It's a late post, but that's what happens when you're getting back into things and trying a new platform. My take on what the Panthers should do going into the 2026 NFL draft. Free Agency set them up to be able to actually take the Best Player Available, but who will that be for them? I know I've got my opinions...

 The Carolina Panthers are poised to open the 2025 season and take on the Jacksonville Jaguars September 7th! But first, a look back at an off-season that saw Dan Morgan and company rebuild a historically bad defense through free agency and the draft while still making moves to improve the offense. Was it enough though and will the Panthers finally rise from the cellar of the NFC South?

Recapping the Carolina Panthers' preseason kickoff against the Cleveland Browns at Bank of America Stadium. The 1st team offense showed what they needed to in their first game back, but how about the defense? Carolina had opportunities against the Browns, but didn't capitalize when they needed to. UNC did what they were supposed to do, at home, against UNC-Charlotte. The defense was aggressive, if undisciplined. The offense rotated almost all their players and put up enough points to keep the game out of reach for the 49ers.

The Panthers on the other hand, had what most long-time fans would consider the single worse half of Panthers' football - ever. The defense allowed 7 scores on the first 7 drives, the offense didn't get on the board until a FG went through the uprights as time expired going into halftime. So, in reaction, I took to PFF's Mock Draft Simulator, fresh with summer scouted prospects and set to put the Panthers back together in a 3RD, way too early, overreaction mock draft. Then I broke down what a calmer me thinks about the state of this team and where we go from here (only up right?).

After OTAs, Rookie Training Camp, Pre-season Training Camp, and a less-than-thrilling pre-season game against the New England Patriots, it's safe to say that the newest build of the Carolina Panthers is going to take awhile - and that's ok! It looks like Dan Morgan and staff are going to methodically, and purposefully, build a contender. How? Listen on to find out my opinion.

The 2024 Draft is over and the Panthers have seven new players to welcome. It took a number of moves, both up and down the board to secure "their guys," but the staff feel good about the incoming class. But do i?

Last minute episode with my opinions of the Panthers' draft opportunities. No first round pick, and multiple day two picks with plenty of needs across the roster makes this one of Carolina's most interesting drafts. Wide receiver (mercifully) seems to be stacked with day two/WR2 talent, just pick your flavor, while other needs are a little more acute - OC, EDGE, LB. Plus, who are "my guys" for each of the major positions of need?

With the majority of Free Agency behind us, I ran through two mock drafts - one on Pro Football Focus and another at Pro Football Network. The overarching goal was the same: draft two capable WRs to compete for a starting position and increase the dynamism of the Panthers offense; find a physically gifted C to back up and eventually replace Austin Corbett, and fill in rotational needs at TE, LB, RB, and CB. While finding a strong player at ED would be ideal as well, I'm not as focused on making that happen this year.

It's been awhile since I was giving you my opinion and a lot has changed for the Carolina Panthers...and the Tarheel basketball program. After firing Frank Reich, Tepper relieved Fitterer of GM duties once the season ended. This opened up the doors for one of the most extensive rebuilds in recent memory for Carolina. A slew of Free Agent signings, and a couple trades has new GM Dan Morgan reshaping this team in his own image while providing new HC Dave Canales with what everyone is hoping will be better offensive weapons for the former Offensive Coordinator with a QB and passing game background. Meanwhile, UNC Basketball looked like the Tarheels of old this season, but it still wasn't quite enough to get them through the NCAA Tournament as an early exit to Alabama brings the college careers of Armando Bacot and Cormac Ryan to an end.

UNC collapses in their bowl game against  WVU, perfectly encapsulating their season. The Carolina Panthers finally show signs of progress against Green Bay at home in Charlotte before finding an all-new bottom in Jax. In a bright spot, UNC basketball picks up a gritty W at Pitt as ACC play gets underway and the Pod begins to look more closely at CBB.

The Panthers eeked out a W in Charlotte in front of a section-sized crowd. But taking down Atlanta, and likely their playoff hopes, made it all that much sweeter. Meanwhile, UNC basketball stumbles again, this time due to poor late-game decision making.

The Tarheels pulled out an emotional and grueling win against the Blue Devils with students storming the field in celebration. And why not? You should be fired up for these kinds of games. Meanwhile, the Panthers continue to struggle on offense and it appears the coaching staff is unwilling to open things up for Bryce - why not?

UNC stumbles, at home, against UVA picking up their first loss of the season. Fortunately (but not really) there weren't that many people there to witness it. In Charlotte,  the Panthers were on a bye week, so we only had to endure one loss this weekend.

The offensive struggles continue for Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers as they are outscored by their own defense 7-6 in a loss to the 0-3 Minnesota Vikings. What's the root cause and what kind of effect is it having? On the defense? On the fan base?

The North Carolina Tarheels continue to develop and keep their winning record intact, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 1997 while the Carolina Panthers continue to struggle, dropping another one-score game, this time in a dreary Seattle loss.

Finally living back in the U. S. and watching my favorite teams on-time, as intended. The Carolina Tarheels seem to be growing and putting together a competitive team. The Panthers however, seem to still be searching for an identity.  My opinion of this weekend's games and where these teams sit.

Back in May, the Carolina Panthers moved up from 90 to 80 to select DJ Johnson, EDGE from Oregon. He was supposedly high on Carolina's board, prompting the front office to spend two picks on the fast, fiery, but raw prospect. But in the last two weeks the Panthers have added two veteran, Pro-Bowl caliber LBs to supplement their edge rush while Johnson has had a pretty quiet training camp. Was he worth those two picks?

Minnesota may be in the market to trade stand out DE Daniele Hunter.  Hunter has recorded double-digit sacks in 4 of his 6 full seasons, (6 in a shortened, 7-game 2021) is a 3-time Pro Bowler and would be coming from a 3-4 defensiv  scheme. During that time, he's put up more than Gross-Matos and Haynes combined. Should the Panthers pursue him? And at what cost?

Bryce Young vs CJ Stroud, vs AR15, vs Dereck Carr. A lot of people are asking what will be Young's biggest matchup this year - why are they framing it in terms of QB vs QB?! Young doesn't have to worry about opposing QBs, it's the defenses that matter! A quick look today at some of the top players Young will actually matchup against from our divisional opponents' defenses.

The pick is in - almost! It's draft day and everything is pointing to Bryce Young being the #1 pick for the Carolina Panthers. But who do I have in my final mock? And what happens after Day 1? Carolina has a looming gap between picks 39 and 93. How should they deal with that? And who do they target after QB? EDGE? WR? TE?

I'm still on the CJ Stroud bandwagon (and may be the only one left), but should Carolina draft Anthony Richardson with the #1 overall pick instead? If athletic profile and dynamic playmaker abilities are part of the reason Bryce Young is being considered over CJ Stroud, why not go all-in on Anthony Richardson?

After selecting CJ Stroud with the #1 pick (IMO), what do the Panthers do next? What position groups should they target on Day 2? What should they do about the looming gap between 39 and 93?? Who do the Panthers pick at #1? Bryce Young clearly is a dude, but can his frame sustain the abuse of a full NFL season for years to come? CJ Stroud is an impeccable passer, but does he lack the athleticism that is starting to set more and more quarterbacks apart? Anthony Richardson has all the athletic traits a head coach could desire, but can he process at the necessary level to succeed in the NFL? My opinion on each of these is covered on this episode.
