The Rich Man, Lazarus, and the Power of Hearing God's Word | Luke 16:19–31

In Jesus' parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, a wealthy man who feasted every day ends up in torment while a destitute beggar is carried by angels to Abraham's side. It's a dramatic reversal, and it all apparently hinges on hearing God's Word. Abraham's answer to the tormented Rich Man's request is simple: "Your brothers who are still alive have Moses and the prophets. They must hear them."

This sermon describes what it actually means to be a "hearer of the word" and why hearing without obeying is like swapping out the ingredients in a recipe and pretending you followed it.

Owning the Mystery | John 3:1-17 (Holy Trinity Sunday)

On Holy Trinity Sunday, it's tempting to spend the whole sermon trying to explain how God can be three-in-one. Instead, Pastor Karl takes us into Jesus' nighttime conversation with Nicodemus in John 3:1-17 to show that the Trinity is the name of the God who acted to save you. Pentecost Is Not About Vibes — It's About the Word of God | Acts 2

Most of American Christianity treats the Holy Spirit like He's in charge of vibes: get the right music, the right lighting, the right atmosphere, and maybe people will "feel the Spirit." But what if that's actually insulting to the Third Person of the Trinity? "You Also Will Bear Witness" — Why the Church Is Worth It | John 15:26–27

This sermon falls in the liturgical "in-between" after Christ's Ascension but before Pentecost, and it asks a question the first disciples must have been wrestling with: "How does the Church carry on without Jesus physically present?"

Ask, Tell, and Trust: How God Grows His Church Through Faithful People | Psalm 145:4

A Joy No One Can Take From You | John 16:16-22

In the book of Ezra, the older generation wept at the sight of the newly laid temple foundation because they remembered what they'd lost. Meanwhile, the younger generation shouted for joy because they had nothing to compare it to. Both groups had one thing in common: their joy was built on what they could see and measure. And joy like that is fragile.

In this sermon from the second week of a congregational building campaign, Pastor Karl Grant draws a line from that ancient scene to the very real anxieties we face today of stretched budgets, uncertain markets, and the weight of being asked to give sacrificially.

But Jesus makes a staggering promise in John 16: "No one will take your joy from you." This is a decree grounded in the fact that Jesus walked out of a borrowed tomb and will never die again.

The Mighty Power of the Good Shepherd | John 10:11–18

Every pastor, every teacher, every Director of Christian Education—they're all transitory. So what holds a congregation together when staff changes, ministries shift, and uncertainty creeps in? More Blessed Than Seeing: How the Risen Christ Reaches Us Today (John 20:19-31)

Thomas got to see and touch the risen Jesus. His response was the boldest confession of faith in the Gospels: "My Lord and my God." But then Jesus says something unexpected: those who believe without seeing are even more blessed. So how does that work? How do people who never walked into that upper room get the same thing Thomas got?

There are three answers, and none of them are vague or spiritual-feeling.

The breath Jesus breathed on His disciples is the same creative breath from Genesis and Ezekiel, still breathing forgiveness through the church's ministry of absolution.
The blood and water from Jesus' pierced side are the same blood and water given in communion and baptism.
The body and blood Thomas touched are the same body and blood placed in our hands every Sunday at the Lord's Table.

Jesus says it plainly: receiving Him by faith through these ordinary things is a greater blessing than seeing Him with your own eyes, because only the power of God can make that happen in you.

The Empty Tomb Is for Faithless Disciples Too | Mark 16:1-8 (Easter Sunday)

This Easter sermon digs into Mark 16:1-8 and the surprising emphasis Mark places on the body of Jesus. The empty tomb is historical proof that the payment for sin was accepted in full. And the angel's message wasn't reserved for the faithful. The "young man" specifically names Peter, the disciple who cursed and swore he didn't know Jesus just days earlier. The gospel, it turns out, is for everyone! And it's especially for those who feel least worthy of receiving it.

How the Suffering Servant Saves the World | Isaiah 53 — Good Friday Sermon

Throughout Lent, we've been asking the Suffering Servant of Isaiah why he suffers and what God's promised salvation actually costs. On Good Friday, we finally answer the question: how does this Servant accomplish the salvation of the world?

Isaiah 53 gives us three answers:

the Servant bears our sorrows without complaint,
He absorbs the full weight of God's righteous wrath against sin in his body,
and He pours out His very life as both high priest and sacrifice so that guilty sinners could be counted righteous.

This sermon walks through each of those three movements and doesn't shy away from the hard questions. If God is the one who helps the servant, why is God also the one who leads him into suffering? Is the Father being cruel? And what does it really mean that Jesus was "numbered with the transgressors"? The answers help us understand the cross as the only way a just God could justify the wicked while remaining just Himself.

On Good Friday, Christians stand in awe of what God accomplished when Jesus refused to defend Himself, absorbed every ounce of punishment we deserved, and laid down His life so that we would never have to face God's wrath.

Why Holy Communion Is the Center of Everything | 1 Corinthians 11 (Maundy Thursday)

When Moses ratified God's covenant with Israel, he threw sacrificial blood on the altar and on the people. In addition to being dramatic and messy, it meant something: these people now belonged to God.

On Maundy Thursday, we see that same pattern fulfilled in a far greater way: Jesus takes bread and wine and says, "This is my body. This is my blood of the New Covenant." What happens at the communion rail is the delivery of everything Christ died to give us.

This sermon from 1 Corinthians 11:23–32 makes the case that Holy Communion belongs at the center of the Church's life for three reasons:

it's where the New Covenant is personally handed to you,
it's the Church's most powerful proclamation of Christ's saving death,
and it's the means by which God lovingly examines and preserves his people.

Along the way, there's an honest testing of the most common objection to frequent communion ("it loses its specialness if you do it too often"). And we learn how the stern warnings in Paul's letter are themselves an act of divine love.

Why the Cross Is Glory, Not Defeat | John 12:20–43 (Palm Sunday)

When Greek visitors came looking for Jesus during Passover week, they expected to meet a celebrity miracle worker. Instead, Jesus told them his true glory was about to be revealed on a Roman cross. In this Palm Sunday sermon from John 12:20–43, we learn why Jesus called his crucifixion his "hour of glory" and what that means for anyone who claims to follow him.

The sermon points out three dimensions of the cross's glory:

it's the burial of a seed that produces an eternal harvest of salvation,
it's the courtroom verdict that silences Satan's accusations against the baptized,
and it's the force that draws every human being toward the Savior.

Along the way, we encounter a vivid picture of the devil as a prosecuting attorney who's been thrown out of the courtroom—still shouting, but no longer holding any legal claim over those who belong to Christ.

But the sermon doesn't end on a comfortable note. John tells us that many who witnessed Jesus' glory firsthand refused to confess him publicly because they were afraid of the personal cost. The challenge for us is honest and direct: are there places in your life where you're hiding your confession of Christ because the approval of other people feels safer than the approval of God?

Redeemed Without Money: What God's Salvation Actually Looks Like | Isaiah 52:1–12

If you were sold into slavery for nothing (no price tag, no value assigned) how exactly would you buy your way back out?

In Isaiah 52, Isaiah paints three vivid pictures:

captives redeemed at absolutely no cost to themselves,
a messenger whose announcement of peace turns ruined-city watchmen into a choir,
and a God who rolls up his sleeves in plain sight of every nation on earth.

The result is an victory procession with God himself as both the vanguard and the rear guard!

But the sermon closes with an unsettling hint: the arm of the Lord, when you finally see it at work, is going to look nothing like the beautiful effects it produces. For that revelation, you'll have to wait for Good Friday.

The Lamb on Mount Moriah: How Abraham Saw the Cross | Genesis 22

God told a 100-year-old man to kill the son he'd waited 25 years to receive. At first it seems like one of the most disturbing stories in the Bible. But when you see what it's really about, it turns out to be one of the most beautiful.

On the fifth Sunday of Lent (known as "Judica"), this sermon walks through Genesis 22 in vivid detail.

But the sermon doesn't stop in the Old Testament. It traces a web of connections (only son, beloved son, wood carried up a hill, a crown of thorns) that link Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac to God the Father's actual sacrifice of Jesus on the very same mountain.

Mount Moriah, it turns out, is where Jerusalem was built, where the temple stood, and where a cross was raised on Good Friday. Abraham named the place "The Lord Will Provide," and that's exactly what God did.

Where Does God's Salvation Actually Come From? | Isaiah 51:1–6

Isaiah 51 tells God's people to "look to the rock from which you were hewn." In this Lenten midweek sermon, we hear God redirect a people who are seeking Him but looking in the wrong place. He points them back to Abraham and Sarah (one man as good as dead and a barren woman) to show that His saving work has never depended on what He finds inside of us.

The sermon traces a line from Abraham's calling through to the means by which God's eternal salvation still reaches us today: the proclaimed Word, baptismal water, the Lord's Supper, and the spoken absolution. Everything in this world wears out: our bodies, our spiritual disciplines, even our religious momentum. But what goes out from God doesn't fade because it isn't made from the stuff of heaven and earth.

So we never "graduate" from the gospel that saves us. The righteousness of God always comes to us from the outside ("extra nos").

What Are Five Loaves for So Many? | John 6 and the Test of Impossible Insufficiency

Five barley loaves and two fish is all Jesus had to work with when thousands of hungry people came streaming toward Him. St. John tells us "He already knew what He was going to do." So why did He ask Philip where they'd buy bread?

This sermon from John 6 explains that Jesus deliberately tests His people with impossible insufficiency to draw their trust away from numbers and toward the Creator standing right in front of them.

But the feeding of the five thousand isn't just a story about full bellies. It's a preview of something greater. The same hands that took bread, gave thanks, and distributed it to thousands would later take bread on the night He was betrayed. This sermon traces a line from the manna in the wilderness through the miracle on the green grass all the way to the Lord's Supper and the waters of baptism. God has always sustained His pilgrim people on the journey between slavery and the promised land.

The Servant Who Turns toward Suffering — Isaiah 50 (Midweek Lent)

The Finger of God: How Jesus Defeats Satan and Fills Empty Houses | Luke 11

When Jesus heals a mute man by casting out a demon, some people accuse him of using Satan's power rather than God's. Jesus responds by explaining that He operates "by the finger of God" (the same divine power that brought plagues on Egypt!). The spiritual war between Christ and Satan continues today, and every baptized believer is caught up in it.

What we generally don't expect is for that war to look so ordinary. God's power doesn't usually look like dramatic exorcisms in our lives. Instead, it's present in the ordinary means of grace: Scripture, baptism, and the Lord's Supper. This is why Jesus warns against being a "swept house" that looks clean and respectable but remains empty of God's word. A tidy life without Christ dwelling in you through His Word is vulnerable to spiritual attack. The enemy is always prowling, looking to reclaim what he's lost.

Thankfully, Jesus calls "blessed" those who simply hear God's Word and keep it. Not those who chase after miracles or spectacular experiences, but those who faithfully receive what God gives in His means of grace. The kingdom of God has come upon us and the spiritual war is real, but Christ, the Stronger One, has already won the victory.

When Faithful Work Feels Pointless | Isaiah's Servant Songs (Part 2)

Isaiah 49 introduces us to the Servant: God's chosen one, commissioned before birth and armed with God's word. It sounds like we're off to a good start, but then the Servant openly admits that his mission seems fruitless. "I have labored in vain," he confesses, "I have spent my strength for nothing."

This sermon explores how the Servant (whom we know to be Jesus) was always intended to bring light not just to Israel, but to peoples from afar (including us in rural Minnesota two thousand years later). The text addresses us directly as "coastlands" and "peoples from afar," reminding us that our inclusion in God's family was never an afterthought. The Best Wine Kept Until Now: Jesus' First Miracle at Cana (John 2:1-11)

Running out of wine at a first-century Jewish wedding was a social disaster that people would remember forever. But when this crisis strikes at a wedding in Cana, Jesus steps in to perform his first miracle. Yet this isn't simply about keeping a party going; it's a sign that points to something much greater.

Instead of just solving the immediate problem, Jesus creates an overwhelming abundance, turning 120–180 gallons of ceremonial washing water into the finest wine anyone had ever tasted. The miracle demonstrates God's superabundant grace and points forward to Jesus' ultimate "hour": His death and resurrection. Through this first sign, we see how Jesus restores not just a wedding feast, but the spiritual fortunes of God's people.

This world pulls our loyalties in all kinds of directions. Jesus knows this, and He calls us to choose the better Master and to rest from anxious striving. The comfort of Matthew 6:24–34 is that we can seek the kingdom of God first, because we have a good Father who cares for us and provides our needs.

Life is full of storms—some caused by circumstances, others caused by our own sin. Like Jonah, we often run from God, choosing our own way instead of His. But no matter how far we go, the storm always finds us. The good news? Jesus willingly entered the storm for us—both the raging sea and the ultimate storm of sin and death—to bring us peace.

In today’s episode, we explore Matthew 8:23-27 and Jonah 1, seeing how Jesus is the true and greater Jonah. While Jonah was thrown into the sea because of his disobedience, Jesus took on the storm of God’s wrath for our disobedience. The disciples panicked when the waves crashed in, but Jesus wasn’t worried. With just a word, He calmed the sea—and by giving His life for us on the cross, He's calmed the chaos of sin in our lives.

The things that would apparently separate you from the love of Jesus in fact draw you closer to it.

The beatings, imprisonments, confiscation of property, and cruel executions that the early Church faced didn’t erode their confidence in Christ but rather galvanized it—the more we share in Christ’s sufferings, the more we’ll share in his glory!

We hear this very differently because we don’t face anything like what the early Church did. But Paul isn’t only talking about suffering for the sake of the gospel; any and every kind of suffering we face in this world riddled with sin and its effects is in view here. And though we do our best in 21st century America to block it out, creation tells us all the time that things are not right.

But here's the gospel promise: because of Christ, future glory awaits all of creation. You know it—and creation knows it, too.

Abraham had a special relationship with God, and at its core was this truth: Abraham believed in God, and God counted Abraham as righteous because of his faith.

The apostle Paul says that all who believe like Abraham are children of Abraham. In fact, this story of Abraham was recorded for our benefit, that we would have assurance that God will deal with us the same way.

The bad news: Your own attempts to make things right are not sufficient to be made right with God. ‌

The good news: Your sins are not too heinous or shameful to be forgiven by God.

There’s no “doing” required of you. This righteousness isn’t your wages, but rather it’s a gift from God to you. If you believe that God does what he says, then Jesus' death paid for your sins, and his resurrection justified you completely.

So now Jesus tells the Church: “I came down to rescue my people from the power of sin, death, and the devil. I am sending you to all the nations of the world. You must make disciples across the world. And baptize them into this name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

What’s the importance of baptism? Why do we need to be baptized into this name? Isn’t it enough to just praise the name?

Thousands of years after that, Moses' desire was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost.

Thousands of years hence, what began then has never stopped, and in the Christian Church Moses’ desire has become reality: All of God’s people are prophets, because the Holy Spirit dwells in all of us.

Last week: “If you believe in me, you’ll be continuing my works. And you’ll even be doing greater works than what I’ve done!”

This week: “The most important thing for you to focus on is that you love me for who I am and what I’ve done for you. If you do that, you’ll gladly keep my commandments. And the Holy Spirit will be present with you to help and comfort you forever!”
‌
Christian, your Lord has not forgotten you in these 2,000 years since his resurrection and ascension. He’s busily preparing a place for you. And because he knows exactly what it’s like to live in this world—to be tempted by sin, to suffer at the hands of others, to be anxious, to feel like you’re hanging on by just a thread, to be frightened by death—Jesus has made provisions for you to know comfort, peace, and truth.

There has never been a better time to be alive. And yet for all of the comforts and conveniences that we are able to enjoy, we still face things in life that make us ask: “Why, God?”

And American Christianity in general — in the land of choices, expediency, and alternate solutions — has not done a very good job in maintaining an element of our Christian heritage that goes all the way back to the prophets who wrote the Scriptures. What I’m speaking of is lament. And lament usually begins with “Why?”

Lamenting isn't fast or easy. But it’s better than growing cold, bitter, and detached.

One essential concept that our confirmands learn that ties together biblical literacy, Scripture memorization, and the grammar of the faith is the distinction between the Law and the Gospel. We use an acronym to help teach this: “S.O.S.”

What does God’s Law do? It Shows Our Sin.

And what about God’s Gospel? It Shows Our Savior.

This morning’s first reading, from Acts 2, offers an opportunity for us all to see the Law and the Gospel in action.

Whether catechized by St. Peter himself or at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rightly distinguishing Law and Gospel is crucial to knowing the love of God in Jesus Christ.

What does Jesus' resurrection mean for us today? In the history of the Church this is actually developed to a great degree. St. Peter saw the Resurrected Lord with his own eyes. Reflecting on all he'd seen, heard, and experienced, St. Peter wrote that the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus secure these things for us:

the hope of your eternal inheritance that’s beyond the reach of change and decay;
the joy that lets you weather the grievous trials of this life without giving into despair;
the promise of our faith’s legitimacy despite never having seen or touched the Resurrected One.

All these things are backed by the death and resurrection of Jesus. For shorthand, we say "Jesus died and rose again for you."

Psalm 146 sums up everything that Judah's kings (from 2 Chronicles, where we've been for all of Lent) were not.

Asa, Jehoshaphat, Joash, Uzziah, Josiah, Hezekiah.

None of them had what it took to be a good king. None of them were God; none were eternal, the creator, faithful to all their promises, perfectly just, powerful to heal our diseases, and all the rest.

King Jesus, on the other hand ... well, he's the real deal. Push your imagination as far as it'll go in imagining the perfect king, and you still can't touch the reality of King Jesus' glory, power, and love. He loves you, gave his life for you, and now lives forever so that you might live with him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness.

Manasseh's cruelty and wickedness was the tipping point in Judah's history; God said that because of Manasseh, such terrible horrors would come upon Judah that peoples' ears would tingle with fear when they heard of it. The innocent blood that Manasseh wickedly shed in Jerusalem cried out to God, demanding justice.

The innocent blood of Jesus, shed in Jerusalem to satisfy God's wrath against sin, also makes a demand of God: "Justice is satisfied! Their sins are atoned for! It is finished!" Now the gospel message goes out: because of Jesus, such amazing love is extended to the world that peoples' ears tingle with joy when they hear it. Jesus' kindness and righteousness is the tipping point in the world's history.

Hezekiah was a good king because he invited all God's people to come and receive grace from God by observing the Passover feast, remembering God's covenant with them. Many rebelled and refused the invitation, but to those who did, God was gracious and merciful just as he had promised.

The Son of Hezekiah, our Lord Jesus, surpasses this by instituting a new and better covenant and consecrating it with his own blood so that all people everywhere might receive the full forgiveness of their sins if they but come, eat & drink, and believe in the words "given and shed for you."

Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the cheers and acclamations of the crowds who would make him their king. And little do they know, later that week he will be crowned and enthroned as "King of the Judeans."

Except his crown will be made of thorns, and his throne will be the cross. And the very crowds who called out "Hosanna in the highest" will call for his death, saying "Crucify him!"

Jesus went up to Jerusalem to die for you and thus begin his reign over sin, death, and the devil. And so two thousand years later we call out with the same words as the crowds, except for we understand the true meaning: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Josiah's purification of the temple and the revival of true religion founded upon the rediscovery of God's Word within the temple prefigures Christ, the Word made flesh who was found within the temple himself — who indeed was the true Temple! — and came to inaugurate true religion that leads to God and his gifts. ‌

Where Josiah’s religious reforms culminated in a reinstitution of the Passover, Jesus’ ministry culminated with him instituting the Lord's Supper — the true and better Passover. After this, he then committed his spirit to God and died as "King of the Jews."

But unlike Josiah, Jesus didn't leave the people without a successor. Jesus, the hope of the world, rose from the grave and succeeded himself as king; not just king of the Jews, but King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

‌Grief, anger, confusion, frustration, and faith all meet in this expression. This is not a sign of weak faith but a sign of a strong one. Faith in Jesus doesn’t mean you’re supposed to weather the storms of life without bending, breaking, or showing any signs of stress.

As confirmation of this, remember that even Jesus himself was deeply moved and troubled by the pain that Mary and Martha were in. Jesus’ grief and compassion are all over this text. Why? So that you would know that he feels the same way about your grief and loss.

When Jesus healed a man born blind, everyone wanted to know "how did this happen? What did Jesus do? Why did he do that? Were you really actually born blind or are we being tricked?"

Jesus has given sight to all who believe in him, also. And we sing about it all the time! "I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see!"

It can sometimes feel, though, that if we can't answer everyone's questions about Jesus, then we must have a weak faith. But that's not the case at all. From the story of the man born blind, we learn that it's enough to say this: "I was blind, but now I see. This is what Jesus did for me."

We need a better king than Joash. But our better king was not so unlike his ancestor:

found in the temple as an infant
Hidden away (in Egypt) from the reigning royalty who sought his death
He remained in the temple as a young boy
Restored the temple to its proper use

Yet in the most important way, our better king is not like his father Joash: he did not give in to sin. And because he didn't, Jesus was able to provide us the true refuge for sinners, the true source of forgiveness, blessing, and life: Not a physical temple, but the temple of his own body and blood.

It’s true that the longer you live, the more acquainted with disappointment you become. You learn to manage your expectations and not get your hopes up too much. It’s just safer that way.

But when it comes to Jesus, wherever he finds you in your life, you don’t need to brace for impact. Your Jesus will never be harsh with you; your Jesus will never strike you or bruise you; your Jesus will never crush your spirit. In truth, he suffered all those things and more in your place, so that you would never have to. The insults, the blows, the despair that was rightly yours to suffer were borne by him on the cross.

So now we can expect from our God only love, grace, mercy, and blessing. He knows your deepest, most hidden shameful secrets. He knows exactly what kind of pain you’re in. And he wants to soothe you with his powerful love. The woman at the well let him do so; will you?

Nicodemus was a well-educated, well-credentialed, master of the (Old Testament) Scriptures. But when the one to whom the entire Old Testament pointed was standing right in front of him, Nicodemus couldn't understand it. So he started asking questions.

We do the same thing when we don't understand what God is up to, don't we? There's a bit of Nicodemus in all of us.

And that means that what was true for Nicodemus is true for us. When we're feeling confused and discouraged because we don't understand what's going on in our lives, the first word God speaks to us is this: "I loved you before you knew me, and I love you now in spite of your doubts."

What we need to know more than anything else is that Jesus loves us.

When we try to cover our own sin by saying "I'm not actually at fault in this situation," we're only lying to ourselves. And in the short term such an attitude saps our vitality from the inside out; in the long term, it sears our conscience.

The way out is easy: We uncover our sin and let Jesus cover it. That's what he came for, after all: To call those who know that they are sinners!

And when we do confess our sin and live in the light, we enjoy the blessing that comes with being forgiven by God and others.

Transfiguration Sunday means that when God does graciously grant you a mountaintop experience in your life, you can say “it’s good, Lord, to be here; thank you for this.” ‌

Transfiguration Sunday also means that you need not be afraid of leaving the mountaintop because the road to the cross is the road to your salvation. It’s the road to your redemption.
‌
Transfiguration Sunday means that wherever Jesus leads you, to the mountaintop or through the valley, your life is found in Him. You don’t gain it on the mountaintop and lose it in the valley. The hands that were nailed to the cross now hold you, and nothing in all creation can snatch you from his grip.

When we’re controlled by the Spirit, we understand that the Church is like a field and that pastors, ministers, and lay-leaders are merely laborers in the fields. We’re all the same: Hired hands given certain jobs to do. Some cultivate, others plant; some fertilize, others water; but God is the farmer who owns the field, who gives the growth by His Spirit, and who will reap the harvest on the Day of Jesus’ return.

When controlled by the Spirit, our immaturity gives way to Spirit-wrought maturity: We’re given power and grace to do the uncomfortable work of reconciling:

owning our sins against each other,‌
covering our divisions with love for each other,
forgiving as we’ve been forgiven.

When controlled by the Spirit, we understand that God is the one who gives the growth and so we all are united in this ancient confession of the Church: I follow Christ.

If the Gospel cannot be comprehended earned or comprehended by our strength, status, or intellect, then how do we come to know the gospel? How do we come to faith?
‌
This week, Paul explains how this works.
‌
The first thing he says is “This is why I preached so meekly, plainly, and simply to you: I wanted the Spirit’s power in bringing you to faith to be so obvious to you that you wouldn’t base your faith on my preaching talent."
‌
The second point is this: There is a place for wisdom within the Church, but it’s wisdom that God the Holy Spirit reveals to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit works within the speakers and hearers in the Church to impart spiritual wisdom, giving us all the “mind of Christ.”

And yet you and I still sin, none of us will escape death, and until that day comes we are routinely assaulted by the devil and his forces.

January 22, 2023 | Whose Name Were You Baptized Into?

The Corinthian church was dealing with something that nearly every church must wrestle with at some point or another: division over cults of personality. Paul makes clear to them — and to us today — that there is just no room in the Church for that kind of thing. Feeling affection toward a dear believer, in this case a particular pastor or leader, is not the issue. The problem arises when pockets of believers begin to form around loyalty to anyone other than the Lord Jesus.
‌
One of the ways in particular this worked itself out in the Corinthian church is through baptism, which is why Paul expresses relief over having not baptized many in the Corinthian congregation: That means one fewer knot to untangle!
‌
What every leader in the Church is called to do is labor toward the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ — the one crucified for us, into whose name we are baptized. As the Holy Spirit moves in the church, some are drawn more to unpretentious and plain ministry like that of St. Paul, others are drawn to generational preaching talents like Apollos. Others still are attracted to the pedigree of certain pastors like St. Peter. But all of us, when the Spirit conquers our sinful tendency to play favorites, are united in the one ancient confession of the church: “I follow Christ.”

January 15, 2023 | Not Lacking in Any Gift

When St. Paul was writing to the Corinthians, he expected the Lord Jesus to return very soon (easily within his own lifetime). This is why he mentions to the Corinthians that they’re not lacking any gift from God while they wait for Jesus to be revealed. And that bit — the waiting for Jesus part — is actually the end of a chain of three links.

God’s grace — his undeserved favor and gifts — was given to believers in the Lord Jesus Christ
This results in an enrichment all speech and all knowledge
With the result that believers are not lacking in any gift as we wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now if you’re like me, you’re completely on board with the first part of that but then when you hear that you’ve been enriched in all speech and knowledge, so that you’re not lacking any gift while you wait for the second coming, you might begin to feel a little skeptical.

Because it often feels like we could use more grace, more wisdom, more patience and love, even more favor from God (because things are not going well for us right now). In fact, you might even be annoyed or insulted at the suggestion that you don’t lack any gift while you wait for Jesus!

What this text means is that the grace, love, hope, patience, deliverance, goodness, and all the other things that you seek aren’t kept under lock and key, unavailable to you. In truth, it’s just the opposite. God has done incredible things — even giving up his own beloved Son to death on a cross! — to provide the means by which grace is delivered to you. And all that’s required of you is to simply receive that grace in faith.

Baptism unites us to Jesus in such a way that what happened at his baptism also happens at our own baptism:‌

The Holy Spirit descends upon us;‌
Heaven opens to us and the Father says “This is my beloved child; with him/her I am well-pleased;”‌
We are united to Jesus’ perfect life, atoning death, and resurrection from the grave.

Holy Baptism is one of the Christian's greatest comforts and assurances:
‌
How can you know for sure that the Holy Spirit lives within you? Well, are you baptized?
‌
How can you know for sure that God loves you? How can you know for sure that God even likes you? Well, are you baptized?
‌
How can you know for sure that your sins are forgiven, that you’ve been made righteous, that one day you’ll walk out of the grave just like Jesus? Well, are you baptized?
‌
Our own subjective sense of these things is often flighty. We’re all pretty weak, spiritually. One minute you’re feeling confident in God’s love for you and the next it seems like heaven is closed to you.

The good news is that through good times and the bad, we can point to something outside of ourselves as proof of all of God’s promises to us: If you’re baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and you receive all God’s promises to you in faith, then it’s all already accomplished, sealed, and in your possession.

January 1, 2023 | Children of God through Faith, not Law

Happy New Year! This is the time for making New Year’s Resolutions, right? Those are all predicated on the idea that if I can just change my lifestyle, then the change I’m hoping for will come. In some cases, that works! But in other cases, that’s a little unrealistic.

Perhaps part of what you’re considering as we begin a new year is how you might “be a better Christian.” You know what I mean: actually finish that Bible-in-a-year reading plan, pray every morning and every evening right before bed, make it to church more regularly, start listening to more Christian podcasts or reading Christian books — there are all kinds of options for things we can do that we think will put us on the right path with God.

The Galatian church was wrestling with a similar issue:

There was an influential group in the early church called the Judaizers. They insisted that all Christians had to conform to the Mosaic Law.

After all, Jesus was a Jew who observed all the rites, customs, and made the necessary sacrifices. And one of the most significant customs of Judaism is the circumcision of the males. God instituted this practice as a sign of the covenant he made with Abraham, and God ratified it during the days of Moses with the giving of the law. And Jesus himself was circumcised!

In fact, today is a feast day in the church year, and it’s a feast day with a name that strikes us as, well, odd and even uncomfortable: Today (Jan 1) is the Feast of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus. By the Jewish counting system, today marks 8 days after Jesus’ birth on Christmas. And all Jewish boys were circumcised and named on the 8th day after their birth.

Why is this a feast day in the Church? And what does that have to do with the Judaizers and St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians?

We celebrate the circumcision of Jesus because it signifies his complete adherence to the Law for us. All of the “doing” that the Law demands has already been done by Jesus. Being part of God’s people is no longer cultural or genetic, but something we participate in through faith. It’s not shared among blood relatives, but shared through the blood of Christ.

2,700 years ago, King Ahaz was in an impossible situation. His city, Jerusalem, was surrounded by hostile armies. Death was at the gates. The prophet Isaiah is sent to Ahaz with a message of hope. But this is a message that Ahaz rejects.

See, the despair was too deep. It was easier to give up hope than it was to have faith in God.

God would be justified in saying "Alright, Ahaz, have it your way. I tried to help you but you're not having it."

Instead, this is what God says: “Here’s how I’m going to respond to your despair and your faithlessness: A child is going to be born, and his name is going to be ‘God Is With Us’!”

God looks past the despair, the frantic attempts to engineer manmade hope (by allying with other kingdoms), and the faithlessness of Ahaz and delivers a gracious promise of hope. And this is the sign of that promise: A son, called Immanuel.

The hope that was born to Judah during the reign of King Ahaz points forward 700 years to the hope that entered into the world at Jesus’ birth. In the midst of your despair, your faithlessness, your abandonment of prayer, your inability or even your outright refusal to exercise even the smallest shred of faith in God, hope is born to you.

In the Incarnation, the Immanuel promise is truly fulfilled: God is with us in the Christ born to the Virgin Mary. Our Savior, our Deliverer, our Hope — He’s come to us.

December 11, 2022 | Returning to Zion with Everlasting Joy

Isn't it fun to give good news? In today's sermon text (Isaiah 35:1-10), the prophet gives some really good news: "Your God will come to save you!"

And 700 years after Isaiah made this announcement, it came true. In Matthew 11, Jesus quotes Isaiah 35 to make this point: The Messianic Age that Isaiah prophesied has begun! God has come to save us! He’s come to deliver us from bondage to sin, to rescue us from the domain of darkness. Physical maladies came undone in Jesus’ presence — and redemption was purchased for the world in Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension.

But Isaiah also promises that God will come "with vengeance." What's the deal with that? Once again we come back to the unique tension of the Advent season: we live in the overlap of the ages. The Messiah has come and inaugurated the kingdom of heaven by his cross, resurrection, and ascension. And we have this promise from him: That he’ll return for judgment — for vengeance! — against all who reject him and persecute his Church.

And so what do we as the Church do now? We walk the road to Zion and we prepare for Jesus’ arrival.

A major theme of advent is the relationship of Jesus’ 1st coming to his 2nd coming.

What we saw last week in Isaiah 2:1-5 has already been partially fulfilled in Jesus. But it’s not completely fulfilled in Jesus — yet! So we have reason to cry out, along with God’s people from every time and place, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!”

This week in Isaiah 11:1-10, the prophet proclaims that Jesse’s Branch — the promised Messiah — would come in the power of God’s Spirit to do two things: ‌

bring righteousness and justice among people‌
restore all of creation to perfection

Jesus has already fulfilled this in part. Because he has, we have certain hope that he will come again to fulfill the rest. And this hope gives us courage and power to love the world while we wait.

November 27, 2022 | Walking in the Light of the Lord

Advent is a short time, often thought of as little more than the freeway on-ramp to Christmas. But this is a somber season, and it's one worth observing on its own merits.

The color of the season is blue, reminding us that our Lord will return to us just as he left us: from the sky. And we wait for his return because we need his return. He has died to take away the sins of the world. He rose from the dead to break the power of death once and for all. He ascended to the Father’s right hand to take his seat as the exalted Lord of Lords.‌

But things are still not okay here! The forces of evil still are active and working on earth. Satan remains the “prince of the power of the air.” Jesus must come again to secure final victory and to judge the living and the dead.

Until he does, the Church stares into the darkness of this world — and the darkness yet within our own hearts — crying out “O Come, O Come, Immanuel!”

The Old Testament text for Advent 1A is Isaiah 2:1-5, and here’s what we’re going to see: That the “mountain of the LORD” that Isaiah prophesied is the Church of Jesus; and just like Isaiah said, people are constantly drawn out of darkness into the light of the LORD through the Gospel.

November 20, 2022 | Jesus, Preeminent in All Things

We tend to primarily think of Jesus as the one who died on the cross for our sins, and rightly so! But did you know that Jesus' atoning death has cosmic implications?

St. Paul writes to the Colossians that the sum total of God dwelled bodily in Jesus Christ. This means that Jesus' death on the cross reconciles all things, whether in heaven or on earth (that is, the entire universe). Jesus, grieving that the ancient curse should doom to death our universe, unwound that curse by the blood of his cross.

So the cross speaks to the forgiveness of our sins, yes. But the cross also means something for every unnamed planet in every unknown solar system across the universe. And the cross means something for the world that is too small for us to see with the naked eye.

And, most relevant for you, it means that Jesus isn't only the one who brings you forgiveness of sins but he's the Lord over your entire life. On the day he returns in glory, he will reign openly over all things. But for now, he reigns in the Church through the means of grace to bless us, equip us for service to others, and carry us to our eternal reward.

When God's promises feel stale and weak, remember that his love and power is shown in the fact that he speaks to us at all!

Malachi prophesied to the 4th generation since the city of Jerusalem and its temple were both rebuilt. The long-awaited Messiah (prophesied by Isaiah, Jeremiah, and others) was nowhere to be seen. God's promises were left unfulfilled, or so it seemed.

Malachi enters the scene and says "the great day of the LORD is coming! Beware, you who reject God! And be comforted, you who fear God!"

In this sermon for the penultimate Sunday of the Church Year, we'll see how Malachi's prophetic words were partially fulfilled in Jesus 2000 years ago --- and how that fulfillment will be completed on the day when Jesus returns again.

Last week we celebrated the Church Militant — that is, the Church here on earth. That’s the part of the Church that’s still fighting the good fight.

This week we celebrate the Church Triumphant — those who’ve finished their fight and now rest from their labors.

The example of the saints gives us strength and courage not because of them but because of Jesus in them and through them. The grace that was given to them is also give to us, that we may run our races, cross the finish line, and rest until the great Easter to come when all are called forth from the grave. Our celebration of the Triumphant Church consists of joining their hymn of praise to God for this grace given to both them and to us — grace that allows us to persevere through the tribulations of life without abandoning the promises of God.

The festival of All Saints is not an opportunity to focus on the saints; it’s an opportunity to recognize the depth and breadth of Jesus’ magnificent love, power, and grace for his entire church. And this is an outlet of praise — we join in their unending hymn! — and a source of comfort — we too will one day rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord as we await the resurrection and the life of the world to come.

October 30, 2022 | He Holds the Field Victorious!

Psalm 46 is the scripture that Martin Luther famously set to music in the hymn, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Sometimes this is thought of as the "Battle Hymn of the Reformation." But for Luther, this hymn was more about comfort than about triumph. Luther agonized over this question: "Where can I find a friendly God? How do I know that God isn't angry with me? How can I have peace with God?"

For the original hearers of Psalm 46, the answer was this: "There is a river who makes glad the city of God." That is, they were directed toward Jerusalem and the temple there, where God lived among his people.

But now that Jesus has come and revealed himself to be the true temple and the true source of life-giving water, we understand that peace with God is found in Jesus.

And so here's the comfort for us all: in Jesus Christ and the Church, our God is a very present help for us in all our troubles. The community of the faithful, gathered around God's Word, is a stronghold that keeps us safe and sheltered from all of life's turmoil.

October 23, 2022 | Receiving the Kingdom of God like a Child

In order to enter the kingdom of heaven at all, we must do it as children do: By faith.

Faith says what the tax collector said: “God, I am a sinner in need of your mercy. Grant it to me for the sake of Jesus Christ!”

In opposition to all this is the approach of the Pharisee - the one to whom, at least on paper, the kingdom of heaven was definitely open to! He checked all the right boxes, was pious and devout. And yet Jesus never held up the Pharisees as positive examples. Instead he called out their hypocrisy again and again.

What Jesus requires of those who’d receive the kingdom is that they receive it humbly, by faith. Adults, we have a hard time with this because we see a matured intellect handling the Word of God and we mistake it for faith.

But faith is not the same thing as a rational mind interacting with God's promises. Faith is God's work in us.

God has promised so much to us. The breadth and depth of what God has done for us is something we’re going to marvel at for all eternity.

But sometimes, even oftentimes, we get lax and lazy. We don’t take hold of what God has done. In fact, we take it for granted. And granted to us it is! But we don’t appreciate it, we don’t build our lives upon it. We don’t trust the one who’s proven himself to be trustworthy.

So God challenges us. He starts a wrestling match with us. Not to beat us, but that we stretch ourselves in order to lay claim to what God has already promised. Like Jesus wrestling Jacob into submission, God will wrestle with us until we, too, say “Bless me, God! Bless me!”

The Old Testament book of Ruth is a story. What makes stories good? Relatable characters, an engaging setting, rising and falling tension. All things you might have covered in middle school English classes.

Another narrative device that’s often used to spice up a story is the surprise reveal. Such a reveal hardly ever occurs at or near the beginning of a story, because then it would just be part of the exposition. Sometimes it comes at the end of the story, and in that case it reframes the entire story up to that point. Other times the surprise doesn’t even come until another installment in the saga!

The story of Ruth contains elements of both these kinds of narrative surprises. Some foreshadowing is apparent right from the start, but it’s not until the genealogy at the end of the story that you realize just how significant this love story is: the mundane happenings of family relocations, loyalty amid great turmoil, harvest, and more all led to the birth of Christ centuries later.

And this is true for your life, too: the significance of what God is doing in and through us is often hidden from us, but because God has chosen you in Christ, he's thereby also chosen each one of you for his grand purposes.

And one day, better and sweeter than any plot twist we know of, we’ll see how God did amazing and glorious things through each one of you.

Centuries ago, one of God's prophets wondered if God was still really for His people. Was He even still with His people?

The book of Habakkuk, tucked in near the end of the Old Testament, follows the conversation between the titular prophet and God. And here's the answer to Habakkuk's questions:

Yes, God is still for us and with us. He always is and always will be. If circumstances seem to contradict that, don't lose hope. Don't grow impatient. When we're surrounded by reasons to give up hope and despair, God's saved saints live by faith.

Things we run away from and things we run toward both have something in common: they're something outside of us that empowers us and excites us to run. In 1 Timothy 6, the Apostle Paul gives Christians something to both run from and something to run toward.

What are we supposed to flee? The love of money, because this love is a root of all kinds of evil.

What are we supposed to pursue? Righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.

Paul calls this endeavor "fighting the good fight of the faith." And how do we accomplish this? By embracing contentment with regard to the things of this life, contentment built on this fact: Jesus Christ has already made us wealthy beyond comprehension.

Ever since the fall from grace (back in the Garden of Eden), creation has not been what it was meant to be.

But now, in these days between the completed work of Jesus Christ and his return for judgment, what once was and what shall be in the age to come is also blooming into flower here and now.

And this happens first of all in the church.

In St. Paul's first letter to Timothy, we see how the completed work of Jesus Christ enables God's men and women to live together in harmony as they lead quiet and dignified lives, praying for all people to be saved --- and all of this pleases God.

And more than just sharing fellowship with sinners, Jesus searches for us in our lost place and rejoices when he finds us. All the wealth and splendor of heaven — that is, the life of the Son of God — is spent for your sake, to purchase you, to redeem you.

And that great cost is not held against you; Jesus rejoices as he carries you, like a lamb on his shoulders. There's no better news could there be than this: The Lord of the Cosmos desperately wants to find us and rescue us from sin, death, and the devil.

In this life, good works are commanded of Christians. But they are not a means by which we earn our salvation or eternal life; Jesus earned both of those for us by his crucifixion and resurrection.

Hebrews 13 provides a Christian social ethic for believers: practice brotherly love and hospitality, be compassionate to those who are imprisoned or downtrodden, honor the estate of marriage, strive to be content, and remain sincerely devoted to God.

But we're not responsible for making all this happen in our own lives; the same God who saved us by grace also works within us that which is pleasing to him. The life of the Christian is began, sustained, and perfected all by the grace of God.

The door to everlasting life and salvation stands open, and the Lord Jesus welcomes all who approach. But that door isn't going to stay open forever. In Luke 13, Jesus explains that when that door is shut (on the last day), many will knock and say "Let us in! We went to church and participated in the life of our congregation" and Jesus will say "Depart from me; I never knew you!"

Our assurance of salvation then rests only in this: That we know and trust Jesus as our only hope in life and death, and because of that he knows us and will never cast us out.

Sometimes believing in Jesus is easy. When "all is as it should be" the truth of the Gospel and all of God's promises to us seems self-evident.

But other times—perhaps most of the time—faith feels like running uphill or swimming against the current. From where do we draw strength to keep running the race set before us?

We find encouragement in the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us, like a crowd of fans at a track meet cheering us on from every direction. And we persevere to the end by setting our eyes on Jesus, who persevered to the end by setting his eyes on us.
