Dr. Eric Zillmer, The Happiness Lab

Today we are joined by Dr. Eric Zillmer the Carl R. Pacifico Professor of Neuropsychology at Drexel University and Director of The Happiness Lab, a think tank that studies the psychological science behind happiness and well-being. Eric and his students investigate what contributes to joy in daily life. Through teaching, research, and public engagement, Dr. Zillmer uses evidence-based positive psychology to help individuals and communities understand and cultivate conditions that support a fulfilling life.

Additionally, Eric serves as President of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, a nonprofit that organizes classical music events and music education in Philadelphia. He is on the board of US Squash, a national nonprofit governing body for the sport of squash in the United States. Dr. Zillmer also serves as a board member of the German Society of Pennsylvania, the nation’s oldest German-American cultural nonprofit based in Philadelphia. He has been involved in the Society’s Stiftungsfest celebration and leadership activities, including participating in committees that help advance its cultural and community programs.

Dan O'Brien, Bentley Systems

Joining our conversation today is Dan O'Brien, Director of Philanthropy and Impact at Bentley Systems. Dan has spent the past twenty-five years working across corporate, government and non-profit sectors, both domestically and internationally, specializing in building coalitions, finding solutions to challenges, and removing obstacles. His last two decades have been highlighted by managing a youth center in the Middle East at the height of the Iraq War as a Peace Corps volunteer, resettling and building communities for refugees and survivors of torture and trauma, building capacity in neighborhoods with high gun violence and ensuring food access in Kensington during the Covid pandemic. In his current role, Dan manages philanthropy and volunteering efforts for Bentley Systems focusing on four mission driven efforts: STEM programming, infrastructure, natural disaster relief, and community.
As a frequent volunteer, combined with experience creating and managing volunteer projects (with the City of Philadelphia and now with Bentley Systems), to making it his full-time job for more than two years as a Peace Corps volunteer, Dan has participated and celebrated all aspects of the volunteer cycle.

Jennifer Schoener is a nonprofit leader, arts advocate, and community builder dedicated to expanding access to inclusive arts and education. She serves in a leadership role with the Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation, where she helps guide programs that empower young people through music, creativity, and innovative learning experiences.

Mohammed Rahman is a freshman in Villanova University majoring in Electrical Engineering. Fueled by his passion for volunteering, Mohammed has joined and initiated a multitude of volunteering programs/clubs/services and efforts stemming from early on in his life. As a volunteer, he ensures the task at hand is executed efficiently with joy and passion. As a leader, Mohammed organizes volunteer meetings and opportunities, and lead/regulate services.

Heather has spent most of her career in historic site administration and nonprofit management in Chester County. She's served as Executive Director at The Mill at Anselma National Historical Landmark in Chester Springs and Historic Sugartown in Malvern. More recently, she has consulted on the development of Chester County's Heritage Tourism Plan and other regional interpretation and preservation planning projects. Currently, Heather serves as one of Chester County Community Foundation's Community Engagement Officers to coordinate planning across Chester County for America's 250th celebration.

Sheila Rossi, Phoenixville Free Clinic

Joining the conversation today is Sheila Rossi, Volunteer Director of Phoenixville Free Clinic. Sheila has been in the healthcare field for over 30 years. Her career began in the Rochester, NY area at a community hospital in the Finger Lakes where she worked with the strategic planning department of the hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield to manage a joint health insurance product to bring lower cost health insurance to residents of the region. She later moved to Plymouth Meeting, PA, where she led a patient safety organization focused on collecting and analyzing hospital adverse events to improve patient care and safety. Most recently, she jumped at the opportunity to serve as Volunteer Director at the Phoenixville Free Clinic, where she recruits and supports the dedicated volunteers who care for the community’s uninsured and underinsured.

Christy Marshall-Silva, Aidan's Heart Foundation

This week we are joined by Christy Marshall-Silva, Founder and Executive Director of Aidan's Heart Foundation. Christy, a PA-certified Reading Specialist and mother of four, founded Aidan's Heart Foundation in 2011, named after her oldest son who died from Sudden Cardiac Arrest at age 7. When she learned how many youth are affected each year by SCA, and that death from cardiac arrest is often preventable, she plunged into action to educate, empower and enact public awareness and training with life-saving skills and provide cardiac testing for kids and teens. Since officially incorporating in 2013, Aidan's Heart Foundation has trained over 13,000 youth and adults in CPR, placed 150 AEDs in local communities and screened the hearts of 2,300 youth.

From painting schools in need of updates to organizing food drives for those with food insecurity, Shara has provided her time and resources to give back to her community. She has organized large scale volunteer initiatives across multiple counties and engaged hundreds of volunteers. Shara is a Board Member for Bergen Volunteer Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Meals on Wheels North Jersey is celebrating 50 years of service this year. Their motto of being “more than a meal” motivates approximately 500 volunteers to bring a hot meal the client’s door. Even school children share their time to help bring a smile to a senior’s face.

Sue Davoli, Exit Zero Jazz Festival

Melodic sounds, gentle waves, and pre-summer rays makes Sue Davoli’s experience as the Box Office Queen for the Exit Zero Jazz Festival so much fun.

“Complex harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and a heavy emphasis on improvisation” (Masterclass.com, Nov 8, 2020) sets the stage for the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Founded by Michael Klein upon his return from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

COVID prompted Exit Zero to pivot in order to bring music back to Cape May. Volunteers helped to navigate the protocols and cerate a space where everyone felt safe.

Training for their volunteers’ ranges depending on the task being asked to perform. Student volunteers bring a unique perspective to the festival.
Sue shares the how Exit Zero motivates their volunteers, when a T-shirt just won’t do.

It is the 10th anniversary of the festival this year. The line up includes Artemis, Charles Lloyd, Keyon Harrold Quintet, Melissa Aldana, and Marcus Miller. New Orleans Second Line, Snacktime Philly, and Brass Queens. And Sue’s favorite, Conjunto Philly.

Delores Connors, Total Equity Now

Educator, author, and volunteer Delores Connors speaks to the unspoken commitment individuals make when they volunteer.

Author of I Don’t Want to Go! and You See, Mom... Delores reflects on the challenges of children on the spectrum.

Delores helps to shine a light on the disproportionate equity of reading support in Harlem, advocating literacy through Total Equity Now (TEN). Schools without libraries and librarians are the catalyst for TEN to put books into the hands of young readers.

The social enterprise Write to Matter provides a vehicle to communicate support to individuals and families enduring the hardships of a loved one being incarcerated. Volunteers share compassion on Mother’s Day through distributing greeting cards designed to speak to the heart of the recipient. Write to Matter is also producing a reading project to bridge the divide between incarcerated fathers and their children. This project captures the voices of the fathers reading stories to their children.

Delores shares insights on family support when she volunteers, as well as sharing her greatest volunteering challenge.
