In this special Off Script Episode, I am on the red carpet of the opening night for the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival. The opening movie being The Correspondent. Directed by Kriv Stenders and staring Richard Roxburgh and Julian Maroun, all three of who I was very fortunate to be able to speak with on the red carpet.

The Correspondent is the true story of award winning journalist Peter Greste who reporting on the Arab Spring uprising, becoming entangled in a deadly game of rivalries, of which he was imprisoned for seven years, despite his innocence. The story follows his journey of survival on wits alone, before being released in 2015.

In this episode, I turn the tables on Danny, where he normally gets to drill his guest on his podcast (including myself in 2022) and delve into what drives him to be an actor.

We talk about how growing up and how 'performance' can make you feel part of your environment and the people, especially pertinent for people how grew up moving around a lot, where you find yourself not having the opportunity to develop long friendships, and always feeling like the 'new guy'.

Danny has just moved to the UK to further his acting career, and as such, we discuss  the complexities of the Australian acting industry versus the UK industry. Such things as 'appearance' and how it effects your castability. For example, the UK market can be really strong on the 'real life' look of characters/actors, especially in comparison to the US market.

We really delve into the balancing of your day job, the job that pays the bills and how you need to determine when to give up your paid work for unpaid acting work. How to know when that unpaid work will support your acting career for footage and exposure.

In summary, a lot of what we discuss in this episode is so similar to my own journey, and many actors journey's, that it is about gaining experience to further your skill set.

In this episode, we discuss all aspects of his training, and how it was developed "in the trenches" and grew from experiences learnt in the field as an actor. We learn why it is unnecessary to fill one's toolbox full of tools, but how to have just the most pertinent and most important information at hand and in your head to bring a scene to life.

By treating whatever is happening in the scene as the most important thing (as we do in real life) you will never have a problem in making your scene real. And keeping actors "out of their heads" so they can play the scene truthfully and organically.

We also look at some of the technical sides of acting and call into question the industry generalisation of auditions such as the standard blue or grey back-ground, and the need to just deliver the scene.

And we also discuss why an actor needs to honor the writer's words, and how you can say those words verbatim and in a way that the audience believes they are being said for the first time.

In this episode the 'forum' discuss education for late bloomers. This was pretty much the number 1 topic during the year.  It seems that late bloomers pretty much rely on the short course and workshop approach to increasing their acting acumen.  

We also dive into the well-being of all actors around the world, regardless of their age, specifically the ups & downs of an actors journey, the moments where actors start to doubt themselves. I ask each of my guests how they are fairing coming out of the Covid mayhem, and what are their thoughts on how actors can stay positive on this journey?

Another big issue raised for actors, is “Creating Your Own Work”. This is discussed  a lot in relation to actors getting themselves out there, and also to make something for their show-reels. We have a great chat around the areas of ‘asking’ for volunteers to help with such content creation.  Is creating your own work completely necessary, a must have, or is it a sometimes things, a once off maybe?

 And finally, we discuss each of the guests views on something Tony said in his discussion, and that was "the actor finding permission to play." We talk about what each of us  do to bring characters to life, to make them real, on stage or on screen. And what barriers make this difficult.

Episode 10 with Aron Giagu. Aron is an Adelaide based writer and Director of independent productions, specifically his feature debut 'Are We Heroes' and up coming fantasy series 'Warpath Chronicle'. Aron is also a fight choreographer and teachers other actors how to fight for stage and screen both personally and also for local talent training school Type Talent.

Episode 9 with Tony Knight. Educated at Sydney Grammar School, trained at the Drama Centre in London and earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Sydney University. 

He was a long time teacher at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) where he was also the Head Of Acting for from 1992 to 2011 where he trained some of Australia's favorite actors including Cate Blanchett, Sam Worthington, Jacqueline MacKenzie and Miranda Otto to name a few. 

He has traveled the world both personally and as a teacher, taking his wisdom to many lectures and conferences.  

Now based in Adelaide, which is fortunate for us, he continues to educate actors both through regular training opportunities with many local agencies including Angela Heesom casting, Type Talent Drama, The Actor’s Studio and many others. 

He continues his love of stage as a co-producer and Director of Starc Productions and on top of all of this he is currently completing a PHD at Flinder’s University on Richard Burbage: Shakespeare’s Actor and the art of “Personation”. 

In this wonderfully insightful episode, we talk about stage acting and screen acting, do you need both how you can switch between both or come back later, regardless of your where you are in your career.

We discuss the benefits of theatre acting, how it can teach you as an actor to know 'styles' and how that can improve you as an actor in all forms. This leads us to discussing how to 'play the moment' in scenes, to make it real and why it's necessary to give yourself permission to 'play'. 

And we have a strong discussion on how honoring the history of your country and land, especially your local area effects your art and the stories you tell as an actor.

In this episode, I am very excited to interview the fantastic actor, Andy McPhee. Andy is an accomplished actor, both in Australia and the United States, with over 140 IMDB credits, including (arguably) his most known role as Keith McGee, in the acclaimed television series Sons Of Anarchy.  Straight out of the US, he has only just returned to Australia to pursue some great opportunities that have just come up.

A funny opening to the episode, we touch on the randomness of Google stats, and how 'funny' facts can be online.

Andy discusses his early years of growing up and how that influenced his life and led him to acting.  We discuss how past 'mistakes' in life effect one's future, and can open doors that you may never have expected.

Method acting acting and/or drawing on your past life experiences can certainly enhance your acting ability, and Andy discusses how you can draw on this to improve your skillset.

Mindset training is a HUGE focus on so many aspects of life today, and Andy discusses his understanding of how this can supplement your acting journey.

And a lot of this episode focuses on Andy's training/coaching approach. It is about getting out of your comfort zone and doing a lot of creative work, so you are not worried about getting it right but just getting it done.

Episode 7 is all about agents, with my Adelaide agents from Buckland and Gun Management (aka AAA Talent).

We discuss the actor/agent relationship and how to enjoy the journey of acting rather than hoping for fame and fortune alone.

Being Adelaide based, we do focus on the South Australian industry particularly, which was very interesting in the discussions around how SA industry participants are all so open to collaboration in this state, both in the student film sector, independent film sector and professional sectors.

We discuss the journey of AAA Talent from when Nick and Carina bought it, to make it an agency to rival the traditional eastern states agencies that lure away actors from Adelaide.

A big part of Nick and Carina's agency philosophies, is in developing their actors to move from extra roles, to bit parts and then on to lead roles. 

We also look at the differences of Australian agencies compared to the US model, that typically involves an agent, a commercial agent, a manager and likely a few other commission receiving entities. 

And we finish up with talking about he complexities of an acting career for late bloomer actors who have to juggle their acting whilst still managing mortgages, family and bill paying careers.

Episode 6  is  with Adelaide based actor, Tim Hawkins.

Tim is an Adelaide identity. Having started out young in the acting world, but then realising he needed a 'back-up' plan to pay the bills, he learned the backstage craft of lighting, sound and general entertainment facilitation. 

But he was always drawn towards the front of the camera, acting, and having a solid background in the crew delivery area, and a little more 'mature' he was able to focus on himself in his later years and get back to the acting world.

Tim is now what they call a 'slashee' or 'slasher' - a developing term for someone that, for example, is an actor/sound-person/grip/editor/lighting etc. etc. .....  an all-rounder, and is very well known in the Adelaide, South Australian acting world, as someone who can deliver it all, sound, lighting, carry it all, and of course, deliver a role/character.

In this episode, we talk about it all, about working in an industry across the board, about supporting others, for their benefit, not expecting reward, or return. Tim is just an exceptional actor, and all rounder.

Episode 5 is  with Andrew Hearle, actor and CEO of the online drama club and acting resource site StageMilk. 

This discussion went in a completely different direction to what I originally thought it would, and in a very enlightening way.  Andrew’s insights into acting in general and with a focus of us late bloomers was just fantastic. So many times in my discussions about my journey as a late bloomer actor, I bring up the negatives of starting acting at such a later part of one's life, but Andrew really looks at some positives, both for the late bloomer actor but also the actors that cross paths with the late bloomer actor and how they benefit from the knowledge of the late bloomer actor.

Much of the discussion centres around Andrew's platform StageMilk, an actors resource he built whilst studying in Perth at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). We discuss the benefits that are available on the website to any actor from around the world. We also discuss the online drama club component of which I have been fortunate to have been a member of for over two years now. We particularly discuss how this has been so valuable to my acting journey and how the community within StageMilk is so beneficial to all actors who partake.

Episode 4 with casting director Greg Apps and host of the online acting training resource The Audition Technique.

I consider Greg a great friend and mentor as he has been a part of my acting journey almost from the commencement of my journey. 

Greg has a wonderfully long history in the Australian television and movie scene, as well as having been involved in some great international productions. He is a wealth of knowledge for actors particularly in the world of auditions. This is where the role journey starts and it is likely the biggest hurdle for most, if not all, actors. Greg always tells it like it is, how do you stand out in the audition room when dozens of other actors are all delivering the same scene.

In this discussion, Greg imparts his knowledge but in a more focused manner addressing the complexities, pros and cons of the acting world for the more mature actors. We particularly discuss the need for a plan B, outside of acting, a pertinent discussion regardless of your position on the acting timeline.

My guest today is a great friend of mine having started out on the late bloomer acting journey with me in 2013 where we met on day 1 of a 12 month acting course in Adelaide. We like to refer to each other as onscreen husband and wife after we performed our first stage experience together for a scene from the play ‘Speaking In Tongues’ by Andrew Bovell. In 2015 she was fortunate to partake in a full-time year long acting program with Melbourne’s ‘Film & Television Studio International’. She continues to participate regularly in acting masterclasses and workshops including the wonderful Anthony Brandon Wong in Sydney as well as having spent almost 2 years in the US exploring the craft. In 2017, now having moved to Sydney Australia, she again stepped on stage for a stand out role in the play Calendar Girls, based on the movie of the same name, a true story of a group of Yorkshire women who produced a nude calendar in 1999 to raise money for leukemia, where she played Celia (described as the show pony of the girls in the story.) This role was described by Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph as “the role she was born to play”.  More recently, she has performed a guest role on the long running series ‘Deadly Women’.  She heralds from England but moved to Australia with her husband and has two wonderful, now grown children. She is also a singer in her own right regularly performing at local gigs.

This (my first episode) is with Eva Grzelak, a great friend of mine having met in 2015 as supporting actors on a MAPS student film in Adelaide, South Australia. A short film called ‘Frequency’ – arguably one of the best short films I’ve been involved in so far, thanks to the up-and-coming Director Rebecca Duncker. 

Eva was born in Cheshire England, a year before me and immigrated to Australia in the mid 70’s with her parents. Her employment background is as an accomplished audio-visual technician which led her into her love of acting. She is a 2019 South Australian Screen Award Nominee for Best Female Performance and also received the Award Of Merit for Acting in the 2020/21 Southern Shorts Awards. She has also written and directed her first short film ‘Untitled Thoughts’ a short film about mental health which has done extremely well on the festival circuit. Nicknamed ‘Harlee’ by childhood friends due to her love of Harley Davidson motorcycles and currently residing in New York, Eva is my first late bloomer actor to join me on the podcast.
