Thoughts from the Driver’s Seat: The Drop-Off Nobody Talks About

In this episode, I was on my way to a six-mile run when I stopped at the store for water and saw something that instantly sparked a thought.

I noticed what looked like a child transfer between parents in a parking lot. I don’t know their situation, and I’m not trying to speak for them. But I do know the feeling that moment can carry.

Nobody wants to be in that position.

What stood out to me most is something I’ve noticed before: the parent dropping off often sits there a little longer before pulling away. I’ve been there. And when that moment happens, the feeling isn’t freedom.

It’s not, “Now I get to go do whatever I want.”

It’s, “What am I supposed to do now?”

People assume that when you’re alone and your child isn’t with you, it means you get a break. But the truth is, sometimes that time becomes the space where you’re forced to collect yourself, cope, and keep going until the next time you get to see them.

This one is short, raw, and a little circular. But honestly, that feeling is circular too.
