Our innovative approach to reducing hospital admissions

Hillingdon Hospitals' latest podcast episode spotlights the Trust's innovative approach to admission avoidance, featuring insights from Duncan Alston, geriatrician, and Usman Ahmed, consultant in acute and general medicine.

The discussion centered on recent efforts to reduce unnecessary hospital stays by optimising outpatient and rapid access care. Duncan shared findings from a recent audit, which revealed that nearly half of admitted patients could have been managed as outpatients. This has driven a strategic shift toward providing more care outside the traditional inpatient setting.

There are three main criteria for hospital admission: physiological instability, specific treatment needs such as oxygen therapy, and significant social or mobility challenges. Patients who do not meet these criteria are now being offered safer and faster outpatient alternatives, reflecting a commitment to both patient well-being and hospital efficiency.

Usman highlighted the success of the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) clinic, which now sees up to 70 patients daily. This service has significantly reduced pressure on the emergency department (ED), contributing to Hillingdon’s recognition as one of London’s best-performing EDs. The conversation also covered the hospital’s rollout of virtual wards, which use remote monitoring technology to track patients’ health at home across a range of specialties, including general medicine, diabetes, cardiology, respiratory, and paediatrics.

To support these initiatives, staff can now access detailed referral pathways and criteria through the Eolas app (available on the trust website in the applications page, or available to download from the app store and sign in using your NHS login), streamlining the process for admission avoidance and ensuring patients receive the most appropriate care in the right setting.

Digital consent: a benefit for our patients and clinicians

We have started using digital consent for procedures in our hospitals, using a system called Concentric. Concentric is a clinically-led application, with a proven track record, that seamlessly integrates with other digital systems to provide the patient and the Trust with an online record of consent.

In this podcast we hear from Paula Galea, Consultant Obstetrician and Trust Digital Lead for Consent, about the new process for patient consent.

Patients can be confident that they have been given all the necessary information they need, in advance of their treatment. The consent can then be shared to their NHS app and on the NHS patient care systems for complete clarity.

Co-Designing the Future of Stroke Rehabilitation

In this podcast, Heraldas Gaspariunas, Co-founder and COO at Reneural, is joined by Dr Gabriella Spinelli, Reader in Healthcare Design and Innovation at the Brunel Design School, part of the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University of London and Director of RADIANT CERSI, a centre for regulatory science and innovation in digital health and healthcare AI.

The conversation focuses on a new collaboration between Reneural, The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Brunel University London, supported by NHS England through the New Hospital Programme. Together, the partners are developing a clinician dashboard that works alongside Reneural’s virtual reality rehabilitation platform. The goal is to support occupational therapists and physiotherapists in delivering more effective remote care for stroke survivors.

Gabriella shares her insights on the importance of academic research in shaping digital health solutions and the value of collaboration between universities, the NHS, and industry. The discussion also touches on how projects like this can support faster adoption of innovation within the NHS and improve patient outcomes through thoughtful, research-driven design.

This episode highlights the potential of partnerships to bring meaningful change to stroke care and digital health across the system.

Working with Reneural on a virtual reality solution for stroke rehabilitation

We are working in collaboration with Reneural and Brunel University to develop an innovative tool for stroke rehabilitation. With funding from the New Hospital Programme, we are undertaking a pivotal initiative aiming to transform stroke rehabilitation through a clinician dashboard that enhances remote interaction, treatment, and monitoring for stroke survivors.

This project directly supports occupational therapists and physiotherapists by providing a digital platform integrated with Reneural’s Virtual Reality rehabilitation system.

New online Learning Hub for our staff

We celebrated a wonderful evening of staff awards, with winners announced in an exciting ceremony. Listen online for the winners, hearing from the staff who nominated them.

There were nearly 300 nominations for our awards, over eight different categories – a record number. This reflects the amazing work that our staff do every day. Five of the categories reflect the core CARES values that our staff live by every day. Staff could also be nominated for a CEO’s Award for Dedication and Achievement, or a Board Award. We have become the latest of over 90 NHS Trusts to partner with AccessAble; the UK’s leading provider of detailed disabled access information.

Working with AccessAble, we have created detailed access guides to facilities, wards, and departments at Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital.

The guides are 100 per cent facts, figures and photographs to help patients, visitors and staff plan their journeys to and around the hospital sites, covering everything from parking facilities and hearing loops, to walking distances and accessible toilets.

We know everyone’s accessibility needs are different, which is why having detailed, accurate information is so important. It’s why all of the details you’ll find in the guide have been checked in person, on site, by trained surveyors.

Multicultural network for staff - what's it about?

Eleanor Loudon from our Speech and Language Therapy Team tells us about the service

Our Speech and Language Therapy Team at Hillingdon Hospitals is relatively small, and split into acute with three therapists and the Rehabilitation Unit. Stroke and Alderbourne and the Daniels Unit over at Mount Vernon Hospital with another 3 therapists.

Referrals from all over the adult adult wards when people are concerned that their patients may have a swallowing difficulty and that there's a risk of what we call aspiration. So that is when food or drink might be going down onto the lungs. So a speech therapist will come and do an assessment of someone, swallow and try and reduce the risk of things going down the wrong way, which essentially has an associated positive.

Staff Awards winner of Special Award goes to PATCH Team

PATCH stands for Providing Assessment & Treatment for Children at Home and they recently won the Special award at our Staff Awards 2022.

They won this award because of all work hard they put in to run the service and to make developments for ongoing improvement. They have expanded their service to incorporate community integration with primary care.

The PATCH Team provide assessment and treatment for children at home.

PATCH nurses do this by working closely with the hospital medical team to enable acutely ill children to be cared for in the comfort of their home whilst they recover which means shorter stays in A&E and earlier discharge home from the ward so less time spent in hospital.

PATCH will continue to monitor and care for these children at home by supporting and empowering parents to help in their care whilst their child recovers before discharging them back to GP care.

Support from our Centre for Spiritual and Pastoral Care over Christmas

The chaplaincy in our hospital Trust has the title of the Centre for Spiritual and Pastoral Care - it is as an all-inclusive centre for support.

Every year in the hospital here at Hillingdon we have a feature called the Giving Tree in the Chapel. Predominantly staff, but also members of the public are incredibly generous in bringing items that really are for patients who come into hospital over Christmas and maybe didn't have time to pack a bag or they were rushed into hospital.

The Team are there to support staff, patient and visitors who ask for our service. Working closely with the palliative care team, to lend a listening ear to someone who wants to chat, supporting people of any religious background or spiritual background or the non-religious.

New Maternity Bereavement Suite at Hillingdon Hospital - Baby Loss Awareness Week 2022

The Maternity Department at Hillingdon Hospital provides maternity support for up to 5,000 mothers and babies each year. Whilst most women go into pregnancy expecting healthy babies, sadly some couples lose a baby.

I’m Lucy Wills and I have with me today Shirley Clipp, Major Appeals Manager, and Priya Vara, a mother of three born at Hillingdon Hospital, one of whom was still born. They are here to talk about our new Materniy Bereavement Suite at Hillingdon Hospital.

The Suite was funded jointly by Hillingdon Hospitals Charity and the hospital Trust.

The charity has raised over £200k to fund the Bereavement Suite, giving families the valuable space to mourn the loss of a baby.

Fraud Awareness - Mandate Fraud

The NHS has experienced an increase in several types of fraud since the start of the pandemic and everyone should remain vigilant.

Mandate fraud occurs when someone contacts an NHS organisation with an urgent request to change a direct debit, standing order or bank transfer mandate, by purporting to be from a genuine supplier that regular payments are made to. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the urgent nature of such requests is likely to appear more pressing and convincing. If the organisation accepts the fraudulent request, the payments are then diverted into the criminal’s bank account. The genuine supplier details are usually obtained from a range of sources including corrupt staff, publicly announced contracts and online logs of supplier contracts.

Celebrating International Day of Happiness with Mindfulness

In this podcast, Peter Hemler, NHS mindfulness practitioner for the Keeping Well North West London services discusses the benefits mindfulness can have towards your happiness!

If you're an member of staff at our Trust remember you can join Peter’s weekly mindfulness groups – all online and free! We’re offering all health and social care colleagues free 30 mins or one hour mindfulness sessions with NHS experienced practitioner Peter Helmer.

The aim is to make staff feeling well and relaxed at work.
Mondays - 10am to 11am, 12pm to 12.30pm and 6pm to 6.30pm
Thursday - 12 noon to 12.30pm
Friday - 3pm to 4pm
