Evans Training Center is a safe place for Prodigal Son's to come home and be restored.

ETC serves men who come from a lifestyle of chemical addiction who can't yet thrive in outpatient (AA, NA, CR, office visits) or transitional style (halfway house) programs. But instead, require 24/7 supervision in a residential environment and full-time mentorship for an extended period of time.

ETC focuses on helping men to build meaningful relationships with Christ, themselves, and others as well as helping them build the character, integrity, skillsets, and spiritual and emotional wherewithal needed to thrive in post-program recovery.

Mike Malone is the Senior Program Director at FAVOR Upstate. FAVOR provides free addiction recovery services to individuals and family members suffering with substance use disorders.
Mike has a vast array of experience in various service industries and an educational background in communications and psychology. He has been an active member of the Greenville recovery community since 2009. Mike brings compassion, enthusiasm and an extensive amount of recovery knowledge to the position.
At FAVOR his responsibilities include: ensuring the delivery of quality programs at the center, individual recovery coaching, assistance with training and education, and coordination of volunteers. Mike is an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast and he will use these avenues to engage participants who struggle with reaching out for help.

Step 5: Confession with Jason Cochran

Today Ryan is joined by Jason Cochran, Clinical Director of Canterbury Counseling, to discuss the Fifth Step of the Twelve Steps; Confession.

Step 5 of the 12-Step Program is: “Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.”

On this episode Ryan and Jason discuss the importance and also the challenges to confession.

Jason graduated from Columbia International University in 2000 with a Bachelor or Arts in the Humanities. He earned a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary in 2011. He is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and a Board Certified Christian Counselor by the Board of Christian Professional and Pastoral Counselors. Finally, Jason is a State Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) issued by the State of South Carolina Board of Examiners for Counselors, Therapists & Psychoeducational Specialists. Jason’s interests and specialties are Children and Families: parenting, adolescents, fostering and adoption; Addiction, Sexual Abuse: children and adults who were abused as children; life-transitions, work-related issues, pre-marital and marital counseling. Jason was also a counselor at Miracle Hill before moving on to Canterbury Counseling.

Sarah is a graduate of Miracle Hill's Renewal Center. Renewal is Miracle Hill's women's recovery program. Before coming to Miracle Hill Ministries, Sarah had experienced homelessness due to her addition to drugs. With no place else to turn, Sarah entered Miracle Hill's program and found freedom through Christ.

On this episode, Sarah shares her experiences while working through recovery and how submitting to Christ as the Power greater than herself restored her mind and spirit to sanity, leading her to true recovery.

Today, Sarah is married to Bruce and together they have two children. Sarah works on Miracle Hill's stewardship team and continues to encourage others with her story.

Welcome to Season 4 of Miracles from the Hill Podcast: a survey of The Twelve Steps.

In this season, we will take a closer look at The Twelve Steps and how Miracle Hill Ministries incorporates this resource into our recovery programs.

When people think about "The Twelve Steps" they may associate this resource with Alcoholics Anonymous or another similar recovery group. While these steps have their history in AA, The Twelve Steps is a resource that can be broadened beyond just the scope of these types of meetings. Miracle Hill Ministries uses an adapted version of The Twelve Steps in our recovery programs. This adapted version of The Twelve Steps puts Jesus at the center of recovery, helping guests think through their story with Christ as the focal point.

Throughout this season, Ryan will sit down with various people on the podcast and talk through the steps in-depth. For listeners, this is a great resource to better understand the journey of Miracle Hill Ministry guests who are a part of our recovery programs as well as contemplating areas in our own lives that may need greater freedom and cleansing.

This episode is a conversation between Ryan and Brad which broadly discusses the nature of addiction. Brad is the director of Overcomer's, Miracle Hill's men's addiction-recovery facility to launch season 4.

The Trauma of Removal with David and Ryan

As the saying goes, "blood is thicker than water." So what happens when sibling groups enter the foster care system?

The reality is, many sibling groups become separated from each other when they are removed from their homes. This separation only adds to the trauma the children are experiencing. That's why Fostering Great Ideas facilitates a program called Sib-Link. The goal of Sib-Link is to reunite siblings with each other and help create pathways for relationship, even in the middle of a crisis.

Helping children and teens stay connected to their family of origins (when that connection is safe and permittable) can help reduce the negative impact of a very tumultuous situation.

Helping Teens in Foster Care with Kelly and Ryan

Kelly is Miracle Hill's educational advocate for teens in foster care with Miracle Hill. Kelly understands the vast landscape of resources available to teens and young adults in the Foster Care system. Her job is to help identify which resources would be helpful to these teens and guide them through the process of utilizing the resources.

For a teen and young adult that chooses to stay in Foster Care, DSS offers many resources including basic training (like budgeting), college tuition scholarships, and other avenues that help a teen transition to independent, successful living. However, it can be hard for a teenager to choose to stay within a system that feels binding to them; often, these teens can't wait to be "free."

Yet, the relationships that many of these teens are able to build with foster parents, case workers, and other social workers, can help create stability within their lives and encourage them to stay within the Foster Care system and tap into the plethora of resources that can help aid them as they enter adulthood.

How Schools Help Children Experiencing Homelessness with Irene and Ryan

Greenville County Public Schools defines homelessness as "a lack of permanent housing resulting from extreme poverty, or, in the case of unaccompanied youth, the lack of a safe and stable living environment."

Irene is the Homeless Education Liaison & McKinney-Vento Project Coordinator with Greenville County Schools. On this episode, she sits down with Ryan and discusses in-depth the resources provided for children experiencing homelessness in the school district, including strategies for identifying this population and offering resources to help these students be successful.

When a child or teen is experiencing homelessness, getting good grades and paying attention in class is not their first priority. However, school in general can be a great asset to these students because it can be a constant their life.

It is Irene's heart that students experiencing homelessness within the Greenville County School District are identified and cared for to the best of everyone's ability.

Yet, there are many barriers for these students to overcome.

Part 3 with Heather: "Grace, A Complicated Journey"

Heather and her husband said yes to God's tug on their hearts to foster. When they opened their home to a little baby girl named Daisy, they were overjoyed. Yet, Heather was keenly aware that there was a biological mother who lost her little girl on the other side of Daisy.

As Heather cared for Daisy, she supported the idea of Daisy and her mother, Gina, being reunified, but Gina couldn't shake her addiction, causing the reality of reunification to become less clear.

In the turmoil of court dates, visitations, and general ups and downs, Heather began to wonder if God would place Daisy in their home permanently.

Heather listened for God's voice and ultimately rested in His timing. She kept herself from trying to "get involved" in the decision.

Today, Heather testifies that God's way is best, and that He works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform...

Part 2 with Gina: "Grace, A Complicated Journey"

Gina struggled with alcohol abuse from an early age. Eventually, her life spiraled out of control and she began using hard drugs.

When she found out she was pregnant with her first child, Daisy, she had hope. But her pregnancy couldn't save her.

During Daisy's delivery, Gina tested positive for illegal substances, causing Daisy to enter SCDSS custody. Gina longed to be a good mother, but struggled to shake her addiction.

Shortly after losing Daisy, Gina was unexpectedly pregnant again. "This time," she thought, "I'm going to stay clean." However, once again, Gina couldn't shake the drugs.

When Gina gave birth a second time she again lost custody her daughter, Grace.

Gina was determined to follow through the process, get clean. and get her two children back. Yet, she lacked support.

But for Gina, support eventually came from an unlikely source...

Part 1 with Evelyn: "Grace: A Complicated Journey"

Evelyn has a big heart. When she heard that a little baby girl needed a home, she and her husband decided to take the leap of faith and open their doors.

When Grace was born she was in bad shape. Her mother, Gina, used drugs throughout her pregnancy, resulting in a lot of medical concerns for Grace.

How Does Trauma Affect Children? with Diane and Ryan

On this episode, Ryan sits down with Diane Turner, a trauma-informed Care-Coordinator at Miracle Hill Ministries.

Diane dives into the weeds of trauma and how children who experience a variety of traumas are thus impacted. There are many tools used by SCDSS, case workers, care coordinators, and other social workers to help define and recognize trauma. One example of these tools is the ACE test, which stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences test (click here to learn more).

The point of testing for and understanding trauma is not to assign negative labels to an individual, but to better understand what resources would be most pertinent for their healing process. The pairing and offering of resources to children in Foster Care is part of Diane's job and something she's very passionate about.

Trauma affects one's spiritual, physical, and mental health. Trauma often causes the brain to be stuck in "survival mode," which traditionally makes it difficult for a person to connect and trust with others and live a vibrant life.

Experiencing some level of trauma is a reality for any child who has lived in homelessness or is taken into the Foster Care system. However, there is always hope. Children are resilient, and when officered the right care, children are able to live happy, whole lives.

Children in Emergency Shelters with Samantha and Ryan

Although children in Foster Care are often though of as "experiencing homelessness" to some degree, there are also children who live in emergency shelters with a parent or guardian.

At Miracle Hill Ministries, we provide emergency shelter options for women with children in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Cherokee counties. Samantha Littlejohn oversees the women and children in Miracle Hill's Cherokee County Rescue mission, and she sits down with Ryan to share her perspective on some of the experiences of children in care at Miracle Hill.

What are some of the reasons a mom would enter emergency shelter with her child or children? Samantha shares that many women are fleeing abusive relationships, struggle with mental illness, lack parenting skills, and/or are fighting substance abuse. There are many contributing factors to why someone needs help and enters emergency shelter living.

At Miracle Hill Ministries, it is important that we offer the love and support of Christ to each of our guest, including any child in care. Samantha shares on this episode what that often looks like and how shelter living with children presents unique challenges for a caretaker and a child to overcome.

In the discussion of the experience of homelessness with children, it is important to understand the role of SCDSS. DSS offers many resources, in conjunction with Foster Care, that work towards reunification and stability within a family of origin, whenever possible.

SCDSS's Placement Services is often what people initially think of when they consider DSS. However, there are many other avenues through which the Department of Social Services offers assistance, including adult protection, prevention, child care services, and family support services.

The Heart of Foster Care with Brenda and Ryan

On this first episode of "Season 3: The Experience of Children and Homelessness," Ryan sits down with Miracle Hill’s VP of Children’s Ministries, Brenda Parks. Brenda’s career has touched children in foster care for many years. In her current role, Brenda supervises Miracle Hill’s Children's Ministry division, which includes the Foster Care Community in Pumpkintown.

Brenda shares the ups and downs of what she sees on a daily basis. On one hand, Miracle Hill is blessed to work with a multitude of wonderful foster parents who make daily sacrifices to care for the most vulnerable in our society. But on the other hand, there are not enough families for the children in foster care in South Carolina. For example, the need for individuals willing to open their homes to sibling groups or teens is great. Brenda shares that Miracle Hill team members have sadly needed to split up sibling groups simply because there is no one available to take them in.

At Miracle Hill Ministries, we are excited for the ways that God is working in the Upstate community to be the hands and feet of Christ to these children, but we are also burdened. We hope to see more people answering the call to foster care.

Why talk about Children and Homelessness for Season 3 of Miracles from the Hill Podcast?

Miracle Hill Ministries is South Carolina’s largest provider of homelessness services. When many people think about “homelessness,” they often think of the experience of an adult. However, many children also experience homelessness, either through the foster care system or because their guardians are not stably housed. A child who experiences any level of homelessness adds trauma to their life. How can someone recover from childhood trauma? What is the trajectory of these children without housing? How does Miracle Hill help children experience homelessness? What is foster care? And what does DSS say about the lack of foster homes?

If you are interested in any of the above questions, this season is for you.

On this introductory episode, Ryan is joined by Jacob, Miracle Hill’s Chief Development Officer to discuss why the topic of children experiencing homelessness is crucial for anyone who wants to understand the homelessness landscape more deeply.

A Radical Welcome with Jennifer and Ryan

Jennifer Fouse Sheorn is the Pastor and Director of Trinue Mercy Center, a church and ministry in the Greenville area that provides a radical welcome.

"Triune Mercy Center is a non-denominational church in Greenville, SC that ministers alongside those in need. [Their] mission is to share Christ’s love by meeting physical needs and providing life-changing opportunities for the disadvantaged" (Triune's website).

When a person is living on the streets, survival mode is what "drives the brain." Often, the first thing on that person's mind is not church attendance, or at the very least, it can be hard to focus on one's spiritual health when their physical health is suffering. At Triune Mercy Center, things like food, mental health counseling, medical and legal aid, and other resources are offered right alongside the opportunity to worship in a traditional church setting. Triune hopes that as hurting people receive care for their physical needs, they will also be willing to allow their spiritual condition to be changed by Jesus' love.

On this episode, Jennifer and Ryan's conversation ranges from Triune's church philosophy to dialogue on the biggest issues facing the homeless community in the Upstate.

Interacting with someone who is currently experiencing homelessness can feel awkard and messy. But, God doesn't call us to stay in the comfortable.

"Everyone Deserves an Address" with Lorain and Ryan

United Housing Connection believes that "everyone deserves an address."

On this episode, Ryan sits down with Chief Executive Officer at United Housing Connections, Lorain Crowl, to dive into the heart of this organization.

United Housing Connections is on a “mission to connect people at-risk for or currently experiencing homelessness with safe, sustainable and affordable homes. To that end, we build and manage affordable housing for low-income people and provide prevention and housing programs. Ultimately, we envision an Upstate SC where all people have the opportunity to live in a safe, sustainable and affordable home” (from United Housing Connections website).

Affordable housing is a major issue in the Upstate of South Carolina. Although each person’s story is complicated, many people who are or have experienced homelessness would attest to the fact that a lack of affordable housing contributed to their situation. As Ryan often says in regard to the problem of homelessness: “we need more exits.”

There are no easy solutions to the housing crisis. Lorain and Ryan discuss ideas and current programs that help those experiencing homelessness work towards stable and secure housing.

Jobs for Life with Ron and Ryan

"Uplifting humanity through the dignity of work:" that's the tagline for the Jobs for Life program.

For many men in Greenville Rescue Mission (GRM), the Jobs for Life program, under the leadership of Ron, has been an avenue of growth and a path towards stability. Although everyone's story is different, people who have experienced homelessness often lack a clear work ethic, which can lead to a vicious cycle of job-instability and poverty.

The Jobs for Life curriculum gives GRM guests the opportunity to sit down and contemplate what it means to be a "good employee," and how they can personally set reasonable, achievable goals for their own career path. This program also provides one-on-one mentorship relationships for each person in the program. These mentors are various people from the community who come alongside the Jobs for Life participants in companionship and help to further solidify an understanding of work.

On this episode, Ron and Ryan discuss in-depth the various aspects of Jobs for Life as well as why a program on the dignity of work is vital for the men at Greenville Rescue Mission.

The Power of Advocacy with Susan and Ryan

As the old adage goes, "it takes a village." In the Upstate of South Carolina, there are a variety of organizations and ministries working to provide aid, resources, and hope for people experiencing homelessness. The Greenville Homeless Alliance provides a platform for leaders of these organizations to come together. As GHA's website states: "[The Greenville Homeless Alliance] utilizes a common agenda, common progress measures, coordination of mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication and support of the partnership through a host organization to achieve a collective impact."

In this episode, Ryan sits down with Susan McLarty, Greenville Homeless Alliance Director. Together, they discuss more deeply the complications and issues of homelessness, the mission of Greenville Homeless Alliance, Miracle Hill's partnership with GHA, and the power of advocacy.

Understanding "Through Our Eyes" with Jason and Ryan

"A picture is worth a thousand words," as the old adage says.

Jason Williamson spearheads a project called "Through Our Eyes," and in this episode Ryan and Jason sit down to discuss this endeavor and reminds listeners that people--whether homeless, addicted, or otherwise--are not disposable.

The Through Our Eyes Project allows a person to become a photographer for a short period of time by giving them a disposable camera. The photographers come from a variety of backgrounds, and are often experiencing homelessness. In fact, several Miracle Hill Ministry guests have participated in this project.

The cameras are disposable, the people are not.

After the photographing period is over, the "photographers" work is then categorized by a panel of community judges. Finally, the work is displayed in a gallery. Visitors who view the art gallery are able to then vote through donations on which photo is their favorite.

The Through Our Eyes Project has three purposes:
1. Spiritual. Everyone deserves to be loved, including the photographers who volunteer to participate with the project.
2. Emotional. We want the photographers to feel the gratification that comes with being part of something bigger than they are.
3. Physical. We want communities to engage with different groups of people, learn how to love them and support organizations who serve them.

The mission of New Horizon Family Health Services is to provide quality, affordable, compassionate patient-centered health care to improve the health of the communities we serve (link).

People get sick. Regardless of a person's possessions, employment, social standing, or housing status, sometimes the body fails. New Horizon Family Health Services desires to help people, regardless of position, navigate an often complicated healthcare system to ensure access to healthcare.

Season 2: The Experience of Homelessness

We are very excited to be launching season 2 on Miracles from the Hill Podcast. This season focus on the topic of homelessness and will feature guests from many of Miracle Hill's valued partners.

Miracle Hill Ministries is South Carolina’s largest and most comprehensive provider of homeless services.
At our core, we exist to serve people experiencing homelessness—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We share the Good News of Jesus with them as they move toward independence, stability, and healthy relationships.

It is estimated that 582,462 individuals are experiencing homelessness in America (source). What is the definition of homelessness? Is there an answer to the crisis? Why does someone become homeless? What are the best practices when providing help to the chronically homeless?

These are all questions that we'll be discussing over the upcoming months as we take time to talk with a variety of men and women working to fight homelessness in the Upstate of South Carolina.

From Inmate to Prison Discipleship with Cary and Ryan

Cary Sanders is the Chief Executive Officer at JUMPSTART, a non-profit organization that "disciples current and former prisoners and assists with re-entry to society" (jumpstartvision.org). However, that's not where Cary's story began...

On this episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast, Cary shares in transparent detail about the life of misery and hopelessness he used to lead before he was changed on the inside out by Jesus.

For Cary, God met him in a high security prison cell.

Today, Cary holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from North Greenville University, he has authored a 40-week discipleship program used at 17 South Carolina prisons, and has developed a volunteer training program currently used within the prisons throughout the state.

Cary, along with JUMPSTART, is passionate about helping current and former prison inmates re-entry into society through addressing the spiritual needs, education, employment, healthcare, housing, and family relationship of these individuals.

JUMPSTART reports a 96% success rate.

There is hope for anyone, no matter their past or present.

The topic of sexual brokenness if often taboo, hidden, or simply undiscussed in the Church. Yet, pornography, affairs, and other forms of sexual perversion are prevalent in Christianity, wrecking many homes and lives.

Aaron grew up in a Christian home, and at a young age he made is own profession of faith. But in college, Aaron began to dabble in things he knew were wrong but found fun. Aaron's sin led him down a dark path of sexual perversion, leading him to eventually separate from his wife and children.

After a blunt conversation with his wife, Aaron new he had a decision to make: he could follow God's way or he could follow Aaron's way. Aaron chose repentance.

Today, Aaron is reconciled with his family, active in church, and strives to help other men struggling with sexual brokenness. On this episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast, Aaron shares his story along with practical tips for overcoming sexual addiction and sin that he found helpful in his life.

Suicide Loss, Grief, and Mental Illness with Dawn and Ryan

In this episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast, Dawn shares her incredibly real, raw, and hope-filled story of how she worked through the grief of losing her husband to suicide.

Dawn's mother struggled with debilitating depression after a severe car accident left her with brain damage. This incident changed Dawn's family dynamics drastically. She recalls stark contrast of weekdays and Sundays. Dawn's mom wouldn't get dressed or get out of bed during the week, but on Sundays, her mother would get dressed, put on her church outfit, and sit on the front-row pew to hear Dawn's father, the church pastor, preach his sermon.

Fast forward to Dawn's married years. She knew something was wrong. Her husband struggled with addiction and emotional highs and lows. During these years, Dawn wasn't able to find adequate support or help for their marriage or her own mental health.

After years of struggle, Dawn's husband took his life. Leaving Dawn and her two children reeling. But, Dawn's story doesn't end here. Through Jesus, time, and community, Dawn is now able to look back on her story and tell how God carried her and her family through an extremely dark valley of grief and loss.

Today, Dawn works for Miracle Hill Ministries, is actively involved in her church, and enjoys pouring into other people that hope that she received from God.

Neuroplasticity: Healing the Brain with Suzanne and Ryan

Suzanne is a child of God, wife, mom, grandma to 12, and an Educational Therapist who works at Pearl Learning Center. She partners with students of all ages who have "difficulties with thinking". This includes students with learning disabilities, brain injury, ADHD, etc. Suzanne is a longtime volunteer with Miracle Hill Ministries and has blessed many women in Miracle Hill's addiction/recovery facility, Renewal, with hope through her teachings on Neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is defined by oxford dictionary as the "ability of the brain to develop new neurons and/or new synapses in response to stimulation and learning." In other words, God has given the human brain amazing capacity to change and heal. You can imagine that, for someone who has spent much of their life struggling through dominating addiction, learning that the brain can heal from harmful patterns is extremely encouraging.

In this educational episode, Suzanne and Ryan walk through the basics of neuroplasticity and share practical tips on how you, no matter your experiences or trauma, can think better and foster healthy brain patterns that lead to the ability to make wise choices.

Sitting on the Board and Hiding Addiction with Joey and Ryan

Joey is a long time volunteer, former Miracle Hill Board member, and good friend of Miracle Hill Ministries. Joey is a certified financial planner and is on the Greenville Leadership Council for the South Carolina Christian Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors for the Spartanburg Community College Foundation and the Union County Economic Development Board. Joey was recognized by Gov. Nikki Haley as an Ambassador of Economic Development for South Carolina.

On this episode, Joey opens up and discusses in great transparency his struggle with alcohol. Joey believes this inability to manage stress coupled with his drive to please people helped to keep him in the grips of addiction for a long time. But Joey's story doesn't end in defeat. Today, Joey shares how he found freedom through Jesus, relationships, and honesty.

Parent Wounds, Group Homes, and Hope with Bob and Ryan

Bob's childhood was turbulent, to say the least. As a little child, Bob remembers stealing food from a neighbor's tree just to have something to eat. Eventually, Bob was placed in a group home, where he finished out high school.

During his time at the group home, Bob met the Father of the fatherless and found true belonging.

Eventually, God led Bob to serve in various roles at Miracle Hill Ministries. And one day, Bob found himself director of Miracle Hill's Boy's Shelter. Now, Bob's past was an ministry of understanding to struggling boys.

Even with a childhood full of trauma, Bob dedicated his life to helping children who were just like him: homeless. Bob's story is inspiring and shares hope that, no matter our past circumstances, God can brin healing that surpasses the imaginable.

Secrets: Hiding is a dark path with Roy and Ryan

Somehow, Roy managed to make good grades in college, play football, and keep his dirty secret hidden: drug addiction. Eventually though, the truth comes out. We can't hide forever.

Not having a father in his life caused Roy to wander and find friendship in the wrong crowds. When partying and abusing substances started threatening his life in real ways, Roy had a choice to make.

Roy's story, in a way, feels like a novel; with its twists and turns, highs and lows, it's truly a miracle that Roy is working in Greenville Rescue Mission, spending his time loving and caring for people experiencing homelessness while sharing the love he found in Christ Jesus.

A definition of the word "success" by Mariam Webster is a "favorable or desired outcome." So what is the favorable of desirable outcome for guests of Miracle Hill Ministries who are experiencing homelessness or addiction or both? Success is hard to define in the context of complex human beings.

In this episode, Jeremy and Ryan talk about the idea of success. Jeremy is the director of Miracle Hill's largest emergency shelter facility: Greenville Rescue Mission. We celebrate the stories of those who find healing and wholeness after walking out our doors. But how do we process the stories of individuals who walk out of our care and choose to continue in addiction or a homeless lifestyle? Or how do we think about the story of the person who relapses one time and dies from an overdose?

Venus was in grade school when desegregation took place in South Carolina. She remembers the feelings of being "less then" when she walked into her new classroom and met her new classmates. In college, tragedy and grief struck her family. Venus didn't care about anything anymore. The many unprocessed emotions sent her spiraling into substance abuse. She didn't know how to cope with all the pain. "But God..." Today, Venus is the director of Renewal Center, Miracle Hill's addiction-recovery program for women. The first part of this podcast explores Venus's story; the second segment focuses in on coping mechanisms, processing emotions, and how we all can check our lives for unhealthy patterns of addiction and abuse.
