We're wrapping up John Woo-LY 2026 with what many consider to be the definitive John Woo film: The Killer (1989).

This isn't just another great Hong Kong action movie. It's arguably the purest expression of John Woo's creative vision—the film where he had almost complete artistic control from start to finish, refining everything that made him one of the most influential action directors of all time. Heroic Bloodshed. Dual pistols. Slow motion. Brotherhood. Betrayal. White doves. It's all here.

And it's an absolute banger.

In fact, The Killer is so good that we felt it deserved its own dedicated episode, even though we already talked about it while reviewing John Woo's 2024 American remake. (Let's just pretend that one never happened.)

Starring Chow Yun-fat as the legendary assassin Ah Jong alongside Danny Lee and Sally Yeh in her final film role, The Killer follows a hitman determined to make amends after accidentally blinding an innocent nightclub singer during one of his assignments. As rival gangs, corrupt cops, and old loyalties begin to close in around him, the lines between hero and villain become increasingly blurred.

Next up on John Woo-LY 2026 is Hard Target (1993), John Woo's explosive first foray into Hollywood. And who better to help introduce Woo to the American film industry than the all-American action hero of the '90s... Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Hard Target is widely regarded as the first major Hollywood studio film directed by a Chinese—and more broadly, an Asian—director. Universal reportedly had concerns about whether Woo could direct a big-budget American production with his limited English, but he answered those doubts the only way he knew how: with slow-motion doves, flying motorcycles, dual pistols, ridiculous explosions, and enough John Woo style to make Hard Target stand out among the sea of '90s action movies.

The film follows Chance Boudreaux, a Cajun drifter who finds himself in the crosshairs of an international human-hunting syndicate led by the wonderfully theatrical Emil Fouchon, played by Lance Henriksen. Unfortunately for them, Chance turns out to be a considerably harder target than advertised.

In this review, we discuss John Woo's transition from Hong Kong cinema to Hollywood, Jean-Claude Van Damme's performance, the villains, the action choreography, the unmistakable "John Woo-isms" that survived the move to America, and whether Hard Target still ranks among the best action films of the 1990s.

Say what you will about Van Damme... the man can wear the heck out of a mullet.

We're continuing John Woo-LY 2026 with perhaps the strangest film in John Woo's entire filmography.

Heroes Shed No Tears (1984) wasn't a passion project. It was a movie made out of contractual obligation, shelved for two years by its production company, and only released after the enormous success of A Better Tomorrow turned John Woo into one of Hong Kong cinema's hottest directors. It's safe to say this is the John Woo film he would probably rather you forgot.

The film follows a group of mercenaries on a mission deep into hostile territory to rescue a powerful crime lord. What begins as a straightforward military operation quickly descends into a chaotic survival story filled with relentless action, jungle warfare, and some of the most unexpectedly unhinged tonal shifts you'll ever see in an action movie.

In this review, we discuss the film's bizarre production history, its blend of action, comedy, and shocking violence, whether traces of the classic "John Woo touch" are already beginning to emerge, and if there's a genuinely good movie buried beneath the rushed production.

It's messy. It's weird. It occasionally feels like three different films stitched together. But is there still something worth discovering in one of John Woo's most overlooked movies?

Welcome to John Woo-LY 2026, where for the month of July we're celebrating the legendary director of Hong Kong action cinema, John Woo. Every week we'll be revisiting one of his defining films and asking the important questions: do they still hold up, and where do they rank in one of cinema's greatest filmographies?

We're kicking things off with A Better Tomorrow (1986), the film that launched John Woo into stardom and popularised the Heroic Bloodshed subgenre. If you've ever wondered where slow-motion gunfights, dual pistols, and tragic bromances came from, this is a very good place to start.

Starring the holy trinity of Hong Kong cinema - Ti Lung, Leslie Cheung, and Chow Yun-fat as the legendary Mark Gor - and developed by the dynamic duo of Tsui Hark and John Woo (before the falling out), A Better Tomorrow has everything: melodrama, two-gun action, unforgettable one-liners, and enough brotherly angst to power an entire decade of action movies.

The story follows Ho, a triad gangster who, after serving three years in prison, tries to leave his criminal past behind and reconcile with his younger brother Kit, who is a police officer. Two Asian Blokes Podcast returns with Korean cinema hype, Fantastic Film Festival highlights, and one of the strangest J-horror comedies we’ve seen in a while.

We kick things off by talking about several upcoming South Korean films that already have us cautiously optimistic. There’s Hope from Na Hong-jin, best known for The Wailing, The Brigands of Rattlecreek from Park Chan-wook of Oldboy fame, and Colony from Yeon Sang-ho, director of Train to Busan. In other words, South Korean genre cinema continues to refuse to slow down.

After that, we dive into this year’s Fantastic Film Festival, where we caught retrospective screenings of Ichi the Killer and Love Exposure, alongside newer releases like The Girl Who Stole Time, a visually stunning 2025 Chinese animated film, and About a Place in the Kinki Region, a Japanese found footage horror movie that quietly gets under your skin.

Then we get to the main review of the episode: New Group, a satirical Japanese horror-comedy directed by rising filmmaker Yuta Shimotsu. The film follows introverted high schooler Ai and rebellious transfer student Yu as they navigate a deeply bizarre social phenomenon where classmates and community members transform into mindless followers obsessed with forming grotesque human pyramids.

Subtlety is not on the menu here. New Group wears its themes directly on its sleeve, swings hard at conformity and social pressure, and somehow becomes more effective because of it. It’s strange, funny, uncomfortable, and exactly the kind of movie we love talking about on this podcast.

In this episode of Two Asian Blokes, we kick things off with a quick chat about the announcement of a new Evangelion series and the online backlash surrounding a K-Pop festival planned at Belfast. After that, we dive into our main topic: a spoiler-free review and discussion of the Chinese live-action adaptation of Blades of the Guardians.

Based on the popular Chinese comic series, Blades of the Guardians brings martial arts spectacle back to the big screen with a stacked lineup of talent across generations of action cinema. Featuring performances from Wu Jing and a long-awaited return from Jet Li, with legendary action choreography from Yuen Woo-ping acting as director, the film carries the legacy of wuxia filmmaking on its shoulders.

So the question becomes: does it deliver?

In this episode, we break down what works in Blades of the Guardians and where it struggles. We discuss the performances, the costuming and production design, the storytelling, and of course the action sequences. In this week's episode of Two Asian Blokes, we took a look at a couple of hot South Korean Netflix titles that explore politics, deception, and systemic corruption for the sake of saving face... not really, though.

First we take a look at Good News, a dark comedy political thriller directed by Byun Sung-hyun (Kill Boksoon), starring Hong Kyun and Sul Kyung-gu. In the 1970s, hijackers take over a Japanese flight. They demand a course to Pyongyang, but a mysterious mastermind devises an absurd plan to divert the plane to Seoul. Spook-tober - The Medium REVIEW! Thailand's answer to The Wailing

This week for Spook-tober we are joined by special guest Chad from the Cheers Big Ears Podcast to talk about The Medium (2021), a criminally unseen, joint Thai-South Korean production from Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter), produced and co-written by South Korean director Na Hong-jin (The Wailing).

The movie, ร่างทรง Rang Song, tells the story of Nim, the local shaman of a small Isan village, as she struggles with a possession case that hits too close to home. The film utilises the found-footage format of movies like Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch project, and combines it seamlessly with the local folklore of The Wailing to create an original piece that is both entertaining and rich in depth.

Chad brings his expertise as a lover of Asian horror cinema and a frequent traveller to Thailand to analyse this films strengths and weaknesses - and of course, to develop the traditional Two Asian Blokes Bad Hollywood Remake.

Spook-tober - Three... Extremes REVIEW! A "nice" sample plate of Asian cinema

For this week's episode of Spook-tober, we are joined by Kyle of the What Kind of Asian Are You? podcast. Kyle specializes in sharing stories of Asian diaspora from all across the globe, so we thought it would be fitting for him to help us talk about an anthology film featuring three short films from three acclaimed directors from three different parts of East Asia - this is Three... Extremes.

The first film we talk about is Dumplings from Hong Kong director, Fruit Chan - the story of a fading actress trying desperately to cling to her youth by eating dumplings that contain a secret and forbidden ingredient.

The second film is Cut, directed by South Korean director Park Chan-wook, starring Lee Byung-hun (of KPop Demon Hunters fame). This short tells the story of a film director forced to make an impossible life-or-death decision.

The third and final film in the anthology is Box, directed by legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike. This is a haunting, yet trippy, story of a young novelist who has to reconcile with her guilt over the death of her twin sister.

Kyle brings his experience with Hong Kong, Korean and Japanese cinema in order to analyze these three extreme short films.

In the first of a series of guest episodes we have leading up to Halloween, we invited Nick Sheist of the Bad Movies We Love podcast onto the show to watch and share his thoughts on Takashi Miike's 2012 thriller Lesson of Evil.

Based on Yusuke Kishi's novel of the same name, this film has been criticised for its debatable taste in the handling of sensitive topics - if you know you know. Because of this it was banished to the realm of cult cinema like many Miike joints before it.

With a screenplay from the writer of Speed (1994) and the director of Hard Boiled (1992), this production was primed for success.

A smash hit in China but a dismal failure in The West, The Myth sees Jackie Chan take on two roles, a modern day archeologist and a Qin Dynasty warrior over two millenniums ago.

In this episode we celebrate our return from Japan with two movies - one centred around two Japanese schoolgirls and one where the opening scene involves a bunch of Yakuza getting killed.

Look Back is a 2024 Japanese animated coming-of-age drama film based on the one-shot web manga of the same name by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The two main characters, Fujino and Kyomoto couldn't be more different, yet their shared passion for drawing manga unites these two small-town girls. This movie is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

The Shadow Strays is a 2024 Indonesian action crime thriller film written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto. The film sees Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin, suspended due to a sloppy mission in Japan. She meets 11-year-old Monji, who loses his mother, and sets out to rescue him. This movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

125 – Halloween Special! Strange Darling, The Substance, Speak No Evil, In A Violent Nature, and The Handsome Guys

In this week's Halloween Special we reviewed five big spooky releases of this season! No spoilers unless otherwise stipulated.

Strange Darling - a 2023 American thriller film written and directed by JT Mollner and starring Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer's vicious murder spree.

The Substance - a 2024 satirical body horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore and Margeret Qualley. Elisabeth Sparkle, renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself.

Speak No Evil - a 2024 American psychological horror thriller film written and directed by James Watkins, starring James McAvoy, Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis. A remake of the 2022 Danish-Dutch film the film sees dream holiday turns into a living nightmare when an American couple and their daughter spend the weekend at a British family's idyllic country estate.

In A Violent Nature - a 2024 Canadian slasher film written and directed by Chris Nash, and starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, and Lauren-Marie Taylor. When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.

Handsome Guys (핸섬가이즈) - a 2024 South Korean black comedy horror film written and directed by Nam Dong-hyeop, starring Lee Sung-min, Lee Hee-joon, Gong Seung-yeon, Park Ji-hwan, and Lee Kyu-hyung. A remake of the 2010 Canadian horror-comedy film Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, the film centres around self-proclaimed tough guy 'Jae-pil' and 'Sang-gu' who finally move into their dream European-style house, when unwanted visitors arrive, awakening a sealed evil spirit in the basement.

123 - The Killer (2024) vs The Crow (2024)! Battle of the BAD remakes

In this week's episode we had a big whinge about two bad modern remakes of classic films from the 80s and 90s, John Woo's The Killer and as Rupert Sanders' The Crow.

The Killer (2024) is directed by John Woo and stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Sam Worthington. It is a remake of the 1989 classic also directed by John Woo, starring Chow Yun Fat, about a professional killer who accidentally blinds a woman while on a job.

The Crow (2024) is directed by Rupert Sanders and stars Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs. It is a remake of the 1994 cult classic directed by Alex Proyas, starring Brandon Lee, about a musician who after being murdered alongside his lover, is resurrected as an immortal avenger to exact vengeance on those that wronged him.

Spoiler alert: we prefer the originals.

Trap (2024) is a tense thriller about a serial killer escaping from a pop concert. Starring Josh Hartnett and one of M. Night Shyamalan's daughters, M. Night self-funded this odd duck of a movie as a means to support his daughter Saleeka's singing career.

Ma Da: The Drowning Spirit (2024) is a Vietnamese ghost story about a malevolent spirit that haunts the Mekong River.

Alien: Romulus is the good one.

Third World Romance (2023) is a Filipino romance film written and directed by Dwein Baltazar, starring Charlie Dizon and Carlo Aquino. The film centres an outspoken cashier and a laid-back grocery bagger as they navigate the path to happiness, despite the challenges of blue-collared living in a world where nothing comes for free.

This is one of the best romance films we've seen this year.

The film centres around M, a university dropout low on money and luck, volunteers to take care of his terminally ill Amah in the hopes for an inheritance.

This is one of the very few movies that could squeeze tears from Danh's cold, unfeeling eyes.
