A life-altering transformation often starts with a single moment whose significance is not obvious.  Mine was the day, a quarter of a century past, that I left my 'normal' office job for the final time .

Since then it's been a convoluted journey that eventually lead to the creation of  Remote Work Europe, though it took me a while to figure out that ultimate destination!  But here we are, and what started as a modest Facebook group for Spain people is growing into a flourishing network, which has been recognised on the prestigious Remote.com influencer list for 2024.

The collective efforts and dedication of key members and collaborators have been instrumental in creating our platform, and when I look at the other people we are featured alongside, it makes me even more happy and proud. You'll find plenty of podcast guests past and present, as well as an array of people doing diverse and fascinating work to raise the remote work agenda, and professionalise and differentiate the space.

In this episode I reflect on my own journey, and the dearth of remote influencers, or bandwidth, available back when I started in 2000.

I open up about my own odyssey of tech, regulation, social acceptance, and family priorities, which eventually led us to the shores of Mediterranean Spain. And I hope it will contextualise why it means so much to me, to be able to help others create the same transformation in their lives, through the work we're doing with Remote Work Europe.

Today's adventure begins at Agaete  in Gran Canaria, where we bask in the panoramic views from rooftop terraces, immerse ourselves in a unique unconference session at a coffee plantation, and thrive in co-living accommodations. 

A new experience for us, and one which unlocked a world of future possibilities, long before the official Nomad City conference and its inclusive and enlightening agenda, which brought together remote work experts from all over the world.

The unique individuals and fascinating conversations at El Cabo offered a glimpse into the diverse lifestyles adopted by fellow digital nomads and remote workers. From understanding the shared values within the nomad space to recognising the creative and entrepreneurial endeavours around us, our experience was nothing short of enlightening. But it's not all work, we're also talking about taking some time off, unplugging and recharging as we gear up for an even more exciting season four of our podcast. 

Because the journey doesn't end at Gran Canaria; the remote work community is burgeoning across Europe. Lona Alia is not a freelancer right now... She's presently the head of revenue at SafetyWing, who specialise in underwriting the insurance needs of the new remote and mobile global population.

So it's unsurprising that her journey to this point was entrepreneurial, and further that she lives and embodies that spirit and lifestyle, even while running a large international team.

Of course, a deep understanding of the needs of solo operators is essential, in order to create products which serve them well. And as a Y Combinator graduate, Lona loves combining the startup intensity and drive, with the personally liberated lifestyle of digital nomad living, travelling around Europe with her young daughter. 

She is also living proof that you don't have to sacrifice the solopreneur mindset, OR your preferred lifestyle, just because you scale up successfully in response to global need.  Lona's insight and vision into entrepreneurialism and the future of work and life is informed and inspiring, and we also touch on the truly borderless Plumia project - which aims to create a brand new online country (though that is going to need a whole other episode to explore fully!)

Mark Izatt is a luxury brands consultant, early adopter of e-residency, and board member of the non-profit EERICA: the Estonian E-residents International Chamber Association.

EERICA is the official 'voice' of the more than 80 thousand strong community of e-residents, to the government of Estonia. They fulfil a vital lobbying and policy-making role, but also offer members highly valuable professional networking opportunities.
