John 5:1-18 | What Do You Want?

What do you want? Have you ever stopped and asked yourself that question? What
do you want from life? You know, we are busy people. Busy with work. Busy with family.
Busy with school and hobbies and chores and vacations and buying stuff on Amazon. And there are various desires behind all those busy activities. We work because we want to eat. We study because we want to graduate. We head to Florida because we want to see the sun. But what’s the great desire behind all those smaller ones? What do you want more than anything else in your life, and for your life?

Here's another question, related, but a little more focused. What do you want Jesus to do for you? If Jesus appeared to you today, and asked you: “What would you like me to do for you”, what would you say? He has all power in His hand. He can do absolutely anything you ask. What would you ask Him to do? Would you ask Him to change your physical appearance? Resolve your financial trouble? Heal your marriage? Bring back a lost loved one? What do you want from Jesus?

John 4:43-54 | The Second Sign

Every great story involves a great conflict: some great battle to be fought, or a great danger to face or journey to complete. Whether it’s Lord of the Rings, The Old Man and the Sea, or Beauty and the Beast, conflict is essential to a great story. And in these scenes of great conflict there are great decisions that need to be made – decisions that have profound consequences. Frodo makes the fateful decision to travel through Moria, leading to the death of Gandolph. Belle decides to return to the cast le to rescue the Beast – leading to his transformation and true love. Decisions have consequences – sometimes eternal.

John 4:1-45 | The Savior of Sinners

This morning we’ve come to one of the great conversion stories of the Bible. This is, in fact, the longest recorded conversation between Jesus and another person in any of the gospels.
It’s a very important text for conservative Reformed churches in general, and for Harvest church in particular. You see, the vast majority of conservative, Reformed churches suffer from the same problem – we are poor at evangelism. We see very few adult baptisms. That doesn’t mean the Spirit of God is not at work – He clearly is. People are growing in the faith.
Young people are professing faith. Some have been truly converted here. But the fact remains that we see very few from outside of church circles come to faith – and I’m increasingly convinced that we can’t just be ok with that.

John 3:22-36 | The Supremacy of Christ

You may have noticed, in the first few chapters of John’s gospel, that John spends a lot of time explaining who Jesus is. He wants his readers to be perfectly clear about this. And so, he begins his gospel with those memorable words, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” All through these first 3 chapters John has been striving to show us the truth about who Jesus is.

His reason for doing this is quite clear. If Jesus really is the Son of God come to earth; if Jesus really is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world; if He really is the Messiah who has come to save and the King who will come to judge – then it is critically important that we understand and believe these things. This isn’t something you can afford to get wrong.

John 3:18-21 | The Verdict

What’s wrong with the world? It’s a very important question. We can all agree that
there is very much wrong in the world. For instance:
There is devastating poverty in the world. Although the number of deaths from
hunger is declining – it is estimated that 9 million died from starvation last year, many of them children under the age of 5. Millions of people are suffering under soul-crushing totalitarian regimes like North Korea, Eritrea and Afghanistan. Homicide continues to be one of the leading causes of death. 440,000 people died last year by an act of violence. Nearly quadruple the number of people killed in war. Sex-trafficking of young girls and women is on the rise around the world. We have recently been hearing of massive corruption in our governmental agencies.

These are just an example of the things that are wrong in the world. But what is the
underlying problem with the world? Why is the world this way?

happiness is to be convinced you are loved.”
I think that’s true. But it’s an interesting statement. Why would this be the case? Why, for instance, is romantic love so cherished and sought after? Why are we so desperate to be loved?

Have you ever had the experience of missing out on something you had hoped to do because you lacked the sufficient requirement? Maybe you were heading to Canada but when you got to the border you realized you had forgotten your passport and were turned away. Or you arrived at a concert but realized, at the entrance, that you had left your tickets at home. Or you went to the car rental desk but were turned back because your drivers license had expired. These are all experiences of being turned away because you lacked a necessary document. In our text this morning, Jesus tells us of a necessary experience if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven. Everyone who has this experience will be allowed to
enter. No one who lacks this experience will. We must be born again.

Well, we are about 2 weeks into the New Year and, I must confess, it doesn’t feel very new. In fact, the new year feels an awful lot like old one. Same old names in the news. Same old problems in the world. Same wars. Same disasters. Same diseases. Same crimes. And it’s much the same on a personal level: Same old aches in my body. Same old battles in my soul.
A lot of same old. Nothing really new.

But what if things actually could be new? I mean truly new. What if all the wickedness and brokenness the world and in our lives could be thrown out and replaced by something that is good and beautiful and strong and true? What if things, what if we, could really be made gloriously, completely, new?

John 1:14-18 | Grace Upon Grace

Our text this morning is about the glory of grace. But I’d like to begin by asking you
a question. What does “grace” look like? How would you define it? It’s a word we use all the time, at least when we talk about the gospel.

“By grace you have been saved through faith….”
“Where sin abounds, grace abounded all the more.”

We often say in the benediction: “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.”

But what does that mean? The reason I ask is because understanding grace is critical to understanding the gospel. Understanding grace is crucial for experiencing the Christian life. The clearer the concept of grace is to your mind, the more precious it will be to your soul. And the more precious it is to your soul the more powerful it will be to mold your life and anchor your hope and fill you with joy and peace in believing.

John 1:9-13 | Choices

“Choices”. You don’t need to be a sociologist to realize that the most influential factor in your life are the choices you make. There are the big choices of marriage partner, career, where you are going to live, etc. And there are the smaller but equally significant day to day choices of how you are going to spend your
time, how you are going to manage your finances, how you are going to treat people and deal with hardships. Those choices are the building blocks of your life. But the greatest choice that has the greatest significance, the greatest impact, is your choice of what you will do with Jesus, the baby born to Mary. No other choice comes close in terms of impact – for it will impact you eternally.

John 1:1-5 | God’s Gift of Life and Light

The first line of John’s gospel is one of the very best opening lines of all the books in the Bible. It reads like the opening chords of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. It’s dramatic, bold and memorable. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” It echoes the opening line of Genesis, the very first line in the Bible:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

John’s opening line tells us right at the start that this gospel is not about trivial things. It is about glorious things, divine and eternal things. It’s about God and Life and Light in a world gripped by darkness and death. Right at the start, we realize that this gospel is about the most weighty and profound and essential things. It’s about the eternal Word of God and the life of men.

Romans 16:25-27 | Now to Him

The book of Romans is Paul’s most extensive treatment of the defining love of his life - the good news of God’s salvation for lost sinners in Jesus Christ. Paul loved this message, this gospel. He loved it because this gospel had rescued him from his self-righteous blindness and bondage. This message was the power of God that rescued him from eternal hell and made him an heir of eternal glory. Paul concludes this marvelous letter with a doxology – a word of praise and worship to the God who has rescued us in Jesus Christ.

Romans 16:17-23 | A Warning and an Assurance

As we approach the end of this magnificent letter, Paul has a warning for the church. “Watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine/teaching that you have been taught. Avoid them.”
It’s the last imperative in the letter. The last command Paul has for them. It may seem strange to end such a wonderful, gospel letter this way. This letter is filled with towering gospel teaching and glorious salvation promises – why end it on such a down note? The change in tone seems so jarring that some commentators suggest that this portion of the letter is a later addition by some other author.

Romans 16:1-16 | The Fellowship of Kindred Hearts

Our text is a lesson in how to see the church of Jesus Christ. Let me ask
you, what do you see when you look around you or across the aisle? You probably just see a person filling a seat. If you were asked to describe them you would point to their age, their gender, their family affiliation, their personality, their particular gifts or intelligence. Those are the categories we would use. But Paul doesn’t “see” his fellow believers like that. He describes them with gospel categories. He uses words like “beloved, sister, fellow worker, first convert in Christ, beloved in the Lord, chosen in the Lord, etc.”. You see? Totally different categories. When Paul looked at the church, he saw a community built by Christ, united in Christ, and engaged in the mission of Christ – and he describes them that way.

Romans 15:20-33 | Gospel Desires

Last week we noted that, at first glance, these verses might seem to be pretty barren soil for a meaningful message. How much insight for practical living can there be in hearing about Paul’s travel plans? If you were reading this letter to a friend, and trying to quickly capture the essence of it, this is probably where you would go “yada-yada-yada”, until we get to end of the letter - ‘to the only wise God be glory forevermore. Amen.”

But these verses are filled with insight into a gospel-saturated mind and a mission-oriented life. You see, Paul is not just sharing information, he’s casting a vision. He’s not simply informing them of what he plans to do, he’s telling them what he expects them to do. You see, Paul intentionally lived his life as an example, a living illustration of what a gospelshaped life looked like. Paul routinely told the churches, ”imitate me as I imitate Christ” (1 Cor 4:16; 1 Cor 11:1; 2 Thess 3:9, Phil 3:17). Paul was unafraid to call his readers to imitate his life precisely because his life was molded by the magnificent truth of the gospel. His life was just the logical result of what he was convinced to be true concerning the love and
grace of God for sinners in Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:14-21 | What a Spiritually Healthy Church Looks Like

We have come to the final portion of Paul’s letter to the Romans.
Chapter 15:13 concluded the main body of the letter which was devoted to a glorious presentation of the gospel (1:18-ch8); a discussion of God’s dealing with the Jews (9-11); and a call to Christian obedience (12-15:13). The rest of the letter is devoted to personal matters – Paul’s explanation of his ministry, his plans to visit Rome, his plea for their prayers and personal greetings.

The question to ask is: Why did the Holy Spirit think we needed to hear this lengthy conclusion? It’s understandable that the Spirit wanted us to hear all the doctrine – but how is this final conclusion helpful? Why did the Spirit inspire these words? How is this meant to be helpful for us?

Romans 15:13 | How to Live in Hope

we have come to the conclusion of the main body of Paul’s letter to the Romans. And it is no surprise that it ends with a benediction, a blessing.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Hope is a universal human trait. We hope as naturally as we breathe. Paul Tripp, in his devotional, “40 Days of Hope”, says,
“Almost every day, you entrust your smallest and largest longings into the hands of something or someone with the hope that your longing will be satisfied. To be human is to hope.“

But what does it mean to hope? What is hope? In our language it is wish for some desire to be fulfilled. We say things like,” I hope the weather will be nice next week when we go camping”. Or, “I hope Mom brings home some ice cream”. Or, “I hope the stock market allows me to retire comfortably.” It’s a wish for a future blessing. And our hopes are often disappointed. The weather turns cold and rainy. Mom fails to deliver on the ice cream. The stock market fails to provide.

Biblical hope is much more present and confident and convinced. Biblical hope is certain of God’s blessing – both now and forever. Biblical hope is expressed well in Psalm 23:6
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
That’s Biblical hope.

Romans 15:1-6 | The Successful Church

I own several things that don’t work. I’ve got an old leaf blower that doesn’t work - I think the carburetor needs a good cleaning. I have a Mercury outboard with a stuck lower unit – doesn’t work. These items don’t function as they were intended to, they are incapable of doing what they were created to do. They don’t work.

That’s not that big of a problem when it comes to mechanical things. You can find someone to fix them or just replace them. But what if it’s a relationship that doesn’t work? Sometimes relationships get so broken that they are incapable of functioning as God meant them to function. A friendship falls apart by neglect or a marriage is shattered by a violation of trust and fidelity. There is so much more damage and loss when a relationship doesn’t work.

Romans 14:13-23 | Walking with the Weak

We are continuing Paul’s discussion of how to love each other in the face of differences and disagreements. There are many things we can disagree about and easily live with the difference. My wife likes mysteries, I like historical novels. I like coffee, she likes tea. But those are just differences of preference and they in no way interfere with the peace and joy of our relationship.
Disagreements over deeply held convictions are much more difficult. For instance, if a couple are deeply divided over the use of money, or the best way to discipline the children – as matters of personal conviction, those are really hard issues to navigate.
But the hardest issues of all are matters of religious conviction and conscience. When the disagreement is about things we believe are sinful – that can be a real obstacle to peace.

We can quickly judge motives and easily condemn. Disputes often result in derision, discord, and division. We have all seen it. We have all probably participated in it at one time or another.

Do you ever feel like you are sleepwalking through your Christian life? It feels like you are just going through the motions: you go to church, sporadically read your Bible if at all, you try to pray – but you don’t feel like you are growing in your sanctification. You aren’t experiencing the joy of salvation. You maybe wonder if you are a Christian at all.

Let me encourage you today by saying, what you are experiencing is a normal part of the Christian life. This is a pilgrimage – and it is common for pilgrims to become weary. If you are spiritually tired and discouraged in your Christian walk today, that’s a normal experience for God’s children. And the Apostle Paul has a good word to you.

Romans 13:1-7 | Responding to Rulers as Children of God

We’ve come to a tremendously relevant text for our time. We are a nation awash in political turmoil – and it is a marvelous opportunity for the church, as children of the Heavenly King, to show that we are a distinct people. Unfortunately, many Christians, on both the right and the left, are allowing themselves to become just another angry constituent group of their preferred political party – rather than being confident constituents of the kingdom of heaven. Believe it or not, the most important thing facing the church in this upcoming presidential election is not who wins, but how we live. How we behave as professing Christians.

This is not merely a discussion about how people should respond to government, it is specifically about how Christian’s should respond to governing authorities. Paul is writing this letter to the saints in Rome. He is writing this letter to people who have been justified by grace through faith, people who have been made new creations, people who are led by the Spirit of Christ, and heirs of eternal glory with Christ. It is written to people who have dual citizenship – earthly and heavenly. Their primary citizenship is in heaven – and that primary status is meant to direct their behavior on earth.

The text itself is fairly straightforward. There aren’t really any difficult words to interpret, confusing phrases to translate. The original readers would have had no difficulty understanding and applying what Paul is writing here by the inspiration of the Spirit. This is God’s will for His people while we dwell here on earth.

Romans 12:14-21 | A Life of Love in a World of Wrong

I’d like to begin with a true story of a missionary couple. Graham and Gladys Staines were a young couple from Australia who decided to dedicate their life to missionary service in Eastern India. They spent 34 years there, ministering the gospel particularly to lepers in the jungles of Orissa. In January of 1999, Graham took his two sons, Philip (11) and Timothy (6) to a Christian camp where Graham was going to speak. That night a mob of militant Hindu’s attacked, setting fire to the vehicle in which Graham was sleeping with his sons. When rescuers arrived, they found the charred remains of Graham with his arms around the bodies of his sons. He left behind his wife, Gladys, and a 13-year-old daughter, Esther.

Our text this morning calls us to love in a world where we will face a whole spectrum of hurts and wrongs from other people - from the minor wound of a friend’s snarky comment to the deepest betrayal of a spouse. God’s people experience injustices from petty gossip to abuse to persecution. That’s the world in which we live, and that’s the context in which we are called to live as followers of Christ and in view of Gods’ mercies.

It is precisely in the context of hard, painful relationships that we are called to bless those who seek to hurt us and to seek peace with those who’ve wounded us. This is where the unique love of Christ and the unique power of the gospel is revealed. This is where we shine as children of God in a dark world.

Romans 12:9-13 | The Christian Walk – Part 1

I’d like you to think about yourself when you were in HS. What did you wish you could change about yourself back then? Most of us wished for external things: we wished we were smarter or faster, or prettier or taller. The flaws we noticed about ourselves tended to be external flaws in our appearance or abilities.

Isn’t it interesting, as we grow older, as we mature as a Christian, how we begin to care more about the internal flaws? You start to realize how proud you are, how selfish you can be, how difficult it is for you to truly love people. And you increasingly desire change regarding those things - the internal things.
The great news of the gospel is that this is exactly what God is working to accomplish in us.

We are being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the words of Hebrews 13:21, God is “working in us that which is pleasing to Him.” Our text this morning gives us wonderful insight into what God is working to produce in our life. This is what God is making us to be.

Romans 12:3-8 | The Christian Life is Body Life

Intro: What does a Christian life look like? How would you define a Christian in terms of how they live? If you were to ask that question to people on the street - what do you think they would say? Some would probably define a Christion as a religious zealot – someone who is very concerned about living a religious life – going to church, reading their Bible and saying prayers. Other’s might define a Christian as a moralist – someone who is very concerned about keeping all the rules, avoiding sin.
H.L. Mencken, a famous writer for the Baltimore Sun in the 1930’s once derided
Christians of being guilty of “Puritanism”. He defined Puritanism as ‘the haunting fear that someone somewhere might be having a good time.’”

Romans 12:1-2 | Be Transformed

What does God want from you? Have you ever wondered that? I think most of us assume that God just wants us to be better. He wants us to be more joyful, more patient, more generous, etc. He wants us to behave – like our parents wanted when we were young. He wants us to be a better version of our present self.

But what if that weren’t true? What if the truth was far more magnificent and glorious? For instance, what if I told you that God’s desire wasn’t to make you a better version of yourself – but an entirely new kind of you all together. That God was at work with infinite wisdom and skill to make you into something breathtakingly beautiful, someone robed with honor and crowned with glory. Someone so beautiful that if you saw your future ‘you’ - you would be tempted to fall down and worship?

Romans 11:25-36 | The Depth and Wisdom of God

One of the questions I constantly ask as I prepare a sermon is this: What is this text
about? What’s the point? What is the key truth – and why does it matter? What difference should this truth make in our busy week-day lives? How does this truth help the person dealing with a difficult marriage, or wrestling through profound loss and grief? You get the idea.

So, what’s the key truth of Romans 11:25-33 – and what difference does it make? Paul is wrapping up his discussion concerning the problem of Jewish unbelief. He’s been at it for 3 chapters. We’ve been working our way through this for 3 months. How is this 1st century problem supposed to provide any practical help to us as 21st century Christians?

Romans 11:11-24 | The Kindness and Severity of God

What is the most common sin that causes people to be lost and go to hell? Have you ever thought about that? When men go to prison, they often share with other inmates why they are there. Do you know the number 1 reason for incarceration? Drugs. Second is guns and third is violent crime. But what is the most common cause for people to be lost? What sin? I would say “unbelief” is #1. But unbelief has different forms – and one of the most deadly forms is the sin of presumption. Jesus said that many will come to him on the last day and say, “Lord, Lord” – and they will point to all the good things they’ve done in Jesus’ name. And He will say, “depart from me, I never knew you.” They were guilty of the sin of presumption. They presumed their religious beliefs, and their religious actions would be sufficient to save them – and they presumed wrong. This was the reason Israel was lost. They presumed their ethnic pedigree and their attempts at keeping the law of Moses was all that was necessary for eternal life. And they presumed wrong.

Romans 11:1-10 | A Remnant of Grace

If you are a Christian, one of the most painful issues you will face is the reality of loved ones who do not believe in Christ. You know how Paul feels when he says, in 9:1-2, “I speak the truth in Christ, I am not lying, I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel.”
“Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.”
That’s how every child of God feels about loved ones who are not walking in faith. We want them to turn and believe and be saved. But sometimes, that doesn’t happen. Sometimes, loved ones refuse to turn and walk resolutely to their eternal death.

Romans 10:16-21 | Why Unbelief?

Why do people who’ve heard the gospel, reject the gospel? Have you ever wondered about that? I mean, it’s understandable why people who’ve never heard about Jesus don’t believe. How could they? We talked about that last week. But why is it that many people who do hear, who know the gospel story – refuse to embrace it? That’s a confounding thing. The gospel is the most incredible, glorious message in the whole world. It promises the most precious gift a person could ever receive. It is literally the difference between life and eternal death. And it is entirely free. Why would people reject such a glorious message?

I’d like to start by asking a simple question: Why bother with missions? I mean it’s hard, it’s expensive, it can be dangerous. It involves a lot of loss – particularly for the missionary and their family. And, if we are honest, the work seems to go on fairly well, whether we are engaged or not. I would guess that most of us don’t really think a lot about missions or missionaries. We’re busy with life and it’s just not something that weighs that heavily on us.

This episode, we come to some of the most beautiful words in the Bible.
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Isn’t that marvelous?? People don’t talk about getting saved much anymore. Have you noticed that? Getting saved is viewed as a fundamentalist idea. It’s for inner city missions, places like Mel Trotter where they still sing the old-time gospel hymns and call for old time gospel conversions. But sophisticated, middle- and upper-class Americans don’t get
saved. They get therapy and life-skills coaching. And good Dutch Reformed folk don’t talk about getting saved. We believe in salvation of course, but when is the last time someone asked you how you were saved? It's just not something you talk about in polite company.

Romans 9:30-10:4 | How to be Right with God

The gospel is the simple message that God sent His Son into this world to provide a righteousness we could never gain. His perfectly obedient life was offered up on the cross to atone for our sin and robe us in His own righteousness. This is the righteousness that saves. And that’s why Jesus is the only way to be saved. People scoff at the exclusive claims of Christianity. Why wouldn’t God accept good, moral, Buddhists, or Hindu’s or even agnostics? And the answer is simply this – Buddha can’t atone for your sin. Buddha can’t robe you in perfect righteousness. Only Jesus can! Jesus is the only way to be saved because only Jesus came from heaven. Only Jesus took on human flesh in order to bear human sin. Only Jesus perfectly obeyed the law of God in our place. Only Jesus died on the cross to suffer our damnation and rose from the grave for our justification. And the only way to receive this righteousness is by faith in Jesus. This is what the Jews didn’t understand. This is what they refused to accept.

Or Psalm 46, “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Maybe you have a favorite verse from the Ps’s: Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you. (Ps 55:22)
When I am afraid, I will trust in you. (Ps 56:3) The Psalms have been a tremendous source of comfort and encouragement for God’s saints throughout the ages. They are such an incredible comfort in times of grief or trial. Aren’t you glad to know that the Lord is your Shepherd?

In Romans 9, Paul is explaining a doctrine that inevitably makes natural man protest: loudly and vociferously. No natural man reads this and says, “Hey, I like this doctrine. This makes perfect sense to me.” The native, fallen instinct is to grumble and argue and talk back to God. Last week, in verses 14-18, Paul had dealt with one objection: if God elects Jacob and doesn’t elect Esau – before they were born and apart from them having done anything good or bad – well that’s not fair. The assumption is that God owes all men equally the opportunity to be saved. And Paul responds by saying, “No, He doesn’t.” God has the perfect, sovereign, freedom to give mercy to some and justice to others – and there is no injustice in it. God is free to act as God.“

I have to confess that I have been tempted to question God on this issue – most recently this past year as Randy was dying of cancer. It didn’t seem right that a man, in his prime, with his family still needing him, loved by so many – should be taken away just after his 53rd birthday. Some of you may be wrestling with this very thing this morning. Maybe God has given you a debilitating disease you never expected. Maybe you God hasn’t blessed you with something you dearly want – a spouse, a child, a job – things that most people enjoy, and yet God has kept this thing from you. And it doesn’t seem fair.

We get into some of the thorny issues, and yet some of the most precious issues as we deal with the sovereignty of God in election. And it's a truth that we really, really do well to get our arms around it. We need to learn how to be comfortable with a God who is beyond our understanding and be able to trust that he knows what he's about, even when we don't fully get it. And the doctrine of election profoundly helps us with that. And the reason that's important for us is because we will come to circumstances in our life where we don't understand the ways of God. And many people leave off believing in God in those times because they don't understand God and they charge God to be wrong. They've never learned how to simply be still and know that he is God, and that he knows what he's about. And the doctrine of election is a wonderful reminder and help to us in that.

Paul’s grand purpose as he writes to the church in Rome is to expound the glorious truth of the gospel in such a clear and convincing way that his readers will be filled with all with all joy and peace in believing (Rom 15:13). This letter is intended to help God’s people be thoroughly convinced that God is for us, that God loves us in Christ with an eternal, saving love, and that nothing can separate us from that love.

When Paul thinks about the great need of the world, the theme of condemnation is
always prominent in his mind. The objective, existential problem with the world is that this world exists under the condemnation of the law and the wrath of God. But this is also the subjective, experiential problem with each of us, as individuals. We are born, as children of Adam, under the judicial sentence of death and condemnation. We live our lives with the nagging realization that we fall short of the glory of God. We are not whole, not sufficient, not worthy, not enough. Mankind has been burdened with condemnation ever since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. It makes us anxious in life and afraid of death.

But Paul sees the gospel as God’s great resolution of our condemnation. Chapter 8
begins with that great gospel declaration – “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” And Paul comes right back to that theme here in verses 31ff and pounds it home with this magnificent challenge: “Who shall lay any charge against God’s elect. It is God who justifies – who is he that condemns?”

Another story of a sinner saved from eternal death by God’s infinite mercy and sovereign grace. That’s the story for all of us, isn’t it? God has accomplished

Romans 8:31-39 is one of the most God-exalting, soul-satisfying paragraphs in all of Scripture. The triumph of the gospel is manifested in five doubt-destroying and death-defying questions.

This morning we are going to see one key reason why some people who die "make it home" and why we can have great assurance that we shall make it as well. And it all has to do with the Holy Spirit as our Helper. Paul has been talking about the Holy Spirit a great deal in this chapter already. He mentions the Spirit 20 times in the first 27 verses! That’s because this a chapter on assurance – and the Holy Spirit is a key part of that story. If you remember, chapter 8 begins with that majestic declaration, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!” How can Paul be so sure?? Paul’s answer to that question is saturated with talk about the Holy Spirit.

Our text this morning is the perfect companion to the sermon on bitterness. It
acknowledges the reality and the pain of the brokenness around us. In that sense, it
validates our pain. But it places that pain in the panorama of the grand story of
redemption and in that great story of God making all things new – we find our pain giving way to hope and our bitterness transformed into anticipation. The genius of the gospel story is that God, in Christ, gives us a brand-new way of looking at the world around us, and a brand-new perspective of our own life. It gives us a birds-eye view of our life in this world so that we aren’t lost or disoriented by the pain of our immediate context.
