Ingredients (for 1 Twitty Burger)

4 oz. patty ground sirloin
1 large pineapple ring (we used two on ours, for what its worth)
Graham cracker crumbs and shortening for the pineapple crusting and deep frying
2 slices of bacon, fried crisp
Hamburger bun and mayonnaise on both bun slices

Directions:

cook patty of ground sirloin as desired
batter the pineapple ring with graham cracker crumbs and deep fry that sucker
Then put it all together with the bacon, bun, etc. (You know how to make a sandwich.)
EAT! Bask in the glory of your creation. Tells us what you think!

Chris Canterbury, our first-non comedian guest, is a singer-songwriter in Nashville by way of his native Louisiana. This week finally covers one of the Kings of Country Music, the Man in Black himself: Johnny Cash. It was not an easy task narrowing down which of Cash's many excellent songs would be the first of his to add to our Ultimate Country Music Playlist (TM), but we decided to go with his recording of "Folsom Prison Blues" from his legendary live album, At Folsom Prison. We discuss how "Folsom Prison Blues," one of his earliest songs, became an enduring statement of his empathy for the incarcerated throughout his career. We also go through the dynamic shifts in his Folsom Prison concert setlist and talk about the lesser-appreciated concept albums that even predate his Man in Black persona.

This week Danny and Tyler chat about country-rock pioneers, The Flying Burrito Brothers with standup, author, and drummer, Sam Tallent! (@SamTallent, Running the Light, Chubby Behemoth Podcast)

Sam talks to the boys about the lyrical versatility of “Sin City”, FBB’s traceable influence on artists like The Eagles, Orville Peck, and The Flaming Lips, and why he should have played football for Harvard. “Sin City,” a semi-apocalyptic semi-waltz that happens to be the Flying Burrito Brothers’ signature song, is from the group’s 1969 debut album (an album which somehow has still not sold enough to be certified gold, despite its influence).

Call it “Cosmic American Music” or call it “Country with a better backbeat,” but thanks to Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman’s infusion of psychedelic rock and blues (with some help from Sneaky Pete!), we have some of the most enduring country songs ever recorded.

You've almost certainly heard this song before, but it's such a *classic* that one might forget that it is in fact a *country* song. RIP to Hargus "Pig" Robbins (January 18, 1938 - January 30, 2022), who was mentioned in this episode (recorded in fall 2021). The Hall of Famer played not only with Sturgill Simpson, but with Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, and just about everybody else. One of the best pianists of any genre.

9: "Finally Friday" by George Jones

Johnny Cash once said, "When people ask me who my favorite country singer is, I say, 'You mean besides George Jones?'"

This week Danny and Tyler discuss the legendary George Jones, often considered to have the greatest voice in all of country music. And while there are over a dozen #1 country hits to choose from in Jones’ catalog, the song of the week is “Finally Friday,” the lesser-known closing track from Jones’ 1992 album, Walls Can Fall (released the same year Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame).

“Finally Friday” is sung as if it’s a weekly celebration Jones has been partaking in for decades. And even though he didn’t write this track, Danny and Tyler tell stories of Jones’ antics, adventures, and struggles which suggest he very well could have.

This week spotlights Loretta Lynn’s 1975 crossover hit, “The Pill,” one of the most controversial country singles of all time. To discuss Loretta, birth control, and the normalizing of sexual health education, Danny and Tyler are joined by the brilliant and hilarious Alex Kumin (@alexkumin, Comedy Central, Comedians You Should Know).

Everyone from Owen Bradley to Reba McEntire to Jack White says that Loretta Lynn is one of the smartest country songwriters of all time, and they’d all agree she’s a fearless badass too. According to Tyler Mahan Coe, Loretta Lynn had more songs banned from radio than all male country artists in the 20th century combined. What gets a female vocalist banned from country music radio? What makes a woman "radical" within a male-dominated industry? Is wanting birth control even controversial? Give this week’s episode a listen, where we answer those questions.

7: "Vaping on the Job" by Dougie Poole

On this week’s episode Danny and Tyler take it way, way, waaaaay back to the year 2020 and discuss the clever, catchy, and all-too-relatable “Vaping on the Job” by Dougie Poole. Poole is a singer-songwriter living in Brooklyn who approaches country as an experimental music form, often incorporating drum machines and synthesizers into his music. He sings about the financial struggles of young creatives, love in the digital age, and big city living—but don’t be fooled into thinking his music or lyrics are any less country than Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakam.

The boys chat about their own methods of escapism while at work, the importance of pooping on the clock, and which of Poole’s lyrics hit them the hardest.

5: "Seven Spanish Angels" by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, w/ David Gborie

Willie Nelson once said Ray Charles did more for country music than any single artist has ever done. On this week’s episode, comedian David Gborie (@coolguyjokes87, Comedy Central, All Fantasy Everything) joins Danny and Tyler to explore Ray Charles’ tremendous impact on country music, and the largely overlooked and unsung early black influence on the genre.

Ray Charles and Willie Nelson are both titans of the music world, and were friends in real life, and so it is very fitting that together they sang the best song on Ray’s country album, “Friendship.” The boys talk about story and lyrics of “Seven Spanish Angels,” what makes someone a “Chris Gaines-type,” George Jones and Ray gettin’ into antics, and fighting drunk horses. There’s some serious stuff, some silly stuff, and it’s a hootin’ hollerin’ good time.
