“The Deans do things to the Tigers.” So said the great baseball historian, Fred Lieb, in his iconic book on the Detroit Tigers.

The Dean brothers, Dizzy and Paul, did in fact, do some things. Along with the rest of the legendary St. Louis Cardinal “Gas House Gang” the swaggering Dean brothers would lead their team to the 1934 World Series Championship and break the hearts of a legion Detroit fans.

That being said, the Tigers, nor their fans would simply go gentle into that good night. The team fought tooth-and-nail to the bitter 7th game end while a near-riot by the fans would prompt Commissioner Landis to make an unprecedented decision.

In today’s show, Jamie and Charles will explore the dramatic conclusion of that 1934 season and how it set the stage for the glory of 1935.

Little could they know, however, that something amazing was about to occur. The 1933 Tigers were either too young or too old but the 1934 Tigers would be just the right age to bring the city its first American League Pennant in 25 years. 


It has often been said that the 1934 Tigers were a “distraction” from the Depression. While this is certainly true it does not go far enough in explaining the mania which swept through the city. The 1934 Tigers were not just a distraction - they were an obsession. Why?

Akin to a miracle something incredible began to happen. Detroit began to win in a way that had never been seen before...or since. The Tigers, Lions and Red Wings all won their first Championships. An unknown Joe Louis would rise to international super stardom. Speed boat racing, tennis, track and field, golf, bowling, swimming, firearms...champions all and all from Detroit. In this calendar year the city could claim 33 national championships. A celebration followed that has no equal in the annals of American sport. Holidays were declared, a plaque was signed by the president as well as every governor in the country recognizing Detroit as THE City of Champions...

...and then...the story was forgotten.
