UNCLE TOMS

When Harriett Beecher Stowe penned the classic novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1851, she had no idea who here hero, Tom, would become one of the most hurtful epithet of any short of the N word. The term has changed the concept of the slave who risked his life to protect two enslaved women who had fled their owners.

Mike and Steve look at how the term morphed into a derisive from the pages of the storied novel.

The term is now used to describe a black person who is willing to purposely embrace a subservient status to the dominant white class. These people, usually men, but not always, are willing to play this role even at the expense of themselves and others like them. Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of the sycophantic Steven in the motion picture Django has emerged as the NEW prototype for the Uncle Tom of pre-Civil War America.  But they still exist today. Some proudly.

BLACK REPUBLICANS

Since the mid 1960’s the Democratic Party has been the “party of choice” for the majority. Those who are bold enough and/or free thinking enough to align with the Republican Party are seen as traitorous or naïve when it comes to the realties or race and class. Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Steve examine the Black Republicans in the United States today. Who are they? What attracts them to a party that has apparently not been interested in people, but in money and corporations. Why do they embrace the likes of Donald Trump and the Koch brothers? Why was Colin Powell seen as a “different” type Black Republican?

 We all think what was going on in our heyday remains the coolest thing on the planet.  Football is no exception. Through the 70’s and 80’s, the NFL under Commissioner Pete Roselle, moved baseball aside and crowned itself as AMERICA’S GAME! Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Steve exchange thoughts on each of their lists of the top NFL running backs of the past 50 years. 

Both lists feature all-time NFL Hall of Famers such as Earl Campbell and the quiet and elusive Barry Sanders.  Nothing heavy in this episode, just a fun talking football and stats.

Whether it's Big Ma, Nana, Pop Pop or Grandad, we all know about grandparents. They are both parents and in-laws, and the two roles can get blurred and even contentious.
Yet as our society changes, the role of grandparents changes. Are they necessary? Not necessary? A bother or a godsend?

Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Steve take a turn at discussing grandparents and grandparenting. Both guys are loving granddads themselves, but have different relationships with their grandkids.

Just when you think you know all about Black History, The Brothers have some new info for you to consider. Little Brother Steve takes us a  trip that starts with the first child born in the US  when it was still one of the British colonies to the first black owner of a slave. What? That’s right.

Sundown towns, also known as sunset towns, gray towns, or sundowner towns, are all-white municipalities or neighborhoods in the United States that practice a form of racial segregation by excluding non-whites via some combination of discriminatory local laws, intimidation or violence. The term came from signs posted that "colored people" had to leave town by sundown. Entire sundown counties and sundown suburbs.
Although it would seem that the abundance of these towns would be in the small towns of the South, Sundown towns exist in every state in the Union to this day. They remain so through custom, intimidation, reputation and folk lore.
The Green Book written and published by postal worker Victor Hugo Green in 1936. Among its pages were listed hotels, restaurants, and gas stations were blacks could get basic services.

Pastor and Youth Minister Dr. Denise Gilmore joins the brothers on the topic of Women Empowerment. Dr. Gilmore, a Doctor of Divinity, is  a graduate of the Interdenominational Theological center, and the Morehouse Theological Center. As head of the Developing Not Hauling Ministries, she is a major spokesperson around Midwest churches, speaking on how women such as the former first lady, Michele Obama, Condoleeza Rice and, even her own mother represent women leaders in her life.
Brothers Steve and Mike keep it real with questions and queries on the topic.

Have you ever carried an ice cream cone in your back pocket? Entered a bar while already drunk? Maybe you had an occasion to keep a donkey in a bath tub. While each of these are obviously crazy situations, they were once on the books in some of the state in the US.

Grief practitioner Karen Austin joins Mike and Steve to talk about a universal topic - grief and mourning.  Although associated with death of a loved one, grief can occur around a number of other situations such as loss of a job, divorce or the loss of ones youth. Austin who speaks nationally, takes us through her own life, and how grief can work on our psyche sometimes without our awareness or permission
Along the way she introduces mourning, the action or actions taken often to help relief the feeling of grief. Mourning is a more open action that has traditions in almost every culture on the planet.
Steve and Mike also share some of their bouts with different types of grief.

The quote "spare the rod, spoil the child" was the motto of the people who raised me and my brother  Was it effective? In Steve and Mike's family, none of us are in prison, we all work  and do the right thing, so I would say yes.  But our natural make up as a human is what steers Steve and Mike  away from crime, violence and law-breaking tendencies. 

Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Steve take  a look at the places where corporal punishment in schools is still practiced, and they discuss the real impact of hitting your child or having your child hit by a teacher a school administrator. Is it effective? Is it legal in your state?

From the Roaring Twenties till the start of the Second World War, Amos n Andy ruled the radio world. Created by two white actors from the South named Freeman Godsen and Charles Correll, Amos n Andy was the story of three black Chicagoans who made there way through life by hustling,  lying, and avoiding anything having to do with work. It was filled with stereotypes of black Americans that prevailed at the time. It was on the radio every night for nearly 3900 episodes. A genuine America media hit. A failed movie entitled Check n Double  Check, featuring the two radio actors in black-face, led to conversations about the new medium - television. A cast of experienced black actors took up the roles in the late 1950s on CBS, However, due to protests led by the NCCAP and major churches, it was taken off the air for good, putting actors out of work, and wiping the television screens clean of any black programming or programming featuring black artist until 1967  Was it too much?

Steve and Mike talk about the courage showed by young Cassidy Hutchinson, as she clearly and honestly gave her testimony to the January 6 hearings committee. Her courage prompted others to come forward and testify. She refused to endorse her old boss.
A young woman who, like other regular Americans, showed true patriotism.

WHY did a young man in Texas buy 3000 rounds of ammunition, amounting to thousands of dollars?And then go use those bullets to kill children and their teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas?

• Afro Boomer Brothers Mike  and Steve weigh in on the story of Casey White and his failed escape from prison, aided by female corrections officer Vicky White.   Casey White, a convicted murderer, is now in custody after being captured by the Indiana State Police. He now has the charge of first degree prison escape added to his sentence for murder. Vicky White, just days short of retirement took her life at the scene of the  capture. Love is at the center of all of this. People will do anything for love. 
• But this also points to the power that men continue to have over the lives of women.  This manifests itself with the overturn of Roe v Wade. Where a predominately male Supreme Court under pressure of politicians just decided how women would handle their reproductive choices.
