer in 2006—which ignited a passion for the marine environment. Since then, she’s charted a path through the complex world of offshore wind farm construction, submarine telecommunications, and even Antarctic scientific observation. From working on Greenpeace's Esperanza, to supporting the British Antarctic Survey in the remote South Georgia islands, Hayley's experience is nothing short of extraordinary.

Her story is not only technical—it’s personal. In our conversation, Hayley reflects on how early exposure to STEM (think sandcastles, boat rides, and her first PC) laid the groundwork for a life connecting people across oceans. She also opens up about her time as a freelance surveyor and offshore site manager, navigating a male-dominated field with tenacity and grace.

Now, with over a decade of offshore work behind her, Hayley is leveraging her experience to advocate for sustainability, playing a pivotal role in global initiatives such as the UN Corporate Data Group and ASN’s fish aggregating device mitigation strategy. During this interview, Christine MacMillan and Christalove discuss what life is like in Ghana, what loyalty and community mean to her, and the struggles of making her way in the industry that hasn't always been inviting. 

She shares her belief that technical competence can be trained, BUT behavioral competence is the values learned in the home. She thinks more emphasis should be placed on finding quality individuals with strong behavioral competence and then training them to be technically competent. 

She also shares a personal story about how generalizations hurt. Many Western cultures lump all African nations into a single category, and this has detrimental consequences when seeking quality mariners in the untapped reserves of the world.

Kicking off this season, Christine MacMillian sits down with our first guest for the season, Rachel Pagonis, a Safety Officer onboard a cruise ship with over a decade of experience at sea.

Rachel shares how her love for the water started unexpectedly, when she took a cruise at 14 years old, she thought working on a ship would just be a stepping stone while she figured out her future. Little did she know, it would become her dream career.

Along the way, she met someone who changed her perspective, a woman named Lucy, who was unapologetically herself and never tried to fit into anyone else’s mold. Lucy’s authenticity inspired Rachel to fully embrace her path and chase her career at sea.

Now, as a leader in the industry, Rachel is passionate about mentoring and investing in those coming up behind her, becoming a "Lucy" for the next generation of women+ in maritime.

They are three generations of marine scientists connected through marine research and education. Isabelle, a world-renowned marine ecologist, was Chantale’s PhD advisor and had a big impact on her ideas in marine ecology and conservation. Noelle and Lauren met while studying coral reef ecology during a field course in Curaçao – that was taught by Chantale! Their paths have all remained intertwined over the years, united by a passion for marine conservation. They have committed their lives to understanding, protecting, and sharing their passion for the Ocean. Competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is one more platform for them to draw attention to ocean protection, and to support the people and organizations on the front lines of the fight for our ocean.

The World's Toughest Row: The Salty Science team recently completed the world's toughest row, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. This grueling race tested their endurance, resilience, and teamwork. Despite the challenges, they emerged victorious, coming in first place. Their journey not only showcased their incredible physical and mental strength but also raised significant awareness for ocean science.

In 2011, she became the first female Captain at G&H Towing Company and holds pilotage in major ports like Los Angeles, Long Beach, Galveston, and Houston. In 2022, she joined SpaceX, overseeing the safe recovery of Falcon rockets and fairings.

Passionate about diversity and inclusion, Captain Price aspires to become a Harbor Pilot on the Texas Gulf Coast. Outside her maritime career, she is an EMT, Captain of the city’s Volunteer Fire Department, a nationally ranked United States Master swimmer, and a CrossFit enthusiast. Madeleine graduated from CalMaritime in 2015, joined the MMP union, and has sailed on both liner and tramp ships for nine years. Despite a restrictive 217-day shipboard period, she created the docuseries "Restricted to Ship," gaining international attention. This inspired her to found "M. Leine Productions, LLC," a company dedicated to highlighting mariners' lives through cinematic storytelling.

Despite stepping back from sea duties, Chelsea remains actively engaged in maritime affairs through her role as the Women’s Caucus East Coast Liaison based out of Newark Hall. The Women's Caucus, a driving force for women's rights and professional development in maritime, supports networking and open discussions on pertinent women's issues in the industry.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, and now residing in New Jersey, Chelsea channels her entrepreneurial spirit into Tiny's Potions, a small organic syrup business she runs in her free time.

In her advocacy work, Chelsea focuses on improving conditions for mothers offshore. She advocates for essential accommodations such as safe and private spaces for pumping, access to satellite phones, assistance with shipping breast milk home, secure storage facilities for breast milk, and adequate leave policies with job security. Chelsea actively engages with large ships, advocating for these crucial changes and championing the rights of mothers working onboard.

Cassie discovered her passion for the maritime industry at a young age through a youth development program on a Tall ship. Despite being one of the few females in her maritime school class, she pursued her dreams and obtained a Diploma in nautical science with an OOW Unlimited certification.

Throughout her career, she faced challenges and barriers as a female in a male-dominated industry. From being the only woman in her deck and engine departments on multiple ships to navigating mental health boundaries, she persevered with resilience and determination.

She sailed as a mate for six years and recently made the decision to move shoreside. So far, she is happy she made the leap. She was able to become a Port Captain for AMHS back here in Ketchikan, where she is learning a lot in terms of the regulatory and business side of maritime.

She is 25% Alaska Native and a member of the Tongass Tribe. She was raised by strong and confident women, and throughout her experience in the maritime, she has met a lot of women who share those characteristics. Mark H. Buzby is a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and former Administrator of the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) from 2017 to 2021. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and had a 34-year Navy career, including various operational commands and leading the Naval Task Force during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As MARAD's Administrator, he advocated for waterborne transportation and the U.S. Merchant Marine's viability.

Starting in the gift shop department of Norwegian Cruise Lines, she fell in love with life at sea but yearned for a more hands-on role. Through networking and learning on the job, she became an unlicensed deckhand on adventure passenger vessels. 

Her passion for marine conservation led her to become a science communicator, creating videos showcasing offshore work. Now, she is joining the JOIDES Resolution Research Vessel as a Science Outreach Officer. 

She is also starting to explore the recruiting world, so she can play a more direct and pivotal role in getting as many passionate women out on the water as she can! Previously, Alice served on the NOAA Ship Rainier as a deck watch officer and hydrographic surveyor. During her time with NOAA Ship Rainier, she conducted ship seafloor mapping operations throughout southeast Alaska, Kodiak, and coral reef habitat surveys in the Mariana Islands archipelago. As an NOAA Corps officer, she wears many hats, including deck watch officer, ship navigator, hydrographer, diving officer, damage control officer, public affairs officer, and NOAA working SCUBA diver. Prior to joining the NOAA Corps, Lt. j.g. Beittel completed a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Management and a minor in Geographic Information Systems from the University of California, Davis.

Simon has been credited with the inclusion of stalking and dating violence in the definition of sexual harassment under Title IX, and her impact litigation ensured universities are responsible under Title IX for sexual violence at fraternity houses.  

 Simon represents scores of survivors on college campuses and in K-12. She effectively represents survivors in campus disciplinary proceedings, and in obtaining remedies and accommodations to ensure survivors can safely and fully access the benefits of their education. 

To hold schools accountable for failing to uphold survivor's rights, Simon represents survivors in Title IX litigation against Universities, and her efforts have launched multiple federal investigations into colleges and schools.

Widely regarded as a Gender Violence Policy Expert, Simon directed the United States Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus, advises gender-based violence legislative efforts in numerous states, and was appointed to the Sexual Misconduct Advisory Committee by the Colorado Department of Higher Education.

In addition to his role at Boston IVF, he is also a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School and Maine Medical Center, where he teaches the next generation of fertility experts and performs crucial research that focuses on the use of prediction models to improve medical decision-making in IVF.

His clinical interests include LGBTQ family building, women who have experienced a miscarriage, endocrine disorders affecting reproduction, and surgical treatment to optimize fertility. He has presented and published his research nationally.

He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School - and his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and Boston IVF.

The Center for Ocean Policy and Economics – COPE. COPE° is a facilitator for cogent maritime and ocean policy and economic development project initiatives linking academic, corporate, non-governmental, and governmental partners to create impactful solutions. The working group on psychological safety, bullying, and SASH is the first project that we successfully worked on. 

The work that they are doing from Dominica Maritime Administration is going beyond just registering vessels. They are continuously improving maritime policy in general in a very efficient way. Dominica Maritime Administration is managed from Fairhaven in the USA by the same people who run Northeast Maritime Institute – College of Maritime Science. This private maritime school also developed NEMO and HALO and online learning, simulation, and examination tools.

Becky Newdick is a deck officer who sails as both Chief Mate and Captain on Wightlink vehicle ferries. She has been working at sea for 15 years and has sailed on a range of vessels, including general cargo ships, bulk carriers, dredgers, and passenger vessels.
