The Jedi Ashtavakra Gita

The Ashtavakra Gita is an ancient Hindu text structured in the form of a dialogue between the sage Ashtavakra and his pupil Janaka – the king of Mithila, a region of North Eastern India. The dating of the text is near-impossible with a potential age range as wide as 700 to 2500 years from present.

In any case, it is packed full of wisdom and crying out for a revised ‘Jedi’ treatment. As is our way, where traditional translations might use names such as Brahman or Atman, or capital ‘S’ Self – we use ‘The Force’. Where reference is made to a sage or ‘wise person’, we use the name ‘Jedi’. This is not meant to cause offence in any way. The use of different names by different cultures when referencing ‘The Absolute ‘ can trick us into thinking that fundamentally different concepts are being discussed, when nothing could be further from the truth. The Absolute is The Absolute irrespective of what name you give it. Within the mythology of The Star Wars Universe ‘The Force’ is the ‘Absolute Ground of Being’ and those in closest communion with it are ‘Jedi’.

Meister Eckhart - from Whom The Force Hid Nothing

Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) was a German medieval mystic of the Dominican branch of Catholicism. His preaching was immensely popular in his own time and his writings form an important part of the foundation of western mysticism. Furthermore, his ideas and inspiration will assist those on their own Jedi Path.

Much of the script for this video is taken from the Foreward and Editor's Introduction to the wonderful book: Meister Eckhart, from Whom God Hid Nothing by David Steindl-Rast and David O'Neal. I recommend reading their book in full!

The Avadhuta Gita is a sacred text of Hindu philosophy. Of unknown provenance, it contains the teachings of a Jedi named Dattatreya. The book focuses on the nature of reality and the path to spiritual liberation. It encourages us to look beyond the physical world and recognize the underlying unity of all things in, and of The Force.

It stipulates that the ultimate truth is one divine conscious Force, manifesting as everything and everyone. This divine consciousness is eternal, unchanging, and beyond the limitations of the physical world.

What is The Force? If nothing else, The Force is a thought – it is an idea, a representation in our finite minds of the infinite, eternal and binding, the common thread that links all phenomena. Above us, beneath us, around us – but also in us and in everything that we typically understand as not-us.
This idea of a Divine Force wasn’t invented as a neat narrative device for a 1970s space opera. It is a universal and near-ubiquitous concept that has been experienced and studied throughout recorded history, and beyond.

The Tao Te Ching is an ancient Chinese text written sometime in the 4th Century BC (or possibly earlier) by a mysterious old man of legend, called Lao Tzu. Although it only contains some 5000 Chinese characters split into 81 short chapters, it has long been considered a treasure trove of practical wisdom.
In particular, it deals with how the wise conduct themselves in work, home life, leadership and conflict – life in all its facets. It has been translated and interpreted in thousands of different ways over the years, so why is this version needed?
The ‘Tao’ can be a difficult concept for the uninitiated to grasp. In appropriating the concept of ‘The Force’ from the mythology of the fictional Star Wars universe, and making it synonymous with the ‘Tao’, the text is immediately more accessible to many who might otherwise find it impenetrable.
Associating ‘The Force’ with the ‘Tao’ is not a new idea. Through the work of Joseph Campbell, George Lucas incorporated many ancient concepts into his creation of the Star Wars universe. For many, the similarities between ‘The Force’ and Lao Tzu’s ‘Tao’ are clear. The truth, explicitly stated in the first chapter of the work, is that both ‘The Force’ and the ‘Tao’ are just names for a real underlying truth we find hard to comprehend. This book attempts to illuminate that truth.
