This program included less of the 50s-60s "old stuff";  I did feature a Beach Boys song to honor the passing this week of Brian Wilson, the musical genius perhaps on par with Paul McCartney (and the PNW connection is Carol Kaye, the session bassist for many Beach Boys songs, is from Everett, WA-so there).

This program included less of the 50s-60s "old stuff";  I did feature a Beach Boys song to honor the passing this week of Brian Wilson, the musical genius perhaps on par with Paul McCartney (and the PNW connection is Carol Kaye, the session bassist for many Beach Boys songs, is from Everett, WA-so there).

]]> Douglas Furr Buzzsprout-14260765 Sat, 06 Jan 2024 17:00:00 -0800 9369 full false Notes by NW- November 9, 2023 Notes by NW- November 9, 2023 Douglas Furr Buzzsprout-13945476 Thu, 09 Nov 2023 22:00:00 -0800 10794 full false Notes by NW November 2, 2023 Beatles and the PNW Episode Notes by NW November 2, 2023 Beatles and the PNW Episode This was a really fun show, as it included covers of Beatles songs by PNW artists, and the first hour culminated with the debut of the first new Beatles song in decades, Now and Then, which began as a lousy demo by John Lennon in 1978.  Yoko Ono gave it to the surviving Beatles in 1994, and George added some guitar to the Lennon tracks.  But the technology then wasn't like it is today.  Through the tenacity of Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin, along with director Peter Jackson, and a little help from my friend AI, they were able to clean up the tracks.  Last year Ringo and Paul recorded vocals, piano, bass and drums to complete the song.  So all the elements are original, and AI just helped clean it all up, resulting in a sweet song we never thought possible.     In the last hour I played Mud Shark by Frank Zappa.  Why, you ask?  The Mud Shark story takes place at the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle, where the Beatles stayed in 1964 on their tour.  No other hotel welcomed them as guests....the crowds?  The mop top n'er do wells?   Who knows, but none of the hotels could have a photo like the iconic fishing pole Beatles shot.

The third hour features music from performers at The Thing music festival in Port Townsend this weekend.   I got to attend on Friday, and the most interesting and awesome band was from Staten Island, NY called the Budos Band, a combination of rock, Afro pop, brass, and assorted craziness.  Great showmanship in their live show.

The third hour features music from performers at The Thing music festival in Port Townsend this weekend.   I got to attend on Friday, and the most interesting and awesome band was from Staten Island, NY called the Budos Band, a combination of rock, Afro pop, brass, and assorted craziness.  Great showmanship in their live show.

]]> Douglas Furr Buzzsprout-11250877 Fri, 02 Sep 2022 11:00:00 -0700 168 full false NW Passages-September #1: The Canoe and the Saddle by Theodore Winthrop NW Passages-September #1: The Canoe and the Saddle by Theodore Winthrop Theodore Winthrop was a New Haven, CT dandy who ventured west to California, the Oregon and Washington Territories, and British Columbia in 1853 to explore the Pacific NW, its natural beauty, and its native peoples.  

 The story of his journey, The Canoe and The Saddle, was first published in 1862, a year after the death of Winthrop in one of the early skirmishes of the civil war.  

Winthrop’s depiction of the Northwest, particularly Washington Territory, earned the book great popularity. The town of Winthrop, Washington took on his name in 1890 and Mount Rainier’s Winthrop Glacier is also named for the explorer and author due to his detailed descriptions of the landscape in his book.

]]> Theodore Winthrop was a New Haven, CT dandy who ventured west to California, the Oregon and Washington Territories, and British Columbia in 1853 to explore the Pacific NW, its natural beauty, and its native peoples.  

 The story of his journey, The Canoe and The Saddle, was first published in 1862, a year after the death of Winthrop in one of the early skirmishes of the civil war.  

Winthrop’s depiction of the Northwest, particularly Washington Territory, earned the book great popularity. The town of Winthrop, Washington took on his name in 1890 and Mount Rainier’s Winthrop Glacier is also named for the explorer and author due to his detailed descriptions of the landscape in his book.
