George Robinson II is Director of Supplier Diversity & Inclusion for UPMC. He joined UPMC in April 2018 to enhance strategic planning and execution in the UPMC Supplier Diversity Program. George brings to this position over 20 years of experience in Business and Engineering Administration, Government Management and Diverse Business Development.

Prior to joining UPMC, George was responsible for the creation of Development (Real Estate) Services Group as Manager of Development Services for The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA).

Before relocating to Pittsburgh in 2013, he last served as Deputy Director of Public Utilities for the City of Toledo, Ohio and managed the city’s $521 million Federal Consent Order engineering and construction program (The Toledo Waterways Initiative).

George presently serves on several local boards, including Life’s Work (Board Chair), Provident Charter Academy, Rotary Club of Pittsburgh (President), Riverside Center of Innovation, Women’s Business Entrepreneurship Council (WBEC)-East (Second Vice-Chair), Eastern Minority Supplier Development Council (EMSDC), Laurel Highlands Boy Scouts of America, and the Pittsburgh Historical Landmarks Foundation, among others.

He is graduate of the inaugural cohort of The Advanced Leadership Initiative (TALI) Executive Leadership Academy held in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and has completed Executive Education studies at Georgetown University with LEAD360.

As director of communications and brand for Duquesne Light Company (DLC), Hollie develops and shares stories to help educate, inform, and inspire their more than 1,800 employees and 600,000 customers in the Pittsburgh region.

Prior to her role at DLC, she was vice president, culture and brand ambassador for WordWrite, a public relations and digital marketing agency. During her eight years there she counseled clients on bridging the gap between truth and misunderstanding, especially in times of crisis.

In addition to her client responsibilities, she was accountable for the firm’s sales and marketing efforts where she collaborated with the entire team to showcase their expertise in the B2B space.

Before joining the agency world, she held various PR and marketing positions, including at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Allegheny Energy and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.

Additionally, she was recognized by Pittsburgh Magazine as a Woman & Business honoree in 2021 and in 2013 as a 40 Under 40 honoree—an annual recognition program managed by Pittsburgh Magazine and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP).

Outside of the office, she enjoys walking the river trails with her chocolate lab and golden retriever, kayaking, reading, crafting at home, vintage shopping, and inspiring her children to chase their dreams.

There’s a quote that goes, “Nothing happens to you. Everything happens for you.”

Meet our guest for Episode 127, Thomas Exler. Thomas embodies the spirit of those words. He was born with a rare birth defect called bladder exstrophy. When Thomas counts the many blessings in his life…he includes it. Because of it, and on the whole the blessings have gratefully outweighed all the negatives he has had to personally endure.

Thomas is an amazing, if not heroic human being.

So, what is bladder exstrophy?

The word Exstrophy is derived from the Greek word ekstriphein, which literally means to “turn inside out.” Bladder exstrophy is a malformation of the bladder, in which the bladder and related structures are turned inside out. The skin of the lower abdominal wall that normally covers the bladder also does not form properly and is separated, thus exposing the inside of the bladder to the external world. If you imagine a balloon that has been split and opened up so that the inside of the balloon is visible, you will have a picture of what has happened

In early 2010, Thomas founded a group called Courage to Shine, (http://www.courage-to-shine.org/) which will eventually be a patients awards program as well as a website that will feature individuals who were born with genitourinary birth defects, and have also grown up to become amazing role models as adults.

Although Thomas never asked to have a stoma, no person has asked before getting sick, but Thomas believes that having a stoma should never stop anyone from doing what they want to do or accomplish in life.

He believes that, “Life is wonderful, and it is not about the gifts you are given in life, it really is about how you use those gifts that is important.”

Our guest this week on the podcast is Lannette McWilliams. She a native to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has a rich family history being deeply rooted in our area. Her and her husband have a sixteen-year-old son and their dog Luna, a black Lab/Weimaraner mix.

Lannette’s ancestors served in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, landing in Pittsburgh and were awarded property for their service by King Edward III right here in Pittsburgh. Due to her ancestral heritage, she an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She has a strong connection to the veteran’s community including her longstanding involvement with the Veterans Community Partnership.

Lannette holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Communications with a minor in Art. She completed her MBA in 2023, with dual majors in Business and Marketing, while working full-time at COhatch in Pittsburgh.

Before joining COhatch, she spent most of her career as a leader in healthcare, primarily in hospice care. During her career, she has directed diverse teams across different fields. She also has extensive experience in marketing, operations, finance, fundraising, business development, event planning, and team leadership, which she continues to utilize in growing COhatch in Pittsburgh.

Second Chance at Life with Rodney Little | The James Protin Podcast

“All the Kings horses, and all the Kings men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”

I’m sure you recognize that well-known nursery rhyme from your childhood but our guest this we experienced it in real life.
While riding his motorcycle, he was the victim of a horrific hit and run accident that left him lying in the street broken and literally dead.

Rodney was brought back to life at the scene and literally put back together After being life flighted to a trauma unit in Pittsburgh.

But that’s only a part of Rodney‘s story.

Rodney has over 20 years of dog training experience. His love of dogs stems from early childhood when he got his first German Shepard growing up in a small farm town in Pennsylvania.

But it was Sarge, a Black Shepard/ Lab mix he adopted in 2012, that led him to his dog training business.

Sarge had been abandoned and later taken to a kill shelter before he convinced Rodney to take him home. He did not know much to start but through hard work and dedication Sarge became well trained dog. After mastering all of his basic commands it was time to find Sarge a job so they assisted the State Police with missing person cases.

Later Sarge was recertified and trained as a mobility service dog, then also trained and recertified as a Top Dog Therapy Dog.
Finally, in 2014, Rodney took the leap of faith and started Youngwood Top Dog Services. Having both a police and military background he was excited to start and grow this new dog training business. He left his career in retail to open Youngwood Top Dog Services and now enjoys fulfilling his passion for dogs by getting to work with them every day.

Cradle of Quarterbacks with Will Toprani | The James Protin Podcast

After a promising freshman season at Ringgold HS as a varsity starting quarterback and letterman, Will transferred to Central Catholic (Pittsburgh) to continue his athletic and academic career.

Will is the first player in WPIAL history to serve as a quarterback at the high schools that produced both Dan Marino and Joe Montana.

Will is an elite level talent who intends to play in college. As an honors student, he has drawn interest from the US Naval Academy and several Ivy League schools so far.

Following his midyear transfer to Central Catholic, Will earned a spot on the Vikings' Freshman baseball team, being selected captain and starting every game in centerfield, where he had a perfect fielding rating on the season. On the baseball side, he has played for the prestigious Pittsburgh Premiere travel baseball club in tournaments across the country, and for Charleroi American Legion, Ringgold Fall Varsity baseball, and several community teams.

He trains at 2/10ths Speed & Agility and competes at both QB Country and the Manning Passing Academy, receiving skill instruction from 2025 NFL first round picks Drake Maye and Bo Nix, and current college players, including WVU's Garrett Greene, and NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning.

In the offseason, he's the signal caller for Nike PA Elite 7v7 football where he led his team to the national championship tournament in Dallas, Texas, and attends college prospect camps. Regarded as a natural and skilled leader, Will's positive influence is apparent on the field, in the classroom and in the community, as he has assisted coaching youth baseball for several years.

Brian Carothers is a 1998 Montour HS Graduate living in Moon Twp with his wife and 2 kids.

Ed Troup is a 1998 Belle Vernon HS Graduate living in Cecil Twp with his wife and 2 kids.

The fellas met and graduated in 2002 with a Broadcasting degree from Point Park University. They hosted a weekly radio show together, Brian/Ed/Ed/Brian. They have been best friends since. Brian has been a full-time REALTOR for 14 years. Ed has been a full-time REALTOR with Brian, we are a team for 9 years now together.

Independently they are just a couple ultra cool Pittsburgh dads, but it’s when they come together that the magic happens. Like Batman and Robin, Martin and Lewis, and peanut butter and jelly this dynamic duo becomes oneBURGH!

Brian acquired oneBURGH in early 2023. He owns/runs it. Ed is the sports director since August 2023.

Building Bridges with Ebtehal Badawi | The James Protin Podcast

Ebtehal Badawi, an esteemed expressionist artist and dedicated culture explorer, embodies the transformative power of art. Her fervent belief in art as a potent healer and a bridge-builder has been a source of inspiration for many. Through the Pittsburgh Builds Bridges project, she has crafted art installations that not only unite the community but also promote love and acceptance.

Ebtehal's remarkable journey and her capacity to effect change are truly moving, ready to inspire anyone who encounters her story.

Ebtehal Badawi was born in Saudi, Arabia. Ebtehal now resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since she was in 5th grade, she always knew that she wanted to be an artist. However, she took a different path and got a bachelor’s degree in biology from King Abdul-Aziz University.

Following that, she earned a master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Her career path also included working as a teacher assistant. Still, she always felt that something was missing. After taking an interest in art therapy, she took the required classes in Art and Psychology to pursue that specialty and it is still ongoing.

During her journey, she joined the Malian Art Institute and learned different techniques in painting. The first thing everyone notices about her art is that it is colorful and uplifting. Her art has a big influence on people. She designed a poster for anti-bullying and anti-racism which was posted in different schools in the Pittsburgh area. This was aimed to help kids understand the power of unity. She was also a part of different art shows in Pittsburgh.

Ebtehal is not just an artist but is a writer and a photographer as well. She enjoys going and spending time in nature and connecting with Mother Earth and writing about her experience. Her goal as an artist is to create art that would uplift peoples’ souls and connect with more artists to share the beauty and the magic of art.

Ebtehal Badawi is also a 2022 Pittsburgh TEDx speaker.

Pittsburgh Builds Bridges is a community outreach movement that encourages diversity, inclusion, and connection within the community using simple actions, the stroke of a paint brush, dialogue, and awareness.

Ebtehal created this movement because her son endured bullying as a young child. Unfortunately, according to the National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice, 20 percent of students ages 12-18 experience bullying. Due to this, she began teaching acceptance and love to youth and adults through painting across Pittsburgh.

Along with bullying, Ebtehal quickly realized that many children and adults felt like outsiders in their community because of their race, gender, language barrier, beliefs, etc. She decided that Pittsburgh Builds Bridges was not just a social movement for anti-bullying but was also about inclusion, diversity, acceptance, and cultivating community.

Pittsburgh Builds Bridges has curated events that have brought together over 4,000 children and adults to create murals that embody unison and harmony and discuss how to build bridges in their communities. These murals, dialogue, and awareness have taken place in all levels of grade schools from elementary to high schools, public and private.

Inside Team USA’s World Championship Journey | The James Protin Podcast

Our guests for Episode 118 are three young student athletes from our region, Caleb Horner, Collin Moffett, and Anthony Bonari. They are members of the Team USA U16 Ball Hockey tram that is traveling to Slovakia in a few weeks to compete in the world championships.

Caleb and Collin are from Belle Vernon and in the 11th grade a Belle Vernon Area HS, while Anthony is from West Newton and attends Yough Area HS. These guys are no strangers to winning.

In addition to last year‘s bronze medal, All three play other “mainstream“ sports. Caleb has been a member of the BVA football team that won back-to-back WPIAL and PIAA championships, Collin is a member of the Ringgold PIHL ice hockey championship team. Anthony is also a standout on the ice.

You may know the sport as street or dek hockey. By whatever name, its popularity is growing around the world. All three our guests were members of the 2023 team that brought home a Bronze Medal from the Czech Republic.

The 2024 edition of Team USA, led by Head Coach Willie Rennebeck and General Manager Ryan Shannon, will compete for the 2024 U16 World Junior Men's Ball Hockey Championships July 4-7 at Niké Arena in Žilina, Slovakia.

The International Street & Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) is the global governing body of Street & Ball Hockey. Headquartered and registered in Prague, Czech Republic as a non-profit organization. The organization has 55 national associations from around the eorkd as members.

Ball Hockey is a team sport and a close variation of the popular sport of ice hockey. With origins and rules tightly connected to ice hockey, the major differences are that the game is played on foot and a solid surface, most often sport-court or concrete, and a specifically designed orange ball is used instead of a puck.

All ISBHF official events are held in full sized hockey arenas. Check out this interesting conversation with three of our own young men who are representing our country and competing on a global stage.

Beyond her commitment to the Pittsburgh real estate landscape, Jaime is a dedicated martial artist with a journey that commenced in 1996 with Muay Thai Kickboxing and Boxing. Through relentless determination, she achieved the title of International Muay Thai champion in 2000, in addition to other regional championships.

Jaime also holds the prestigious position of an Official Judge with the Pennsylvania and West Virginia State Athletic Commissions.
In 2016, she launched the Kicks4kids program, a complimentary martial arts initiative focused on fitness, self-defense, empowerment, and life skills. Jaime’s latest endeavor is a nonprofit dedicated to stopping human trafficking, rape, and child abuse.

All of her roles do just that:

As an account manager for Vitalant (formerly Central Blood Bank), she connects with people to host and support blood drives.

As the co-founder of People Connectors, she connects good people for good events in cool spaces. All events include a community component, highlighting local non-profit agencies.

As a 30-year addict to Jazzercise and 10 years as an instructor, she connects people for fun, energy etic workouts.

As an independent consultant for Scout & Cellar, she educates people about and connects them to good, clean-crafted wines and coffees.

Sydnee is ever hopeful, optimistic, and spiritual. She starts each day with: “How may I serve?” and “Let me be an inspiration to others.”

She has worked in accounting, for an ad agency, management roles in a direct-mail media company, marketing manager for a start-up building efficiency company, marketing roles in the healthcare industry, agent and advisor in the insurance/financial industry, and executive director for a chamber of commerce. Her entrepreneurial ventures include leading a team selling wine with a cause and starting two businesses: The Grammar Nerd and Whirlwind Events.

English was always her favorite subject in school. It seemed fitting that she and her husband bought their home from her fourth-grade English teacher, her first real influencer and the early makings of The Grammar Nerd venture.

She is high adventure when it comes to eating. She will try anything but will not eat any kind of melon or cucumber. She loves wine – red, white, pink, port, and bubbles. When she’s at the computer, there is always a candle burning and music playing.

She is one of three sisters, with a brother and sister who left this world far too young. Her mom is her best friend, biggest fan, and every morning sends Syd a GIF message to start her day.

Some of her proudest accomplishments are getting her MBA from Katz Graduate School of Business at Pitt, learning to drive a stick at age 29, and learning to play the drums in the last two years – all with the suggestion, help, and support of her husband, Buddy.

Sydnee is right at home with all of her worlds coming together, beautifully feeding her soul and making her heart sing. She’s glad to have so many good people with her on this journey.

Our guest for Episode 113 of the podcast is Virginia Monaghan. Virginia is a Mon Valley kid, born to a loving Italian-American family in Donora, Pennsylvania.

She graduated for Donora High School in 1964 and went on to California State Teachers College with a Bachelors Degree in secondary education in 1968. Then this Mon Valley kid set off on a more than 30 year career teaching a couple generations of Mon Valley kids at Monessen (PA) High School.

It was at California State Teachers College, where she was the Sigma Tau Gamma White Rose Queen and Miss Torch for the Mon Valley United Way, that she caught the eye of her husband. They were married in 1968 and remained so for 46 years until his unexpected passing in 2014.

Virginia loved teaching English and Public Speaking at Monessen High School. During her career, she sponsored the newspaper, performing arts group and the broadcasting club. She received three "Great Ideas" grants and was listed in "Who's Who in America's Teachers."

Virginia has one daughter, Melanie, a cohost for a Pittsburgh radio morning show and two granddaughters; Quinn, a freshman at Penn State (main) and Brecklynn an eighth-grader in the Belle Vernon Area School District.

She didn’t rest on the laurels of her distinguished career. After her husband's untimely death, I started a Foundation, a (501(c)3) nonprofit to keep his legacy alive. The foundation helps underprivileged children and has been extremely successful.

Virginia has written one children's book and is working on two more. She lives the mantra…you’re never too old and it’s never too late. In her spare time, this amazing woman enjoy ls walking, reading poetry, gardening and movies.

This was a delightful conversation with a dedicated educator, wife, mother, and grandmother who has walks in faith and and continues to give back to her beloved Mon Valley community.

Kate Crawford is a nonprofit leader, fierce advocate, digital creator, and more importantly, wife and mother.

Kate is no stranger to struggle and tragedy in her life. Kate's journey to motherhood led her to find a hope that would carry her through some of her hardest days. All four of her children were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit right after birth due to different complications. Her first daughter sadly died just 3 days after being born. Her twin daughters would just need some help to grow strong. Due to complications with her last pregnancy, she and her son nearly died. As a result of her son being premature, he suffered many life-altering complications.

Kate never wanted a family to feel alone during such a trying time in their lives so she and a few of her close friends created the organization, Project Sweet Peas. Project Sweet Peas quickly grew to become a national non-profit organization coordinated by volunteers, who through personal experience have become passionate about providing support to families of premature or critically ill infants and to those who have been affected by pregnancy and infant loss.

Kate served as the President of Project Sweet Peas until 2013 when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer at just 28 years old. The cancer entirely covered her liver, both breasts, shoulder, ribs, thoracic and lumbar spine, and completely covered her pelvis. A diagnosis this severe gave her a less than 15% chance of surviving for 5 years. With little hope, Kate started a "Mommy Bucket List". Her twins were 4 and her son just turned 3 when she was diagnosed so her list was all the things she still wanted to do with her children, things she wished to do, and experiences she had hoped to see achieved.

Each year that passed after Kate's diagnosis brought more optimism but it brought many health challenges as a result of intense cancer treatments. Kate found out she had two cancer-causing genetic mutations and has faced three other primary cancers. In the past 11 years, Kate has had 179 treatments, a double mastectomy, oophorectomy, gall bladder surgery, lumbar puncture, radiation, broken bones from treatment and cancer, fluid buildup in her brain, blood clots in my lungs, hip surgery and heart failure.

One thing Kate didn't do was lose hope. Just as she did with Project Sweet Peas, Kate dived into the breast cancer nonprofit community, raising nearly $100,000 for breast cancer research and local organizations. She has traveled the country sharing her story to advocate for better patient-centered care practices in healthcare. She works closely with local breast cancer community leaders to ensure Pittsburgh continues to be a pioneer in research and patient care.

When Kate is working as a cancer advocate you will find her volunteering her time elsewhere. Kate remains an active volunteer with Project Sweet Peas and spearheaded the global initiative, NICU Awareness Month. Kate volunteers for as many things that involve her kids as she can. She and her family still work on checking things from the bucket list. She has a large following on TikTok, where she brings humor to her diagnosis. She loves being an artist and usually spends her free time in her studio at home crafting.

Winner has been in media sales and management her entire career, including The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, KDKA-Radio, Lamar Outdoor Advertising and Pittsburgh Magazine.

Rachel has built an invaluable network of thought and business leaders in Pittsburgh, and has coupled that with volunteer work for various nonprofit entities including, The American Heart Association, Junior Achievement, The Allegheny Conference/ Athena Host Committee, The Community Liver Alliance, and most recently sits on the board of the Media Association of Pittsburgh.

Rachel holds a B.A. in Communications & Advertising from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She resides in the Wexford/Pine Township area with her 16 year old daughter Abigail and her 12 year old son, Nicholas.

Caroline Boyce moved to Pittsburgh from London, England at the age of six and has considered herself a Pittsburgh native ever since. She began her collaboration with Ryan Shazier in September of 2020, to lead the establishment of the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation.

With a BA from Connecticut College and an MA from Cornell University, Caroline specializes in assisting nonprofits that are starting up or going through significant transitions. She is a Certified Board Source Nonprofit Governance Consultant, a graduate of the Support Center’s Interim Executive Director program, and a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh.

Caroline’s outside interests include cooking, architecture and Pittsburgh sports teams. A long-time Steelers fan, Caroline is delighted to be part of Ryan Shazier’s team to advocate for the victims of Spinal Cord Injuries and advance the agenda of this new and dynamic organization.

Justin is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University and his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he represented indigent clients in Elder Law matters as part of the Sikov Elder Law Clinic.

Justin is a member of both the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and Pennsylvania Association of Elder Law Attorneys (PAELA).

Our guest for Episode 106 is Linda Long, currently the Owner/Designer of Long Awaited Design LLC, a full service residential Interior Design company. She labels herself as a late bloomer because she didn’t go to college until her two children were in school and became a Registered Nurse at age 36.

She worked for 28 years as a Nurse working in multiple disciplines, including Cardiac, Critical Care, Oncology Research, and Case Management. She then decided to totally shake up her world by changing career paths and returning to school at the New York Institute of Art and Design majoring in Interior Design at the age of 60.

After completing her degree in Interior Design, she started her business in 2016 at the age of 65. She works with homeowners in all stages of their lives, from the first-time homeowner working on that fixer-upper to the older homeowner looking to downsize.

In January 2021 Linda was diagnosed with Stage II Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. After surgeries and months of chemotherapy, radiation, physical therapy, and now ongoing adjuvant treatment, she is currently cancer free.

During this time, she continued to be involved in many organizations doing philanthropic work when possible. In 2022 she was the co-chair of the annual Pink Pamper Bubble Ball hosting over 400 people to raise money for women in Southwest Pennsylvania with a cancer diagnosis.

She has volunteered with many non-profit and charitable organizations to help raise money and awareness of their cause. She is an active member of The Southwest Regional Chamber of Commerce where she was named Woman of the Year in 2022; POSH-Power of the South Hills; People Connectors; Inspired Women; PEEL-Pittsburgh’s Elevated and Emerging Leaders as a founding member; and is on the Board of Directors for Face2Face Healing, a local non-profit charity.

Linda has also appeared on several Podcasts and spoken at women’s groups about her career and her life journey, encouraging women to never give up on their dreams and to practice self-care and get their mammograms for early cancer detection.

Our guest for Episode 105, Jamie Holmes Ward founded Jamie’s Dream Team in 2005 when she was just eighteen (18) years old.

The mission of Jamie’s Dream Team is to offer hope when there is little, to ease the burden caused by serious illness, injury, disability, trauma, or catastrophic events, and to finally celebrate individual differences by acknowledging dreams as possibilities.

Jamie was born with a rare disorder known as V.A.T.E.R. Syndrome. Children born with V.A.T.E.R. Syndrome can have congenital abnormalities of the vertebrae, lower intestine, trachea, esophagus, and kidneys.

In Jamie’s case, she was born with abnormalities in all those areas. She has had over forty-five (45) surgeries and/or medical procedures since birth, including surgeries to reconstruct her esophagus, trachea, and lower intestine, and to fuse several vertebrae in her spine.

Despite the pain and suffering that she has, and will continue to endure, she hasn’t let any of it stop her. She’s a tireless advocate and a devoted mother to her daughter Daisy, and her heart will always be with others who are suffering.

A Hero's Journey: Eric McElvenny | The James Protin Podcast

Eric McElvenny is one of us, a western PA kid…Belle Vernon to be exact. Eric graduated from Belle Vernon Area High School and the United States Naval Academy. Eric served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

Eric deployed three times as a Marine and on his final tour, an incredible experience in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, was wounded during combat action by stepping on an IED.

That’s where this story really begins…

Eric suffered the amputation of his right leg below the knee, a life-changing opportunity that began his next journey. Yes…opportunity.

Lying in a hospital bed, recovering from the amputation, inspiration hit him hard. Eric made a promise to himself to run an Ironman Triathlon.

On his journey from that hospital bed in southern California to the finish line in Kona Hawaii, he realized that the challenge and adversity he was up against and the practical techniques he used to reach the finish line could be used against the challenges we all entertain.

He now travels the country speaking to and inspiring people to embrace their challenges.

Our guest for Episode 92 is Karen Scuilli. Karen’s heroic journey started with a diagnosis of parotid gland cancer in May 2012. She was left emotionally, physically, and spiritually unable to adapt to the altered self-image on the journey of survivorship.

She experienced many changes and losses causing her to distance herself from supportive family, friends, church, and the community. She asked, “Why did this happen to me?” and “How will I move forward?” This experience has given her a unique perspective on life.

Face2Face Healing creates this network and provides the opportunity for individuals with a life changing illness to meet and share their stories with others who understand.

Her goal for her organization is to encourage individuals, their families, healthcare professionals, and educators to come together in an innovative healing and supportive network.

Karen has spent 36 years as a nurse, case manager and clinical consultant. She helped develop the Case Management Program at Washington Hospital (PA) in 1997. She was on the Case Management Task Force under the VP and Executive Director of Patient Care Services at Washington Hospital in 1999.

In 2006, Karen moved to Highmark as a national case manager. After a short time at Highmark, she became Supervisor for National and Western Regional Conflicts Case Management, where she led a team of 60 employees. In 2009, Karen advanced to the position of Highmark Clinical Consultant where she was responsible for analyzing large corporate accounts to establish plan-of-care solutions that improved large employer healthcare. Most recently, Karen has been utilizing her skillset as a hospice case manager.

In addition to her clinical and administrative experience, Karen is a survivor, having gone through treatment for head and neck cancer, allowing her to understand from personal experience the needs of individuals diagnosed with a life changing disease.

She has a master’s degree in nursing and Business focusing on Healthcare Administration. Most recently, Karen has utilized her case management and nursing skills for hospice care.

For nearly 20 years, Katie Stern has helped construction firms grow through marketing and rebranding strategies. Then, in 2016 the unthinkable happene…she lost her son Toby, at 12 weeks old, two sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Struggling to find resources to process their own grief, Katie and her husband, Dan, started The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation with a mission of providing resources and support to parents experiencing grief from the death of a child, while educating on the importance of safe sleep practices for infants and bringing awareness to sudden infant death syndrome.

The 501(c)3 is currently raising money to build a grief retreat center in Western Pennsylvania to serve bereaved families across the U.S.

As a grieving mother, Katie is passionate about helping others with grief and infant loss and finds comfort in being able to offer insight and guidance to those struggling with how to best comfort someone coping with a major loss.

Her impactful speaking style makes her message around ‘growing through grief’ empowering and transformative. Her mission is to bring mothers, fathers, siblings, and extended family members hope in the midst of heartbreak and grief while providing the tools and resources to help grievers experience joy in their lives once again.

Over the past 60 years, NEED has been a pacesetter to overcome historical disparities that have left minorities and the underserved at a tremendous disadvantage. But if you ask Matt about the titles he holds dear, it's 'father to Payton and Nolan' and 'husband to Kim' that stand out prominently.

Leadership is in Coach Humbert's DNA. He's not only a pillar of strength and direction himself but also surrounds himself with experienced men of integrity—individuals who are leaders in their own spheres.

For Coach Humbert, leadership isn't about a title; it's about creating more leaders. Ignorant to finances she struggled being a single mother, college student, and escaping domestic violence. Ray Nell started to figure life out and discovered the power of couponing and saving. Her extreme couponing habit generated thousands of stockpile items such as feminine hygiene products, diapers, soap, laundry detergent, and plenty of other necessities that single mothers need to survive.

She began giving away her stockpile to mothers in her community while catching public transportation and never stopped.

Ray Nell encourages all single mothers to "never lose faith", due to their circumstances and never settle for less. She moves souls and lights fires in women who once lost hope. I had the pleasure of interviewing Luca Pandolfi for Episode 76 of the Podcast. Luca has been developing a system for converting biomass into sustainable gasoline that works with existing cars and infrastructure.

The business is called Woodland Biomass Innovations, and it promises a localized circular production process for making gasoline from tree residuals, starting with the proposed first facility in Tioga County, PA.

In the episode, we talk about Luca’s belief that smart business and sustainability are two sides of the same coin: that creating efficient circular systems will benefit profitability and the environment at the same time.

We go on to discuss how Woodland BIO is a distillation of this philosophy into a business that can deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits to the communities it works in.

This is all without mentioning Luca’s fascinating background, having grown up in different parts of Africa and Italy, giving him a uniquely international perspective in the work he does, which we also discuss throughout the podcast.

Our guest for Episode 62 of the podcast is Harry Lorusso. Harry is an outlier. I know what you’re thinking…what’s an outlier?

Merriam-Webster defines an outlier this way: a person, thing, or fact that is very different from other people, things, or facts, so that it cannot be used to draw general conclusions.

Harry is an athlete. He ran in the Ultra Race of Champions, April 29th…finishing as the 7th overall in the mens division. Then Harry followed that up May 1st by running and finishing the Pittsburgh Marathon…his first ever.

But this isn’t what makes Harry an outlier…

Harry is an outlier because, he did these things despite March 22, 2019. That’s the day he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an incurable brain cancer. GBM as it’s known, is a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor. The prognosis with this disease is generally not good.

Harry is, among other things, the founder of The Outlier Fund. Now that his treatment is finished, he has created a platform to show others impacted by GBM that despite the grim statistics…there is hope.

Harry is not only surviving with GBM, he’s thriving. His message resonates with many of us whose lives have been touched by cancer. But the most important takeaway from our conversation is that whatever adversity you’re facing…you too can be an outlier.

Harry embodies the Five Pillars of Live. Love. Learn. Pray. Inspire. It’s an honor to know him and support his journey.

The diagnosed, family, friends, and caregivers who support them are welcome to join Cancer Bridges and receive the social, emotional, and informational tools they need.

Quinton is a junior football player at Belle Vernon Area high school, in Pennsylvania. He is a well known 5 star athlete who dreams to make it to the NFL. Martin is #1 recruit in Pennsylvania, and in the top 30 players around the nation.

One of his biggest achievements was leading the Belle Vernon Leopards to winning the state championship. His other achievements include 2024 MaxPreps All American , KDKA Super 7, & being one of the finalist for Mr. PA Football.

He has been a top recruit since he was a freshman in high school. Offers have came in from Power 5 schools such as Penn State, PITT, Texas, Miami, and Ohio State.

With the support of his family, Quinton looks forward to the next step of his journey.

We shuffled the deck a little for this week’s episode. We received a call from our good friend Tom Mosser regarding an event he is putting together April 1st at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh.

We visited 412 Studios in Etna for Episode #55 of the Podcast. You may remember Tom from our show featuring his “Really Big Faces” Exhibit last year. He is organizing an event he calls “Make Your Marc” calling on local artists to create their own artwork about Marc Fogel.

Marc Fogel, a 1980 Butler Senior High School graduate, was detained in Russia at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport in August 2021 with slightly more than a half-ounce of medical marijuana. After a trial, he was sentenced to 14 years in a Russian prison.

The event calls on over 100 Pittsburgh creatives create their own original work about Fogel that will be on display in the Brightspace Room at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh. The intent is to draw attention to Vogel’s plight.

Episode #51 of the podcast is a special one for me. Our guests this week are Ashley Reed and Tyler Watts, two amazing young women. Both Ashley and Tyler are engineers with GPI.

Ashley Reed is a Cleveland native with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Akron. Upon graduation, she relocated to West Virginia to work as an engineering consultant helping communities maintain safe and reliable drinking water and wastewater systems.

Ashley is a Registered Licensed Professional Engineer. With her role at GPI growing more forward facing, client focused, she had to step outside her comfort zone and accept more leadership responsibility.

Tyler Watts is a Project Manager in the water resources group at GPI. After 6 years in the water resources industry, she has collected significant experience in construction management for water and wastewater infrastructure.

Born and raised in the northside of Pittsburgh, PA, Tyler grew up around the construction business. Her family encouraged creativity and sketching became one of her first loves.

Tyler played varsity basketball while attending Perry Traditional Academy and went on to complete a B.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Toledo. As a queer black woman, she is committed to representing and elevating minorities in her industry.

Our guest for Episode #46 is Ron Mozer, Mayor of the City of Monessen, Pennsylvania. Unlike his predecessors, Mayor Mozer arrived in Monessen from Alamogordo, New Mexico by way of Pueblo, Colorado.

But don’t let the fact that Ron is a transplanted Monessen Greyhound fool you. Like his predecessors, he loves this small city straddling the Monongahela River.

Mayor Mozer’s belief that if you always keep a positive attitude, hold God in front of you and do what you know is right has been proven by his ability to unite a city council that had been fractured and chaotic at best. In this Mayors Monessen, there is nothing that can’t be accomplished together.

Since 1981, Ron Mozer has been President of Crystalline Technology, a manufacturer of devices that provide satellite communications to remote facilities in the oil and gas industry. In this role, Ron has been involved in all aspects of the business including operations, development, management, equipment manufacture, sales and service.

For the first time in recent memory, Monessen is a city that is working together in unison with council towards the goal of “Equality and Prosperity for all”. Mayor Mozer maintains a strong belief in the community and work closely with all community leaders and residents in addressing many of the issues facing this proud city.

In April, 2019, then 6-year old Jace won his first race in Lebanon, Missouri, and he hasn’t looked back. He raced the Hoosier Arenacross Series and the Missouri State Championship Series with multiple Top 5 finishes.

In 2021, Jace was Selected for the KTM Jr Supercross at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida where he took home the 3rd Place Trophy,

When his family was posted to Minot Air Force in North Dakota, Jace began competing with North Dakota Motocross Association. In 2022 he earned 1st Overall in two classifications, 50A and 65B.

Jace made his debut on the national scene by finishing 1st overall at the Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier in Little Falls, Minnesota for 50cc, age 7-8. He followed that up with 21st overall at Loretta Lynn Regional Qualifier. 50cc, age 7-8.

He competed against the best racers in the country at The Motoplayground Race at Ponca City finishing 9th and 12th place overall in 50cc, age 7-8 and 50cc Open. He finished 24th overall at the AZ Open of Motocross in Buckeye, Arizona. Crashes and mud kept him out of completing all the motos.

The team at WORK believes every individual has potential. The organization’s mission is to accompany families in Haiti out of poverty through good, dignified jobs.

They work in one community in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, called Menelas, where about 1,500 families live. The goal is simple…to place two heads of households into a good, dignified job, so that families and their community can lift themselves out of poverty forever.

WORK stands beside the families they serve, working to remove barriers to their success, and providing necessary resources to accompany them to independence. The organization restores human dignity. When WORK commits to a family, our commitment stands until we get the job done whether that takes 10 days or 10 years.

The process starts by getting to know the families and to learn about their needs. Oftentimes it begins with addressing health concerns, as illness can stand in the way of all other goals. Next, they ensure all school-aged children have access to an education and address basic needs such as debt and housing with their parents.

Once family members are work-ready, they participate in WORK’s job preparation program and are trained and placed into dignified work. WORK families receive follow up services such as professional development and household budgeting workshops and WORK’s commitment to accompany them remains until it’s no longer needed.

After college, Spencer had many paths available to him…he chose a commission as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army, and currently serves as the Northeast Regional Manager for KOS Naturals, an avid endurance athlete.

Spencer is a thoughtful young man of character, a Hall of Famer on the gridiron and in life. He leads by example and is a role model I encourage my grandsons to look up to.

Our guest for Episode #32 of the podcast is Phil Bourque “The Old 29er”. Phil was a member of the Penguins teams which won the Stanley Cup in the 1990–91 and 1991–92 seasons. Bourque currently works as the color commentator alongside Mike Lange for Penguins radio broadcasts.

His professional career started with disappointment when he wasn’t selected in the NHL Entry Draft; instead, he was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 4, 1982. Despite being I drafted, he worked his way onto the club and played in 477 NHL games over a 12 year career.

You don’t have to be a hockey fan to pull something out of this show. Phil’s story is one we all can relate to. With Captain Hack Cadwallader in the co-host chair, we changed things up a bit for this show, filming the show from the ARC Human Services Gallery Space in Canonsburg.

Our guests are Melissa Migliaro, Rachel Shuster and Meghan Scichilone.

Melissa brings over 14 years of a diverse background that has prepared her to serve as a resourceful independent consultant in the Pittsburgh area. She combines her previous experience in social work, marketing, and community outreach with previous skills as Founder and CEO of Metamorphosis, her own Wellness Company, to serve a wide range of people and communities.

As a self-starter and entrepreneur, Melissa prides herself on her ability to form long-standing relationships to help connect people with the resources and other people to advance their personal and business goals. She has the ability to provide quick turn-around results for her clients and brings a refreshing and charismatic energy to her audience.

As an avid runner in the Pittsburgh area, Melissa also enjoys cross training with weight lifting, swimming and biking. Rachel is a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) and a Certified Allied Addiction Professional (CAAP) native to Western Pennsylvania. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Waynesburg University in 2012, she began her nursing career as a critical care nurse and also taught nursing part-time as a clinical instructor before transitioning to her current specialty of addictions nursing. Rachel has worked in a variety of settings including as the charge nurse of an outpatient office-based addiction treatment clinic and as the site nurse of a residential treatment program for young-adults and now works as an Addiction Specialist for Highmark Wholecare.

Rachel is a person in long-term recovery from a substance use disorder and enjoys speaking publicly about her experience and journey as a healthcare professional in recovery. In 2021, Rachel published an article in the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services detailing her experience with and recommendations for improving alternative-to-discipline programs for nurses with substance use disorders.

She was selected as an honorable mention for Pittsburgh Magazine’s 2019 Excellence in Nursing Awards due to her work in the field and in her community as an addictions nurse and advocate and was awarded a 2021 Pittsburgh Recovery Award as a Recovery Pathway Supporter. Rachel is a member of various professional organizations including the International Nursing Society on Addictions (IntNSA) and has previously served on the Board of Directors as the 2019-2021 Secretary.

Meghan is a full time Realtor with 20 years of sales experience in a variety of fields from SaaS to advertising. Meghan is a graduate of The College of Charleston where she played Division I volleyball. She holds many real estate certificates and is consistently ranked top 3% nationwide in sales. Meghan is the President/Founder of The Michael Douglas Foundation whose mission is to educate parents and children about the dangers of drug use.

The Foundation has donated over $50,000 to local organizations such as The Matilda Theiss Center which specializes in helping children and families dealing with mental health issues. The Foundation was founded after Meghan lost her brother, Michael, to an accidental overdose in 2016. She and her family use The Foundation to ensure Michael's legacy is a positive one and in the hope that others do have to suffer the same immeasurable loss.

Al is a people person and his knowledge of sports is unparalleled. His ability to bring people together for a cause is evident in the many local sports figures, musicians, business owners, and entertainers that have appeared on his show.

Allen is blessed, a few years ago, without warning , he was told he was in Stage 4 kidney failure. He was the recipient of a new kidney from his son and through the life-saving transplant was given a new lease in life.

This was a far ranging conversation, and this show is unlike any other we’ve done to date. I don’t think Nick and I have ever laughed this much. Allen is a true Pittsburgh guy and I’m honored to call him a friend.

For Episode #24 of the podcast we welcome Eric McKenna to the show. Eric’s story is full of twists and turns. His life has been a life based on self-reliance, yet full of good fortune and good people. And a life always centered around music.

There have been several defining moments on Eric’s journey; the death of his only sibling, Brian McKenna, in June of 1996 due to a drug overdose, resulted in a seismic shift in his life philosophy.

In 1999 Eric left corporate America and launched Boogie Street Guitars, an online-only, worldwide guitar sales and design company. For 15 years, BSG was a journey that could not have been scripted.

2013 brought the conclusion of Boogie Street Guitars. It was time for the next chapter. Eric became a PA licensed Realtor. It was the perfect career choice. Driven by my fascination with people and the desire to be of service, being a Realtor was a perfect fit.

Fast forward to March of 2019 and the launch of THE ERIC MCKENNA PROJECT. EMP is the 'Anti-Soundbite'. Filmed and recorded in the Boogie Street Studio, EMP is a full production video and audio podcast. EMP is not a commercial endeavor. The show has no sponsors. Really Big Faces was much more than an exhibition of art. It was a celebration of the diverse stories that make up our amazing city. With this exhibit, artist Tom Mosser celebrates of 83 Pittsburghers and one golden retriever. He celebrates all of us.

Tom creates amazing art using his signature “Flow”, “Funnel Flow” and “Loop” techniques to create the Really Big Faces. Tom was inspired by the scale of the portrait art of Chuck Close, the drip technique of Jackson Pollock , the color palette of Andy Warhol, and drawing style of Bernie Fuchs.

Nick and I were honored to be asked to share some of those diverse stories in the podcast. This weeks episode is special because of the faces, their powerful stories, and the beginning of new friendships and collaboration.

Episode #21 of the Podcast is one I’ve been looking forward to. This week’s show, we dive into vital the role of our community health systems. Joining us are Brook Ward, and Sara Schumacher of the Washington Health System.

The Washington Health System is a fully integrated health system with nearly 3,000 highly trained medical professionals, WHS provides health care services at more than 40 off-site locations throughout three counties. These include diagnostic centers, outpatient care facilities, the Cameron Wellness Center, Greenbriar Treatment Center, urgent care and a hospice facility.

Brook Ward assumed the position of President and CEO of Washington Health System (WHS) in Washington County, Pennsylvania in July 2019. From 2010- June of 2019, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

In his role, Mr. Ward provides leadership, direction, and administration across the entire Washington Health System, which includes a large community hospital, a small rural hospital, a 70-provider physician group, a community wellness center, residency and fellowship programs, a school of nursing program and onsite medical simulation center and joint ventures in the areas of hospice, senior living, home health, cancer center and others. Working with the health system’s Board of Directors, he charts the course of the health system in response to the health care needs of the community.

Sara Schumacher is a Certified Fundraising Executive and became the Executive Director of the Washington Health System Foundation in 2018. She fosters philanthropic relationships to support WHS’s commitment to healthier communities and to carry out their mission of providing Great Patient Care.

Sara is a graduate of Indiana University of PA and majored in Journalism. She is currently enrolled in Waynesburg University’s MBA program. Sara’s experience in writing and event planning led her to an internship at Washington Health System where she found her niche working for non-profit community health systems.

We met some amazing new friends at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh…AND we were blessed to spend time with a few "Really Big Faces" in the Covestro Brightspace Room at the EIC.

We shared great conversations and heard inspirational stories with Tom Mosser, an internationally recognized Pittsburgh artist and the creative force behind the one-of-a-kind “Really Big Faces” and RBF’s, Chef Claudy M. Pierre, Artist Corey Ochai, Writer/Filmmaker JoAnn Harrap, and future RBF, Photographer Jill Farrar. We weren’t male or female, we weren’t black or white…we were just people sharing a moment in time.

This week, we learned about diversity, inclusion and belonging, the ripple effect of philanthropy’s small splashes, the process of creating amazing art…and the importance of community.

Brigadier General (BGen) Dave Papak, US Marine Corps, (RETIRED), is a native of Monongahela, Pa. and a 1971 graduate of Mon Valley Catholic HS. He was commissioned in the US Marine Corps following graduation from the US Naval Academy in 1976. He also earned a Master’s of Science degree from the University of Southern California in 1986.

BGen. Papak was designated a Naval Aviator and a CH 53 helicopter pilot in 1979. During his 33 years of dedicated and honorable service he has held numerous aviation command and staff assignments, including deployments in support of Operation Desert Storm and the most recent Global War on Terror. Subsequent to his 2009 Marine Corps retirement, he continues to work in the corporate world as a senior level sales and business development executive.

He also dedicates his energy and time to the Travis Manion Foundation serving as a veteran presenter for the Foundation’s Character Does Matter Program in addition to being an advisor for local community 9/11 Heroes Runs honoring local Veterans and first responders.

After graduating from MVC in 1971 where he earned three letters in basketball and football, Papak played four years for the Midshipmen and lettered in 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was inducted into the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, the first Mon Valley Catholic athlete to be so honored.

He and his wife Kate enjoy 3 children and 6 grandchildren and currently reside in Monongahela, Pa.

He has received proclamations from Former State Representatives Ed Gainey and Jake Wheatley Jr., along with State Representative Anthony Deluca.  A few of his awards include 2021 Marlon J. Lucas “Love is Action” Community Humanitarian Award, 2018 VBC Veteran of the Era Award, 2018 BMe Black Genius Fellowship Award, 2018 Passion Meets the Road Entrepreneur Award, 2018 CEA Nation Building Award, and 2017 New Pittsburgh Courier Men of Excellence Award, amongst others.

She is very active in our community serving on the Pittsburgh Film office and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, as well as serving as a board member of our local United Way.

Tim began a ministry in broadcasting in 1976 when as a teenager he began working in Christian radio. In 1980 Tim began his ministry in television when he served as an intern at WPCB TV 40. Since then he has had the privilege of serving the Lord and CTVN in nearly every position.

Lisa’s life has been about reaching out to bring hope to others. After her father lost his battle with diabetes, she continued to get her teaching degree from Duquesne University while working fulltime and helping her mother battled the grief while helping with taking care of her youngest sibling.

When Pastor Tim shared the vision of helping to change a whole community, she was the first to jump on board, seeing the Full Potential Project with the coffee shop, tutoring, single moms and mentoring it was a perfect fit as her heart is to bring the hope, joy, love, and peace she knows to others.

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard and the city’s Commissioner of Public Works, Damani Bush, join us to share the story of a community that has been left behind.

But Mount Vernon is a community…a strong, resilient community in fact. Along with our colleagues from GPI and Jackson & Tull, we toured the city and saw first hand the Infrastructure that is literally crumbling beneath their feet.

We saw a decrepit sewer system that has outlived its useful life, a water distribution system predominantly made of lead pipes, bridges that cannot safely carry traffic, and city buildings that have been condemned for safety reasons.

But the thing we will remember most is the people. We met people, some who invited us into their homes…homes that have been flooded with raw sewage. Whether residents, business owners, or city employees, we saw the immense pride in a city that is determined to be left behind no more.
