In this episode of Fortitude, hosts Heather and Amos Kittleson sit down with Bintu and Luc, a remarkable couple with a compelling story that spans continents. Bintu shares her journey from the Congo to Belgium, her escape from war, and her mission to bring hope and education back to her homeland through her nonprofit, Future Hope Africa. 

Luc, who was atheistic most of his life, recounts his unexpected path to faith and how it led him to meet Bintu. They met in 2019 and were married shortly after in May 2021. Despite their diverse backgrounds, both have come together with a shared purpose. From anecdotes about life in Africa and Europe to insights on overcoming cultural and personal challenges. 

Bintu Bio: Grew up in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, adjacent to Lake Kivu and Rwanda. Throughout the 1990’s violence emanating from neighboring Rwanda and an indigenous civil war in the DRC (Zaire at the time) created much instability, chaos and death across the region. Bintu and her siblings fled Bukavu, stayed in Nairobi, Kenya for a year, and Bintu eventually travelled to Belgium and began university studies in the city of Mons, south of Brussels.  While in Mons she attended the English-language “International Baptist Church” which is attended by Americans posted to the nearby NATO facility (SHAPE). 

As Bintu continued her studies in Belgium her thoughts were never far from Bukavu and the families suffering there. While many people fled the Zaire/DRC and made new lives in Europe or the United States, Bintu envisioned returning to Bukavu to use her education to improve life for her fellow Congolese. In Belgium she earned her Bachelor’s degree in French Education and an MS in Social Development.

As security slowly returned to South Kivu, Bintu returned in 2008 to begin the process to open an education center in Bukavu. She and a few colleagues eventually started two centers—one assisted local teachers in improving French language instruction, the other provided homework assistance and tutoring in French and Swahili to children.

— In 2012 - American supporters incorporated a 501(c)3 organization, Future Hope Africa (FHA) to provide a financial and spiritual foundation to E-Asbl.

— Since 2016, the “FHA - Kanega Education Centre No.1” organizes and conducts entrepreneurial seminars that teach Biblically-based business models to adults, as well as leadership classes to prepare youth for the future. 

Bintu remains FHA’s Director of Operations at the Bukavu center and travels to Europe and the U.S. advocating Christian education for D.R. Congo.

Albert Huizing is a steadfast man whose life story is a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of unwavering parents and community. Albert shares his journey of experiencing family bankruptcy and living in poverty as a child to becoming a successful family man, business owner and author. In 2014, Jeremy married Brooke, whose innate healing gifts would prove providential. God blessed them with four more sons—Barron, Justus, Bennett, and Jace. When Bennett was born with severe bilateral clubfoot in 2021, the Browns embarked on a faith-led journey across 25 states seeking natural healing solutions. Their complementary strengths shone through: Brooke mastered innovative therapy techniques and road schooling the boys while Jeremy managed their growing businesses and travel logistics.

This journey led to the development of the Bennett Method and the founding of Apricity Space, where Brooke now helps other children heal naturally through specialized therapies. Meanwhile, Jeremy has expanded into real estate development.

The Browns continue to travel extensively, home/road schooling their sons with a focus on biblical principles, leadership skills, and constitutional rights. Their success stems from unwavering convictions: truth and honor guide every decision, whether in business or family life.

Dylan, the founder and President of Wheelchair Adventures. Born and raised in South Dakota, Dylan's life took a significant turn when a car accident/suicide attempt at the age of 18 resulted in a C2/C3 spinal cord injury, leaving him as a quadriplegic.

For years following his injury, Dylan believed he would never be able to enjoy activities he once loved, such as being an avid outdoorsman. However, his perspective changed when he discovered adaptive equipment that allowed him to participate in hunting and fishing, opening up a new world of outdoor enjoyment while living in a wheelchair. Dylan has successfully engaged in deer, turkey, and antelope hunting using an adaptive gun mount and track wheelchair. He has also experienced the thrill of Walleye fishing with an electric reel.

Dylan's passion lies in finding or creating adaptive equipment and experiences for individuals with disabilities to enjoy outdoor sports. He named his organization Wheelchair Adventures, as he believes that every day in a wheelchair is an adventure. Dylan understands the ups and downs of life and emphasizes the importance of taking it one day at a time. His favorite motto is "adapt and overcome."

In addition to his work with Wheelchair Adventures, Dylan works part-time at Nybergs Ace and resides in Sioux Falls, SD with his service dog, Linda.

Collision started in Sioux Falls SD because of a student’s passion at Lincoln High School and today, the organization serves students at all Sioux Falls middle and high schools and most recently across the nation. John’s work with Collision has given him a platform to speak at conferences and work with other leaders from around the nation who are looking to impact youth in a growing post-Christian culture. He also travels frequently to Ukraine to speak and train up leaders who come alongside youth to share and live out their faith.

John is married to Angie, and they have three wonderful children. When John isn’t being a husband, dad, serving students and staff, or sharing vision with supporters (yes, this is one busy guy), you will find him on the Sioux Falls bike trail peddling and praying for his family, Collision, students, and the city of Sioux Falls.

They serve and lead a church family called Activation.  The church birthed in their house in 2020 during Covid and has continued to grow and thrive over the past few years.  They live out of the book of Acts every day honoring their call to serve the body of Christ.  They also co-founded a ministry called Action 169 which raises awareness around sex trafficking.  Michael also works with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in NW Iowa developing that ministry in the schools of NW Iowa and seeing many young people come to Christ!  They have been all across the midwest preaching the gospel seeing many hundreds come to Jesus Christ for the first time.  Most recently they were in Malawi Africa where they saw over 6,000+ come to Christ within the schools in Malawi.  Serving the Lord has been the greatest call of Michael's life.  They believe the best is yet to come in the Kingdom of God!

 In this heartwarming episode of "Fortitude," meet Reid and Jessi Johnson, a devoted couple living in Sioux Falls, SD. With seven children, ranging from six months to nineteen years old, Reid and Jessi's lives are a beautiful tapestry of love and adoption.

Reid, who was adopted as a baby from Menno, South Dakota, had his own extraordinary adoption story. When he was seven, he traveled to Romania with his parents, where they welcomed a six-month-old boy into their family. This early experience of adoption sparked a deep love for the power of family and instilled a desire to give back.

Years later, as Reid entered his senior year of high school, he had a life-changing experience - he met his biological family. This newfound connection with his parents, brother, and twin half-sisters opened his heart even further, creating a strong bond that has lasted to this day.

In 2017, Reid and Jessi crossed paths and discovered an unexpected commonality - they each had three children from previous relationships. This shared experience of blended families became a natural talking point as they embarked on their journey together.

In June 2020, Reid and Jessi decided to join their families, bringing all their children together. Although their wedding plans were delayed by the unforeseen circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, they remained resolute in their commitment to one another and were married the following summer.

Their love and dedication to family grew as Reid officially adopted Jessi's children in March 2022. And in May 2023, they joyfully welcomed their first child together, completing their beautiful blended family.

Despite the demands of juggling a busy schedule, Reid and Jessi understand the importance of carving out quality time for their loved ones. They find solace in their faith, always remaining true to the Lord who has blessed them with abundant love and unwavering support.

From 2014 to 2021, Paul, Bethany, and their children lived in Haiti full-time, passionately devoting themselves to serving the Haitian community. Paul serves as the Executive Director of Mission-Haiti, guiding the organization's efforts to bring sustainable development and hope to the Haitian people. Bethany fills the role of the Administrative Medical Director, bringing her expertise and compassionate care to those in need.

It’s been five years since Tenton’s tragic football accident, which resulted in him becoming paralyzed. Through his life changing injury Trenton has remained “Trenton Strong” with a community of friends and family surrounding him and cheering him on every day. Recently Trenton graduated from SDSU in mechanical engineering and now works full time at Raven. He continues to speak around the region - sharing his personal story and love for Jesus Christ. 

Hearing Missy’s side of the story as Trenton’s mom is heartbreaking and heartwarming in so many ways.  What transpired for Missy and Jeff during and after the accident is not your typical tragic story. They had family, friends and community surrounding them and hanging on to ALL of the Lord’s promises.

Desiree Schmidt had the perfect pregnancy. She was 1 week overdue when she went into labor and everything from that point spiraling out of control for her and baby Sawyer.  This amazing women has gone through more than any single mama should ever go through. 

Her son, Sawyer is now 7yr. He has Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy due to a traumatic birth. He suffered from lack of oxygen for an extended amount of time during birth, which resulted in a severe brain injury. He was not supposed to live past his first week of life, but Desiree and her family has been blessed to spend the last 7 years with him.

Sawyer has an extensive list of diagnoses, requires 20 different medications daily, relies on several different machines & equipment to keep him alive and healthy and is completely dependent on his parents for every single aspect of his care. He requires round the clock care and it is certainly tiring & challenging many days, but Desiree is truly blessed beyond measure to have him here and be the one who get to love and care for him daily - he is truly such a miracle and gift. 

In this episode we touch on so many topics around caring for a disabled loved one, how we as a society can better wrap our arms around families like Desiree & Sawyer and how we need to get more curious and ask the right questions when faced with beautiful 'differences.'

It was one of the biggest nights of Lon’s professional career when Lon received a call from his only daughter Grace while driving to his company's acquisition celebration. It was the kind of call that no parent expected to get.

Lon’s daughter, Grace, was very active in multiple school activities, and church and loved spending time with her family. She hid her pain and suffering very tightly. Nobody really knew or understood what Grace was going through. Nothing would have ever pointed to depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts. 

At age 15, Grace was sexually assaulted at a high school party. Grace was living with shame, guilt, and disbelief but she decided to tell her parents what had happened right away. Both Lon and his wife listened and did all the ‘things’ parents should do to ‘deal’ with the ‘problem’ and within a year they had moved on and considered the situation closed. However, that wasn’t the case for Grace. After years of pain and reliving the trauma, Grace was having suicidal thoughts. 

Grace is thriving and doing wonderful through treatment, TLC from family and friends, and therapy. It’s taken a lot of hard work and it has been so worth it. Grace shares her story and wisdom alongside her father Lon who shares his story from the parent's perspective. 

This father-daughter is priceless! 

Lon’s Bio (Aug. 2023): Lon is the founder and CEO of Normal 40 - a movement that inspires people to declare their future, and provides the tools to chase it. In 2022, Lon left his corporate job on a hunch that the world was asking more of him. Without a resume, a business plan, or independent wealth, but with the support of his wife and family, he separated from the W2 race. Then, on another hunch, he launched Normal 40. Lon dedicated most of 2022 to capturing the stories of people from across the globe who felt like their best days were in front of them, that they wouldn’t live in their current capacity, but they didn’t know how to transition. These conversations, and the hard choices we all eventually face, became his motivation for this book 

Lon’s mission is to inspire change in a thousand lives. And he will know he has been successful when he has a thousand notes of thanks from people who have been impacted by the change. Lon is a pilot and loves traveling with his family, or getting dirty at the family farm near Warner, SD.

Raised in the Bronx by a single mamma and older sister, Manny found himself in 'fight' mode most of his childhood and young adult years. Living in a constant state of survival in the middle of the crack/cocaine crisis, amongst some of the toughest  gangs and drug lords, Manny managed to escape this destructive and dangerous lifestyle.

What is Narcissistic Behavior Disorder? 

Definition from Wikipedia: a personality disorder characterized by a life-long pattern of exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration and a delusional sense of status, diminished ability or unwillingness to empathize with others' feelings, and interpersonally exploitative behavior. 

Mayo’s Description: Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence, they are not sure of their self-worth and are easily upset by the slightest criticism.

A narcissistic personality disorder causes problems in many areas of life, such as relationships, work, school or financial matters. People with narcissistic personality disorder may be generally unhappy and disappointed when they're not given the special favors or admiration that they believe they deserve. They may find their relationships troubled and unfulfilling, and other people may not enjoy being around them.

Brandi is a South Dakota native, and mother to her beautiful daughter Kira.

Single motherhood began for her with the birth of her daughter in 2004. Throughout the years, they have stayed by each other's side and developed an inseparable bond as they tackled various obstacles.

Just out of High School, Kira talks about her journey dealing with issues like, social media, the pressures of being an athlete, self-acceptance, friendships, and dealing with manipulation and emotional abuse. She shares how she became stronger with the help of God's grace and love.

Marta Sauret Greca is the CEO of 'Media - The Creative Agency', wife to Micheal, mother of 6, minimalist, podcaster, author, speaker, and entrepreneur.

At the young age of 9 years old Marta migrated to the USA from Italy with her parents and 4 siblings. Her father accepted a job in the states as a collegiate professor and her mother was a full time mom in a foreign country, no work visa and didn't speak much English. To say the least - Marta's mother was a saint in the circumstances that she found herself in. 
 
At the age of 12, Marta started to rebel and started gravitating towards those that were 'accepting' of her and eventually started influencing her into a world of drugs, alcohol, theft and abuse which robbed her of her teenage years. Marta found herself arrested and in out-patient rehab at age 15. The world around her was looking pretty grey until she decided to turn things around and now Marta is living her best life.

Pornography and sexual addiction needs to be addressed and openly talked about! If you have internet access and smart phones under your roof - you, your spouse and your children have direct access to pornography and predators are lurking for access to your children.

What are you doing to monitor this access? It almost always starts 'by accident' and we can not pretend anymore or use ignorance as an excuse.  We have a huge pandemic going on that needs serious attention.

Most marriages would not survive what Nate and Maggie Blaylock went through many years ago and because of the severity of Nate's sexual addiction  - it led to multiple affairs, hiding, lying, embarrassment and paralyzing shame. Brett and Kari lived with undeniable loss and discouragement during the first several years of their marriage.  Their story is unfortunately very common among so many couples in our world today. The story of miscarriage and infertility is hard and very discouraging.

Through their grief and loss - they found divine strength and comfort through Christs love, each other and their community. 

Brett and Kari have been married for 11.5 years. They met in college at the University of Sioux Falls. Kari grew up in Steen, Mn and Brett grew up in Alcester, SD. They have 2 kiddos and 5 angel babies.

Elena Evans was born in Russia and later adopted by a family in Minnesota.

Elena was born with a rare medical condition which resulted in amputation of both of her feet at the tender age of four years old. Assured by her doctors that with the help of prostheses, she could be as active as any other child.

From the outside, it may seem as though Elena’s obstacles would consume her life. On the contrary; Elena rose in the face of adversity. Her energy and determination in life is contagious, and she likes to say her story is just being written.

Elena hopes to encourage others to live purposefully and share their abilities and passions, no matter the obstacle. She inspires those around her everyday and she continuously makes a lasting impact for Christ's Kingdom.
 
The Shiners have played a significant part in Elena's story - through surgeries, the healing process and fitting the right prosthetics. You can watch the whole story from this childhood video that was produced by the Shiners and this recent article.

Kim Sanow is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice. Kim Sanow was born in the inner-city of St. Paul, raised in a challenging home and spent most of her teen years living on a farm. 
Kim met and married the love of her life, Jerry, and they were married for 40 years before Jerry passed away from prostate cancer in 2020. They spent most of their married life living on their peaceful farm, making wonderful memories with their four beautiful daughters. Each of their daughters are happily married and Kim has total of seven grandchildren and one more on the way. 

Kim grew up with an ambivalent attachment style due to neglect, verbal and emotional abuse. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at age 19, and has studied the Scriptures ever since. It is truly the lens she views all relationships and the world around her.

Chris is a Sioux Falls SD native, married to his soulmate Cori, and a father of 4 beautiful kiddos.

Chris has been on a life long journey of hurt and pain but today he celebrates life and appreciates all of his adversities.

At age 7, Chris was hit by a drunk driver riding his bike in his neighborhood and almost died. On his 12th birthday,  Chris found out his mother and father were getting a divorce, which led him down a path of depression and suicide ideation. Bullied his entire school age years - he spent a lot of time fighting for his identity and his place in the world.

Got engaged to Cori in 2003 and immediately after their engagement - Chris left for a year long tour in Iraq and shortly after returning home they got married. Unable to have children - they adopted 3 sweet kiddos (2 brothers and their sister) from Ethiopia.  In 2016 they were blessed with a little girl of their own. 

Chris now lives his life serving others - volunteering at a local Behavioral Health Center telling his story to youth and adults.  He gives them hope through His story of overcoming life's challenges and struggles. Chris is a true beacon of light!

Paul grew up on a farm in Sheldon Iowa and was fortunate enough to grow up in a christian family. His parents taught him and his siblings how to respect themselves so they could respect others in return. Shortly after obtaining his associates degree in business marketing he set off to Sioux Falls but was unsure of his next steps. Paul stumbled across a small rural garden center south of Sioux Falls and applied for a temporary position. Little did he know this temporary position would turn into his life's work.

After 40 years of owning and operating  Landscape Garden Center in Sioux Falls SD - Paul DeJong stepped down as an Owner once his health started declining - which was quickly diagnosed as Parkinson Disease in his late 50's.  

In Paul's late 20's, he was also in a life threatening car accident that left his body completely broken and Paul had permanent damage that caused chronic pain and a limp.
 
Then again in his 40's, Paul was bit by a brown recluse spider on vacation in Mexico which quickly turned into Necrotizing fasciitis - a flesh eating disease - that almost took his life for a second time. 

Even with these life threatening adversities - Paul has lived a life full of successes as a father of 3, husband, and business owner. With the time he has left here on earth - Paul plans to spread God's love through his words and actions of perseverance and hope. His positive attitude and 'kindest man I have ever met' legacy are undeniable. 

Paul's friends and family will forever be proud of the way their dad handled all kinds of adversity with a smile on his face - grateful for each and everyday God gives him.
