Episode 200: Queens Has a New King: St. John's Adds Elite EuroLeague Point Guard Quinn Ellis

The off-season is here and the St. John's Red Storm have made their first major addition. After a season where the point guard question was asked every day, Rick Pitino and his staff have addressed it right out of the gates. Quinn Ellis has committed to St. John's, one of the best point guards overseas is headed to Queens. The 6'5 floor general picked St. John's over blue bloods and other high end programs. Joining to shed light on what Rick Pitino is getting in Ellis is his long time trainer Gary Maitland. Maitland has trained the Sheffield native since he was 16 and helped develop him into one of the premier playmakers in the EuroLeague. We discuss the kind of player he is, how his experience will lend to dominating the college game and more.

Episode 199: St. John's Falls to Duke 80-75 in Sweet Sixteen Heartbreak; A Reflection on the Season

Just like that it's over. A 30 win season comes to an end in Washington D.C. as St. John's loses to Duke 80-75. It took heroic efforts from Cameron Boozer, Caleb Foster and Isaiah Evans as they would power the #1 overall seed passed the 5 seed Johnnies. Zuby Ejiofor, Ruben Prey, Bryce Hopkins did all they could to try and will St. John's to victory. A 10 point lead in the 2nd half was not enough as the Duke zone threw off St. John's and their paint prowess got them back into it. Ultimately the Johnnies backcourt let them down as they had too many times this season, and it was too much to overcome one more time. So we reflect on the season, the gratitude and appreciation and we look ahead to the Portal and St. John's restocking and restarting for next year.

Episode 198: PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999 - Dylan Darling Sends St. John's to the Sweet Sixteen at the Buzzer!!!

For the first time since 1999, St. John's is headed to the Sweet Sixteen! After leading by 14 points in the 2nd half, Kansas mounted a come back. Tied with seconds left on the clock, Dylan "Church Bells" Darling drove to the rim and scored as the buzzer sounded sending the Red Storm to Washington DC. A game which saw Darryn Peterson make shots like a top NBA draft pick, Bryce Hopkins hit a career high six threes, Zuby Ejiofor scored 18 points and Ian Jackson contributed strongly. Rick Pitino writes another chapter of greatness in his third year as a the Johnnies leader. Joined by Jason Dimaio, Roger Rubin of Newsday and Kevin Connelly of StormThePaint and SiNow we recap the historic night and preview the Sweet Sixteen match-up against Duke.

Episode 197: St. John's Suffocates Northern Iowa into 79-53 NCAA Tournament First Round Win

The game was out of reach shortly after the ball was thrown in the air. Before most fans were in their seats it was 13-0. Northern Iowa was dead in the water. Led by Zuby Ejiofor who had a bad game by his standards, Bryce Hopkins continued strong play, and a balanced attack from the bench, St. John's got their second NCAA tournament win in as many years under Rick Pitino. Now as a matchup with Kansas on Sunday awaits, the Red Storm will have to cram to get ready fro Bill Self and his Jayhawks.

The Big Dance is here, March Madness is here, the NCAA Tournament is finally here. And there are plenty of storylines going into the week for the Red Storm. Much has been made of St. John's getting a 5 seed and sent out West for their first two rounds, so we'll talk about it. The Associated Press revealed their All-American teams today and Zuby Ejiofor was not on the first, second or third team. And that's nonsense, so we'll talk about it. And St. John's is a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and they kick it off this Friday in San Diego against the 12 Seed Northern Iowa Panthers. The players you need to know on the Panthers, how they play, what to be ready for plus how to beat their defense and more.

Episode 194: St. John's Wins the Big East Tournament, Again!

St. John's did it. Back to Back Big East Tournament Champions. Back to Back Big East Conference Champions. The first team in Big East History to do so outright. It was an unbelievable performance from the boys from Queens. Three wins in three days, knocking off Providence 85-72, knocking off Seton Hall 78-68 and the cherry on top was Saturday night inside a sold out MSG, St. John's obliterating UConn 72-52 to lift that trophy one more time. Cutting down the nets at Madison Square Garden is now a yearly tradition.

St. John's has done it. A tough fought game in Newark at the Prudential Center, the Red Storm would prevail 72-65 to clinch at least a share of the Big East Title as well as the #1 Seed in the Big East Tournament. Led by Zuby Ejiofor as well as clutch play from Ruben Prey, Dylan Darling, and others, the Johnnies capped off a 25-6 regular season with their 18th win in Big East play. St. John's has been battle tested and they knew they would have a rock fight on their hands. Why would they want it to come easy, as St. John's would claw and fight for greatness. An incredible roller coaster of a season has ended on a high note!

Episode 191: Zuby Ejiofor Leads #18 St. John's to 72-69 Win on Senior Night

Rick Pitino has said his teams are often slow on senior night, historically, and well they were just that on Tuesday night. As Red Storm fans said goodbye to Zuby Ejiofor and the other seniors, they would need another come from behind effort to prevail. Ejiofor's 23 points were the heavy lifting but it was Joson Sanon's 15 points in the 2nd half that won St. John's the game. With one game left in the regular season, St. John's will look to claim back to back Big East Conference titles and have their eyes set for another Big East Tournament title and a long March ahead. We're joined by Zach Braziller of the New York Post to recap and discuss.

Episode 190: St. John's Responds With Emphatic Bounce Back Beatdown of Villanova 89-57

The question on everyone's mind was how would St. John's respond from their historic loss to UConn last Wednesday. Rick Pitino said the players took the loss as hard as he and the coaching staff did, that's how he knew they'd respond. And they responded in a big way, with a blowout win over Villanova, 89-57. It was a no nonsense ass-kicking from start to finish, St. John's making sure to remind everyone who they are. Ian Jackson had his best game of the season and Zuby Ejiofor tallied 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to notch the 5th triple double in the last 40 years for St. John's.

St. John's extended it's winning streak to 11 with a 79-69 win over Providence to avenge their only conference loss of the season. But most people will not be talking about the game but instead the fracas that took place short after halftime. Six players were ejected after Duncan Powell's dirty foul on Bryce Hopkins caused an all-out brawl. With a short bench and in a hostile environment, St. John's would not be denied as Dylan Darling scored 18 of his 23 points in the 2nd half to help lead St. John's to victory. The Red Storm have improved to 20-5, 13-1.

If there was any doubt before if this team had guts, that goes out the window. In back to back games St. John's was down by at least 15 points in the second half and dug in deep. They came away with two wins, and at the Cintas Center, it was St. John's having to rely on once again use their defense to lead to offense. Thanks to Dillon Mitchell, Bryce Hopkins and Dylan Darling, the Johnnies made sure that Father Knew Best once again and St. John's got Rick Pitino win #900 - coming over Xavier coached by his son Richard. St. John's has now won six games in a row.

Episode 179: Road Warriors Red Storm Knock Off Villanova 86-79

Make it four wins in a row for St. John's as they improve to 6-1 to start Big East play following an 86-79 win against Villanova. A trip to the Main Line proved to be friendly confines for St. John's who have now won four of their six conference games on the road. They led by as many as 17 thanks to the best games of the season by Bryce Hopkins and Ian Jackson. Moments that previously caused St. John's to stumble, were answered by big shots and good defense. St. John's has seemingly turned a corner since that Providence loss, as they have a ton of momentum behind them.

Episode 178: Storm Soar in 90-73 Beat Down of the Blue Jays

The Red Storm are road warriors as they've gotten their third road conference win of the season knocking off the Creighton Blue Jays at home 90-73. Lefty has come on strong the last two games, earning a spot in the rotation and making the most of his opportunities, leading the Johnnies with 17 points in this game. The Red Storm dominated this game, which featured their best offensive half of the season and seemingly looks like the rotations are coming into focus. A big week was a success for Rick Pitino's squad earning two much needed quad 1 road wins.

Episode 177: Red Storm Rebound 84-70 in a Bounce Back at Butler

That's more like it. A dominant second half played out in the complete opposite way of the last game as St. John's used their defense to get a much needed road win. Thanks to Lefteris Liotopoulos and Ruben Prey plus Bryce Hopkins, the Red Storm dominated Butler and followed the formula that worked so well last year. St. John's relied on the three main returnees to win this game, as well as great connection on defense using the press and forcing 21 Butler turnovers. Picking up a much needed Quad 1 win, St. John's will look to take this momentum to Omaha as they will look to make it a road warrior week against Creighton.

Episode 176: Soft St. John's Blows Another Second Half Lead in Loss to Providence

It was not a happy new year for St. John's as their lack of toughness reared its ugly head again this season. Soft interior play, the inability to handle adversity, and not being able to put away a struggling Providence team led to the worst loss of the season on Saturday afternoon. A 33 points 15 rebound effort from Zuby Ejiofor was wasted because of St. John's inability to make a shot all second half. The guards for St. John's were non factors, the lack of adjustments to the struggles on offense were perplexing and St. John's season continues to walk a tight rope as a quad 3 loss in their own building now features on their resume.

Episode 175: St. John's Mauled by Wildcats in 78-66 Loss to Kentucky

Shades of the Auburn game in Las Vegas, it was another horrific second half where St. John's looked completely lost. Scoring would be nearly impossible for St. John's as a big Kentucky team got everything they were looking for. The Red Storm could only rely on the free throw line to score, as their last chance for a resume building win evaporated in Catlanta. Now St. John's must wear the title of being a major disappointment through 11 games of the season.

Episode 174: #22 St. John's Improves to 7-3 + Kentucky Preview with Matt Jones

St. John's opened conference play on Tuesday night in Queens with a 13 point win over DePaul. It was the Dylan Darling show as his 17 points powered St. John's to their first win in conference play. Backing that up was stellar defense for a third straight game, holding opponents to just 62 points per game. The Iona game was full of storylines, from Rick Pitino coaching his former team to Ian Jackson's haircut which led to much improved play as he gets the nod at starting PG. The Red Storm have rattled off three straight wins, as they build confidence for a huge game against Kentucky on 12/20.

It's the true definition of a win is a win as St. John's offense was anemic and thankfully Ole Miss was worse. Powered by Defense and 8 blocks by Zuby Ejiofor St. John's finally beat an SEC team for the first time since 2012. Poor shooting, rough half court offense and just an overall cold night for just about everyone following a 9 day break led to an ugly basketball night in front of almost 15,000 fans at MSG. Tons of questions still remain with this team as they improve to 5-3.

They bounced back against a solid Baylor team with a good win. And just as hope began to rise, the Red Storm blew an 11 point lead and dropped another in Sin City to #21 Auburn. Episode 170: Alabama Backcourt Too Much For St. John's in 103-96 Loss

The Garden was rocking, the Johnnies had the lead in the second half, but the trio of Labaron Philon, Aden Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell Jr were too much for St. John's to withstand. The Red Storm offense scored 96 points, even with a low volume and poor three point output, but it's the defense that left many fans scratching their heads. Powered by Zuby Ejiofor's All-American like 27 points and 10 rebound performance it took until the second half for the guards to get going. Alabama got great product from Taylor Bol Bowen to supplement the firepower from the guards at every turn.

So St. John's loses their first big game of the season, one of potentially six big non conference games, we discuss what needs to improve quickly if this team is to make noise later this season. We're joined this episode by Charles Branch of the Crimson Crossover Podcast covering Alabama.

Led by Dillon Mitchell and Zuby Ejiofor the big men in the paint set the tone. Ian Jackson was perfect from the floor, for 15 points and adding three triples. Ayo, Darling and Sanon all contributed greatly as St. John's kept their foot on the gas until the clock read 0:00.

Kadary Richmond fouled out, RJ Luis Jr. was benched and Zuby Ejiofor's solo strong performance wasn't enough as a historic season comes to an abrupt end thanks to John Calipari and his 10 seed Razorbacks.

I reflect on the loss, the decisions made, and this season.

It's a day that will go down in history, a day that will earn St. John's a long awaited banner to hang in Queens. For the first time in 40 years, St. John's are kings of the Big East conference all by their lonesome. In an ugly game inside the World's Most Famous Arena, St. John's would get the season sweep of Seton Hall with a 71-61 win. RJ Luis Jr. and Zuby Ejifor had big games scoring 41 of the Red Storm's 71 points leading them to their 26th win of the season, and 17th in conference.

Episode 132: Saturday Night Fever, Red Storm Rock Villanova 80-68

In front of over 18,000 fans St. John's made Madison Square Garden feels like the 80s again. Red was seen to the roof, and St. John's thanks to defense and RJ Luis Jr. made sure to send their fans home happy. It was a tough game that featured a red hot Villanova team and the nation's leading scorer, but St. John's held him at bay with double teams. For St. John's they battled their own adversity finding a way to come back from a deficit in the 2nd half without Deivon Smith who had a shoulder injury. It's the third win a row for St. John's over Villanova as they are off to a 5-1 conference start for the first time since the 2000-2001 season.

Episode 131: St. John's Gets Collective Effort Win on the Road Over Xavier

Xavier is always a tough place to play for the Johnnies but on Tuesday they made sure to never let up. Episode 130: St. John's Overcomes Poor Shooting to Beat Butler 70-62

St. John's was able to bounce back from a tough New Years Eve loss to Creighton with an eight point win at home against Butler. An awful shooting afternoon could not stop St. John's as they found a way in the 2nd half much like they have many times this season. Kadary Richmond asserted himself in the second half and made sure St. John's would leave victorious on a day they honored Lou Carnesecca on the weekend of what would have been his 100th birthday.

Episode 129: History Repeated, Red Storm Lose by 1 at Creighton

Just like last year in Omaha, it came down to the very end. St. John's had a chance to win it, not once but twice. RJ Luis Jr. had a chance to play hero but the refs swallowed the whistle at the end and St. John's could not find a way to get their third Big East win of the season. A game where St. John's led early on and looked like a machine, quickly turned into a St. John's team that had no offensive identity. Scoring was limited on both sides and St. John's could not find a way to capitalize on the slew of mistakes the Blue Jays made.

Episode 123: RIP Lou Carnesecca, St. John's Improves to 6-2 With Harvard Win

St. John's returned from The Bahamas to take on Harvard in the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena. A game in which they needed to restore confidence after a 1-2 outcome in paradise, it looked like they were well on their way. Double digit lead at half time, got up to 18 in the 2nd half and then they allowed Harvard to stick around. Ultimately it was only a 13 point win, with some good and some bad sprinkled in. They'll have a week to prepare for Kansas State in Queens.

Episode 107: Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith Commit to St. John's

St. John's needed to hit two home runs after their first few additions, and on Monday and Tuesday this week they hit back to back dingers. Deivon Smith, one of the best guards in the portal, a lightning fast play maker from Utah committed to Rick Pitino and St. John's on Monday. Kadary Richmond, from Seton Hall, followed Smith the next day coming over the bridge and discarding his Seton Hall blue for St. John's red. This dynamic back court may be the best in the Big East and in the conversation for best in the country when paired with Simeon Wilcher and stud incoming freshman Jaiden Glover.

St. John's is back in the win column, albeit an ugly return, a return none the less. Johnnies stop their losing streak with a 90-85 win over Georgetown on the road as they avoided a second half collapse but came very close to it.

The capstone to Wednesday came with Mike Repole before the game pledging his intention to help Rick Pitino and St. John's financially for the basketball program moving forward even more. We discuss his comments to the NY Post with Zach Braziller and what it hopefully will translate to in the future.

Boos came down from the crowd as St. John's continued to display a lack of toughness when adversity hit for the millionth time this season. After the game Rick Pitino had an all-time press conference that has made national headlines. We break it all down as this horrific St. John's season continues to spiral out of control.

Episode 94: St. John's Loses Again, Same Song and Dance

Stop me if you heard this one before, St. John's blew a second half lead again. A big opportunity presented itself in the form of a quad 1 road opportunity. St. John's took a lead into halftime, and when the game restarted St. John's, as they have all year, did not come out with any fire and ended up losing. Porous defense, Josh Oduro, and not a single made three for the second straight time in the 2nd half led to the 11th loss of the season. The hope for things to change in Queens is dwindling in year 1 of the Rick Pitino era.

Episode 93: Another Lead Blown, St. John's Falters Again

Marquette beat St. John's the same way it did in the first match-up. With a second half take over as St. John's let a 15 point first half lead slip away, as well as a 10 point second half lead go. Tyler Kolek turned St. John's into "barbecue chicken" beating them on every possession. With St. John's dropping their 6th game in 8 tries, time is running out as a promising season has been filled with almost wins.

Episode 92: No Match For Number 1, Johnnies Lose to UConn 77-64

Sold out MSG was in for a fight, at least for the first 27 minutes of the game. After that it was all UConn as they pulled away and St. John's didn't have any help for Daniss Jenkins to come back. St. John's has lost 5 of their last 6 and fans are in a bit of panic mode. The poor three point shooting, and free throw shooting reared it's ugly head again and it's got Coach Pitino vocal about the shortcomings of his roster.

Episode 91: St. John's Falls to Xavier, Drop to 13-8

St. John's had a week off to get ready for a road test in the Cintas Center. They had previously handled Xavier in December by 15 points. This time, Sean Miller would be ready as Xavier took care of St. John's 88-77. While the final score was not indicitive of how close the game was late, St. John's struggled in the first half, and there's a lot of questions and problems starting to surface with this roster. As February is here, and a game with #1 UConn looming, St. John's has to get right and start putting wins together.

Episode 89: St. John's Defensive Clinic Leads to Sweep of Villanova

It was another first in forever type of night for St. John's as they handled Villanova easily, again, this time at home. In front of over 12,000 fans, St. John's swept the season series against Villanova for the first time since the 1992-1993 season. It was all led by the tremendous defense by St. John's that held the Wildcats to 16% shooting from deep, as Joel Soriano bounced back to his old ways scoring 21 points and 9 rebounds to power the Red Storm. St. John's improves to 13-7 on the season, 5-4 in Big East play with a week off to prepare for a road game against Xavier.

Episode 88: St. John's Drops Third Straight in Another Heartbreaker

Twice in two weeks St. John's has lost a game to a ranked Big East Opponent by one point. Heartbreak part deux happened inside Madison Square Garden on Saturday when St. John's valiant comeback effort fell short as Chris Ledlum and Daniss Jenkins both missed crucial threes at the end of the game. Turnovers in the first half didn't help, poor defense in the 2nd half didn't help, yet St. John' showed toughness and resiliency but simply couldn't get over the hump. We recap it all as St. John's lost to #17 Marquette 73-72

Episode 87: Johnnies No Show In Jersey

St. John's once again proved that the Prudential Center was a house of horrors, getting their doors blown off for the second consecutive game, and dropping their second game in a row this season, 80-65. The game wasn't competitive for the most part as St. John's basically went through the motions until the final buzzer sounded. With Rick Pitino and Jordan Dingle both out with COVID, St. John's as a whole looked to be under the weather as well.

Episode 86: Heartbreak in Omaha, St. John's Lose 66-65

It was freezing, snowing and miserable outside the arena, when the buzzer sounded and the game was over St. John's would feel equally as terrible as the weather outside. Episode 85: Fran Fraschilla

St. John's has had some very interesting coaches patrolling the sidelines in Jamaica, Queens. One of those head coaches was Fran Fraschilla, now with ESPN as an analyst and broadcaster, Fraschilla was 37 when he got the St. John's job. He was a master recruiter and took SJU to the tournament for the first time in 5 years when he got there. While it didn't last long, Fraschilla was the coach that put together the elite eight team the year after he left, he had the fan base thinking he was the next Carnesecca.

We go through his days as coach, the good and the bad, we discuss St. John's after his time, and how they are on the upswing now. What Rick Pitino means, their relationship and how important it is for St. John's to be successful not only for the Big East but college basketball as a whole.

Episode 84: St. John's Holds Off Providence 75-73

St. John's is currently tied for first place in the Big East and has started conference play 4-1 for the first time in 23 years. The Johnnies came out hot against Providence at MSG and then had to withstand a mighty counterpunch. In the end, some missed free throws by St. John's and a timely rebound by RJ Luis made it a rollercoaster of a game that ended with a 75-73 win.

Devin Carter dazzled for Providence but this tough fought win for St. John's is what builds a team's resilience come February and March.

Episode 83: St. John's Beats Villanova 81-71, Improve to 11-4

St. John's went on the road and did something they haven't done since 1993, and that's beat Villanova at The Finn. Thanks to Joel Soriano and Daniss Jenkins the Johnnies were able to overcome not having Chris Ledlum, and a new career high by Brady Dunlap made sure of that. Dunlap got his first start as a Johnnie and rewarded Rick Pitino with 12 points in the 2nd half, to finish with 15. It was a solid defensive effort as the Johnnies held Eric Dixon and the Wildcats in check, something they often were unable to do in the past. St. John's is tied for first in the Big East at 3-1 and are now 11-4 on the season.

Episode 82: St. John's Bullies Butler in 16 Point Win

It was a huge night for the Johnnies who used their tenacious pressure defense in the 2nd half to make Butler uncomfortable. With Posh Alexander returning to Queens, it was the Johnnies who would hound the Dogs into submission. Brady Dunlap introduced himself to the fans in Queens with 13 points and Joel Soriano added another double-double in his final game in Carnesecca Area. Some late mistakes and missed free throw unfortunately had St. John's go home with the loss but there were plenty of silver linings to take away from the loss.

Episode 73: St. John's Obliterates Holy Cross, Improve to 4-2

After a tough week in Charleston, St. John's took a few days off to regroup. They stepped back onto the court in Queens on Saturday night and put a beating on Holy Cross to the tune of 91-45. It was the debut of RJ Luis who looked like a future star in a Red Storm Uniform. St. John's toned down the turnovers, dominated in the paint and got a bunch of points from their bench. On the heels of the Utah win, this Holy Cross dismantling was the type of confidence building win to keep the momentum rolling ahead of the road test against West Virginia.

Episode 72: St. John's Bounces Back, Beat Utah for 3rd Place in The Charleston Classic

St. John's left Charleston, South Carolina with two wins and momentum. After squeaking a win out against North Texas and falling to Dayton, the Red Storm had their hands full with a bigger Utah team. Luckily for Rick Pitino's crew, something clicked and the Johnnies put up 91 points in the most complete game played thus far. This was the St. John's team that a lot of people wanted to see and thought they'd see under Rick Pitino. I'm joined by Kevin Connelly from Storm the Paint to go over the much needed win for St. John's

Great bounce back performances by Chris Ledlum and Nahiem Alleyne were aided by Daniss Jenkins, Joel Soriano and Jordan Dingle's best game of the year.

St. John's comes home 3-2 as the easier part of the non-conference schedule awaits.

Episode 71: St. John's Splits First Two Games in the Charleston Classic

St. John's kicked off the Charleston Classic with a nail bitter of a win over North Texas 53-52. After a hot start, the Johnnies offense hit a brick wall and it took great team defense and some late Joel Soriano free throws to win. Next up for the Red Storm was the Dayton Flyers which started out much better for St. John's, things went well in the first half, and then it all fell apart in the 2nd half mainly because of the fouls, and poor defense. Dayton beat St. John's 88-81.

We react from Charleston as St. John's falls to 2-2 on the season and will play in the 3rd place game on Sunday.

Episode 70: Michigan Spoils Rick Pitino's Return to MSG

Out of the break nothing went right and St. John's ended up losing 89-73.

St. John's finally got a chance to play another team in a red jersey besides themselves. October 21st 2023 marked the first day that Rick Pitino coached the Red Storm in a basketball game. Albeit an exhibition against Rutgers, it definitely didn't feel like a game that didn't count. It took 10 extra minutes, and St. John's blew a 20 point lead but in the end came out on top.

St. John's beats Rutgers 89-78 in a wild game, one that Rick Pitino is happy went the way it did...double overtime and all.

St. John's hosted media day on 10/17/23 for it's Men's basketball program. We got to hear from coach Rick Pitino, speak to the entire roster, and watch practice. While there are expectations in Queens, Rick Pitino is steadfast that this team has a lot of work to do. The one thing that is for sure is they are ready to play someone other than themselves and the Rutgers exhibition is going to be the first real measuring stick for this roster.

We have injury news, NBA scouts at practice, some great anecdotes from Simeon Wilcher, and a great story from Brady Dunlap about his dad changing his jumpshot in 7th grade leading to tears, but also great success.

On Episode 59 we're joined by big man Sean Evans, a member of the 07-11 Red Storm under Norm Roberts and Steve Lavin. Sean has had a great career overseas and is starting his 13th year as a pro. He took some time to talk to me about his St. John's days, what it was like going through the turmoil of a coaching change, and everything he learned from it.

He credits Coach Mike Dunlap for believing in him and not letting him quit on St. John's when adversity hit his senior year. Sean gives out advice to young kids facing a similar career path after college and more.

Evans is now trying to do his part and help St. John's student athletes take advantage of their name, image and likeness, by being an advisor with Johnnies Collective. They are an NIL Collective getting started with resources stateside and overseas trying to impart their experience and wisdom to athletes.

Hiring Rick Pitino brings a lot of noise from the outside, good and bad. Since Rick Pitino was named head coach of St. John's in March there has been a ton of buzz, and Queens has been a hot bed of basketball action this off-season. With that buzz has of course been detractors and doubters. Said detractors and doubters, and perhaps even some St. John's fans, have been asked if all the sunshine and rainbows at St. John's is premature.

(5:50) I'm joined by Frank Molfetta as we break down the newly released non-conference schedule and how St. John's will fair in the pivotal swing games that are the Michigan, Charleston Classic, and West Virginia.

(24:49) Then we discuss some questions that will need to be answered if St. John's wants to be successful in year one of the Rick Pitino era. We play a little devils advocate, and discuss which questions hold water and which are just hate from the masses this off-season!

Rick Pitino has landed his splash of the off-season with Ivy League Player of the Year Jordan Dingle, committing to St. John's on Friday. The second leading scorer in college basketball last year, Dingle returns home to play for the new look Johnnies.

Over the last week, the Red Storm have also added RJ Luis, a transfer from UMass and their fourth Iona Gael transfer in Sadiku Ibine Ayo.

It's a guest packed show as Zach Braziller of the NY Post, Patrick Kane of the Red Storm Rapid Reaction Podcast and Frank Molfetta all return to help break down the busy week.

It's been just about 50 days since Rick Pitino took over the reigns at St. John's so why not drop episode 50 right along with it. The month of April saw a lot of roster turnover and new faces added. Fans will have 10 new names to learn as Rick Pitino restocks the shelves in Queens.

With only three players from last year's squad returning, many fans were worried early on about how the new staff would construct the team, what kind of vision would they have, and what kind of talent would be brought in. Well I'm here to break it all down, go through the new roster that still has three spots remaining.

Episode 46: St. John's Fires Head Coach Mike Anderson

On March 10th, St. John's announced that they have made a change in leadership with the mens basketball program and parted ways with Mike Anderson. After four seasons, St. John's failed to get to the post season under Anderson and there will be a new man patrolling the sidelines in Queens come November.

Episode 45: St. John's Suffers Deja Vu Big East Tournament Ending

After opening the Big East Tournament with a fairly easy 13 point win over Butler, St. John's had a double digit lead against #1 seed Marquette on Thursday afternoon. Much like last year against Villanova, in which they blew a 17 point lead, St. John's couldn't hang on and would end up losing in Overtime.

The offense and decision making by St. John's on the floor was lacking and off of the floor by Mike Anderson was questionable again. The third loss to Marquette has left fans screaming for change, and the noise around the program to head in a new direction at Head Coach amplifies.

Episode 44: Season Ends with Marquette Loss, 17-14, 7-13

A disappointing season came to a close on Saturday afternoon after a comeback effort fell short against the best team in the Big East. After being down by 19 early in the first half, St. John’s fought back valiantly to make it a tight game with seconds left.

We’ll touch on the UConn loss at MSG and how their fans infiltrated the Garden and what happens next for St. John’s as the next few weeks will be busy it seems. The Big East Tournament starts on Wednesday as St. John’s will face Butler at 3pm.

Episode 43: St. John's Sweeps Season Series With Georgetown 79-70

It's a game you're supposed to win and St. John's did just that, as they get a 79-70 win over the Georgetown Hoyas, sweeping the season series. Andre Curbelo returned to the court for the Red Storm and they would need his 5 steals and 11 points. It wasn't easy as St. John's poor three point shooting made the trip to Washington, and the inability to put a team away made this too close for comfort.

St. John's has two games remaining in the regular season before the Big East Tournament starts on March 8th.

Episode 42: St. John's Lack of Discipline Proves Costly in 77-67 Loss

In front of a sold out Carnesecca Arena St. John's was looking to make it 14-0 on Bobblehead night. They fought back from down double digits but turnovers, lobs and wide open threes were all catalysts in what would end up a 77-67 loss to the Creighton Bluejays.

The loss is just another chapter in a frustrating season where multiple players were suspended prior to the game as the rollercoaster of a year is nose diving to a finish.

Episode 41: St. John's Survives in Double OT

It took 50 minutes of game action to determine a winner including a Bill Rafferty-type ONIONS shot from Dylan Addae-Wusu, but most of all it took guts. St. John's fought from being down 13 points with 6:45 left in the game to not only force overtime but ultimately win the game.

Dylan Addae-Wusu had a career high 24 points, Joel Soriano notched his 21st double-double of the season as St. John's sweeps DePaul 92-83.

Episode 40: Friars Fall! St. John's Earn Big 73-68 Win

St. John's knocks off the #20 ranked Providence Friars at Madison Square Garden on Johnnies Day. In front of Coach K, St. John's got its second win over a ranked opponent this season in a much needed 73-68 win. David Jones was back for St. John's and helped lead the way in a game he dedicated to his late father.

A 29 point game from Bryce Hopkins couldn't save Providence as they had their worst shooting game of the year. St. John's showed that they weren't ready to give up on the season just yet, and has DePaul up next

Episode 39: From Bad to Worse, Butler Beats St. John's 68-66

How much worse can it get? A question that seems to be asked daily these days if you're a St. John's fan. The road trip comes to an end with another loss, this time to the hands of Bulldogs of Butler as St. John's blows another double digit lead. 68-66 St. John's falls as they mismanage the end of the game and a last second buzzer beater to go to overtime didn't leave Joel Soriano's hand quick enough.

St. John's continues to find ways to lose, continues to find ways to splinter as a team, as the season continues to get worse and worse. With just a few games left, hope is long gone, and the despair is all that is left this year.

Episode 38: Xavier Dominates St. John's in 96-71 Laugher

Xavier completed the sweep of St. John's on Saturday evening in an absolute drubbing 96-71. The Musketeers joined Seton Hall and Villanova as the other teams who have tallied two wins this year against the Red Storm. The Johnnies, who had travel issues prior to the game, seemingly left their defense back in New York as they were toy'd with all game. Jack Nunge and Colby Jones had their way as St. John's season is all but over as we saw them give up in another game.

Episode 37: Mike Vaccaro - NY Post

St. John's was hoping to get revenge to start the month of February against Seton Hall but would come up short. Much like the game where they were run out of the Prudential Center by 22 points, Seton Hall would use a few runs to end the first half and second half then a zone defense to stifle St. John's. From Andre Curbelo being ejected for slamming his glasses to disintegrating at the sight of a zone defense, St. John's continued to be a team incapable of handling adversity as they would be swept by the Pirates, 84-72.

After the Seton Hall recap, (10:58) I'm joined by NY Post lead sports columnist Mike Vaccaro to take us through the glory days of St. John's and his start in Arkansas as a Sports Writer. As someone who has known St. John's Head Coach Mike Anderson for over 30 years, who better to talk to to try and figure out why the Red Storm are, as he wrote, behind schedule in year 4 with Mike Anderson.

We discuss a young Mike Vaccaro covering those original 40 minutes of hell teams that Coach Nolan Richardson and Mike Anderson built. Why it worked at UAB, Mizzou, and Arkansas but hasn't at St. John's and so much more.

Episode 36: A Storr is Born

It took AJ Storr hitting a three with just four seconds left on the clock but St. John's survived against Georgetown at Madison Square Garden. It wasn't pretty, but sometimes you simply have to grind out a win, and the Johnnies did just that. Primo Spears had his way with St. John's to the tune of 25 points as they were missing Posh Alexander.

St. John's will have to continue to band together and play as a unit as they welcome Seton Hall to Queens next.

Episode 35: Defense Optional, Johnnies lose 104-76 to Creighton

St. John's seemingly did not bring their defense with them on the plane from New York as they were humiliated in Omaha on January 25th. A game after only scoring 49 points inside Madison Square Garden, St. John's completely gave up and allowed Creighton to have their way.

From open threes to wide open lay ups, Creighton would lead by as many as 31 points, looking like a top team in the Big East while the Red Storm simply went through the motions. It's only getting worse for the Red Storm as expectations are once again not being met.

Episode 34: Johnnies Offense No Shows, Lose 57-49 at MSG to Villanova

It was right there for the taking, a chance to really turn the season around. Friday night at the World's Most Famous Arena and St. John's forgot how to put the ball in the hoop. On their second home court, the Red Storm completely unraveled and allowed a mediocre Villanova team to sweep them for the season.

In front of a packed crowd, a ton of students and a chance to make it 3 wins in a row, Mike Anderson didn't have his team ready for the bright lights of Madison Square Garden as the roller coaster that is the 2022-2023 season heads back down.

Episode 33: St. John's Gets Signature Win Over #6 UConn 85-74

St. John's went into the XL Center trying to do something it hasn't done in almost 35 years, get a win. After a dominating win on Tuesday against Butler, St. john's hoped to bring their defense to Connecticut and they did just that. In what would be the best win of the Mike Anderson era, St. John's knocked off #6 UConn 85-74 to improve to 13-6, 3-5.

Captain Joel Soriano outplayed Adama Sanogo and Donovan Clingan, behind 21 turnovers the Johnnies brought the fight to UConn and the Huskies would have no answer.

Episode 32: St. John's Dominates Butler for 2nd Big East Win

Butler was exactly what the doctor ordered for St. John's as they stopped their losing streak with a 77-61 win in Queens. On Tuesday St. John's brought the energy on defense and locked down the Bulldogs all night. A monster performance from Joel Soriano powered St. John's to a much needed win. Their 2nd in Big East play, the Johnnies look better of late, as they now have a major test against UConn coming up.

Episode 31: St. John's Drops 5th Straight, Falling 83-80 to Providence

When will the losing end? We'll have to wait a few more days for an answer to that question as St. John's dropped its 5th game in a row to Providence on Saturday. In front of a lively home crowd, Providence overcame a nine point St. John's lead to win the game 83-80.

St. John's is inching closer to the bottom of the Big East as their season has gone completely off the rails. Moral victories have started to take place of real ones, as effort is being praised, while defense is being searched for.

Episode 30: St. John's Losing Streak Extends to 4 as Free Fall Continues

St. John's looked good for 20 minutes and then it didn't. After giving up 96 points to Marquette, the Red Storm dropped to 11-5, 1-4 with a four game losing streak. The same issues have plagued the team in those four losses and adjustments are simply not being made.

Frustration has boiled over for the fans, as everyone is wondering where is the defense? Where is the coaching? and When will the losing end? I try to answer some of these riddles but your guess is as good as mine.

It was a battle of two teams desperate for a win. St. John's coming off two straight losses to conference foes, while Seton Hall was looking for their first Big East win. The Red Storm started off well but quickly crumbled like in the Villanova and Xavier losses when Seton Hall went on a run.

It was a run that was never responded and St. John's got blown out on the road. A once promising start to the season has left many doubting the Red Storm from the coaching to the experienced roster. And things only get harder as Marquette comes to Queens next week.

And what happened in Queens was St. John's getting stripped naked for all to see. The score didn't tell the story of this game as a late spurt by St. John's proved to be too little too late after being down 18 points.

Episode 26: St. John's Drops to 11-2 with 78-63 Loss to Villanova

St. John's restarted its Big East season after coming home from Florida State by heading to Villanova. Looking for some revenge from the Big East tournament loss last March, St. John's was trying to win its 12th game of the year, but standing in the way was Kyle Neptune's Wildcats.

St. John's started the game hot and led by 11, and then it all fell apart. The Johnnies allowed Villanova to go on a run that they never looked back from.

Johnnies lose 78-63, and will look to regroup in a week against Xavier.

Episode 25: St. John's Shines in Florida, Beating FSU 93-79

The Johnnies hit the road to cap off their non-conference schedule on 12/17/22, taking on Leonard Hamilton and the Florida State Seminoles. St. John's made sure their offense was on the plane as they hung 93 points on FSU to improve to 11-1 on the season, finishing their non-conference schedule with just one loss.

It was another career day for Joel Soriano, Dylan Addae-Wusu had a career high as well, and plenty of guys helped the Red Storm leave the state of Florida with a win.

It's Big East play from here on out, Villanova is next, we look ahead as it's go time for the Red Storm.

Episode 24: Down Goes DePaul, Johnnies Open Big East Play 1-0

St. John's kicked off Big East play on December 7th, as they welcomed DePaul to Carnesecca Arena. The first two teams to square off in Big East conference play, the Red Storm handled business from start to finish to beat DePaul 86-67.

DePaul came into the game shorthanded and well...short. Their lack of size was a focal point for St. John's on offense as they went into the paint all game and asserted dominance. I'm joined by Patrick Kane of the Red Storm Rapid Reaction Podcast to break down Joel Soriano's 8th double-double, Andre Curbelo and Posh Alexander's strong games, and why this win over DePaul was the best 40 minutes of basketball St. John's has played this season thus far.

Joel Soriano continues his monster season, posting his 6th double double of the year, while St. John's had to find a way to win despite poor free throw shooting and off games from Andre Curbelo and David Jones.
