Both teams had a particularly "easy" path to the NBA Finals nevertheless they were the best two teams in the NBA Bubble Post-season with both having a 12-3 record.

The coincidence of this series is quite delicious and will own the intrigue and conversation until the ball goes up Wednesday in Game 1. LeBron James will be playing against the team he helped win a pair of championships. This scenario will get heavy airplay in the build-up, as it should; LeBron was a solid favorite to return to the championship round once the Lakers got Anthony Davis, while the Heat make for a surprise guest. The Lakers bring a pair of All-NBA first-team members while Miami hasn’t had anyone on that level since

40.7 -- The Lakers have averaged 40.7 points per game in the restricted area in the playoffs. That's down from a league-high 44.1 in the regular season, but still 7.5 more than any other team has averaged in the postseason.

By wide margins, the Lakers rank first in both field goal percentage in the restricted area (70.9%) and the percentage of their shots that have come in the restricted area (34%). LeBron James is responsible for almost half (48%) of their 610 restricted area points via his own buckets (87) and assists (59).

The Lakers have shot better from outside the paint in the playoffs (37.7%, effective field goal percentage of 50.4%) than they did in the regular season (35.5%, 47.7%). But protecting the rim remains extra critical in regard to slowing down the offense that ranked No. 1 in each of the last two rounds (114.4 points scored per 100 possessions in the conference semis, 117.8 per 100 in the conference finals).

That's why we may see a lot more 2-3 zone from the Heat in The Finals. The Lakers scored 39 points on 35 possessions against Miami's zone in the regular season and offer a different look than Boston with their two-big lineups. Though the Celtics got a lot more comfortable against the zone late in the last round, the Heat stuck with it, and it was critical in their fourth-quarter comeback in Game 6.

Most importantly, while open jumpers can be found against it with proper execution, the zone keeps Bam Adebayo near the basket a lot more than the Heat's man-to-man defense. Against this particular opponent, allowing open jumpers is far more preferable than allowing shots at the rim.

It was impossible to predict what would happen during the season restart after 4 1/2 months off. But even expecting the unexpected, we have to be surprised by the performances of some teams in Orlando.

The title favorites have seemingly had a tough time adjusting. The Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers are a combined 7-10. The Lakers have had the worst offense in the restart, and the Bucks ranking 11th defensively over the last 11 days may be more shocking than that. Both Milwaukee and the Clippers lost to the Brooklyn Nets last week.

The Phoenix Suns probably shouldn't have been invited to the restart. But they were, they have their first five-game winning streak in 5 1/2 years, and they're still very much alive in the chase for eighth and ninth place in the Western Conference. The San Antonio Spurs went to Orlando to develop their young players and they've found themselves in the middle of that same chase.

Two playoff series in the East are set. The No. 1 seed Bucks will face the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic, while the No. 2 seed and defending-champion Toronto Raptors will face Brooklyn, the 7 seed. We also know that the Boston Celtics are the No. 3 seed in the East, while the Lakers are No. 1 in the West.

Everything else will be determined in the next seven days, with the Western Conference play-in series taking place on Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.

With the top teams all stumbling, there's no obvious No. 1 in this week's rankings. Fortunately, this isn't college football or basketball, and the rankings don't really matter.

You sympathize with Jordan. You dislike him. You admire him. He is, to use the cop-out of all cop-out clichés, a complicated man. The Last Dance was produced because Jordan approved the use of exclusive footage, and though most filmmakers try to avoid it, documentaries always—sometimes explicitly, sometimes subtly—end up taking sides.

But our attention quickly turns to Jordan and the Bulls winning another title in ’96. We remember that Jordan is the ultimate champion, despite the outbursts, and one sentiment sticks more than the other. This is how it goes with problematic athletes. Greatness overshadows nastiness. The Last Dance conveys the height of both with Jordan.

No one ever brings up how exhausting it was to be Michael Jordan. It doesn’t fit the narrative. He could outshoot you, outhustle you, melt your defense, and stop you on the other end. He was a two-way player who gave it his all, and his all, of all the alls, trumped everyone else’s. His reputation isn’t all roses and rings. Jordan was—is?—kind of an asshole. 

That much is known, even championed. He gambles. A lot. Maybe too much. Definitely in the millions, but that’s not my money nor my card game. He broke many hearts when he said “Republicans buy sneakers, too.” Those actions suggest he’s inconsiderate, destructive, or self-centered. But none of them indicate exhaustion. Exhaustion is something else. Exhaustion is not a character flaw; it’s a sign of weakness. And there’s no mention of weakness in the Michael Jordan story.

But Jordan was tired.

At the end of the sixth episode, MJ is shown in the car with his friend, NBC broadcaster Ahmad Rashad. It’s April 1998, one week before the playoffs are about to begin, and the discussion around whether Jordan will really leave the game (again) is all anyone can talk about. Jordan drives out of his estate as iron gates with the number “23” on each side split open to let the two through. “I want to leave two years before my skills tell me I can’t play this game,” Jordan tells Rashad. “I don’t want to miss my time to go.”

Sunday’s episodes show the Bulls star’s frustration and fatigue, along with a handful of other iconic Jordan basketball stories—the kind that do fit in to his legend.

Episodes 07 and Episode 08 debut next Sunday.

The focus in the latest two episodes were about Phil Jackson, Dennis Rodman, and how they came together in order to facilitate the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls championship run.

Before Rodman and Jordan shared a court, they were opponents: Rodman was a member of the Detroit Pistons, the hard playing bad boys who kept the Bulls from advancing to the NBA finals for several years. 

Episodes three and four of “The Last Dance” focused heavily on the rivalry between the Bulls and the Pistons, flashing way back to the days before Jordan won his first title. That rivalry between the Bulls and Pistons hasn’t cooled over the decades. 

Jordan began weight training after that 1990 loss, building up his body to better survive the scrum that he knew was going to come in the postseason when the two teams would meet again. For the 1990-91 season, things were different. The Bulls took down Detroit in four straight games, sweeping their longtime nemesis. In that final game, with time still left on the clock, most of the Detroit stars simply walked off the court, not shaking hands with Jordan and his Bulls.

Detroit star Isiah Thomas tried to explain the behavior in the documentary, saying that’s how things were done in those days. Jordan is asked to watch Thomas explain himself—but he remains visibly upset by the move.

“You can show me anything you want,” he says. “There’s no way you can’t convince me he wasn’t an asshole.”

The fire still burns strong, nearly 29 years later.

The show ends with Jordan’s first title, won against Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers. The clips of Jordan in his prime are amazing, stunning, a reminder of how great this man was when he was king of the court. 

Episodes 5 and 6 debut next Sunday.

Out of a swirling mess of personnel moves, family tragedies, and international showcases, Hehir and a team of editors — led by Chad Beck, Devin Concannon, Abhay Sofsky, and Ben Sozanski — manage to craft a smooth, coherent pair of forward-moving tracks. “The Last Dance” shows how, by the fall of 1997, the Bulls had already cemented themselves as basketball royalty, amassing a trophy case filled with championships and individual accolades. The promise of one more ring takes on a mythic quality nonetheless. Even if some flashbacks do leave the Last Dance season’s action at a tantalizing crossroads, there’s never a sense of whiplash as the narrative seesaws across the years.

Regardless of what criteria we use Giannis is the winner by a mile.

Sometimes in the NBA award landscape, there is simply no need for debate. When one preeminent superstar soars above his contemporaries in such a convincing manner, those covering the league aren’t required to spend March and April fabricating a close battle.

Looking back to 2016, the only argument worth having was determining second-place. Stephen Curry completed an unprecedented season, winning 89.9% of the games he appeared in (71-8) while averaging 30 points and joining the 50-40-90 club. It led to the first unanimous decision. This was after Curry already breezed through the 2014-15 season, capturing his first MVP in another blowout vote.

Overall, the outside perception of a close race hasn’t mattered in the end. There is usually one candidate that separates himself, whether that’s in January or during a late-season push.

Since the voting process is on a points-based system, with fewer points awarded to those who finish lower on the five-player ballot, the results rarely indicate a close competition. Over the last six seasons, the average proportion of first-place votes landed by the MVP winner has been 84.3%, with the lowest being Westbrook’s 2017 victory – which was still a meaningful margin. The average gap in total points between first and second place has been 301, with the smallest being the 2017 race (135).

Whether it’s because of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s location in a small-market, LeBron’s longevity, or the slightly stronger Western Conference, this strange idea of the 2020 MVP being a “tough choice” has surfaced and I find it laughable.

Like I said in the initial statement; however you want to view this, Giannis is the runaway winner BUT...

After another fascinating weekend of NFL action ... Kyle Shanahan is a genius. The Vikings never had a chance. The best team from the regular season has abruptly entered its offseason. And Russell Wilson put on a show but couldn't get a win, Aaron Rodgers is still a BAAAADDD MANNNN.

You can't make this stuff up. Or -- considering it's Bill O'Brien, after all -- maybe you can. At 21-0, I understood the field goal to make it 24-0, even if I personally would've had Deshaun Watson go for the jugular on fourth-and-1. O'Brien's safe decision at least made some sense, whether you agreed with it or not. But running a fake punt on fourth-and-4 at your own 31-yard line while leading 24-7? That's indefensible, clueless, season/soul-crushing. Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of thing we've become accustomed to seeing from the Texans' head coach.

O'Brien's in-game coaching is consistently mind-numbing, but that outrageous fake punt attempt stood out as one of his worst moves yet. It changed everything, leading to the aforementioned onslaught by Mahomes and Co. It was simply brutal.

Over the course of two days, the N.F.L. saw its playoff field upended, with the No. 3 seed in both conferences being sent home by the No. 6 seeds, while each game was decided by a single score. It was a wild-card weekend that delivered on its name, and it set up a divisional round for next weekend that looks far different than most people predicted.

The 32 things I learned from wild-card weekend of the 2019 NFL playoffs:

1.The NFL's 100th season rolled on in style with a compelling quartet of games kicking off the postseason. But despite two overtime thrillers, the apparent demise of a dynasty and a shocking upset in New Orleans ... just a reminder — the last team to reach (and win) the Super Bowl after playing in the wild-card round was the 2012 Baltimore Ravens.

Over the course of two days, the N.F.L. saw its playoff field upended, with the No. 3 seed in both conferences being sent home by the No. 6 seeds, while each game was decided by a single score. It was a wild-card weekend that delivered on its name, and it set up a divisional round for next weekend that looks far different than most people predicted.

The 32 things I learned from wild-card weekend of the 2019 NFL playoffs:

1.The NFL's 100th season rolled on in style with a compelling quartet of games kicking off the postseason. But despite two overtime thrillers, the apparent demise of a dynasty and a shocking upset in New Orleans ... just a reminder — the last team to reach (and win) the Super Bowl after playing in the wild-card round was the 2012 Baltimore Ravens.

It is hard to go against Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the two best quarterbacks to ever take a snap. Brady is part of a dynasty that we will never see again in any sport. The Patriots have won six Super Bowls with Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. Montana is highly regarded as the best Super Bowl performer ever. He has a record of 4-0 in Super Bowls and holds records for the highest passer rating (127.8) and most pass attempts without an interception (122). Montana was also the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl MVP award three times.

From there, Manning is a safe pick for the No. 3 spot on the list. Manning held the passing touchdowns and yards record until Brees overtook him. He added a second Super Bowl ring in his final season to go along with five MVP awards. Manning is considered the best regular-season quarterback ever as he was a Pro Bowl player 14 times and named a First-Team All-Pro member seven times.

After the top three, the list gets a little tricky. Dan Marino was one of the best passers ever but he was never able to capture a Super Bowl victory. Marino played in a different era and tore it up when throwing the football was much more difficult than it is today. It is unfair to criticize players based on their era because nothing is guaranteed. We do not know for sure how Brady or Brees would have fared in the 1980s. Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr were ahead of their time, which earns them great respect. Then there is John Elway who was one of the best prospects coming out of college ever and backed it up with two championships.

When rounding out the top five, Brees has to be in there. After Brady, Montana, and Manning, there is no wrong answer. Elway could be put at No. 4 but it is hard to put Marino above Brees without a championship. Let’s not forget that Brees is still playing and has a chance to add another Super Bowl at some point. Because of all this, Brees will go down as a top-five quarterback of all-time.

NFL Research offers the best nuggets from each week of games in the NFL. Here are the most eye-popping statistical accomplishments of Week 12.

1) Frank Gore had 65 rushing yards in Sunday's win over the Broncos, bringing him to 15,289 career rushing yards. He passed Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (15,269) to move into third all-time in rush yards. Next up is Hall of Famer Walter Payton (16,726).

2) Michael Thomas joined Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison (2002) as the only players with at least 100 receptions in their team's first 11 games of a season in the Super Bowl era. Thomas' 10 receptions in the Saints' win over the Panthers brought him to 104 receptions this season.

3) With 50 receiving yards in the Buccaneers' win over the Falcons, Mike Evans topped 1,000 receiving yards this season (1,043). He joined Hall of Famer Randy Moss as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of their first six seasons.

4) The Patriots have at least 10 wins for the 17th straight season (2003-2019), the most consecutive 10-win seasons in NFL history. The Patriots' win over the Cowboys helped them break a tie with the 49ers (1983-1998).

5) Russell Wilson is the only quarterback in NFL history who has led his team to a winning season in each of his first eight seasons (2012-2019). The Seahawks are 9-2 after Sunday's win over the Eagles.

6) Ryan Tannehill's passer rating as starting quarterback (114.9) ranks first among 34 quarterbacks with at least five starts in 2019 (Kirk Cousins is second with a 114.8 passer rating). Tannehill's passer rating is 23.2 points higher than Marcus Mariota's (91.7) passer rating this season.

Lest you think Jackson would deprive fans of a rushing highlight, he threw in an electrifying 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter in which he spun and sliced his way straight through a stream of Bengals defenders on his way to the end zone.

Injuries derailing the season of a team or individual is nothing new. So far this season, it's been hand injuries - those of Stephen Curry, Kyle Lowry and Gordon Hayward - that have been the most significant, though the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics should be able to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference more than the Golden State Warriors have been able to do in the West.

What's new is the 25-game suspensions - those of Wilson Chandler and especially DeAndre Ayton and John Collins - that have seemingly come out of nowhere to take a player away for nearly a third of the season. This should have been a big year of development for both Ayton and Collins, and maybe it still could be. But losing 25 games to an off-the-floor mistake is a significant setback for two of the league's most promising young big men.

Dion Waiters' 10-game team suspension is another story, not that significant in regard to the standings, but still a setback for a guy who has played just 120 games in his three-plus seasons in Miami.

The show became more important than the game, to the point where the very superstars that created the social media frenzy supposedly powering interest in the league balked when interest in their futures inevitably overshadowed their actual work product. It was uncomfortable watching Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and many others come to the same realization Truman Burbank did when he realized his entire life was being broadcasted to billions of consumers and he had little choice but to play along.

That better not happen again this year. A whirlwind free agency left the title chase wide open and created an on-court product that even the most inept salesperson should have no trouble promoting. If the NBA can’t find a way to make actual basketball compelling to the masses this year, we have a serious problem. There’s no superstar free agent drama on the horizon to distract us, nor is there any dominant-yet-stale superteam there to turn the regular season into something between a complete waste of time and a weighty existential dilemma. This season should be all about the basketball, and that’s ultimately why we devote so much of our time to following this silly league.

In that spirit, I’ve crafted 20 burning basketball questions that will decide the league’s trajectory this season. You won’t see anything about trade targets on this list, and this is also a Giannis Antetokunmpo speculation-free zone. Instead, these are 20 questions that directly pertain to what happens on the actual basketball court. I can’t wait to find out the answers.

Morey's tweet was met with considerable backlash from Chinese authorities, while several different parties, including NBA commissioner Adam Silver, have weighed in on the issue. The latest to add his voice to the conversation is none other than LeBron James. The timeline of events has been lengthy. Below is a rundown of how we got from Morey's tweet to the current situation between China and the NBA along with the latest on this constantly evolving situation.

Then this mess with the NFL; We are being reminded on Every Given Sunday, and most recently on Any Given Monday night, that someone needs to throw the flag on officiating in the NFL before the public trust is destroyed.

No one, least of all the zebras, seems to know what pass interference is anymore, and we watched the Lions get robbed in Green Bay because the men in stripes twice called hands to the face penalties against DE Trey Flowers when a national television audience could see, with or without replay, how blatantly wrong they were. And there were other calls that screwed the Lions.

To err is human, but never have NFL officials appeared this human.

Advances in technology over the years have upped the urgency to get the calls right, yet coach’s pass interference challenges are ignored even when the call begs to be overturned. Clear and obvious visual evidence has apparently not been clear and obvious to the officials. Same as the Cleveland Browns. The theme this week is all about being cautious and WHY IT MATTERS THAT sports America does not care about pretenders.

Don't claim to be one thing and then your actions say another. The numbers will sniff you out but here is the summary:

Packers 4-1, first place in the NFC North. Cowboys 3-2, saddled with a two-game losing streak, tied for first in the NFC East with Philadelphia, and just one game ahead of the Giants.

This the result of insisting on shooting themselves in the foot, too, beginning last Sunday in New Orleans, losing two fumbles while crossing the 50-yard line, settling for a field goal after sitting first-and-10 at the New Orleans’ 11-yard line thanks in part to Dak Prescott missing a throw to an open Randall Cobb in the end zone and then Dak missing a third-down throw to Cobb while on the move. And that doesn’t even account for Brett Maher missing on a 55-yard field-goal attempt.

Oh, not to mention rushing for just 45 yards.

Result: Two-point loss, 12-10, on the road.

Now this, turning the ball over another three times, ruining what could very well have been a celebration of finally beating the Packers at home for the first time since 2007, the Cowboys now oh for their last four tries, and stretching this dry spell against the Packers over these past two decades, losing eight of the last nine meetings.

Browns @ 49ers (by the numbers)

185 - 49ers rushing yards in the first half, 83 of which came on San Francisco’s first offensive play of the game. The Browns allowed just 173 the entire game the previous week against the Ravens, who came into the game leading the league in rushing.

6.9 - Led by Matt Breida (114) and Tevin Coleman (97), the 49ers averaged 6.9 yards per rush, finishing with 275 yards on 40 attempts.

180 - One week after posting 530 yards against the Ravens, the Browns mustered just 180 on Monday, good for an average of 3.9 yards per play.

21 - Monday’s game marked the first time Cleveland was held without a touchdown since the team’s Week 16 loss to Chicago on Dec. 24, 2017 -- a 21-game stretch.

1 - The Browns had just one first down during the entire second half. The 49ers possessed the ball for 23:54 of the final 30 minutes.

8 - Under duress all night, Baker Mayfield officially took eight hits, four of which were counted as sacks.

4 - Turnovers committed by the Browns, their most of the season. Cleveland fumbled twice and Mayfield was intercepted twice -- including once on the goal line after a potential touchdown was bobbled by Antonio Callaway.

8 - Cleveland’s lone points came on Austin Seibert’s 30-yard field goal, his eighth make on as many tries this season.

  • Dak Prescott had a terrific output in this game. He misfired on just seven attempts, going 25-of-32 for a ridiculous 405 yards and four touchdowns. None of these numbers were illegitimate, as he shredded the Giants with tremendous precision. One of his best throws was a great fade to Michael Gallup down the sideline. Another was a beautiful rainbow fade to Amari Cooper, who easily beat first-round cornerback DeAndre Baker off the line of scrimmage. But that leads me to my main take-away, which is that it's difficult to trust what we saw in this game. The Giants, now without Olivier Vernon and Landon Collins, might have the worst defense in the NFL. They're sorely lacking at every position and each level of their stop unit. I have a feeling that almost every quarterback who battles them this year will be able to perform on an All-Pro level.
  • The Patriots have owned the Steelers over the years, but it's never been like this. The Steelers are often competitive, but they weren't anywhere close to New England in this latest version of their rivalry. The Patriots dominated, which is scary, considering that they didn't even have Antonio Brown available yet.
  • I didn't think the Browns would be as good as people thought they'd be because of high expectations and a questionable offensive line, but wow. I did not expect a 30-point loss to Tennessee. A breakout year was expected for the Browns, but they killed themselves with 18 penalties for 182 lost yards and three Baker Mayfield interceptions. Tennessee capitalized on the mistakes, and new Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith called a great game using Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown and Delanie Walker to put points on the board.

With just a day to go until the start of the 2019 NFL season, it's time to make some predictions, and hopefully, you love reading predictions, because there's going to be a lot of them coming out between now and the kickoff of the NFL's 100th season on Thursday. 

Of course, none of those predictions will be better than mine, so the good news for you is that you're already in the right place.

    Jay Harris  joined ESPN in February 2003 as a SportsCenter anchor, and in February, 2016, he was named as one of the anchor for the new 7 a.m. SportsCenter:AM program.

    Harris came to ESPN from WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh, Pa. where he was a news anchor/reporter.

    Harris has more than 25 years of experience in television and radio news, including morning news anchor at WAMO-FM and national news at American Urban Radio Networks, both in Pittsburgh, and at WOWI-FM in Norfolk, Va.  His work outside of sports included the trapped coal miners near Pittsburgh, and, while in Virginia, the fatal USS Iowa battleship explosion.

    A native of Norfolk, Va., Harris was graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication in 1987.  In 2003 he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University.  In 2004, he was the keynote speaker for Old Dominion’s 100th commencement ceremony.

    Among his other honors, Harris was part of SportsCenter’s Sports Emmy-winning efforts in 2004 and 2005, and a recipient of the Silver World Medal from the New York Festival Awards, Robert L. Vann Award from the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation, and an EXCEL Award from the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals.
