What does circumcision have to do with Christians today—and why does the Bible talk about it so much?

In Part 2 of our conversation on circumcision, we move beyond the physical sign to discover what it was pointing toward all along: a new heart, a new covenant, and a new creation made possible through Jesus.

The early church wrestled with whether Gentile believers needed to be circumcised to truly belong to God. Paul’s answer was clear: salvation and transformation don’t come through religious activity or external signs. They come through the work of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

From Abraham’s covenant to the cross, from the “circumcision of the heart” to the significance of the eighth day, Scripture tells one connected story of a God who is making all things new.

And that leaves us with a much more personal question:

Instead of constantly asking God what we need to add to our lives, what if we started asking Him what needs to be cut away?

Why Did God Choose Circumcision? | Understanding the Biblical Sign

Why did God choose circumcision as the sign of His covenant with Abraham? Of all the possible ways God could have marked His people, why this?

In this message, we trace the story of circumcision from Abraham and the covenant in Genesis to its deeper meaning throughout Scripture—and ultimately to Jesus. What initially seems like a strange ancient practice becomes part of a much bigger biblical story about covenant, grace, faith, obedience, and belonging to God.

Abraham wasn’t chosen because he was circumcised. Circumcision was the visible sign that he already belonged to God. In the same way, our obedience doesn’t earn us a place in God’s family—it reveals the reality of our faith.

Faith creates the relationship. Obedience makes it visible.

Is God angry with me?

There may not be an explanation that makes suffering hurt less. But Scripture gives us a hope that reaches beyond whether healing happens in this life.

The People Around You Are Shaping Your Future | Sent

The people around you may be shaping your future more than you realize.

When God called Saul, He didn’t just give him a new purpose and send him out alone. He surrounded Saul with people who could see beyond his past, sacrifice for his calling, use their influence on his behalf, and help him make difficult decisions with wisdom.

In Week 15 of Sent, Pastor Scott walks through Acts 9 and shows us why the people we allow to influence our lives matter so much.

God rarely gets us where He wants us to go by ourselves. He sends people into our lives who help us become the people He created us to be.

So who’s in your circle?

Are the people closest to you constantly reminding you of who you used to be—or helping you see who God is calling you to become? Are they supporting your calling or pulling you back toward your old life? And just as importantly: Are you becoming that kind of person for someone else?

The Extra Point - Fearful but Faithful and Focused

When following after Christ we often view fear as a sing we are not supposed to do something, but that isn't exactly true. We may often be fearful to do the things God is asking of us, but fear doesn't mean we aren't still able to be faithful. We can stay faithful to our calling while being focused on the mission that is bigger than our fear saying, "Here I am Lord."

God Never Asked You to Be Fearless—Just Faithful | Sent

The Most Dangerous Kind of Faith

In Acts 8, we're introduced to two men who appear to have faith. Both witness God's power. Both respond to the gospel. But only one experiences genuine transformation.

Do I want God... or do I just want what He can do for me?

It's possible to love God's gifts more than God Himself. We can seek His forgiveness, His blessings, His provision, or His protection while never truly surrendering our lives to Him. Simon the magician wanted God's power for his own gain. Philip simply wanted God to use him.

That raises a question every one of us must answer:

Am I allowing God to use me, or am I trying to use God for my own purposes?

Too often, we've reduced following Jesus to a formula:

Pray a prayer.
Get baptized.
Go to church.
Serve.
Give.
Know the right answers.

But Jesus never said those things were the evidence of genuine faith. He said the evidence would be a transformed life marked by surrender, obedience, and lasting fruit.

This message isn't meant to scare you—it's meant to wake you up. Not so you'll live in fear, but so you'll honestly examine whether your faith is centered on Jesus or on what you hope to gain from Him.

3. Prayer: praying regularly for one another and the needs on others

It’s possible to look like you’re following God… without actually being changed by Him.

In Mark 11, Jesus approaches a fig tree covered in leaves. From a distance it looks healthy and alive—but when He gets closer, there is no fruit. Later that same day, Jesus walks into the temple and flips over tables, declaring that what was meant to be a house of prayer had become a den of thieves.

Both moments reveal the same warning: it’s possible to look spiritual on the outside while something is missing on the inside.

The people in the temple were busy with religious activity, but their hearts were far from God. And the truth is, the same danger exists today. We can attend church, sing worship songs, serve on a team, and still miss the transformation God wants to do in us.

Jesus isn’t looking for appearances. He’s looking for fruit.

The good news is that Jesus didn’t come to improve empty religion. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for God’s Spirit to live in us and truly change our hearts.

What’s Holding You?

In 1981, the walkways inside the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse gave way because they were carrying more weight than they were designed to hold. What looked secure collapsed under pressure — and lives were changed forever.

The Good Water

In this week’s message, Pastor Scott challenges the consumer-driven version of Christianity that has become so common in modern church culture. Attendance at Southridge is growing, lives are being changed, and God is clearly moving — but with momentum often comes fear, doubt, and the temptation to settle for a comfortable faith.

Jesus dealt with the same thing. Crowds flocked to Him as long as He healed, fed, and amazed them… but the moment He raised the bar, many turned back (John 6). They wanted the miracles — not the Messiah. They wanted comfort without sacrifice, blessing without obedience.

Today, nothing has changed.

In 2 Samuel 23 we meet David’s “Three Mighty Men,” warriors whose devotion to their king wasn’t convenient, casual, or half-hearted. Pastor Scott shared a very raw truth from his past that went undealt with for decades and caused him the same number of years of anger and anxiety. Everyone's past is unique but there's no doubt that we all have experienced some sort of unhealed trauma in our lives that's causing those same fruits.
