Does what you watch inspire you to greatness, or only make you anxious about the world? There's a difference between podcasts that inform us when making decisions, and people who merely complain for profit. It's not that nothing ever happens, but that that we, ourselves are passively watching the world go by. 

The media we consume may not define us, but it does shape the way we think. When all we listen to is the complaining of talking heads on the internet, we are left with a sense of anxiety that gets worse the longer we go without acting. It's a vicious cycle.

We can become lost in tribal arguments or we can look at the Minnesota ICE shooting to better understand asymmetrical warfare. In this episode we introduce a thought experiment where the line between combatant and non-combatant gets blurred. 

A common tactic of asymmetrical warfare is to leverage public opinion through potentially deceptive media to garner animosity against the opposing force. Through this tactic, a militarily inferior force may cripple a superior army by inspiring domestic opposition to military action, turning the local or resident populace against the actions of the dominant force. The objective of asymmetrical warfare isn't to win a decisive victory on the battlefield, but through inspiring revolutionary action in the resident populace, legitimate or otherwise.

At its core, Ghost Recon Wildlands is a game about Insurgency. You, the player, engage in various forms of Unconventional Warfare, on a mission to take down a Drug Cartel set in a Fictional Bolivia. The Success of Wildlands rushed a sequel: Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Despite being set up for success, Breakpoint bombed, leaving the players that loved Wildlands disappointed and distrusting of the developers. 

This Ghost Recon Wildlands review covers 5 points of comparison between it and its sequel: Narrative, Interactions, Allies, Enemies, and Gameplay. Critics of Breakpoint often focus on predatory microtransactions which do come play. However, the failure of Breakpoint runs deeper. Not only does the mechanism of the game struggle to keep the player engaged, the content departs from the subtle hat tip of Wildlands, replacing the player with a hammer-looking-for-nails pawn of generically forgettable non-playable characters.

On August 27th, 2025, a school shooting took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The transgender shooter identified by authorities followed a pattern of recent mass shootings, paying homage to earlier murderers. 

Churches, facing violence against their congregations by ideologies supported by some state governments, are pressed with a moral question of what to do. Christians are in an asymmetrical conflict. On moral grounds. On Political grounds. And violence. We are held to a higher standard, not by dishonest men, but by God. And worse, our enemy knows about it and intentionally uses it to their advantage. As as result we must be shrewd as serpents, and innocent as doves. 

Church security is nothing new. And despite political backlash by dishonest actors, such men have a grave task ahead of them. One that requires discernment.

While the Antihero Podcast has gone through great journalistic lengths to investigate the claims made by Tim Kennedy in his book, this episode is to probe the question of how someone could have gotten so far without someone noticing. The first six months of 2025 have displayed a roller coaster of events, many of which presented as catastrophes, or great victories depending on political affiliation. This weekend, a so-called Peacekeeper opened fire, shooting and killing a bystander at a No Kings protest this weekend. The presence of these armed individuals at left-wing protests has increased since the summer of love in 2020. The media will tell you that Soldiers are trained to dehumanize their enemy in order to become more efficient fighters. The propaganda sacrifices our own soldiers on the alter of efficiency, leaving them later to pay the price in the form of PTSD and trauma. And while we can be critical of the military, and of media, and of our politicians, none of this really matters if we don't take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions. Turns out, Dehumanization makes you Weak. 

Or at least that's my thoughts on the matter. John Soden, a former Ranger, instructor for Method Endeavors, and student of Psychology joins the show to talk about the aftereffects of dehumanization. The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis presents the interaction between demons and humans from the point of view of a senior devil in Hell's administration. The novel consists of a series of letters from one Screwtape to Wormwood, who has been assigned to an unnamed human for the purpose of winning the poor man over to the clutches of the wicked. In the 17th Chapter, our senior devil speaks on the subject of Gluttony, pointing out that he should focus not on excess, but on refinement or Delicacy.

I find it unabashedly funny when people argue passionately over what they should or shouldn't train, especially when we all know neither party is practicing what they preach. Too often, public conversations about EDC resort to shaming in order to produce a reaction. Instead, we are going to look at scaleability as a continuum that we can control. When it comes to every day carry, we think about self defense, first aid, and disaster response. These are the backbone of the subject, but not alone the answer.

The phrase "I got mine" manifests in various ways. It might be a team leader who quits at building his team after he's attained some achievement or completed some deployment. It might be a man abdicating from his community. It might be a concerned citizen who's only care extends to the end of his driveway while he complains about how the community is going to hell.

It might be a law abiding citizen who is satisfied with challenging tyranny only when it's convenient.

"I got mine" is the attitude of the corrupt military officer, who cares more about his career than his charge. "I got mine" is the attitude of the man who sees danger on the horizon and discards morality in order to so-called survive. It's the excuse of the moral degenerate, it's the logic of the looter who lack the courage to say what he really is.

War never changes, yet war fighting never remains the same. The tactics and strategies of the last war have been analyzed in pursuit of countermeasures. Instead, we are approaching the forever war with the individual as the target.

Like the word "tactical," these two words often get used without understanding what they mean. The Insurgent and the Sniper represent two very different roles in a 21st century war. Where the sniper focuses on one target at a time, the insurgent sets his sights on a whole population. Bother are after a strategic goal, but they differ in what or who they use as weapons.

All that we know is that we can't keep going on like this. What we don't know is when to make a change, or how.

In his work the Secular Age, Charles Taylor talks about the cross pressures of the era. James K. A. Smith distills this large and technical book into a short, relevant page turner titled "The Secular Age." While the term secular has meant different things at different times, or in different contexts, we live in one where secularism has to do with the mechanism of belief. Authenticity has become the dominant factor in the legitimacy of a belief. With a sense of freedom, it brings a different problem: suicide, individual and cultural.

And that problem is reflected in the malaise of urgency that weighs on the shoulders of so many: we believe there is something that we ought do, but that is also the one thing we cannot do.

And so we find ourselves between the boundaries of fools and cowards.

What do we have here. Two American-made, gas-piston driven firearms, each with a different take. The Brownells BRN-180 may not come in a complete package, but it does offer a light weight option when it comes to piston carbines. Should Women serve in combat roles in the military? The recent attempt on President Trump's life brings up the old debate about women in the military and women in combat roles. Framing tends to drive this conversation, and we continually get bogged down in redundant questions. Can women do the job? Are women capable of the achieving the standards? What about the non-physical elements of a protective detail?

Do we define the whole by only the deviations from the norm?

Or, is this whole debate beginning from the wrong foundation?

When quotas are required, the more arbitrary to the success of the mission, the more harm they do to the whole as well as to the individuals. Imagine standing on the parade field of achievement, unsure of whether you crossed the finish line, or if the standards were lowered just so you could be someone else's show pony.

The recent debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden covered a series of topics both relevant and otherwise to the American People. Among them included abortion, the economy, and illegal migration. What didn't come up, was Gun Control. And the silence spoke volumes as this divisive topic wouldn't have helped either candidate appear reasonable or knowledgeable on the subject.

The Secular Age can be marked as one where mechanism of belief commonly assumed considers religion one option amongst many. We may find a sense of freedom in not being bound politically or nationally to a Religion, but the cost reduces the legitimacy of a belief to authenticity and thus, merely a fashion statement. What you believe about right and wrong is simply a matter of taste.

But we may be observing the end of the secular age, where this form of secularism along with its liberty and meaning-leeching properties, gets replaced by State-mandated 'faith,' or merely worship of the State itself.

One sign of this cultural shift can be observed in how celebrity opinions about political topics trends to less results. We're simply not as interested in what so called famous people virtue signal about.

In violence, as in war, two concept stand in tension with one another: proportionality and utility. McMahan identifies one understanding of proportionality as "a constraint on action that causes harm." (Killing in War Pg 19). Utility, on the other hand, often functions as the context for informing one part of strategy, tactics, and techniques. We prioritize actions of these sorts that produce the desired outcome.

As such, the tension that exists between them is that they both must be accomplished or accommodated for the action to be considered moral, and further, both can be corrupted. Just as utility can lead to a might-makes-right worldview, and easily justify the absolute eradication of a warring people group, so the idea of proportionality is corrupted if we cease to believe some of those in conflict are less than human.

One part of the solution, or the developed skill of managing this tension comes from training. As we have seen in Gun Culture, those who train are rarely, if ever, the ones who participate in senseless violence. It is the untrained, who are both quick to call for the death of their accused oppressors, and it is the untrained who respond to a smaller conflict with overwhelming force.

When the term LARP (Live Action Role Playing) is used as an epitaph, it accuses the target of living in a fantasy. With analysis, we look at what it is that is considered dishonorable about so-called LARP-ing.

One of the most uncomfortable scenes in A24's Civil War is the firefight between men in Hawaiian shirts and uniformed soldiers. Although not a hard and fast rule, a heuristic can be applied to both stolen valor claims, and individual violence. Stolen Valor, when a person claims to have held a position in the military that they never achieved, comes in a few different forms. However, in Gun Culture large cases often explode into a witch hunt for similar offenders. The amount of self-aggrandizement is inversely proportional to the likelihood of the story.
Similarly, the more skilled a person is at the use of force, the less likely they are to use it, especially in rampages like school shootings.

The heuristic of an inverse proportionality can be applied to both, and more importantly uncovers the danger of perceiving one's self as weak as if it were an equivalent to being good.

Two events in recent history share a common thread. The White House loudly declares the 31st of March to be the Transgender Day of Visibility, and on Easter nonetheless. Not long before, an Obama appointed Judge adheres to the Second Amendment, but for a man who entered the United States Illegally. What do these two events have in common? Strategy.

The news that a Judge appeared to side with the Second Amendment when it came to a man who entered the United States illegally divided Gun Culture. However, this is unlikely a simple divide and conquer strategy.

Not long after, the attempt to promote a queer holiday, not directly in place of a Christian holiday, either opted to replace it, or something more nefarious. It illustrates a worldview that treats either Christianity or Queer as a religion, relegating the other to a mere fashion statement. Not to be mistaken as a mere misuse of terms, this episode delves into both events, and illustrates the possible strategy of both, inspired by a theology of self worship.

Calling it a review wouldn't be sufficient, and besides, there's plenty of places to go for that, some of which I may have even had a hand in. The SABRE-10 by Palmetto State Armory deserves recognition for presenting itself as two very different concepts, pulling each of with relative success.

The first for a Sub-$2000 rifle, you get quite a bit. From Mags and a bag, to a rifle that holds a reasonable zero for what you're getting it's a good launching point for a .308 caliber rifle. Is it perfectly clone correct? No. but it hits the highlights. It is ready to go out of the box? Again no, but after a little breaking in and a few swapped parts, it goes a long way, if you catch the precision rifle pun.

Decentralization will have its consequences, and to centralized authority, it will look like collapse. This comes with a warning. A suicide deemed martyrdom on one side of the globalized country may radicalize the actions of another, who takes it out on innocent children. This is the underground precursor to holy war, only one half of the equation doesn't necessarily believe they are religious to begin with. 

The death of Nex Benedict, named Dagny by her parents, could have been the catalyst as described above, only once the details came out, they told a very different story. 

Instead of a Martyr, Dagny may have been the bully, or at least likely had the attitude of one, using their claimed gender identity as justification and power in the matter. Tragically, she took her own life. 

Never let a good tragedy go to waste? We typically approach this phrase with the assertion that a person's interest in a particular tragedy is only opportunistic. 

However, the weaponization of tragedy is much darker, and more dangerous. The seeds of a holy war of unholy proportions.

Which Way Western Man? In a recent action, Texas has signed into law the requirement for adult content websites to implement age verification. In response, figures such as David Hogg commented the following on X "It’s crazy Texas sees porn as a greater threat to public health than the AR-15 used in Uvalde." either inadvertently identifying pornography as a potential risk to public health by comparing it to guns, or directly portraying them as an either-or, both are inspected in moral and cultural terms. 

Social Media already prefers soft core pornographic material to firearms related content. 

Government regulation brings up another question. Is porn a free speech issues?

Morality and Consequences: 
Fathers teach their sons to shoot a firearm, and safely. At the same time it is the father's responsibility to warn and protect their children from pornography. The breakdown and persecution of the nuclear family puts both of these duties in jeopardy.

Some arguments are like communism: you cannot completely stamp them out, and every once in a while and old dispute must rise to the surface only for us all to realize that it's something stupid we are debating.

The comparison of competition shooting to tactical shooting is one of those subjects, full of passionate attempts at equivocating the two things and then claiming one to be the superior form of training. but this leads to a deeper, more impactful topic regarding Gun Culture. Perhaps we're not so demoralized because we're materialistic, but that we've been reduced to buying pouches as the only form of progress.

What does Gun Control and Christian Nationalism have in common? Particularly, the rhetoric against them. While bad arguments of a similar fashion do not make a justification for either, they do help illustrate the way rhetoric functions. 

If not already, Christians should be prepared to face the horns of this dilemma: either chose to be condemned as a Christian Nationalist, or be gouged on the horn of an inevitably failed proposal, and be labeled as a hypocrite. 

We are called to be in the world, but not of it. 

In the same way, the right to self defense is not dependent on choosing the lesser of two evils.

There is a strain that runs through current political ideology that divides mankind into two parts. Some call them oppressors and oppressed, others see it as fascists and anti-fascists, but at the core it is the dividing of the population into two different categories: those who will inevitably do evil by their nature, and those who are justified in using violence so long as it is used to prevent the other from doing evil. 

Technique, Skill, Tactic, Strategy, followed by Theology or Philosophy serves as a model for a progressive of abstraction from the individual to the objective when it comes to layers of choice.

In a recent clip, a speaker on MSNBC described Christian Nationalism as believing that Rights exclusively come from God, or at least, they are not granted by the State. Historically, the prevalence of this belief led to the persecution and even killing of Christians. 

When a State sees itself as the granter or generator of Rights, it cannot abide by citizens appealing to a higher power.

If we are going to talk about ideological and information warfare, we would be foolish to ignore the intellectual or ideological injuries that a person may receive. On this this show we have talked about moral injuries where a person experiences a situation where they take part in, or are unable to stop an event which directly contradicts their moral system or values. 

In a similar fashion someone becomes an intellectual casualty when their ability to evaluate information has been additionally damaged beyond what they would otherwise be capable. More specifically, when it is that one is deceived by false information, but that their ability to evaluate information and make judgements accordingly is directly injured. 

These take multiple forms, often in the form of slurs and gaslighting, but in this case, if we are going to take it seriously that we are engaging in a conflict that spans from the spiritual, to the ideological, and intellectual, through propaganda, and manipulation, we would want to see the people who are injured, in this sense, healed.

In short, if we are going to use words with meaning, we better mean what we say.

Two recent events (depending on how you interpret the news cycle) help point out the relevance of Culture as a potential attack vector. In the interview by Tucker Carlson, Putin accused Ukraine of breaching the separation of church and state by banning the practice of orthodox Christianity. To us in the west, the nuance of this decision can easily be lost, considering that we are close to what we call Protestantism and Catholicism, by proximity, but not Orthodoxy. At the same time there is a group who claim to be the Church of Satan in America. 

If we condemn the acceptance of the Church of Satan, then may we also accept the Ukrainian Government's condemnation of Russian Orthodoxy? 
If we accept that people have a Right to practice religion including the so called Church of Satan, are we required, then to condemn the Ukrainian Government?

This is how we start to understand Culture as an Attack Vector for war making between governments.

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they responded to the mere existence of Tucker Carlson's interview of Vladimir Putin. Cries of outrage, traitor, and denouncements, as loud as they were, quickly faded, and so should our intellectual respect for the minds attached to the mouths and keyboards making such claims. But all is not so simple, nor so clear, in the international world of intrigue.

While medication has focused on treating the physical injuries that can contribute to PTSD, it remains ill equipped to address moral injuries one may encounter in war. Beyond the stigma placed on military veterans, and a cruel incentive program directed at their mental health, the idea of PTSD, when reduced to merely physiological responses to trauma, only looks at half the problem.

A moral injury is defined as "When one feels they have violated their conscience or moral compass when they take part in or fail to prevent an act that disobeys their own moral values or personal principles," by the DAV (Disabled American Vets) or as "When someone does something that goes against their beliefs this is often referred to as an act of commission and when they fail to do something in line with their beliefs that is often referred to as an act of omission. Individuals may also experience betrayal from leadership, others in positions of power or peers that can result in adverse outcomes (2). Moral injury is the distressing psychological, behavioral, social, and sometimes spiritual aftermath of exposure to such events (3). A moral injury can occur in response to acting or witnessing behaviors that go against an individual's values and moral beliefs." according to Sonya Norman and Shinra Maguen for the VA. 

The effects of moral injuries can be mitigated by individuals with a strong understanding of their moral foundation, and a dedication to it that surpasses their circumstances.

It is possible to look at a situation that takes place within our culture, acknowledge that happened was wrong, even to offer aid, without trying to turn it into a movement. In an time where a public display of implied suffering can be a financially lucrative grift, we are all in danger of become jaded and cold hearted towards our own people. 

One form of entryism uses the (often legitimate) suffering and grievances of people in order to integrate a set of rules that ultimately overturn or undo a binding community. The French Revolution might have started with a legitimate grievance, but ended in Napoleon who immediately followed the Reign of Terror.

A side note, for those who read these: SHOTSHOW has a strange effect on the industry, where for those who attend, it seems quite easy to get in, and for those who do not, it appears exclusive, and sometimes with dramatic consequences. If it comes across as elitist and exclusionary, please forgive me. For many, SHOTSHOW is the one time a year where all our industry friends come together at one place, and we often get to reconnect with people we haven't seen for years, all in the neon light of that exhausting city.

This year had marked differences than years past, all on the level of the culture. If it feels like all is quiet on the industry side, the culture bustles with fear and loathing and anticipation for what comes next. And it often does that every year until something does happen and we call it a pandemic. 

The motto for 2024 should be: Here I am, send Me.

2023 was a painful year, and the sentiment is that it's only beginning. 

The question remains, what is the IT that is only beginning? What is the cause or explanation of the upheaval? Books have been written on the subject, and they pile up on bookshelves and in influencer's reading lists, but do they end up helping or perpetuating the problem.

In this episode, I put forward the theory that we are experiencing the end of an age, the Secular Age as Charles Taylor puts it. In order to explain what that means we go into three different definitions for the word "secular" and what their end might mean.

The landscape of discussion on masculinity hosts many tribes. Some demand specialization, others, annihilation. All of which appear unhappy about the state of masculinity in the West.

Questions about masculinity are ultimately inquiries about not only his identity, but about society, government, and how we should live. Kenneth W. Royce, Author of over 15 books, provides the Modules for Manhood, three books that cover a great breadth of topics, giving the reader an introduction into the many things he believes a man should be good at, or in pursuit of.

Topics include Money, Power, Liberty, Guns, Family, Food, Farming, Training, Religion, Relationships, Work, Character, and more.

The Ends Justify The Means
You have to break a few eggs to make an Omelette

And similar phrases are not only used to moraly justify atrocities, but are wielded rhetorically as a call to action instead of a moral argument. 

Whether a case of desperation, or of utilitarian ends, we take a look a this form of moral argumentation and see if it holds water. 

Three layers challenge the legitimacy of such sayings: 
1. The Argument is Incomplete. 
2. I struggles under any moral scrutiny
3. It only serves the short term.

The subject of Civil War is once again in the mainstream, this time brought forward by a trailer by the very namesake. Dark Humor gets many of us through our tough times, but if this means anything, it's that we're not there yet. 

As a result, we are once again engaging with Just War Theory, having to do with some problems that the classic model struggles with, particularly when it comes to dealing with the morality of killing in War. 

A time for honest intellectual engagement, we'll be sure to make some time for the levity soon to follow. 

But along the way, we deal with an important lesson when it comes to what makes the greatest of contemporary warfighters so dangerous, how we can harness it, and what warnings it comes with: sanction.

By my estimation, since the Second World War, the West has taken for granted why men will voluntarily go off to war. It generally minimizes it into some semblance of the male fantasy or selfish ambition or patriotism. However, how we, ourselves make these decisions, or think about Just War Theory as individuals, has consequences for our lives that go well beyond internet clout. As it appears war is creeping into the lives of the individual, we must consider why it is we, ourselves, would consider going to war or engaging in violence at all.

The book mentioned early in this episode is "Killing in War" by Jeff McMahan.

If entrance into the military counts as initiation into Gun Culture (it doesn't, but work with me here), then I have spent 15 years in various parts of this community. What are the lessons to be learned from it? First, we all enter naive, whether into a job or a discipline or a skill tree. As we learn where we need to correct our way of thinking, we are faced with options for growth, or resentment. 

Second, group constitution takes second place to group attitude when it comes to success. Think of it like skills being the foundation, but not the cause for a good community. 

Finally, whether shooting competition, training tactically, or looking into new gear, we build this community that you're likely a part of, by spending time with one another. 

Let's do more of that.

Cody, the man behind Bargain Bin Tactician, tells his story of entering into Gun Culture, searching for community after moving, and how he has approached gear from the outside looking in.

The curse and cure of gun culture is how much it is centered around items. In a sense, what we spend our money on is the best reflection of what we consider valuable, even if what we say and what we buy doesn't match up. Bargain Bin Tactician has brought a level of media professionalism to his production without limiting his learning curve to dictate equipment first, uber alles.

If war is simply conflict between Governments or states, and the use of armies targets the politcal, which economic warfare attacks a people's market or access to resources, what would it look like for a hostile country to use culture as an attack vector in a warlike fashion? Define it too broadly and innocent people will suffer as they get swept up alongside insurgents, producing a breeding ground for more conflict. Define it too narrowly, however, and insurgencies will be left to roam free under the guise of humanitarian aid or religious organizations. 

Much of American culture lives in contradiction. It wants it's government to stay out of their business, except when it comes to supporting it. It's okay with government meddling, so long as it's bothering someone else. And anarchy provides no alternative. 

In this episode we revisit Politics, Economics, and Culture as three different attack vectors between peoples, and take a look at pitfalls to avoid when scrying culture as a potential attack vector.

Putting community building into practice, Brent built a community through volunteering his time and experience to put on events for those who wanted to attend. Instead the basic Pistol and Rifle classes, they went well beyond including shooting from and around vehicles, to a version of a foreign weapons day. An antidote to the pessimism that hangs over Gun Culture, this conversation demonstrates that not only can we visualize what we want to see, but put it to action.

AS two veterans, we address differences and similarities between out similar timeframe in the military. From TBI, to leading a platoon versus teaching in the civilian world.
