Acts 2:14a, 36-47, Ps 116:11-16v, 1 Pet 1:13-25, Luke 24:13-35

Introduction: Evangelism Reset

MOTIVATION, MOVEMENT, and MOMENTUM.
In talking about MOTIVATION,
I want to focus on the internal work that we need to begin doing
before we ever begin a conversation with anyone.
And I will end this sermon by giving you
a homework assignment that we will continue
throughout the season of Easter.

MOTIVATION
Why start with MOTIVATION, you might ask:
Just like with anything else in our lives, we tend to think that some virtuous things are good ideas, or nice suggestions. Getting into shape, reading that one good book, and reaching out to that one person in need is something that we probably SHOULD do. But with the proper MOTIVATION, we take good ideas and turn them into commitments.

A commitment is something that you do. It is part of you. You re-organize your life to fulfill commitments.

STORY ** Blood pressure getting higher **

Moving from Good Idea to Commitment took MOTIVATION.

Look with me as we see the way that these STORIES motivate Jesus’ disciples to begin doing the work of EVANGELISM.

TRANSITION: Let’s turn to the Gospel story for today:
Today’s Gospel reading recites the famous event of Jesus' appearance
to his disciples on the road to Emmaus.

EMMAUS: Motivation
Luke 24:32 Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?

Notice here that this encounter the disciples had with Jesus resulted in some major internal shift. They began seeing their day through the lens of Jesus' incredible MERCY.

Movement
Luke 24:33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’

These disciples run back to the 11 and confirm what God has been doing in others by sharing their experience with Jesus.

Momentum
Luke 24:35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Culture of bread breaking to reveal Jesus

JESUS gave the disciples all that they needed. He was with them. And he gave them a repeated action (bread breaking) that they could do to continue that work of MOTIVATION, MOVEMENT, AND MOMENTUM.

Acts: Motivation
Acts: 2:43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.

Movement
Acts 2:46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.

Momentum
Acts 2:47b And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
See here that they continued “breaking the bread”
They continued performing wonders and signs
And God added to their number.

Their heart is aligned with God’s heart.

Movement
What is God calling you to do?
What should you do next in response to all that God has done for you?
What will you do?

Momentum
What is your greatest Hope?

Sermon: Transfiguration (8-6-23)

Ex 34:29-35 Ps 99 2 Pet 1:13-21 Luke 9:28-36

Introduction

The Transfiguration of Jesus shows us that heaven is here now.

We encounter the power of heaven now.
We bring heaven to others.
We grow confident in Christ.

Immediately before this story:

Peter says, “Messiah”
Jesus foretells death, then
“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:27).

We encounter the power of heaven now.

A Dynamic (Spirit-filled), Sacred (Set-apart), and Cohesive (Scripture-centered) faith is one in which we should expect to BE in the presence of Jesus - and see him working.

We bring heaven to others.

Peter did not get it: Luke 9:33: “Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.”
1 Kings 19 - Elijah visits:

God says, “What are you doing here? [...] GO!” Elisha, Jehu,
God does amazing thing for Elijah

Exodus 34: Moses’ Honeymoon with YHWH

8 And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. 9 He said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.” 10 He (YHWH) said: I hereby make a covenant. Before all your people I will perform marvels, such as have not been performed in all the earth or in any nation; and all the people among whom you live shall see the work of the Lord; for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

We grow confident in Christ.

2 Peter 1:19 - So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

First, notice what I am not saying: you should not grow confident in yourself. The journey of a Christian is one in which the GRACE of God and his love for you increases.

Conclusion:

Allow God to reveal heaven to you

Bring heaven to a world in darkness

Allow your confidence in Christ to increase

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour
The most expensive, expansive, extravagant musical tour ever.

SO FAR: 52 dates

Between ticket sales, merchandise, album purchases - the Taylor Swift franchise has grossed over $5 billion.

According to Dan Fleetwood, President of QuestionPro Research and Insights. “If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries; if she was a corporation, her Net Promoter Score would make her the fourth most admired brand, and her loyalty numbers mimic those of subjects to a royal crown.”

I want to ask you a basic question: Who is Taylor Swift?

I. Who am I?
This is THE question!
When Jesus walked onto the scene there were a lot of people who had already come to conclusions about who Jesus was. Many of the religious types rejected Jesus. Nathanial in the book of John goes so far as to say, “can anything good come out of Nazareth? And by the time of Jesus’ third year of ministry - people had all sorts of questions about Jesus. But more importantly, their questions were drawn from their preconceptions.

II. Who do you say I am?
Caesarea Philippi
Jesus places this question of who he is against the backdrop of Caesarea Philippi.
Greco-Roman: Temples, Courts, and Grottos to the recently divinized Caesar Augustus, the god Pan, and the nymphs.
Canaanites: Bashan (the mountain) the Rephaim and the Anakim (the giants) dwelled in this land. And in the mythology of the 1st century Jew - this was the location where the Nephelim in Genesis chapter 6 descended down to earth to have inappropriate relationships with the daughters of men.

Jesus wants us to go past knowing him. We are commanded to tell others … the work is in the SAYING.
In every way this points to the reality of Jesus’ calling. The work of Jesus has so far only led the disciples to the corners of Galilee, the northern portion of Israel.
But the ministry of the Church is going to expand past the borders of Israel. They are going to travel across many of the countries that would later make up Europe, western Asia, northern Africa - and into the ends of the earth.
Every location is a place that Jesus seeks to redeem.
But Jesus takes the claim even further. His ministry will reach past all the places where the living travel - and even break down the gates between the living and the dead. Jesus himself will break the bonds of death forever.

Why does this matter?
the claim: You are the Rock, and against this rock …
The who of Jesus changes the who of us.
Somewhere built into the claim of Jesus’ assembly is one that confronts the fame of the competing cults of Caesar, Pan, and the Nymphs.

You are the Christ …
You are the son of the LIVING GOD.

III. You are …!
Simon, Peter: the Rock.
The word rock - as Mountain - the new location of Jesus transfiguration.
The foundation of the Church.

When you answer the question, who is Jesus, the question, who am I suddenly shifts. Jesus as the King - has the authority to alter every aspect of your role in his Kingdom - but as the Son of God - he has the power to change your very being itself.

Notice that Jesus never asks Peter who Peter thinks Peter is - Jesus is in the business of giving Peter his own identity.

STORY: Grandma’s thank you cards

VERSE 1: A REASONED WORSHIP-WORK

παραστῆσαι Offer/Present

This is not a gift that you get to take back. This is an offering that no longer belongs to you.
Chrysostom: “For he does not say, offer ποιήσατε Exodus 29:39, Septuagint your bodies as a sacrifice, but present (παραστήσατε see below) them, as if he had said, never more have any interest in them. You have given them up to another.”

θυσίαν ζῶσαν Living Sacrifice - A sacrifice for the Hebrew temple was a gift that was given as a gift to God. Often this word refers to an animal victim.

This gift was given to God to benefit God and God’s people.
Here, Paul is referring to our gift as a LIVING sacrifice - meaning one that is being given over and over and over again.
Or … a sacrifice that continues to give: Like an incense that never stops burning, or a river that never stops flowing.

Εὐάρεστον Pleasing/Acceptable

Not just any sacrifice will do!
The way that you live and work is intended to please God.
I will address the problem this word creates for us in a moment.

λατρεία Worship/Service

12:1 and 9:4 (points directly to the service and worship of the Israelites). Refers to LXX of Ex 12:25 (the Passover Supper) and Jos 22:27, and 1Ch 28:13 (Temple Services).
Related to the word Liturgy, it is WORK.
Did you know that worship and prayer is work?

λογικός “Spiritual”/ but really: Reasonable

Because the actual word is “logikeh” - where we get the word “logical.” Literally in this sense - the word means that our worship is a response that aligns with God’s reason.
As it will become clear in just a moment, this reasonable worship is not going to be found by using our reason.

(the New Testament for Everyone)

Be. Know. Grow. Go.

The BE is about reorienting our self understanding.
You are a WORSHIP instrument. Every part of you is made to play the song: God is AWESOME.

Verse 1: Our response to God’s mercy is a life of worship.

The problem is that word “acceptable” or “pleasing”. In order for something to be pleasing to God, we have to somehow know what pleases God. How to life in a way that pleases God.

VERSE 2: TRANSFIGURED MINDS

μὴ συσχηματίζεσθε Don’t be fashioned (outward, only skin deep)
Note: the Passive, Temporary, fickle, a trend that is here today and gone tomorrow.

Μεταμορφοῦσθε (μεταμορφόω) Transfigured (like the transfiguration) a complete change.
Note: Passive, This is a change to divine things - moral character

Ἀνακαίνωσις Renewal/Renovation
Change for the better, (ana): an upward movement

Νοῦς “Rational Mind”
Reason-Center for perceiving, understanding, feeling, judging,

δοκιμάζω To prove by testing
Bible study as the class and the laboratory

θέλημα Will/Desire
What one intends and sets their intent toward.

GOOD, ACCEPTABLE, AND PERFECT

VERSE 3: THE JUDGMENT OF FAITH

Ὑπερφρονεῖν Think more highly of yourself

CONCLUSION

BECOMING SOBER MINDED : SURRENDER

Bringing Heaven to Earth: Grace upon Grace

Introduction: The Ambassadors of God

The main point I want to make with you today is that God desires intimacy with you.

Two Images:

There are two images from our readings

that serve to me as a sort of side by side comparison.

First the Image from John: The Word became flesh.

Second the image from Galatians: You are clothed with Christ.

I want to unpack these images for us

and use them as a tool to describe

this bringing together of God and Humanity.

John: Clothed in Flesh

Image: Wearing Superman

God Made the First Move: (1 John 4:10)

“In this is love, not that we loved God

but that he loved us and sent his Son

to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

God set up the world in such a way so that you might be saved.
- Not that you will, but so that you could if you chose to be.

God Went Down: (Philippians 2:7-8)

“but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

assuming human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a human,

he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross.”

The way of God’s incarnation is unexpected: it is a way of humility.
- Suffering results in this new life
  - (think of reproductive suffering with a child)

God Shined in Darkness: (John 1:5)

“The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness did not overtake it.”

Jesus spoke and lived the truth.
- Some saw Jesus’ truth and followed it
  - Most saw Jesus truth and rejected it or tried to squash it.

Galatians: Clothed with Christ Adulting in Faith (Galatians 3:25-26)

“But now that faith has come,

we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian,

for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”

Start acting like Jesus
- Everyone is watching you to see how God acts.

No more Democrats or Republicans (Galatians 3:28)

“There is no longer Jew or Greek;

there is no longer slave or free;

there is no longer male and female,

for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”

Not just “stop acting” in Christ there are none.
- One in Christ means we are all responsible for one another.
- We cannot ever say “not my problem”

Heirs of God’s Promise (Galatians 3:29)

“And if you belong to Christ,

then you are Abraham’s offspring,

heirs according to the promise.”

You belong to Christ
- You also inherit what God’s children inherit

Sermon: Heaven is Here (8-20-23)

Isa 56:1-8 Ps 67 Rom 11:13-24 Matt 15:21-28

Introduction

STORY: A woman from Retirement Home

Pentecost: asked me for anointing and prayers for healing. When I did not show up she called me, Irene, left voicemails.
Someone said, “she is being RUDE.”
She did not stop asking for prayers until I laid my hands on her.

Healing in the scriptures

As human creatures living in the world, we know that something is broken about the world.

REASON: Earth was made for heaven.

All healing is an anticipation of that unity between heaven and earth.

MERCY: Have Mercy on ME!

MERCY: not getting what we deserve.

So why would she ask for it?
This is not something that she has the right to, not something that she has earned. She has no rights to this request -
but she shouts for it.

IDENTITY: She is not a SHEbrew/Judean

Gentile

Division between Greeks (Matthew’s word for Gentiles) and Hebrews.

Persistent & Insistent

v.22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting
v.23 “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.”

Her Approach: The woman's attitude of being aggressive - she was not worried about being put off, she was going to receive healing even if she had to upset the healer.

BELOVED:
Mercy is not dependent on the worthiness of the recipient but the kindness of the giver.

HESED - “Enduring Love-Mercy”, “Loyal Love”
Image of God
She is made in the image of God.
Her brokenness is something only God can heal.

APPLICATION:

Our God is a God of Hesed: Enduring Love-Mercy.

It is out of God’s HESED that he asks us to PUT HIM FIRST.

AND -

In showing us our desperate temporary circumstances, God is showing us our desperate ETERNAL circumstances.

Jeremiah 29:12-13

12 When you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. 13 When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart […]

HUMILITY Jesus: Lord, Son of David
Coming to Jesus on Jesus’ terms, using Hebrew titles
David is King (Messiah) Lord - Kurios - Kyrie Eleison

HUMBLE:

Kneeling: She is more interested in God’s healing than her pride: HUMBLE.
Jesus called her a wild DOG: not a pet dog, a RAT DOG. A Pest.
She did not disagree with him. And in comparison to Jesus, she is a mangy mutt. SO ARE WE!!!!
She did not let her pride get in the way. She saw Jesus’ healing mercy as greater than her status or stature.

APPLICATION:

We need to remove our POSTURE OF PRIDE:
It does not work in a country club church
We must become a HOUSE OF HEALING

Psalm 126:5-6

5 May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

Conclusion: Heaven Fall Down
I HAVE ONE JOB: To get you to heaven

We do not have to wait for you to die.
On earth as in heaven … heaven and earth unite in the Church.

You can encounter heaven now: Like Jesus, James, and John on the mountain when Jesus became transfigured before them and shined brighter than the SUN.

THE TAKEAWAY:

Revival:

The entire point of the Church: to bring heaven to earth.
So we need to foster an environment of HEAVEN NOW.
Remove the Veil between Heaven and Earth

Jesus is here right now.

Genesis 12:1-9; Psalm 33:12-21; Romans 4:1-12; Romans 4:13-17; John 3:1-16

SERMON

Introduction: Last week: Temptation

This week, sin.

Lent is about recognizing, exposing, and removing sin.

Sin is about disconnect from God, and is therefore a brokenness in our BEING.
1. The stories of Salvation from our texts (Romans 4, John 3) describe a process that is not centered in what we DO but who we ARE.
  1. Romans 4:
    1. Sin as a debt / blemish

7 “Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the one against whom the Lord will not reckon sin.

This language of reckoning describes a debt mark.
John 3:
1. what is born of flesh is flesh, what is born of spirit is spirit
2. Jesus says that in order to be part of heaven, you have to BE in God.
  1. We are not just born connected to God, we need to be re-born.
Salvation is about FINDING GOD again, staying in sin is living separated from God.
1. Proverbs 8:35-36

35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, 36 but those who miss me injure themselves; all who hate me love death.”

John 3: The bronze serpent
1. Belief for the people in Exodus was about standing near the cast-serpent. Believing in Jesus is about BEING with him.
Psalm 33:17
1. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear him, * and upon those who put their trust in his mercy,
Salvation is deliverance from death, sin is letting the (s)infection spread
1. Romans 4:17 “God gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist”
2. God uses us to bless (Gen 12:2)
  1. As people and nations
3. John 3:16
  1. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
    1. The sending of the son is a cascading effect. Eternal life begins to spring out of our love for God and one another.

Conclusion:

Lent: recognizing our sin and our need for salvation.

Opportunity to BE in god’s presence.

Sunday, February 5th, 2023 (Epiphany 5)

2 Kings 22:8-20; Psalm 27; 1 Corinthians 2; Matthew 5:13-20

Spirit-Talk, Spirit-Walk

Setting the Scene: 2 Kings 22:19

The people of God did not live in the way that the Book of the Law commanded. By the time Josiah the King heard the book for the first time he was 26 years old.
In 2 Kings 23 he has altars, firepits, dedication places all taken down and destroyed, some within the temple itself.
If this story happened in Jerusalem, during the reign of the Kings of Judah, could it happen today?

The Past: NaCl - the Salt
Kingdom of God without God:

I believe that we are living in a time period very similar to the kingship of Josiah.
1. We have institutionalized and religified apathy, lifeless religion, judgementalism, and giftless ministry.
The very same ruler who enslaved the Hebrews before (the Pharaoh of Egypt) is knocking on our door again.

Untasted Salt

I think Jesus hits home this message of lifeless religion in his sermon on the mount.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot.” (Matthew 5:13)
What Jesus is saying here is that we are not actually savoring the SALT: the Spirit of God. We are preparing a table, scarfing down the food, and not tasting the food.

Question: Why are we doing all this?

Why did you drive to Church this morning?
I have all sorts of reasons why I COULD go to Church:

The Goal: Falling in Love with our Savior
The Psalm:

4 One thing have I desired of the Lord; one thing I seek: *

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

5 To behold the fair beauty of the Lord, * and to seek him in his temple.

Why are you here?
But if we can re-align our priorities and place God at the center - we will experience the Spirit of God.

I will receive all the money that I need from God
I will receive true friendship with God
I will worship my Lord Jesus.
God speaks to me through the liturgy.

The Disconnect of verse 5

I think that some of us have never SEEN the beauty of the Lord - we have not sought GOD!
If this is the case, we are saltless salt, lightless light, the Children of God with no God.

Religion in the WEST

Decline of religion: Christianity especially
Rise in Spirituality and Belief in God

Pandemic, Economic decline have resulted in an INCREASE in god-awareness/interest.

In short - HATE the Religion // Interested in the God.
If we actually WALK the WALK and TALK the TALK
1. Talking and living like Jesus.

Conclusion: The Spirit
Old sermon: Why is the Church dying?

When was the last time you saw a miracle?
When was the last time you actually SAW the power of God.

Invite the HOLY SPIRIT

How do we respond to Gov. Ventura?

YES, you're right! We are weak!

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

CS Lewis - “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”
Don’t be controlled by your impulses.
Stop being surprised by your sin!

Tell what God is doing - (Matthew 5:1-11)

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

What happens in Baptism?

Baptism is an act of repentance

In the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, or in Jesus name?

Do I have to be baptized by a priest?

In what ways are people baptized?

When should I get baptized as an adult?

When should I get my child baptized?

What is the argument for infant baptism?

Why do people reject infant baptism? (https://www.desiringgod.org/messages/how-do-circumcision-and-baptism-correspond)

In every New Testament command and instance of baptism the requirement of faith precedes baptism. So infants incapable of faith are not to be baptized.
1. Retort: Matthew 19:14 “Let the little children come to me …”
2. Abraham in faith circumcised his children and
There are no explicit instances of infant baptism in all the Bible. In the three "household baptisms" mentioned (household of Lydia, Acts 16:15; household of the Philippian jailer, Acts 16:30–33; household of Stephanus, 1 Corinthians 1:16) no mention is made of infants, and in the case of the Philippian jailer, Luke says explicitly, "they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house" (Acts 16:32), implying that the household who were baptized could understand the Word.
Paul (in Colossians 2:12) explicitly defined baptism as an act done through faith: ". . . having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God." In baptism you were raised up with Christ through faith—your own faith, not your parents' faith. If it is not "through faith"—if it is not an outward expression of inward faith—it is not baptism.
The apostle Peter, in his first letter, defined baptism this way, ". . . not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:21). Baptism is "an appeal to God for a good conscience." It is an outward act and expression of inner confession and prayer to God for cleansing, that the one being baptized does, not his parents.
When the New Testament church debated in Acts 15 whether circumcision should still be required of believers as part of becoming a Christian, it is astonishing that not once in that entire debate did anyone say anything about baptism standing in the place of circumcision. If baptism is the simple replacement of circumcision as a sign of the new covenant, and thus valid for children as well as for adults, as circumcision was, surely this would have been the time to develop the argument and so show that circumcision was no longer necessary. But it is not even mentioned.

Spirit baptism is the empowerment of Christians by the Holy Spirit for works of ministry. It corresponds to the rite of confirmation and is most fully realized by outworking of the Spiritual Gifts.

Questions of interest:

Are all Christians baptized in the Holy Spirit in water Baptism?

No: Acts 19 (John’s baptism vs Spirit baptism) and John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Are you not saved if you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit?

No. One is saved through water baptism. (1 Peter 3:21)

Rather Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate event from water baptism.

II. Catholic

The virtue within the Catholic stream: wisdom

Catholic Christianity maintains an order and a universal consistency that looks back to previous wisdom, experience, and reflection to confront current events, issues, and crises (Jeremiah 6:16, 2 Thessalonians 2:15; 3:6).

The vice within the Catholic stream: authoritarianism
In the same way that Jesus confronted a 1st century Jewish privilege (Matthew 3:9; John 8:39, Mark 7:3-4), it is dangerous to presume that being Catholic alone precludes one from personal conversion, or spirit empowerment.

Catholicism as a temper for Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism

Catholicism tempers biblical particularism
- The writings of the Church Fathers, and the councils of the Church serve as a foil upon which we can guide biblical interpretation within a framework of stalwart and reliable faithful readings of the scriptures (Eg. Acts 15:1-21).
Catholicism tempers chaotic charismania
- Sets worship within the framework of orderly Christian devotion, that is orthodox and gives measure to the reading of scripture, sung worship, proclamation, and prayerful response.

III. Charismatic

The virtue within the Charismatic stream: faith

Charismatic Christianity emphasizes a visible faith through the interpersonal work of spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6). This work results in the building up of the local Church (1 Corinthians 12:7).

The vice within the Charismatic stream: emotionalism

In the same way that God desired mercy from the Israelites (Hosea 6:6), so he desires a true relationship not simply works (Matthew 7:21-23).

Pentecostalism as a temper for Evangelicalism and Catholicism

Pentecostalism tempers catholic institutionalism
- Just as Jesus entered the 1st century Jewish world as one with authority (Matthew 7:29), so the charismatic movement serves as a check against legalism and authoritarianism in demonstrating the public witness of spiritual gifts.
Pentecostalism tempers evangelical arrogance
- Just as James warned against faith without works (James 2:26) so the charismatic movement demonstrates that religious identity is not only intellectual but demonstrative in spiritual works.

IV. Evangelical

The virtue within the Evangelical stream: transformation

Evangelical Christianity’s emphasis on personal transformation through Biblical truth grounds the believer’s mind and heart in faithful obedience (John 8:32).

The vice within the Evangelical stream: arrogance

The individualized nature of evangelicalism and personal interpretation can lead to fractions along theological lines (Judges 17:6).

Evangelicalism as a temper for Pentecostalism and Catholicism

Evangelicalism tempers catholic authoritarianism
- Grounding the truth in the scriptures combats tradition for traditions’s sake (Matthew 22:29, Mark 7:8).
Evangelicalism tempers pentecostal emotionalism
- The scriptures serve as a foil to encapsulate the proper operation of the charismatic gifts (1 Cor 12:7; 13).

Defining Evangelical Christianity

Scripture - from its basic roots, Evangelical Christians have a high view of scripture. On the most basic level this means that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that its teachings are to be learned and obeyed.
Conversion/Revival/Transformation - The belief that the message of the Gospel will change individuals, families, and communities when it is communicated.
Proclamation - The gospel when proclaimed changes the world. This moves the Church to an active view on its role in sharing the Gospel with the world.

Definition of Each Spiritual Gift

Wisdom - The ability to receive and speak insightfully concerning a specific situation for the purpose of growing righteousness.
Knowledge - The ability to know information that was not read, or communicated by anyone but God. Often particular to a situation or individual.
Faith - The ability to bring about belief through works of trust.
Healing - The ability to compassionately enact healing that does not come from natural means.
Miracles - ability to perform signs - exorcisms, healings, raising from the dead, etc.
Prophecy - ability to receive and communicate a truthful message from God.
Discernment of Spirits - able to perceive good and evil, see spiritual beings, who influences the world.
Tongues - A language spoken to God that God gives the speaker.
Interpretation - A companion gift to tongues, the ability to understand a tongue spoken by a person.
Some clarification around spiritual gifts:

1. These lists are likely not comprehensive

2. All Spiritual Gifts are available to every believer

1 Cor 12:6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone
3. Spiritual gifts are used to build up or strengthen the local community.

1 Cor 12:7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
4. The Spiritual gifts are imparted by the Holy Spirit out each time we gather.

1 Cor 14:26: “What should be done then, my friends? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.”
5. We can operate with greater gifts.

1 Cor 12: 31 “strive for the greater gifts.”

Temptation for the Kingdom

Setting the Scene

Hunger - Stones are not Bread
What is the temptation?
Disordered Desire
To use appetite not as an indicator for life but as an indicator for pleasure.
Human response: He’s just hungry. He can make food how he wants.
Spiritual retort: God has specially ordered creation so that it can spring forth life in proper order.
Rocks are not food. It is not in the proper order of creation for Jesus, by whom all things were made, to eat rocks.

Do not live by disordered desire (have ≠ want)
Do not identify yourself by your desire

INSTEAD
Deuteronomy 8:3
This response of Jesus, this quotation seems like a non sequitur.
Trust in God begins with our appetite.
“The Law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul” (Ps 19:7).
Live by what God commands, not by your desires.
Identify yourself by God’s commands, not by your desires.

Glory and Authority - Don’t read the fine print
What is the temptation?
Power
Jesus is tempted to gain power through wrong means.
The temptation to do evil for the cause/sake of good. (consequentialism)
Imagine Jesus as Caesar
Read the fine print (facebook realities)
Notice when Joseph, was made second in command over Egypt, was given all the Glory and Authority of Egypt … what ultimately happened in Egypt? SLAVERY.

Do not flex power. Do not take your talents for granted.
Your talents/skills/abilities do not identify you.

INSTEAD
Deuteronomy 6:10-15
:: The ends do not justify the means. The purpose of your life is the way you live your life, not what you accomplish.
When you serve God, you will accomplish what God sets out for you to do.
“But strive first for the kingdom of God .... (Matthew 6:33).

Life - Test
What is the temptation?
Arrogance - Take your life into your own hands

Where are they?
On the top of the temple's main tower, above the sanctuary proper, some 180 feet above ground, the location that artists and others using the traditional translation generally set the story.
If Jesus would just alter the plan, right here in front of everyone, he could prove God’s power and put his own life at risk, and prove to all the authorities.

Satan quotes Psalm 91:12
12 They [the angels] shall bear you in their hands, *
that you hurt not your foot against a stone.

Do not decide how God is going to work through you based on your desires/interests/opinions or on your power/talent/ability.

INSTEAD

Jesus quotes Deut 6:16
Deuteronomy 6:16

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

God has placed you right here. It is not an accident.
What needs do you see around you?
Jesus never asks someone if they feel called.
Jesus never sets skill as a requirement of service.

Instead of planning your life, surrender to God.

Conclusions
How do we deal with temptation?
My power is made perfect in weakness …
Lead us not into temptation …
Flee from [sin].

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together. They had locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.

Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, “May peace be with you!” 20 Then he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were very happy when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “May peace be with you! The Father has sent me. So now I am sending you.”

22 He then breathed on them. He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

24 Thomas was one of the 12 disciples. He was also called Didymus. He was not with the other disciples when Jesus came. 25 So they told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “First I must see the nail marks in his hands. I must put my finger where the nails were. I must put my hand into his side. Only then will I believe.”

26 A week later, Jesus’ disciples were in the house again. Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came in and stood among them. What does it mean to be Charismatic/Pentecostal?

Charismatic Christians emphasize the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the use of Spiritual Gifts and miracles as a normative expression of the truth of the Gospels. Furthermore charismatics affirm and exercise the working of miracles and spiritual gifts in the current Church as a regular demonstration of the Chrstian life.

The distinctive beliefs of Charismatics and Pentecostals are:

The active operation of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
An event subsequent to salvation called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, in which the Spirit empowers the Christian for the work of the Church.

DEFINITIONS

First: When using the word charismatic in this context - I am not referring to people with strong personalities.

Charismatic - Greek word - Charis (Favor or Gift)

Refers to the gifts of the Holy Spirit described in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 & 14.

So Charismatic Christians are those who operate under the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will talk further about what exactly those are in our next episode when we break down the scriptural merit for the Charismatic movement.

Pentecostalism - Greek Pente-coste (50th) = Festival of Weeks - in Hebrew, Shavuot (Deuteronomy 16:10 & Exodus 34:22) which occurs 50 days after the Festival of Passover.

This particular label refers to the event in Acts chapter 2, when the disciples were gathered together in the upper room 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus and tongues of fire fell upon each of them, and they began to speak in tongues.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit -

Refers to a phrase spoken by John the Baptist (Matt 3:11, & Lk 3:16) and the risen Christ in Acts 1:5 “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” This refers to an event where a Christian is empowered with the Holy Spirit - the distinctive Pentecostal belief is that the initial physical evidence of this indwelling is speaking in tongues - much like the events in Acts 2:3. 10:46, 19:6.

Distinction between Charismatic and Pentecostal

I’ll be using the terms interchangeably.

The movement that began the global revival in the 20th century is commonly called Pentecostalism. Later revivalist movements have identified themselves using the distinction “Charismatic.” In a broad sense the difference between these two movements is about some disagreements about the concept of Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Beginnings of Modern Pentecostalism

Although there have been various examples of charismatic and mystics like Hildegard of Bingen, St. Theresa of Avila, and others, the modern conception of tongues has its historical roots in Azuza, California. A one eyed black preacher man named William Seymour began a small mission that became the catalyst for the movement. This led to a transformation in protestant and Catholic experiences of the Holy Spirit.

The Prevalence of the Pentecostal Movement

The Pentecostal and Charismatic movement has completely overtaken the globe. Today it is most prevalent within the charismatic Catholic movement - but has also had an effect on evangelical, and mainline protestant movements. The historic black Church has also widely practiced charismatic worship.

11 Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. 12 The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior.” 13 Gideon answered him, “But sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our ancestors recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14 Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; I hereby commission you.” 15 He responded, “But sir, how can I deliver Israel? 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. 20 The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And he did so. 21 Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. 22 Then Gideon perceived that it was the angel of the Lord; and Gideon said, “Help me, Lord God! For I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” 23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die.” 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it, The Lord is peace. Episode 5 (Part 2): Scriptures to Support the Evangelical Church

In this second part of Episode 5, Cn. George, David, and Fr. Dan sit down to talk about the scriptural evidence for the Evangelical Church.

First the scriptural evidence that the Church is a place of Conversion, Transformation. Second, that the people of God proclaim the Gospel and share their faith with others.

Conversion/Revival/Transformation - The belief that the message of the Gospel will change individuals, families, and communities when it is communicated. - Define Conversion - (turning toward)

John 8:32

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

A life lived following the text of the scriptures will liberate us from sin.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

God’s forgiveness and healing is subsequent to our turning toward him.

Acts 2:38

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Conversion requires repentance and baptism.

Acts 9:1-43 (Paul’s Conversion)

Just because we are religious or churchy does not mean that we are in fact truly following God.

Isaiah 55:7

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Conversion requires a life of transformation. This does not imply perfection, but a life of repentance and walking toward holiness.

Matthew 18:3

3 and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

We need to convert to a mentality where we take for granted that Jesus is correct and we are incorrect.

James 4:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

When we respond to God’s call to conversion, God will cleanse us internally.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Conversion changes us. We now become empowered by Christ rather than our own human weaknesses.

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The world does not want to follow Jesus. Our minds are taught the ways that the world wants us to believe, our minds need to be converted.

Romans 10:9-11

What does it mean to be Evangelical?

Scripture - from its basic roots, Evangelical Christians have a high view of scripture. On the most basic level this means that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that its teachings are to be learned and obeyed.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

The scripture is the guiding line that we use to realign what is crooked.

1 Timothy 4:13

Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.

The scripture is meant to be read not only privately but within the corporate body.

All of Psalm 119 - Lamp unto my feet, Wiser that my teachers, Hidden your word

The importance of the Law of God as a guiding principle for our lives and development. The scriptures show us how to please God, how to heal from sin, and how to live within the world.

Romans 15:4

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

The scriptures are intended to teach us and to point us to the hope of God in the world.

John 5:39-40

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

The scriptures are a separate witness that will tell us both who Christ is.

2 Peter 1:20-21

Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Scripture is caused by God, God has inspired the scripture, and the truth of the scripture in understanding them comes from a life of obedience and listening to what God is speaking through the scriptures.

United in the Word, United in the Body, United in the Spirit

Nehemiah 8:5-6, 8

The point:

Here we see that the scriptures unite the people of God into one single identity - the people-Israel. The scriptures tell them how to live, and they obey. The scriptures describe God’s work in the world, and the people act in accordance with its precepts.

In the same way - we the people of God - are united in our life in the scriptures. When we unite together in our regular observance of the reading of the scriptures - we understand who we are together.

In this way - the scriptures serve to correct our self understanding. The Bible heals our false narratives. The Word corrects the falsehoods we blindly accept.

1 Corinthians 12:12-21

The point:

Paul’s writing leads me to conclude two important observations here:

God created us all for one another. No matter how you feel about each other - God created you to be connected into this one body of Christ.

Luke 4:18-19

The Point:

Here Jesus shows that this one Spirit of God moves him to action. As a man who lives in accordance to the Law, who derives his identity from God, he is empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is singular in mission. He calls all of those near him to this singular mission. His command to the world is to live by the Spirit following this one single Mission.

When we are united in the Holy Spirit of God - we are united in that one Spirit to action. All of our gifts, our personalities, our re-orientations around the scriptures has the single purpose of Christ’s mission.

Episode 3: The Four Marks of the Church Catholic

Four marks: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic

One: We are to be united in heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Holy: We are to be a set apart people for God.
Catholic: We are to embody the entire expression and teaching of the Church.
Apostolic: Christians maintain the apostolic tradition and the teachings of the Church are guarded by the Bishops.

One:
Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
John 10:30 The Father and I are one.”
John 17:11 Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.
John 17:21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us
