 Sarah Chapman is the Founder of STEM Changemakers, a program focused on empowering underrepresented regional Australian girls in STEM. She has over twenty years’ experience as a secondary science educator and Science Head of Department. Sarah is also the Founder of the Townsville STEM Hub, a volunteer community organisation that has engaged over 15,000+ people in a range of student, teacher and community events. Sarah Chapman is Co-Chair of Women in STEMM Australia and a Board Member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. She is passionate about inspiring, engaging and empowering people through STEM. Sarah commits extensive portions of her own time lifting the profile of STEM education, by working with students, teachers and the broader community.

 

Sarah Chapman’s work with STEM Changemakers was awarded the Raising the Regions Award, 2025 by Women in Technology Australia. In January 2025, Sarah was part of the Australian Team at the Global Chemistry Education Program held in Beijing. In 2019, Sarah was awarded a Commonwealth Bank of Australia Teaching Award Fellowship. In 2018, Sarah was selected as one of ten national STEM Ambassadors by Science and Technology Australia and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. She was awarded a Barbara Cail STEM Fellowship in 2016, which involved international travel to research best practice in engaging young people into STEM. Sarah was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Secondary Science Teaching Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in 2013. In 2014 she was selected as a Queensland Government Science Champion. Sarah’s work has also been recognised with a prestigious Peter Doherty, Outstanding Teacher of Science Award in 2008 (Queensland Government) and an Australian Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009 (Teaching Australia).

From her early days in India with the L’Arche community to leading CRU's programs aimed at supporting leadership development and fostering inclusion, Margaret has seen firsthand the transformational power of empowering individuals to lead their own change.

With over a decade of experience as a registered nurse, Kate decided to pursue further studies to become a registered nutritionist. Her passion for understanding the effects of food on our bodies led her to create Healthy Little Eaters, a pioneering children's game that teaches kids to enjoy fruits and vegetables while learning about
their bodies. Kate's journey took a challenging turn with her own health,
undergoing extensive facial surgery. However, this experience only deepened her
commitment to helping others. Today, Kate dedicates her life to helping people
get back on track, boost their energy, and experience life in a whole new way
through proper nutrition and food choices.

Her passion for understanding the effects of food on our bodies led her to create Healthy Little Eaters, a pioneering children's game that teaches kids to enjoy fruits and vegetables while learning about
their bodies. Kate's journey took a challenging turn with her own health,
undergoing extensive facial surgery. However, this experience only deepened her
commitment to helping others. Today, Kate dedicates her life to helping people
get back on track, boost their energy, and experience life in a whole new way
through proper nutrition and food choices.

When Jeff Strully was visiting Queensland from Colorado in the 90's, he told a very powerful story from his own life situation as a parent. The example, given here in this audio, about two other women in their early twenties, is told in the same way:

The point of these two stories of young adults is that they are in fact the same person. How people are treated can depend on how they are seen and what roles and expectations are put on them.

Hence, when valued adults roles are pursued, adults with disabilities begin to get a real life.
