What Did Captain Thomas Mantell Chase? An Interview With His Grandson, Terry Mantell

This week, UFO Talker returns to one of the most important—and tragic—cases from the early history of the UFO phenomenon.

Originally released as Season 1, Episode 21, on January 18, 2023, this episode features an in-depth interview with Terry Mantell, grandson of Captain Thomas F. Mantell.

On January 7, 1948, military personnel at Godman Army Airfield in Kentucky observed an unidentified object in the sky. Captain Mantell, a decorated Second World War pilot serving with the Kentucky Air National Guard, was asked to investigate while flying a P-51 Mustang near the area.

Mantell climbed in pursuit of the object, but his aircraft crashed near Franklin, Kentucky. He was only 25 years old. The case made headlines around the world and became one of the earliest and most consequential military UFO encounters in American history.

Terry Mantell discusses the man behind the famous case: a courageous D-Day pilot, husband and father whose family spent decades searching for answers about his death. We examine Mantell’s distinguished wartime service, his extensive flying experience and the profound effect his loss had on his wife, children and mother.

SUMMER “BEST OF” REPEAT SERIES
Season 3, Episode 5 — Originally aired November 7, 2024

Two aircraft. Two encounters near Gander International Airport. Three experienced pilots—and an unidentified object that appeared to pace their aircraft.

In this summer repeat, Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott revisit a remarkable series of UFO encounters over central Newfoundland in October 1974, documented in the files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

On the night of October 10, 1974, John Breen was flying a Cessna back to Gander from Deer Lake with passenger Janice Gould when they noticed a mysterious green luminous object below the aircraft. Breen was not only a pilot but also an air traffic controller at Gander International Airport.

For approximately 25 minutes, the strange light appeared to pace the Cessna—moving ahead, dropping behind and returning beneath the aircraft. Breen even switched off his own aviation lights to make sure they weren't responsible for what he was seeing.

As the Cessna approached Gander, Breen contacted air traffic control. Controllers attempted to locate the object and a target appeared on Gander radar for two sweeps before disappearing. According to the RCMP report, the target did not appear on the radar screen as an aircraft.

But the story wasn't over.

In the early morning hours of October 11, the captain and co-pilot of a Capital Airlines DC-8 descending toward Gander International Airport encountered another unidentified object.

This time the object displayed flashing red and white lights and flew alongside the DC-8 for approximately five to seven minutes. It would move slightly ahead of the jet before returning alongside it—the same strange pacing behaviour reported during the Cessna encounter.

Both pilots stated that, in their opinion, the object was not an aircraft. Air traffic control did not detect another target during this second encounter.

Authorities connected with the early-warning defence system at Goose Bay were notified, and the RCMP report was ultimately forwarded to the National Research Council in Ottawa.

What were these objects? And why did two different aircraft encounter something displaying remarkably similar behaviour near the same major international airport within hours of one another?

Three women reported seeing an enormous UFO hovering over their Calgary apartment complex on January 2, 1975. According to statements taken by the RCMP, the silent grey craft approached from the distance before stopping approximately 350 feet above them.

Using the apartment building as a reference, the investigating officer estimated that the object may have measured approximately 180 feet long and 120 feet wide. The witnesses described brilliant lights around the craft and an unusual tan, Y-shaped marking across its underside.

The encounter became even stranger when the women reported that the normally populated area seemed strangely deserted. One witness screamed and jumped up and down as a man walked past, yet he apparently failed to notice either her distress or the massive object overhead.

Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott examine whether this disturbing sense of isolation could represent the “Oz Factor”—a sensation of altered reality sometimes reported during close UFO encounters. They also consider whether the witnesses may have experienced missing time.

In the summer of 1973, two young sisters were playing outside their family home in rural northern Maine when they looked up and saw something extraordinary—a huge, silent, saucer-shaped object hovering above them.

Season 3 Episode 11. As part of UFO Talker's Summer "Best Of" Repeat Series, we revisit one of the most fascinating and little-known Canadian UFO encounters on record.

On October 24, 1970, near MacGregor, Manitoba, a young farmer named Gerald Adams reported an extraordinary experience that would eventually attract the attention of the RCMP, the Canadian Military, and the National Research Council of Canada.

According to Adams, what began as the observation of a strange object in the night sky soon evolved into something far more remarkable. Returning to the location after dropping off his girlfriend, Adams reported encountering a landed UFO and observing a small humanoid figure wearing what appeared to be a metallic silver suit and helmet. He would later state that he approached to within approximately fifty feet of both the object and the figure.

The case was taken seriously enough that Adams was interviewed by Captain G.M. Winterburn of the Canadian Forces Operations Centre. The interview was recorded on reel-to-reel tape, and correspondence involving the RCMP and government scientists followed. Questions remain to this day about missing RCMP documentation connected to the investigation and whether the original military recordings still exist.

Season 4 Episode 37.  This is our 150th episode of UFO Talker.  Host Michael Ryan interviews the co-founders of UAP-PD, retired Arizona police officers Marianne Robb and Dave Rich.  During this special 150th episode of UFO Talker, Dave Rich discusses a chilling 911 Ghost Call he investigated at an Arizona high school - a case that continues to raise disturbing questions about what really happened.  Marianne Robb shares the story of an Arizona police officer who witnessed a UFO flying at tree-top level near the same area where Travis Walton was abducted in 1975.

Marianne also recounts a terrifying paranormal investigation involving two police officers responding to a wellness check.  While outside the home, the officers heard a blood-curdling scream from a woman that was captured on police body cam - despite the fact that no woman was found anywhere inside the house. In the opening segment, Michael Ryan and Christine Scott discuss the second major release of UFO related information from the U.S. government and what some of the newly released files may reveal.

Season 4 Episode 35.  Host Michael Ryan interviews David Barnett who was the sonar operator the night of The Southland Encounter.  During the third week of February 1987 the New Zealand Frigate HMNZS Southland was 175 miles off the coast of the North Island of New Zealand.  At 1 am the ship started tracking a USO that was 20 kms behind the vessel.  After 30 minutes the USO went from 20kms behind to underneath the warship in less than 30 seconds.  At that point the Southland loss all power and was set adrift.  Sonar operator David Barnett gives a very detailed interview about what happened that night.  Also on this episode Christine Scott and Michael Ryan review the U.S. Governments new UFO secret files dump.  If you would like to find out more about the McMenamins UFO Festival go here. Season 4 Episode 24.  Host Michael Ryan interviews retired RCMP Cst. James Blackwood.  At around 2 am on the night of October 26, 1978 he received a call that there was a UFO hovering over the bay in Clarenville, Newfoundland.  When Blackwood drove down to the bay he couldn't believe what he was seeing.  A large UFO hovering roughly 100 feet above the water.  For the next two hours Cst. Blackwood and a few civilians watched the craft with binoculars and a telescope.  Over the next two weeks Cst. Blackwood gave interviews on U.S., Canadian and British television and hundreds of newspaper interviews. During this interview Cst. Blackwood reveals for the first time that two U.S. Air Force personnel interviewed him about the incident one year later.  They recored the interview and also took notes.  If you would like to find out more about Phenomecon 2026 go here.  This episode is dedicated to RCMP Sgt. Season 4 Episode 15.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into another case taken from the files of the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).  On the night of April 6, 1976 two teenage girls were sitting in a car in the parking lot of the Skyline Hotel waiting for the mother of one of the girls to get off her shift.  While they were waiting they see a large UFO hover over the hotel and disappear behind the building like it was going to land.  This was followed by a bright flash of light.  The RCMP interviews the girls until 2 in the morning.  We read from a transcript that was made from each of the girls interviews.  Also, on today's episode we are joined by Joy who helps us pick the winner of our Christmas draw. Season 4 Episode 12.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into RCMP documents from 1967 to try and unfold the mystery of what happened on the nights of October 22nd and October 29th, 1967.  On this nights at least five witnesses (possibly as many as eight) saw two UFOs that were hovering 15 feet above the highway.  In documents that were uncovered we can clearly see that the Canadian military was very interested in this case.  The case was being handled by very high ranking military personnel.  If you would like to find out more about the Society for UAP Studies event in Erlangen, Germany go here.   If you would like to find out more about the UAP Summit go here.

Season 4 Episode 3.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into a case that was investigated by the RCMP in 1976.  At 2:55 AM on October 3, 1976  Joseph Robichaud was driving on a dark, deserted road in New Brunswick, Canada.  He soon found himself being chased by a red UFO that was as large as a house.  Trying to get away from the UFO he reached speeds of 115 mph.  The UFO was right above his car.  This is another UFO report taken from the files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).  The case was investigated by constable J. Summer rerun series.  From Season 3 Episode 22.  In this episode that was originally aired on March 26, 2025 host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott discuss this case from 1978.  On the night of April 6, 1978 a woman was putting her horses away for the night when a beam of light shot from a UFO and went through the window of her barn.  The three horses in the barn went crazy and she called for help.  Eventually 12 people came to the farm and saw the UFO.  This sighting was investigated by constable J. N. Holyk from the Prince George, British Columbia detachment.

J. Howard.

Season 1 Episode 39.  In this episode that originally aired on May 24, 2023 host Michael Ryan interviews UK UFO investigator and Chairman of the Birmingham UFO Group, Dave Hodrien.  They discuss three military cases that Dave has investigated.  The first is a 300 yard long UFO this is surrounded by 3 black helicopters near Staffordshire, England in 2014.  The second case involves a British soldier, who in 1962, saw a UFO at close range while on duty near Singapore.  It was witnessed by a group of soldiers from his unit.  The third case is a sighting that is still classified until this day.  Several military personnel from an Air Force base in Greece witness a large, black triangle UFO hovering over the base for 10 minutes.

Season 3 Episode 26.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott discuss another case taken from the files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  On a chilly night October 3, 1981 Albert Punch, his wife and 3 children went by boat to Cochrane Bay in Island Lake to chop some fire wood.  What they encountered was a large UFO that at times chased them and followed them for 30 minutes.  The UFO had the effect of killing their outboard motor.  This amazing case was investigated by Cst. Season 3 Episode 22.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott discuss this case from 1978.  On the night of April 6, 1978 a woman was putting her horses away for the night when a beam of light shot from a UFO and went through the window of her barn.  The three horses in the barn went crazy and she called for help.  Eventually 12 people came to the farm and saw the UFO.  This sighting was investigated by constable J. N. Season 3 Episode 21.  On episode 16 host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott discussed an RCMP report from 1971 in which 4 people saw a UFO hover near a compressor station in Success, Saskatchewan.  Host Michael Ryan was able to find and contact the investigating officer, Sgt. Carl Lentowicz and Carl talks about the investigation.  As a bonus, after host Michael Ryan and Sgt. Carl Lentowicz discuss the case from 54 years ago, Sgt. Season 3 Episode 20.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into a case taken from an RCMP report.  On January 1, 1970 nurse Doreen Kendall saw a UFO hovering just 60 feet from her third floor window at the Cowichan District Hospital.  She saw two humanoid figures through a clear dome on the UFO.  At one point both of the figures were looking back at her.  Several other nurses saw the UFO also and back up Kendall's sighting.  RCMP Sgt. Season 3 Episode 17.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott review another case from the RCMP files.  This encounter took place on January 2, 1975 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Sometime around 11:15 pm Mrs. Verna Strachan, her daughter Wendy Strachan and Linda Marino see a UFO over their apartment building that is approximately 180 feet long by 120 feet wide hovering at about 350 feet above them.  This case was investigated by corporal D. From August into September 1971 a mysterious  UFO appeared over Sugarloaf Mountain in the town of Campbellton, New Brunswick.  The discussion focuses on the RCMP report written by Corporal G. W. Season 3 Episode 7.  Host Michael Ryan interviews the President of UFOBC.  In a far ranging interview Dr. Tortorella talks about the 1970 Duncan UFO Incident and why recent claims that it was a hoax are incorrect.  Dr. Tortorella also remembers Canadian ufologist John Musgrave and the body of work that he left behind.  They also talk about a case called Cabin in the Cariboo.  A man recently called UFOBC and told them about an abduction that happened to him over 50 years ago in the Cariboo (the interior of British Columbia).  They found his story credible and the fact that he was able to take an object from the craft and left behind near the cabin and lake where he was abducted.  In 2025 UFOBC is set to search for this object which may prove aliens exist.  If you would like to check out the UFOBC website go here.

Season 3 Episode 6.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a look at an internal RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) document that proves that the Canadian Military had or still has a military unit that investigates UFOs.  They also look into The Putnam Incident.  Virtually unknown is the story of train Brakeman Mr. R. C. Putnam who witnessed a UFO flying along side his train.  Mr. Putnam reported to the RCMP and the Canadian Military serious effects to his health from the craft.  This incident happened on October 25, 1967.

Season 3 Episode 5.  Host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into two separate UFO encounters by two aircraft near Gander International Airport on October 10, 1974 and October 11, 1974.  The first UFO was seen by pilot John Breen who was flying his Cessna with his passenger Janice Gould.  The UFO played cat and mouse with them for 25 minutes.  On the second night the pilot and co-pilot of a Capital Airlines DC-8 was followed by a UFO while on final descent to Gander International Airport.  These two cases are taken directly from the files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Rerun series.  From Season 2 Episode 28.  In this episode that originally aired on March 13, 2024 host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into The Bear Point Incident.  Five witnesses from two locations see between 5 and 6 UFOs from two different locations in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Lawrence Smith and his brother Gene first see the UFOs near Bear Point (which is not that far from Shag Harbour).  The second set of witnesses, Cpl. Timothy Nielson (from CFS Barrington), June Smith and Cathelene Smith (not related to Lawrence and Gene Smith) see almost the same set of UFOs from an area near Smithville, Nova Scotia.  Also involved in the investigation was Commanding Officer Cal Rushton (CFS Barringtron) and RCMP officer R. E. Season 2 Episode 30.  Host Michael Ryan and Commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into The Prochner Farm Incident.  During the early morning hours  of August 4, 1968 three members of the Prochner family witnessed a large UFO hovering over their house and their barn.  The farm was located near Qu'appelle, Saskatchewan.  The three family members were father William Prochner, his son Kenneth and Kenneth's grandmother Julius Prochner.  There was also evidence of the UFO landing on the Prochner farm as well.  This was investigated by RCMP constable F. In the Season 2 opener Michael Ryan and Christine Scott take a deep dive into an incredible UFO encounter.   On October 4, 1955 U.S. Senator Richard Russel, CIA agent Ruben Efron and Lt. Col. E.U. Summer Series Rerun.  In this episode that originally aired on January 25, 2023, host Michael Ryan interviews U.S. soldier David Marceau who had an encounter in 1992 with a UFO that was 100 feet long and 50 feet wide late at night while he was on guard duty at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown.  The base at Gagetown is a massive (over 420 square miles) training facility.  Home of the 5th Canadian Division, it is a major training location for several Canadian units.  NATO forces also train there with U.S. Army units as well.  Also the site of several UFO sightings in the early 2000s.  David's encounter was also featured on an episode of Unidentified where he met Luis Elizondo.  David shares his opinion of Mr. Elizondo during the interview.  If you would like to read David Marceau's blog check it out here.

Summer Series Reruns.  Part 2 of episode #14 from Season 1.  Michael Ryan interviews Australian UFO investigator Shane Ryan about the 1966 Westall School encounter in Melbourne, Australia.  Shane talks about a witness that was almost able to touch the landed UFO.  You can follow Shane Ryan's investigations into the Westall school encounter on his Facebook page here.   Also on this episode is an eyewitness account of a large, black triangle UFO seen over Sudbury, Ontario in 2010.  The witness estimates the UFO to be no higher than 200 feet above his head and as large as a passenger airliner.
