S1 Ep 18: Unfreezing Trauma - Mary Held

In this episode, you will meet Mary Held from Lansing Michigan. Mary is a retired school teacher who had a life changing experience through therapy. I fully enjoyed this conversation and you will too!

For 11 years, Mary suffered from debilitating seizures that left her spending most of her time at home. She was unable to find the cause, despite consulting with physicians, neurologists, and psychiatrists. Finally, a friend recommended Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. She found an EMDR therapist and started work. Through EMDR she discovered that her seizures were caused by PTSD. Four months later, she was almost totally free from seizures and living a life she describes as “full of joy.”

Mary wrote about each session and what happened to her between sessions. Her journal, supplemented by her therapist’s comments on each session, became a book, “Unfreezing Trauma: My Personal Journal of EMDR Recovery.” Now Mary is dedicated to talking about her story, the book, and EMDR in general. Her goal is to make sure everyone who suffers from PTSD knows about EMDR.

Meet Kristina Lucia. In this episode, we learn about multi-talented New Yorker Kristina who is an artist, a creator and an author. In my conversation with her, I learned of her ambitious project to complete a 15-part children's book series starred by eponymous Bella Lucia. This is a lovely conversation where Kristina shares her writing process, her inspiration and her incredible focus. She is a budding podcaster who teems with energy.

Kristina Lucia is an artist, creator, and author who ignites the imaginations of children and their parents through her limited edition animals and touching storybooks. Her humble beginnings in a small farm town (there was only one traffic light!) sparked her creativity at a young age and her adopted home of New York City keeps her inspired daily. Curiously Curated Creations of Kristina Lucia features a magical array of warm, cuddly and comforting creatures along with storybooks that help parents and kids improve their communication and deepen their relationships.

Whether she is strutting down Fifth Avenue in Manolos or curled up on her sofa in slipper socks, Kristina is ready to create a masterpiece. If you are interested in writing Dystopian fiction this is your episode. Meet William R. Douglas, from McHenry, Illinois. In this episode, William shares the motivation for his book, his team of critical friends and how he maintained focus. His book, a futuristic glance at the world in Post Second Civil War USA, where the sport of baseball is no longer part of the national memory bank. Imagine an America where no remembers baseball! This is a fictional tale but as the main character pieces together artefacts to reconstruct baseball, you can't help but wonder about a world so reliant on clouds to store data and the risks associated. William's book may be fictional but the underlying themes are current.

Years ago, I saw an article that talked about games that kids used to play back in the 1850's and earlier that are now extinct. No kids play these games anymore, or even has any knowledge of them. Back in the 1990s, I read David Aickman's novel: When the Almond Tree Blossoms. This is a fiction book about a Second American Civil War that is fought along idealogical lines of Liberal vs Conservative. 10 years ago I read William Forstchen's novel: One Second After. This story is about en EMP attack against the United States that puts the country back into "horse and buggy mode". I have been a baseball fan all my life. Before I started writing the novel, I began to see early warning signs regarding the overall popularity of baseball, especially among youth, beginning a decline. So, taking all the above inputs, a 'what-if' scenario started kicking around in my mind. What if baseball died as a sport? How could it die? What external event could hasten it's demise? The end product is my speculative fiction novel: The Death and Resurrection of Baseball: Echoes from a Distant Past.

Meet Fabian Thomas!

Fabian was trained at the University of the West Indies and at Fordham University in the USA. He made his mark across the arts as a writer, especially in the fields of poetry and theatre. Painting with words, he gently draws his audience into worlds they have not experienced before. Powerful and lyrical, his works have garnered awards both for his published literary pieces as well as staged productions.

Fabian is the founder and Artistic Director of the performing arts group Tribe Sankofa, and sole trader of his umbrella company Sankofa Arts & Facilitation.

In 2018, fabian launched his first self-published book entitled New Thought, New Words, a collection of gratitude verses, affirmations and spoken word. His first children’s book Djembe was published in February 2022 and Tribal Elements (A Tribe Ting, Volume 1), a chapbook of original writings by members of Tribe Sankofa was launched on April 23 as part of the collective’s 10th Anniversary celebrations. He hosts a YouTube show called Fabian Seh!.

She is an American born in the state of Indiana, who grew up mostly in North Carolina, moved to California for college, and raised her family in Oregon. She has worked as an elementary teacher, middle school art teacher, high school drama teacher, principal, or school director in Oregon, Zambia, Hungary, Morocco, Turkey, Kosovo, and The Netherlands. Her first book is titled, “Breaking Free in Zambia—Tales of a Western Woman” is self-published on kindle with Amazon.com. After 30 years in education, she has taken her first sabbatical and is living and writing from the Azores, Portugal. In the last year she has published two professional writings for educational leadership and two opinion articles for the local newspaper in Angra do Heroismo. She is working on her first professional book titled: “ Opening Doors to Professional Collaboration” and is looking for an interested publisher. Taneisha is a Jamaican-born thought leader in the field of SEND education. She is a mother of two children diagnosed with autism, and a school leader still pursuing further education, yet for her there is more to do. During the pandemic, she made the decision to venture into the world of writing and successfully published her first book. This book tells the story of her son Jadon who was non-verbal up to age 8. The Big Surprise is a feel good story about how one day her son spoke while playing with his trains.

Despite not being an accomplished writer or illustrator, Taneisha harnessed the power of the internet and her friends' editing prowess to produce her book. Through her success, we learn that a vision is the only thing needed in order to make your book a reality.
