Melissa will share about her extensive background in agriculture and what ultimately led to her the ACI and her appearance on The High Ground podcast. We’ll learn about the makeup of ACI, which is the largest trade association for agribusinesses in Indiana, and ultimately how it impacts state policies and the grower. Melissa will also share how the ACI helps educate policy makers and is able to voice concerns of businesses in a way that’s not connected to the business itself. Finally, Melissa, Sal, and Jeff will discuss the Emerging Professionals Leadership Program (EPLP) which is a year-long program designed to help individuals expand their experience in and knowledge of policy and leadership in the agriculture industry.

Kathy will share about how she ended up working for IRHA and specifically, how she began working with growers and ag businesses in the areas of mental health and suicide.In addition to her QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, you’ll learn how Kathy is equipped to help employers by providing training to assist and refer employees and growers in navigating mental health and stress issues. “Farmers… [are] a demographic that has a high rate of suicide… Yeah, they’re strong, self-sufficient… but they’re also human beings, and we all have our limits.”

Jeff, Sal, and Luke will discuss AgrIInstitute which has been in place since 1982 and exists to help create educational and charitable programs in areas related to agriculture. Luke will share specifically about a program that he’s been participating in called the Indiana Agricultural Leadership Program and the experiences and opportunities it’s provided including an agriculture-based trip to Africa. In addition to learning about the cocoa industry and infrastructure in Ghana, we’ll hear about agriculture in Kenya which is a key contributor to their economy. In this episode, Bob and Sidney will share about their career paths and how they ended up working for INDOT, and Bob will shed some light on how his team evaluates the various INDOT assets to determine what needs to be repaired or replaced. Ryan, Jeff, and Sal will discuss the current cattle market and the reasons the dairy industry has seen major changes in their breeding methods over the last few years. Bailey and Julie will share how they navigated the cold temperatures and large snow event of 2026. Eric will share how his career has evolved over the years and what his transition has looked like as he’s moved into the Director of Operations role. Eric will describe the variety of tasks managers end up tackling to make sure operations are running smoothly. Sal, Eric, and Jeff will also discuss the challenges of training new employees who haven’t had a background on the farm. “Come up with a plan. Get with the account manager or branch manager on what the plan is for the season… You can’t communicate too much in season.”

Jeff, Sal, Ben, and Harold will discuss how Premier will continue to look to advance and protect the interest of the farmer while maintaining the mission and values Premier has had for decades. From skid loader operator to sales and C-store manager, you’ll learn about the variety of careers Ben has had with Premier over the years. “I’ve just always appreciated this employee group that I’ve felt I’ve been able to work alongside… that genuinely cares about the job they do and genuinely cares about each other.”

Jeff, Sal, and Scott will give us an update on the dynamics of the fertilizer industry as a whole and how the digital age has dramatically changed the market’s responses to global events like wars and tariffs. You’ll also learn how countervailing duties impact the agriculture industry in a lasting way and what those do to the cost and availability of fertilizers. Scott will also share how forecasting fertilizer usage has become increasingly difficult and why intel from the growers is so important. “We try to have what they need when they need it and we don’t wanna carry over a bunch of inventory because that hurts our member owners as well when we have added costs that we didn’t need. There’s a lot that goes into it.” 

Lisa will share about her background in marketing and what brought her to Premier Companies. Sal, Jeff, and Lisa will also dig into how the marketing department helps the agronomy department communicate with the growers and learn how the agriculture industry is able to tap into a variety of marketing campaigns to broaden their communication and strengthen relationships. “It doesn’t matter what job you’re in…  we’re all in marketing in some capacity.”

In addition to discussing the projects they’ve procrastinated, Jerry, Sal, and Jeff will discuss Premier’s commitment to safety and give us an idea of some of the safety initiatives Premier has in place. You’ll learn what makes anhydrous ammonia so dangerous, and Jerry will discuss the yearly safety training that is required for employees and available to emergency responders to help keep the public safe. We’ll also hear about the data plates that will be installed on anhydrous ammonia tanks and the information the data plate will share with the State Chemist for recertification. Anhydrous Ammonia can be very dangerous, but “if you handle it correctly, it’s a really safe product.”

Stephanie shares the tragedy that took place that resulted in the death of two of her family members and ultimately led to "The Maverick Minute” which encourages those in the farm world and beyond to pause what they’re doing, inspect their equipment and surroundings, and protect life.  Stephanie and Tony will share how they’re working to get the word out to make The Maverick Minute as recognizable as the pink ribbon for breast cancer.  “You could have all the training in the world, but if you don’t take The Maverick Minute, it can all be for naught.”

Bobby will share how he went from a kid on a farm to a decades-long career at the co-op working in a variety of roles including liquid application, working in the feed mill, and eventually to his current role as a Certified Crop Advisor and account manager.  From advancements in technology to the increase in no-till farming, Jeff, Sal, and Bobby will discuss changes in farming practices and operations.  You’ll also hear Bobby’s unique perspective as a family farmer and Orange County Soil and Water Conservation board member who is also an account manager at Premier. “What you’re buying is the same thing I’m buying… I’m putting my bottom line into what I’m trying to sell them.”

In addition to hearing a story about a slightly feral potbelly pig, You’ll hear about their career trajectories and the variety of responsibilities Bailey and Julie have in their roles.  You’ll learn how the Keep Full program works, how they estimate propane usage based on previous history and temperatures, and learn about the most rewarding and most challenging parts of their roles.  Just a few minutes in, you’ll understand why Sal called Bailey and Julie your new favorite guests!

In addition to discussing the Farmer Bridge Payment, Jeff, Sal, and Aaron will discuss current grain markets and how the New World Screwworm has impacted the grain export pace.  Aaron will also share why there’s a bit of a weird dynamic with China’s grain purchases and why the bean market has been on such a rollercoaster.  On top of all of that, you’ll get a crash course in grain handling hazards and equipment that will help you monitor your in-farm storage.  “You don’t want grain quality getting away from you right now.  You’ll pay for it later on.”

You’ll also learn about the WISE (Women in Sustainability Experience) network and how it’s designed to help women find a space for networking and peer relationships in that segment of the industry.  Sal, Jeff, and Sarah Beth will also discuss the leadership gap and opportunities that exist with those who don’t have farming backgrounds but do have an interest in agriculture. “We can be real snobbish about ag knowledge…  I think the closest thing we can do for that leadership gap is to take up a mantle of mentorship.” 

Glenn, Sal, and Jeff discuss phytotoxins and how cereal rye contributes to their presence in the field.  Glenn will also share why a grower might want to avoid planting corn immediately following wheat or cereal rye and the steps to take if it’s unavoidable.  In addition to learning how weather impacts the rotting of the cereal grain and the vigor of the new crop, Glenn will teach us how Ascend2 and Ascend ST3 can help a grower in the transition between cover crop and corn.  From discussions around IRAC (Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) and compounds that crystallize in an insect’s gut to an otter’s poop dance, you’ll hear why “it comes around to poop in almost every conversation!”

Aaron will share how the government shutdown impacted October information including inspection data, and why the corn market is getting a temporary boost. Sal, Jeff, and Aaron will dig into the stocks-to-use rate for beans and you’ll learn why it’s tighter than it’s been in the last few years in the United States.  They’ll also discuss why there’s been over a dollar rally in soybeans and why it continues to be important for growers to understand and know their targets. “There are some highlights… When we have these good days or this good month of bean rallies or even corn hanging around as strong as it has been, it gives you an opportunity to take some risk off the table.”

Congresswoman Houchin serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Budget Committee and the Rules Committee, and because of that, she’s on the trifecta of committees for budget reconciliation and will provide a glimpse into how the government is working to find savings while still protecting the individuals who need assistance.  She’ll also give an update on the Farm Bill and the upcoming large issues she’ll be working to address.  “What I try to do in my approach is to get as much information as I can to make the best decision that I can to help the most people that I can…”

Heather will share with us about the Juntos program which exists to help students gain the skills and resources to help them graduate high school and open up a new realm of career and academic opportunities upon graduation.  You’ll also learn about the programs that exist for the families of students in the Juntos program and the Next Chapter, a program through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, that exists to increase the employability skills and readiness for the workforce or additional studies.  “We’re really trying to give those kids practical skills that they’ll use…  We’re really preparing these kids for life and work.”

You’ll learn the ins and outs of SwineLink, a wean-to-finish program, and how it’s designed to get the younger generation back on the farm with more income streams.  Dan, Jeff, and Sal will explain how the sow share system works to allow the production of pigs that will be brought in and finished out as part of SwineLink.  You’ll learn how the pigs are raised and the automated systems that are installed in the barns and the processes involved to keep the pigs healthy and the facilities free from contamination.  Dan will also share what happens before the next group of pigs arrives to keep the barns clean and make sure the pigs will have a safe environment.  Curious about what’s happening in the swine market?  They’ll tackle that topic as well!  “The biggest thing for us, from a profitability standpoint, is to keep the pigs healthy…”

Josh, Jeff, and Sal dig into what has caused the fertilizer market to struggle so much this year.  You’ll hear about how low inventories, import and export issues, and spring production issues have combined to cause the perfect storm within the industry.  They’ll talk specifically about the high Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) prices and why they think there’s no reason to anticipate correction before summer.  They’ll also discuss the countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizers and why there’s reason to believe this won’t stay tough forever.  Until that time, like Josh says, “This will be probably the biggest standoff we have ever seen between buyers and sellers…”

Don describes some of the chaos happening in the ag department and the unknowns associated with the budget cuts and the challenges that have occurred as a result of that.  You’ll learn more about how the Department of Agriculture works with some of Indiana’s regulatory agencies and how tariffs are impacting the agriculture industry.  Sal, Jeff, and Don will tackle tough topics like the urban sprawl, increased wages for H-2A workers, and what’s happening with the idea to create a water pipeline to move water to Boone County, Indiana.  “We’re in a very, very interesting time, and I think the people that would say, ‘Here’s where we’re going’ don’t really know.  We’re all a little bit riding the waves right now…”

Today, you’ll learn about the technology and regulations changes that have changed the application of herbicides and suggestions for growers as they think through that process coming off of the windiest April on record.  Glenn will share how drift reduction technology has helped keep the peace between neighbors and how understanding Pulse Width Modulation (PMW) can help growers make sure their fields are getting the appropriate amount of herbicide.  “21st century technology is doing some wonderful things to make growers’ lives easier and really do a better job of getting herbicides where they’re supposed to be, and that’s in the fields and not on the neighbor.”

On today’s episode, we’ll dive into current events in agronomy including changes that may occur in agriculture due to the presidential change and why Glenn sees some parallels to what was experienced in the past.  Glenn will share his thoughts regarding what inputs you should prioritize first and what is most important to do to the crop to increase the yield and make a grower a better steward of the environment and crop.  We’ll learn more about what biological biostimulants are, what they do, and why they have become the wild west of agriculture.  “I can’t think of anything that is harder on the environment, really, than organic farming.”

Aaron will share the updates from the November WASDE report including yield, demand, and the stocks-to-use ratio.  You’ll take a look at what’s happened in the past and how our corn is used domestically and globally and the types of events that could impact overall demand.  In addition to discussing the overall outlook for the grain industry in light of the presidential election, he’ll also show why it’s important to keep an eye on the oil prices and the correlation to corn usage.  “The market is an emotionless animal.  It doesn’t care how you feel…  We get caught up in projecting our own emotions, our own thoughts, onto a free market that only cares about the numbers or geopolitical headline news.” 

In addition to learning about his background in agronomy and agriculture, you’ll hear how he ended up in the Department of Agriculture and ultimately the Agribusiness Council of Indiana.  Bruce will explain how the ag retail industry has the same concerns as the growers, what’s been done in 2024, and what’s top of mind for the Agribusiness Council as we head into 2025.  You’ll learn how the council has worked in education around pesticides and how they’ve weighed in on the legislature in Indiana.  From the opportunity to learn about the Emerging Professionals Leadership Program and land usage with the LEAP District to how the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) can assess the trade offs for moving farm land to solar farms or warehouses, this episode packs a punch.  “A farm is a business…  That farmland is not just waiting to be developed!”

On today’s episode, you’ll learn more about Glenn and Joe’s background, education, and career history.  You’ll learn about the soil sampling process, the nutrients that are tested, and how the results are analyzed.  They’ll also share how the system knows where each sample came from, how that informs the nutrient applications, and how the CropLink platform can provide data from current and previous years to help growers maximize their yield.  When it comes to utilizing TRAX and Croplink to make sure growers are planting and fertilizing in the appropriate amounts and locations, perhaps Glenn says it best.  “If Joe had more hair, they’d call him Goldilocks.  They don’t put on too much, they don’t put on too little, it’s just right.”

Dan, Jeff, and Sal will share some insight into the feed efficiency and barn management practices in addition to the changes Premier has seen in the number of hogs in their program.  You’ll also hear how Swinelink works and how growers can benefit from their participation in that program to have steady income without the risk of hog ownership.  Dan will also recap Premier’s care philosophy and how they ensure their livestock are being cared for properly including the steps taken to minimize the spread of disease.  “A healthy happy pig is gonna perform the best, and we’re gonna make the most money off of that…  So that’s our goal, is to keep them as comfortable and happy as possible.”

Andy gives us updates on the 2023 Farm Bill, which will be the largest farm bill ever passed, and the challenges that exist with the appropriations process.  He’ll also share some of the contents of the farm bill including the infrastructure pieces, affordable childcare, commodities, and nutrition.  On a state level, you’ll learn more about the push for transparency, the water task force, personal property rights, and the need for a robust testing facility.  “We may not have all the answers… but the resources that we can bring to bear, and the collective resources… members aren’t creating the wheel every time.”

Heather shares about her career path, including how her experience in the classroom combined with her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration fit perfectly with her current 4-H Educator role.  You’ll learn about what the 4-H program is and how it was born, and how it allows youth to explore their passions.  Katie will share how Premier Companies has been able to come alongside the local 4-H programs in Southern Indiana to impact the most children possible.  Premier’s contribution to 4-H has already impacted several thousand children.  “That gift has truly been transformational for Southern Indiana!”
