We sit down with Barbara Ray, Dublin’s Nature Education Coordinator, and Greg Hitzhusen, an Ohio State University expert in human values and wildlife management. Both help to explain why so many Ohio communities are now talking about deer population control, deer aggression, and the health of local ecosystems.

First, it's important to understand how we got here with deer becoming more habituated to people: increased property damage, deer vehicle collisions, and a growing risk of defensive encounters during fawning season, especially dog walkers. Barbara shares what residents can do immediately from no feeding the animals to deer-resistant gardening and simple hazing. We also clear up a common myth: feeding deer can actively harm them, because corn and other high-starch foods don’t match their natural diet.

But, if you're curious about more than a dozen engineering projects happening all over Dublin from bridges to fiber optics to roundabouts, this is your episode! The Dublin Food Pantry served more than 10,000 people last year — our friends and neighbors in our beloved City. Yes, we're known as a thought-leading, innovation hub nationally with a thriving economy and class leading municipal services but it doesn't mean we're immune to societal challenges. One of them is hunger. Dublin reflects the broader data across Ohio in that 1 in 5 young people are food insecure. Senior citizens in our area face challenges as well as increased living expenses zap more from households on fixed incomes. That means our seniors are going hungry. Fortunately, we have a dynamic and passionate Dublin resident leading the charge at the Food Pantry in newly hired Executive Director, Julie Erwin-Rinaldi. As you'll hear in the conversation with Bruce and Lindsay, Julie comes to this work with a servants' heart as she spent decades working in non-profit, mental health and public sector behavioral health. Personally, Julie has called Dublin home for nearly 30 years and still volunteers here for numerous organizations. Wyandotte Chief shares insights on Native American History Month, dispelling myths and using the term 'American Indian'

“I'm a diplomat more than an activist, and my career journey has been one of understanding.” That's how Wyandotte Nation Chief Billy Friend describes his role as a leader in service to his tribal community. Chief Friend joins Lindsay and Bruce, in part, to talk about November as National Native American Heritage month. But this conversation goes much deeper as the Wyandotte's roots are embedded here in Ohio and across the Midwest. The Wyandotte were the last tribe to leave Ohio in 1843. They helped settle great cities like Detroit and Kansas City, Kansas. These days, Chief Friend visits Ohio often, and he calls a nearby Ohio city one of the most interesting places he's ever been. He's also brought young Wyandotte from Oklahoma to Dublin to visit tribal landmarks here including the Leatherlips Monument. (Yes, the Wyandotte leader called Central Ohio home in the 19th century) You'll also want to listen for several sage pieces of advice from Chief Friend, as it's obvious he's a servant leader, passionate historian and tremendous storyteller. Chief Friend is the first tribal chief to join Link Ahead, and we're so honored he joined us!

Pizza boxes and clamshell containers? Yes! Throw 'em in your recycle bins

Isn't it only appropriate in the month of November, when we celebrate so much with food, that we get new items added to the list of recyclables that involve food. Those clamshell containers for fruit and eggs are good to go now! Toss them in your recycle bin. Same story with pizza boxes. No need to separate the greasy box bottoms anymore from the tops. Joining Bruce and Lindsay to also talk about the do's and don'ts of recycling is Andrew Booker from SWACO. Did you know when you recycle an aluminum can here in Central Ohio, it can be back on a store shelf full of your favorite beverage in less than 60 days? That's great, but we also have some serious opportunities to improve: about 75% of the materials in the landfill could be diverted, recycled or reused. Andrew gives all of us ideas on how to do just that. Plus, we have to talk about food waste. More than one million pounds of food waste comes to the Franklin County landfill every day. Dublin is part of SWACO's Central Ohio Food Waste Initiative, so Andrew provides updates to that plan to make it easier than ever to compost those food scraps!

Ohio State University Women's Basketball Coach Kevin McGuff has access to the best workout facilities in the country at OSU. But many days, where does he choose to get his sweat on? At the Dublin Community Recreation Center! That says a lot: not just where he and his family choose to live, go to school and prosper but how he stays grounded and connected to our community as a whole. Coach McGuff actually joined us during what he calls his busiest time of year - the offseason. That's not a typo. You'll hear him tell it, but the basketball season itself is the grind of practices and games. The offseason is EVERYTHING else it takes to run one of the country's premiere women's programs: recruiting, massive travel, roster management, coaching appearances, off-season workouts; the list goes on. Plus, he and his wife, Letitia, have six children! Two are playing college basketball and the other four attend Dublin City Schools. Speaking of which, you have to hear what Coach McGuff says about Dublin Coffman's own, Jacy Sheldon, who was the fifth overall pick in the WNBA draft this year after an outstanding career at Ohio State. According to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), the 15-county Central Ohio region is expected to have a population of 3.15 million by 2050. It's not a typo – 3.1 million. And that number is actually an increase from previous projections. In 2023, Columbus was the fastest growing city nationally according to the Bank of America Institute. Even if regional leaders wanted to and we had the space to, we couldn't add enough new roadway lanes to accommodate our expected growth. So, the solution(s) is a multi-layered approach centered on increased mass transit while continuing to make Dublin even more bike and pedestrian friendly. Be honest, have you thrown one of those plastic clamshell containers for strawberries or blackberries in your recycle bin? That's a recycling no-no, and that's why this episode is so timely. April is Earth Month, and as our residents know and practice themselves, Dublin is becoming greener and more sustainable every day. But it's always important to review and update the do's and don'ts of recycling because things evolve constantly, and that's a great thing! Our partners at SWACO (Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio) help us and all of Central Ohio do that in multiple ways: educational programs in schools, tours of the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill, business partnerships and grants for which your organization can apply for possible financial assistance. As Lindsay and Bruce discovered, the landfill has a 'shelf life,’ and it's up to us to extend it. Family legacy, a passion for neighbors and what the pandemic taught Mayor Chris Amorose Groomes

When newly sworn in Mayor (for a second time) Chris Amorose Groomes was 8 years old, she'd ride her bike down Sawmill Road to Tuller Fruit Farm for a delicious apple fritter on Saturday mornings. She'd see maybe 10 or 12 cars on the long ride as Sawmill, then, was just a two-lane road. Today, we know how busy Sawmill is and Home Depot now stands on the fruit farm property. It's that kind of history and institutional knowledge she brings to the job along with her years on City Council. But the Mayor's family also has a steadfast dedication to City service, and it's instilled in her: her mother founded the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, helped write the original charter for the City and her father served as Dublin's Vice Mayor. Mayor Amorose Groomes talks about that plus her vision to keep Dublin on the path for global leadership in sustainability, fiber to the home, quality of life and transportation. City ordinance helps control wild animals, protect your property and educate residents

Did you know Dublin has a wildlife expert who can answer your questions on everything from plants that deer love and hate to how a skunk smell gets in your house or car? She's Dublin's Nature Education Coordinator, Barbara Ray, and her work comes from a natural and passionate place. Barbara first started 'rescuing' tarantulas as a kid and grew up loving the outdoors and all animals. She later led a horse breeding program in the Cleveland area, then came to work at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and fortunately, for us, that led to her coming to the City of Dublin. Barbara does so much from hosting classes and school groups to speaking to residents about all things nature and animals. Speaking of which, Barbara, Lindsay and Bruce explain a new city ordinance amendment regarding wild animals, what you need to know about the current deer mating season, plus some myth-busting on what really works if your pet gets sprayed by a skunk. He’s back! Jeremiah Gracia on bolstering Dublin's economy and fostering dynamic partnerships

Who says you can't come home again? Not Jeremiah Gracia! In October, our City announced Jeremiah had accepted the position of Director of Economic Development. He brings nearly two decades of economic and business development experience, relationships throughout the region, plus two degrees from his alma mater, Bowling Green State University. Engrained in that experience are the nine years (2011-2020) Jeremiah spent here, on the City of Dublin's economic development team. He then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan to lead its economic development efforts. Jeremiah is absolutely ecstatic to be back and talks with Lindsay and Bruce about his vision for Dublin and how we can build dynamic public and private partnerships locally, statewide and regionally. Dublin honors Veterans Day with a resident who kept us safe while hundreds of feet below sea level

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11, and we're so proud to welcome U.S. Navy veteran and Dublin Veterans Committee member, Steve Dickman, to Link Ahead. Steve shares with Lindsay and Bruce the fascinating and demanding lifestyle of serving our country on a Navy submarine. And how's this for serendipity? He's an Ohioan who served aboard the USS Toledo! Steve's public service didn't end there. His grandmother was a public school teacher, and when his active-duty military service ended, she encouraged him to keep serving the public. So, he continues to today as an educator; first as a teacher and now an assistant high school principal. Steve and his daughter have also raised some philanthropic dollars by running, and he shares one of his favorite running routes in Dublin that you may like to run, walk or bike, too. We're honored to have Steve on this episode to pay tribute to the service of all veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day!

New campaign aims to make streets safer for drivers, bikers, walkers -- everyone

You can also get trained to use a speed laser and even go on a ride-along with Dublin police to see how speeds are enforced. It's a serious topic because speed is a leading factor in all types of crashes from fender benders to fatalities. The City's Director of Transportation & Mobility, Jeannie Willis, talks to Lindsay and Bruce about the science and data behind traffic, speed and the engineering that goes into all of it. Plus, we're launching a new campaign called 'Slow Down Dublin' and resident feedback and participation will be key factors in its effectiveness. You may scratch your head after hearing Dublin Public Services Administrator, Michael Darling, say our recycling numbers are going down. That’s why context is so important on just about anything, right? Don't worry, Dublin still outpaces Ohio and the nation when it comes to recycle rates but overall, we're recycling less because packaging is getting lighter and lighter. It's a tonage thing and a good thing. This episode is super topical, too, as Lindsay, Bruce and Michael discuss the upcoming and ever so popular, Document Destruction day, which is now Sustainable Saturday! On October 14, you can bring everything from sensitive documents to old towels and sheets to be properly disposed of. Last year, you also kept more than 68,000 pounds of pumpkins out of the landfill by composting those gourds. Let's do it again this year as that effort begins soon, too. If all of this isn't incentive enough to recycle and compost even more, Michael shares some pretty big numbers on how all of these efforts create jobs and revenue!

That tremendous work was created by a local couple, but artists worldwide submit their ideas to be part of our arts scene. The person who manages it all is Dublin's Public Art Manager, Dr. Ava Truman Morgan. She also talks with Bruce and Lindsay about that entire process; how does an idea eventually become a public painting, sculpture or in the case of Valentina's, a striking 3,400 piece ceramic tile column? Dublin, Ohio's Ian Montgomery had a momentous phone call to make; some 3,560 miles away to his mother in Dublin, Ireland. He was flat-out giddy to share the news, that he was named the 2023 Honorary Chair of the Dublin Irish Festival. It's been quite the journey the last 20 years for Ian, and he shares it all with Lindsay and Bruce in this episode. Ian was on the beat 10 years as a police officer in Ireland when he happened to meet an American woman there. Fast forward to present day, they're married with 4 kids, live in our great city and he owns Fado Pub and Kitchen in Bridge Park. Hollywood couldn't script this, right? A Dublin to Dublin life, owner of an Irish pub and now honorary leader of the largest three-day Irish festival in the world. And yes, his mom is very, very proud!

World Series Champ and Dublin resident Kent Mercker says this sport is more addictive than baseball

Kent Mercker has never taken baseball, or, for that matter, his life, for granted. Many people know about the accolades: three World Series appearances, one championship and a solo no-hitter against the Dodgers, over an 18-year career. He's the most dominant pitcher to ever graduate from a Dublin City Schools and with a new MLB season starting now, we had to ask him how the Reds and Guardians seasons, respectively, might unfold. But did you know he's also been a test case for health researchers after falling to his knees on the mound and being rushed to the hospital with brain bleed?

Today, Kent is long since retired and still calls Dublin home. He still goes to the ballpark, too. A lot! He's also very open with advice for parents and young athletes on just how hard to push to get better at any sport. (Hint: always keep it fun) The other dominant force in his life these days is pickleball. Kent calls it the most addictive sport he's ever played, and he has the credentials to prove it. Another first for our City of Dublin podcast. Our first international recording and what a day it was with our official Friendship City of Dublin, Ireland. Lindsay and Bruce are usually together hosting each episode at City Hall but for this one, Lindsay joined Bruce just minutes after taking in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Ireland!

She's part of a small delegation there on official business to renew our Friendship City agreement and explore ways to collaborate on issues ranging from economic development to citizen engagement to tourism. Mayor Jane Fox is there too, touting our city, our people and our rich history. Plus, a couple of Irish guests join this episode and they make a special promise to our Dublin. The 2023 St. Patrick's Day Parade is almost here, and this year's Grand Leprechaun, Deb Papesh, has her shamrock-adorned hat already ready to go! That's no surprise if you know Deb. She's the quintessential Dublin organizer, collaborator and volunteer who's been omni-present since moving here in the mid-90's. She and her husband raised two girls in Dublin City Schools and devoted countless hours to local students, PTO, school events, sports and much more. So much so, Deb was inducted into the DCS Hall of Fame in 2020! Today, her daughters continue to give back to Dublin, one as a dentist and the other as a school teacher, so public service is indeed generational and thriving from Papesh family roots planted here decades ago. Plus, you just have to hear about Deb's cake that requires 261 eggs, 3 cups of vanilla and 200 pounds of powdered sugar!
