Walking out of one room to get something and when you get to the next room where the thing is supposed to be, you can’t remember what it was you came into that room for.

Just me? No probably not.

Well, today’s conversation is with Allison Liu, a brain health coach and expert in helping women reclaim their mental sharpness and improve their energy and mood. Allison herself struggled with brain fog and panic attacks in her early 50s. Forgetting what she was saying in the middle of saying it, finding it hard to express herself and feeling increasingly irritable, she felt she was losing her sense of self. Adopting a science-based approach, which she uses with her clients today, she increased her own ‘brain reserve’, improving her memory, mood and relationships. She now coaches women in their 40s and beyond to achieve the same so that they can handle life’s challenges with ease, face the future with confidence, and fully engage in life at work and at home.

Her mission: Staying sharp for life.

Allison goes over the 11 risk factors for keeping our brains healthy and she gives us the top 3 pillars to focus on for cultivating healthy brain function.

And one of the most surprising we discussed — cognitive decline begins WAY earlier than any of us imagined. Decades before it will start showing symptoms.

So even though we can’t see the physical manifestations of our brain health like we can see our muscles when we work them out, this is one of the most important areas to focus on in our aging process. Because it has an impact on EVERY system in the body.

And stay tuned because Allison gives us a generous offer at the end – don ‘t miss it!

Please enjoy this conversation with me and Allison Liu.

ALLISON’S OFFER:

3 Free brain health coaching sessions to the first 3 women to claim them!

Go to www.allisonliucoaching.com/call

Enter code: MMM23 at checkout to claim your FREE call!

REFERENCE LINKS:

Free cognitive testing: www.cognifit.com

Connect with Allison:

Website| www.allisonliucoaching.com

Connect with Angie:

Website|www.angiebyrd.com

Instagram| https://instagram.com/angie.byrd

YouTube| https://youtube.com/@angiebyrd

Subscribe to Angie’s Newsletter: www.angiebyrd.com/subscribe

Did you know that in the 1700s some people believed that menopause caused women to be vulnerable to spontaneous combustion? Yes, that a woman in menopause could just drop into a pile of ash.

I mean, seriously.

This story among many other fascinating topics are in the wonderful book Sidelined: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health. And this conversation is with the researcher and author of that book, Susan Salenger. Sidelined examines the many ways in which some women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare.

Women are notoriously putting everything and everyone else’s needs in front of their own. In the book, she references a study which ranks where women put themselves in order of priority when it comes to health care: 1. Children (of course) 2. Pets 3. Elderly parents 4. Partner/Spouse 5. Ourselves.

How in the world do we expect to take care of all those other humans and non-humans if we aren’t taking proper care of ourselves? And is it any wonder we feel this way after knowing the history of how women’s bodies and health have been perceived for the past few thousand years? The final chapter of Sidelined gives a really interesting overview of how women's bodies and health have been perceived through time. It made me laugh out loud and honestly seethe with anger.

Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time inadvertently undermine their own care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don’t feel well and worry that their doctor visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don’t always comply with the doctor’s instructions. Salenger’s research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make.

This was an absolutely delightful conversation with a very inspiring woman.

Susan is not only an author, she’s also a powerlifter at 80-years-old, and is taking Latin dance lessons. She is my kind of lady.

Connect with Susan:

WEBSITE AND SOCIAL HANDLES:

https://www.susansalenger.com/

https://www.tiktok.com/@grandma.gains

https://www.instagram.com/susansalenger/

https://www.facebook.com/suesalenger/

https://twitter.com/susansalenger

https://www.linkedin.com/in/susan-salenger-a4a02716/

@shewritesdotcom (IG)

@shewritespress (FB)

Connect with Angie:

Website|www.angiebyrd.com

Instagram| https://instagram.com/angie.byrd

YouTube| https://youtube.com/@angiebyrd

Subscribe to Angie’s Newsletter: www.angiebyrd.com/subscribe

Oh boy are you in for a treat. This episode with Alli Kirk is about making aging a process of evolution, not of deterioration.

Alli is a personal growth specialist, Reiki Master and Teacher and gifted energy worker. I have worked many times with Alli over the past several years and she is the real thing. I consider her part of my Magic Tribe.

Alli came to the world of Spirituality, Energy, and Reiki in 2012, through a daily meditation practice that totally transformed her life. Her personal growth journey was sudden, spontaneous, and quite unexpected. As she rounded the corner to 40, the life she created for myself all of a sudden felt constricting, suffocating, and soul-sucking. She awakened to realize that the life she was living (a 20-year marriage, 2 beautiful children, and a successful business) wasn’t one of her own choosing, but one that was subtly thrust upon her by the rigid expectations of her conservative Christian upbringing. It was a life created, not to make HER happy, but to provide her family with the life THEY thought she should have. Her daily meditation and Reiki practice became powerful tools that assist her in creating the life she lives now: a life built upon unconditional self-love, radical self-acceptance, and the awareness of her Divinity, even in her humanness. Both practices continue to steer the course of her personal evolution every day.

By curating what she learned about directing psycho-spirituality towards self-actualization and personal empowerment, she is passionate about helping others build a plan for personal growth that resonates with them, so they can feel inspired and empowered to create their own deeply fulfilling lives.

We talk about emotions – where they come from, where they are stored and how to clear them.

Her practices that moved her with Wellness through menopause and beyond. How thoughts create our reality. The Triple Goddess (maiden, mother, crone) and how she shows up in our lives. We talk about yin/yang : feminine and masculine energies and how they play through every human.

And a BRILLIANT 2-step process for handling upsets, stress and clearing emotions that you will NOT want to miss. I will be using this myself for sure.

And finally, what magic means to her and how she creates it in her life.

Related links:

Fantastic Fungi (the film is also available on Netflix)

HeartMath Institute

Double-slit experiment - quantum theory

Connect with Allison Kirk:

Website| www.thebodytemple.us

Instagram| http://www.instagram.com/thetemplepriestess

Connect with Angie:

Website|www.angiebyrd.com

Instagram| https://instagram.com/angie.byrd

YouTube| https://youtube.com/@angiebyrd

Subscribe to Angie’s Newsletter: www.angiebyrd.com/subscribe

Hello friend. Thank you for being here!

Welcome to the Midlife Magic + Mayhem podcast! A show for women (mainly) in their 40s and 50s who are sitting with the questions…Is this it? Who am I? Where have I been? What do I want? Where did the magic go? What now?

I'm Angie Byrd and each week we will walk together down the path of what it means to be a modern woman in midlife. The show will go many places and hopefully some edges around health, wellness, sex, relationships, career, neuroscience, the nervous system, eroticism, pleasure, power, sisterhood, life transitions, pivots and many alternative therapies. There’s no place we won’t go.

This is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile now, and after coaching women for over a decade, becoming an empty nester, moving across the country, deep reflection and reaching the ever-moving line of midlife myself, the voice of, “Do It Now,” was loud and clear.

And I don’t think I’m the only one.

Women in midlife are hungry, curious and craving places where our wisdom and wildness are not only accepted, but celebrated. The intention with the show is to understand the major transitions that come with this stage of life from different angles and learn from each other how to step into our true Wellness as wise women.

Stepping away from, knowing we can come back to, the status quo and the conventional “7 Steps to –” information currently available, and play outside all the boxes we have been programmed to stay in.

My sweet spot is being a curator and a student, walking with women who are also curious and inspired by uncommon conversations. Entering questions from a place of exploration and not needing an answer, but being with the juiciness of the journey.

What I know about you is this: no matter what you have going on in your life, how chaotic, wonderful, heartbreaking, busy, quiet, fulfilling or flat it may seem, who you really are is infinitely well and powerful. We all are. I've seen it. Felt it. Heard it.

In these uncommon conversations, we'll explore together how we can take our gifts and change not only our own lives, but the world.

Because it starts with us. Now. This...is our time.

Thank you so much for listening!

Connect with Angie:

Website|www.angiebyrd.com

Instagram| https://instagram.com/angie.byrd

YouTube| https://youtube.com/@angiebyrd

Subscribe to Angie’s Newsletter: www.angiebyrd.com/subscribe
