In today's study through 2 Thessalonians chapter two, we'll clear up confusion about the rapture, the rise of the Antichrist, and the coming of the Lord at the end of the Tribulation.  

The Thessalonians believers were anxious, because false rumors had circulated that the day of the Lord had already come.  Paul assures them that the Day of the Lord wouldn't come until after the restrainer had been removed, the antichrist rises, the Abomination of desolation, and then...the Lord would return.

As we begin looking at the second Thessalonians letter, we'll see that Paul has a number of great commendations for the church, as well as a few corrections.  The Thessalonians believers had misunderstood Paul's teaching about the return of the Lord and supposed that it would come in their own day.  As a result of that, some of the believers had grown idle waiting for the Lord to come...any day now.  Paul wrote to get them going again, and to correct their misunderstandings about the Lord's return.

Today, we'll look at the literal kingdom of Christ upon the earth.  When He comes again, He will literally reign and rule upon the earth.  Satan will be bound for 1k years.  After that, Satan will be released, will gather the nations for the final battle against God, and the victory goes to Christ Jesus.  

During the Millennium, Satan's influence will be removed.  The unsaved dead of history remain in their graves until after the 1k years.  Then, the Great White Throne Judgment, a judgment for unbelievers of human history, will take place.  After that, Jesus will recreate the heavens and earth and we shall enter the eternal state.

Chapters 17 and 18 are best read as a unit.  In chapter 17, we learn of the fall of spiritual Babylon...a false religion that helps to aid the rise of the Antichrist and his kingdom in the last days.  It is a global, formal, murderous apostate religion that has a history of martyrdom, political alliance with Rome, and appears to be headquartered in Rome...the city of seven hills.  

However, at the midpoint of the Tribulation, Antichrist destroys that religion and institutes emperor worship.  It will be impossible to buy, sell, or to participate in economic or political live after the rise of Antichrist worship.  All power...political, economic, and religious will be vested in his kingdom. 

Chapter 18 describes the downfall of political and economic Babylon that will occur at the end of the Great Tribulation when Jesus destroys that kingdom in a single hour of a single day.   Antichrist destroys religion, then Jesus destroys Antichrist.

In this episode, we'll finish working through Revelation 14.  John's vision includes a picture of two reapings...one of the earth's harvest, and another reaping unto wrath.  One is a reaping by the Lord Jesus, while the other is a reaping by an unnamed angel.  

The first reaping is the separation of the sheep and goats at the second coming of Christ.  Only believers enter into the millennial kingdom.  The second reaping is the reaping of wrath over Antichrist at the battle of Armageddon.  

It is important to recognize that Revelation 14 is a table of contents for chapters 15-19, which will unpack in greater details the agenda items of God revealed in chapter 14.

John learns that two witnesses are sent by God, empowered with supernatural abilities, to witness to the gospel for the last 3.5 years of the Tribulation.  Not only can they slay any enemy with fire from their mouths, but they have the ability to stop the rain and to bring plagues upon the earth.  Every eye across the globe hears their testimony, sees the plagues, and celebrates their death before witnessing them come back to life in resurrection and ascend to the Father in Heaven.  This is such an interesting text that reminds us of God's desire that men would be saved even in the Great Tribulation.

In this episode we'll see the Lamb of God break the first six seals of the tribulation scroll.  These seal judgments are the outpouring of the wrath of the Lamb upon the world.  One of the reasons that I hold to a pre-tribulation rapture is because it is the view most consistent with the Gospel.  The wrath of the church has been paid at Calvary's cross.  

But we'll see that there will be new believers saved during the Tribulation, both from Israel and from the multitude of Gentile nations.

John continues his throne room vision of God, the 24 Elders, the Angles, and the living creatures.  When none of the created beings were worthy to open the scroll in the hand of the Father, John wept.  Nonetheless, his weeping turned to worship when the Lamb of God, the Messiah, was presented and was worthy to take the scroll from the Father.  The Lamb is Jesus, slain for the sins of the world, and worshipped by the court of Heaven.

John was on the island of Patmos on the the Lord's day when he received the vision of Revelation with specific instructions from Christ to write what he has seen and distribute it to seven churches in Asia.  

In chapter one we read a description of the glorified Christ, and also instructions to John to write the things that he has seen, the things that are, and the things which will soon take place after this.  This structure helps us to rightly divide the contents of Revelation.  

Chapter one is past for John...what he has seen when Christ instructs him to write.  Chapters two and three are present...seven literal churches that existed in John's day, and chapter four and following pertain to future things.  

Everything in Revelation that follows chapter four fits within Daniel's seventieth week, aka...the Tribulation.  The tribulation is seven literal years, and is referred to precisely in scripture by years, months, and even the number of its days.

In this episode, we'll look at the second part of chapter eleven and begin with the historical personage of Antiochus Epiphanes, who is a typological figure of the coming Antichrist of the last days.  The absolute purpose of the record of this Greek ruler in Daniel is to picture, in part, the qualities of the future last days Antichrist.  Antiochus is a "little version" of this coming world leader who will implement on a global scale many of the attacks against God seen in the days of the Seleucid Empire.

We'll take chapter 11 in two parts.  Part one is history written in advance.  Daniel is given history future in striking detail.  The Glorious Man revealed to Daniel the rise of Alexander the Great and his fall, plus the breaking of Greece into four kingdoms after Alexander.  Great attention is given to the kings of the South and the North as chapter 11 traces the dynasties of the Ptolemies and the Seleucids.  

The entire chapter brings us forward to the typology of Antiochus Epiphanes, who would be a type of tyrant that we expect to see in the coming antichrist of the last days.  Often the Bible uses historical events as typologies of things to come.  

As we complete chapter 11 and get into chapter 12, we'll see God develop this typology...but transfer the characteristics of historical Antiochus to a coming leader who will emerge from a different kingdom in the days ahead.

Daniel chapters 10-12 are intended to be taken as a unit.  Daniel ten is the prologue, Daniel 11 is the main body of prophetic content, and Daniel 12 is the epilogue.  

In chapter 10, we're introduced to an elderly Daniel who is nearing the conclusion of his life.  He receives a vision from the Glorious Man, most likely the pre-incarnate Messiah, who begins to tell him of things that will take place many days in the future, at the time of the end.  

These prophecies are specific, pertaining to Daniel's people...Judah and Jerusalem.  Always remember to make the distinction between Israel and the church.   Avoid the mistake of replacement theology which views the church as spiritual Israel.

Although there is not a tremendous unearthing of new prophecy in chapter 10, we do learn some important spiritual truths, and we'll lay sone groundwork for the final two chapters of Daniel which are of the highest prophetic importance.

Daniel nine is perhaps the most important chapter in the entire Bible regarding God's timing for all eschatological events.  Because of this, it's also one of the most contested passages by those whose view of last things is challenged by its teachings. 

In this episode we'll look briefly at Daniel's prayer of repentance and set the stage for the seventy weeks prophecy by talking about the ministry of King Cyrus and Jeremiah's prophecy to use him as a catalyst for rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem.  A series of returns would lead to the decree of Artaxerxes and the inauguration of the seventy weeks prophecy.  

Not only does this important passage point to the timing of Christ's triumphal entry, but also points to the crucifixion, the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, the rebuilding and regathering of Israel as a nation, and the covenant of the prince who is to come that inaugurates the tribulation.

Daniel reveals a second vision pertaining to the rise of the Medo/Persian and Greek kingdoms that would reign and rule upon the earth. 

Antiochus Epiphanes, who ruled as a part of the Greek empire when it was divided into four kingdoms following Alexander's death,  is presented to Daniel as a typology of the future Roman Antichrist who will rule the world in the latter days.  

Often in prophecy, there is a near and partial fulfillment that validates the far and future complete fulfillment.  Antiochus of Greece was a typological historical figure that points to the final Antichrist of a yet future Roman kingdom who shall rise upon the earth following the rapture of the church.  The rapture affords the climate for his rise to power, and advance of globalism.

Beginning in chapter seven, Daniel shares visions that he has received directly from God pertaining to the last days scenario.  Daniels vision in chapter seven of four beasts that arise from the sea has a similar interpretation to the vision that God gave to Nebuchadnezzar in chapter 2.  The primary difference is that Daniel's vision here in chapter seven includes teaching about the ten kingdoms of the last days and the little horn (Antichrist) who shall arise in the latter days.  Daniel's vision is clear that in the days of this little horn, the Lord shall return and establish. literal reign and rule upon the earth.  These things are all future...still to come!!!

In today's podcast, we'll see that Daniel has remained in a position of political leadership under the administration of Darius the Mede.  After a conspiracy plot was hatched by other leaders who resented Daniel's rise to power, Darius was manipulated to pass a decree that endangered the life of Daniel.  Daniel was cast alive into a den of hungry lions, but the Lord preserved Daniel by shutting the mouths of the Lions, rescued Daniel from the pit alive, and used Darius to execute justice/judgment on the wicked men of Persia.  

This is one of two parenthetical passages in the first half of Daniel that reminds us of God's provision in time of trouble, and of God's track record of delivering the righteous from tribulation.  There are implications in this pattern that will become more relevant as we get into the second half of Daniel.

God has promised the rise and fall of a specific sequence of nations in the prophecy to Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2.  First, the nation of Babylon would rule, but after them would come the Medes and Persians...two arms and a  chest of silver.  

In Daniel 5, Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom has passed through a somewhat crooked family tree to his grandson Belshazzar, who repeated the same prideful mistakes of rebellion against the Lord Most High.  While celebrating the Babylonian moon god festival with a drunken feast in the palace court, Cyrus the Persian led an army secretly into Babylon and conquered the city, district by district, in a single night, and without a battle.  Thus, the kingdom passed from the head of gold (Babylon) to the chest and arms of silver (Medo/Persia), per the vision of God to Nebuchadnezzar in chapter 2.  

The significance of chapter 5 in view of our own interest in Bible prophecy is to show that God was activating the word that he had given earlier with precision and with truth.  When the Lord gives a prophetic word, it is specific, precise, and literal.

Daniel 4 records the second vision that the Lord God gave to Nebuchadnezzar.  In this passage, we'll learn that no matter how great a person becomes, the Lord is mighty and Lord over all.  It is important for leaders to remain humble even when God uses them to accomplish great things.  

Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom was the head of gold, but what's interesting is that even though his kingdom would end, God is still investing in the life of Nebuchadnezzar.

Daniel three is one of two parenthetical chapters in the book of Daniel.  While there are no new revelations or visions that speak specifically to the latter days, chapter three teaches us several important lessons...

1. God is faithful to His children in trials.  
2. God's children should be faithful to God under fire. 
3. Nebuchadnezzar's worship demands are typological of the last day's Antichrist.

In chapter two, we'll learn about the first vision that Daniel interpreted for the Babylonian king, which details the rise of four historical kingdoms upon the earth.  This vision reveals God's future plans for the rise of four earthy kingdoms.  The last kingdom, the king of iron mixed with clay is of the utmost prophetic importance.  In chapter two, we begin to learn that this final kingdom, the Roman kingdom, would reign, and then dissolve into smaller kingdoms not intermingling with themselves.  

Later in Daniel, we'll see that this kingdom is the kingdom of the last days when Antichrist will reign and rule upon the earth, and the kingdom that leads into the Tribulation.  Finally, Daniel suggests in chapter 2 that in the days of this final kingdom, that Jesus would establish his own kingdom and break very other kingdom on the earth.

Zechariah is one of the books of minor prophecy that speaks specifically to events to come at the close of the tribulation.  Zechariah speaks to the second coming of the Lord at the close of the Tribulation, to a national conversion to Christianity at the last day in Israel, and to the establishing of the Lord's literal kingdom in Jerusalem.  In that day, all the nations of the earth will be under His administrative rule.

This week we'll continue our look at the Ezekiel prophecies.  The Lord showed Ezekiel that in the latter days, after the regathering of Israel into the land (1948), that the Lord would gather armies from the north to invade Israel for plunder.  Among these nations are Russia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, and several others who will form a military alliance to invade Israel.  

It would seem that depleted resources and shortages may have some impact on their desire to travel south and invade the Holy Land, but the ultimate motivation is the work of God to draw them into judgment.  As they come, the Lord will intervene and destroy these armies before they get there, and both Israel and the world will glory in His name.  

The Gog/Magog invasion is not the same as Armageddon.  As we finish the chapter, we'll talk about some striking differences between the two.

Today we'll look at two powerful chapters in Ezekiel, chapters 36-37.  God spoke through the prophet about a future day when He would gather Israel from all of the nations, establish them again in their own land, and unify them as one people.  In those days, the Lord would take a dead nation that had lost all hope and restore her miraculously into a nation again.  People would come from the four corners of the earth to rejoin their national homeland.  

Likewise, we'll see that in the midst of those days, God would establish a national Davidic leader who would be a forever king to them, would establish his Temple and Tabernacle in the midst of their holy city, and would pour out His Spirit among them.  These things are close, but haven't happened yet.  

Many people believe that the regathering of Israel is the budding of the fig tree from Luke 21 and Matthew 24, and that their regathering as a nation on May 15, 1948 was a prophetic time marker that identified the generation who would see the rapture!  Let's carefully look at the texts and be encouraged by the miracle of modern day Israel.

In this episode we'll look at an often overlooked and misunderstood concept in the New Testament that relates to the coming of Christ in a spiritual mystery, the Jewish Wedding Custom.  This is one of those cultural teachings that helps us to unlock the New Testament, and even the teachings in the New Testament about the return of Christ.  Remember, when we read the New Testament, we've go to see it through the lenses of the original customs and cultures.  

There are three parts of a Jewish Wedding Custom...

• The Covenant: A legally binding marriage is formed between a groom and a bride's father.
• The Consummation: At a future time set by the father, the groom will return to fetch his bride and take her to his house.  
• The Celebration: After the consummation, which is the physical union of the bride and groom in the house of the bride, a celebration follows of all who are involved together in the marriage to celebrate the union.  

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

This week we'll continue our look at Matthew 24 and discuss the rapture of the church.  Did you know that when discussing His coming with the disciples, that Jesus actually answers one question with two answers?  One coming of Christ, the rapture, is a sudden coming to rescue believers from the judgment of the Tribulation.  This coming is unexpected/sudden/without warning, takes believers out of the world while leaving behind the unbeliever for judgment, and occurs as a snatching away in the air.  

By contrast, His second coming to touch down upon the earth and to reign/rule over all of the earth takes place at the close of the Tribulation.  This is not an unexpected coming that catches anyone by surprise who reads the Bible.  Rather, this is a very calculated coming that occurs at a specific time, and which is preceded by many signs that no one will miss.  This coming is an invasion with the armies of heaven to defeat the armies of the earth, to rescue a remnant of Israel, and to establish his literal kingdom upon the earth.  

Listen as I take us through Matthew 24 and explain the differences between the Rapture and the Second coming in detail.

In this episode I'll continue an exposition through Matthew 24.  Last time we learned about the signs of the times...the general climate of the season preceding the end that are the beginning of sorrows/birth pangs.  

Let's continue to see Jesus' answers to the Disciple's questions in Matthew 24:3.  In this episode, we'll address the signs of the end of the age.  As Jesus answers their question, he jumps first to the mid point of the tribulation, and then finishes his overview of the end of the by taking them all the way through to the end of Daniel's 70th week.  

It's important to look for key words and phrases in Matthew 24 to discern whether Jesus is speaking about the "end" or about his "coming."

In this episode I'll take us through the first 14 verses of Matthew 24 as we learn about the general signs of the times that Jesus predicted as indicators of a last days climate.  We'll also learn about the structure of Matthew 24, which is vital to a proper interpretation of the chapter.  

What kinds of things should we be watching for as indicators that we are nearing the return of the Lord?  There are eight specific signs given to us by Christ.

1. The rise of false religions.
2. An increase in global conflicts. 
3. Unusual weather phenomenon.
4. The persecution of the saints.
5. Christianity becomes and offense.
6. The rise of false prophets in the church.
7. Lawlessness in abundance.
8. The growing cold of love in the culture. 

 Let's look together at these eight signs and answer the question...are we there yet?

In this episode I'll begin a discussion of the doctrine of imminence...meaning that Jesus may return at any time.  What's interesting  is that some of the texts that speak of Christ's return teach the doctrine of imminence, while others detail numerous signs that must occur before the Lord's return.  

In this we learn that God speaks of two returns.  The rapture is the Lord's coming in the air to snatch away His church prior to the Tribulation.  At the close of the Tribulation, Jesus will come to establish his reign and rule, and the saints will return with Him.  Thus, Jesus will remain on the earth and will rule from Jerusalem over the nations.

In our previous podcast we learned that there is a coming revitalization of the old Roman Empire, which will be led by a charismatic global leader best known to us as the Antichrist.  In this episode, we'll look at several scriptures to begin thinking about the Antichrist, what he will do, and what sort of characteristics could be used to describe him.  Specifically, we'll learn that...

• Antiochus Epiphanes is an Old Testament typology of the coming world leader.  
• The events of desecration in Antiochus' time were a foreshadowing of the behavior of the last days global Antichrist.

• His revelation comes after the rapture of the church although he may be prominent already in the world before his time. 
• The Antichrist is absolutely a future person, written about to the church at Thessalonica,  and presented as a future leader to exist at the time of the Lord's return. 
• The Antichrist is defeated at the second coming of Christ at the Battle of Armageddon.

Daniel 9 contains perhaps the most significant last days prophecy in the entire Bible...Daniel's Seventy Weeks prophecy.   What makes this prophecy so remarkable is that Daniel provides timing details that help us to understand the scope of the things that are to come.  We'll see the timing of the triumphal entry prophesied over 400 years in advance, as well as the forecast of the crucifixion of the Messiah.  Understanding these past events helps us to place ourselves on God's timeline.  

Currently, we are living in a time of God's gathering of the Gentile nations...the "Times of the Gentiles."  But soon enough, God will revisit his promises to Israel and the "Seventieth Week" shall begin.  The culmination of this week of years is the Hebrew people calling out to Jesus their Messiah, and the second coming of Christ.

The first half of the book of Daniel records the interpretation of dreams for various kings, while the latter half of Daniel records visions and dreams given directly to Daniel.  

In Daniel 7, God reveals the rise of future kingdoms to Daniel that reflects an exact pattern of history that God revealed first to Nebuchadnezzar in chapter 2.  

Whenever the Bible repeats things such as this, it makes the sure word of prophecy even more solid.  Because we find multiple accounts of the rise of earthly kingdoms, we can be assured that what we have seen in history brings clarity to prophecy future.  

Christians are awaiting the rise of a reconvened Roman state...which will probably not be called as such, but which will be a coming together of nations again in kingdom with one another, and led by a central Biblical figure that we commonly refer to as the Antichrist.  

Join me as we look at Daniel 7 and see the similarities and timing of this last days coming kingdom.

In this second episode, we'll see that God revealed a vision to Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylonian about the rise and fall of four historical kingdoms upon the earth.  Beginning with Babylon, the vision identifies four kingdoms that would rule the earth in sequence.  The final kingdom, which we know to be the Roman empire, was prophesied to divide into two parts (east and west), and after that to dissolve into a number of independent nations.  In the last days, the kingdom will come together again, will be led by a charismatic global leader that Daniel identifies as "the little horn" and will be crushed by the Messiah at His second coming.  

This passage reminds us to be on the lookout for a reunification of the remnants of Rome in the last days...possibly called by a different name, but in essence, Rome 2.0.
