It’s interview time again!

In this episode, we spoke with Divinia Eather from Eather Group and it was a great discussion.

Eather Group is a family business that has been innovating cost-effective, sustainable solutions to traditional construction issues for 14 years in Western Sydney.
 
Divinia tells us about how their small business has grown from 2 trucks and just the business owner to today having a fleet of 20 trucks and more than 40 employees.

They have a strong committment to diversity, equity and inclusion and Divinia shares how they have seen this translate to engagement and retention amongst their staff. They are proud to share: 

• 38% of their staff are women
• 25% of their staff are Indigenous
• 100% of their staff are local to Western Sydney

It’s interview time again!

In this episode, we spoke with Dr Belinda Chapman, Co-Founder and CEO of Quantal Bioscience and it was a great discussion.

Quantal Bioscience is a private research laboratory focussed on doing good big things with tiny microbes, across the food, agriculture and education sectors. Belinda herself has more than 25 years’ experience as a research microbiologist, and has led, managed, developed and inspired small teams of 5-20 research scientists for most of the past 20 years, and in a range of workplaces, from state and federal government institutes to industry, large and small.

Belinda opens up about her own journey of being a leader and comparing the difference between leading a team for a company you work for, and leading a team in your very own business. She also shares some great tips to improve engagement and retention in your workplace.

In this episode, we look at the darker side of teamwork...and situations when teamwork isn't working for you.

Do any of these sound familiar?

• 'Decision Desert' - where everyone in the team waits for someone else to decide to move forward. All opinions are welcomed for the effort of being shown to be collaborating, but there's a lot of confusion, and ultimately no decision is made.
• 'Misty Valley' - catering to everyone because you don't want to upset anyone, but it's leading to a lack of clarity. Many discussions may happen, and people may follow along, but ultimately, not everyone understands the vision completely. 
• 'Murky Meetings Mountains' - ever been to a meeting, but you're not sure what you're there for? There's no agenda, or it's a meeting that could have been done via email? There are actions to come out of it, but nothing is done in between the meetings, so you're on a roundabout where the same thing keeps happening.
• 'Forest of Irresponsibility' - this is where no one takes accountability. There's a feeling amongst the team that someone will do it. It can then lead to no one doing it.
• 'Volcano' - work is going in all different directions at differing levels. Still, there is an uneven or unfair distribution of effort as someone on the team may say they will do it but only because others don't.

Angela's HR career has spanned across many industries and types of organizations from small to medium size. Like Susan, Angela's expertise covers all the areas of the employment relationship and she too has qualifications in business, HR and Accounting.
 
Both have a strong belief that good HR management can benefit any business, no matter the size. With 40 years combined experience, Angela & Susan can guide you with simple and effective tools and coaching to help make people management much more managable.

What is a 'Knocker Upper', and where would you get one? How would you know if you had a good one? 

Sometimes HR terms like 'essential selection criteria' and 'KPIs' can sound like so much gobbledygook to the uninitiated. You may have a vague idea of what they mean, but probably don't give them much thought in your day-to-day work - unless you're in HR, of course.

In this episode we talk about the difference between contractors and employees because your obligations regarding tax, superannuation and Workers Compensation will differ if you are paying contractors or employees.

As the employer, you’re responsible for getting it right…so we will help you be sure by taking you through the 6 attributes the ATO give you to decide if you need to pay super or withhold tax.

We will also discuss the definition regarding Workers Compensation and explain why it’s different.

You will understand when to pay Superannuation, when to withhold PAYGW and when to include a worker in your Workers Compensation policy and give you tools to determine if you are meeting obligations.

Do you employ Casual staff in your business?

In this episode, we discuss Casual Conversion. It has been 12 months since this legislation change that allowed a pathway for Casuals to transfer to Permanent employment. 

So now is a great time to consider 

• How, when and why you should offer Casual Conversion

How is your business recovering from COVID?

It’s been a long 2 years with multiple lockdowns, stand-downs, home-schooling, face masks, hand sanitiser, social distancing, work from home, zoom/teams meetings, vaccinations etc. And whilst we are still living with COVID in our communities, we are moving forward.
