 “I told my friend Rod Thomas a.k.a. Bright Light Bright Light the idea for this song and he said, ‘You must do it!’ The next day my horoscope literally said, ‘Roll out the red carpet, now is your time’,” laughs New Yorker, multifaceted artist, powerhouse performer and certified redhead BRIDGET BARKAN about the inspiration for her new single “RED CARPET” which is released today independently.

A campy, ‘70s-infused R&B funk track sprinkled with ‘80s soulful sass, “Red Carpet” serves as a defiant, high-energy theme for self-validation, artistic autonomy, and a tongue-in-cheek anthem for gingers everywhere. In the spirit of retro music, Bridget recorded old school style along with cinematic funk jazz group The Brothers Nylon and singer/songwriter Alex Cherny - one take to tape with horns, synths and background vocals from fellow NYC musician friends Tony and the Kiki, Storm Marrero and Mariela Olivo in post-production. Adding a bit of extra mojo from Morgan Wiley (Hercules and Love Affair) on piano, percussion, sounds and beats (who mixed the record as well), “Red Carpet” offers high camp while grasping tightly to a built-in pop shimmer from all the collaborative glitter.

Currently co-fronting platinum-selling, international pop sensations Scissor Sisters (for whom she originally served as backup singer for brazen Ana Matronic) alongside the flashy Jake Shears, Bridget carries over that band’s sparkle and drama into her own music. “I learned so much from Ana touring with them back in 2010-2013,” she says. “She’s always supported me as a sister and I love her so much. I’ve always called her 'Minister Matronic'.”

Originally inspired from a playful introduction by Jake Shears (who famously dubbed her “the hostess with the most tits”), Bridget took his words “she doesn’t need a red carpet because she’s already got one” and embraced the cheeky imagery, transforming it into a profound meditation on her journey as an artist. “Being in the industry my whole life and having a lot of rejection and heartbreak or even being unseen and unheard at times, I often didn’t believe in myself anymore,” she confesses. “I had to take the things that I love and juice them with this humor and sass and make a mantra for myself.”

A staple of the New York performance scene, Barkan’s career spans film, television, theatre, burlesque, and performance art. Following her tenure as a background vocalist for the Scissor Sisters (2010–2013), she stepped into the spotlight in 2025 as a co-lead singer when the band returned from hiatus. Her recent trajectory has been meteoric, including a massive successful 2025 UK arena and US tour co-headlining with Kesha, where she commanded stages from Madison Square Garden to Glastonbury.

“People often ask me why I haven’t been on Broadway, which is intended as a compliment but often leaves a sour taste,” says Barkan. “After years of chasing external validation, I realized the answer is: ‘I AM Broadway.’ This song is a reminder that I don’t need to book a specific job to validate my existence. It is about dismantling the ‘castles of idolatry’ we build around industry success and empowering ourselves to BE the thing we are searching for and make the art we want to be part of.”

Barkan brings a seasoned, unapologetic perspective to her work, tackling industry ageism head-on with lines like, “I ain’t no spring chicken, but I’m still finger-lickin’ good.” The track acts as a “spell for unwavering confidence,” for anyone ready to stop waiting to be chosen and start defining their own success. Red Carpet is not only a personal manifesto but a tribute to her chosen family of drag performers, burlesque dancers, queer artists, and fellow creators who use their hutzpah to entertain, heal and empower.

This week on the podcast Paul Leary, guitarist for the Butthole Surfers stops by the show to discuss the release of After the Astronaut (Out Today), revisiting the archives, the documentary and more.

In 1998, when BUTTHOLE SURFERS followed up their 1996 mainstream breakthrough Electric Larryland with their next record entitled AFTER THE ASTRONAUT, the major label they were signed to at the time pulled it from their release schedule at the last minute. Their reasoning? They wanted a more “commercial” record. Had that label known Butthole Surfers’ oeuvre better, they probably shouldn’t have expected another “Pepper” (their #1 Billboard Modern Rock from 1996). Instead, After the Astronaut was shelved… until now when Sunset Blvd. releases that mythic and much-discussed follow-up on June 26, 2026.

“We were pretty stoked to make another album after the success of our previous album and its single ‘Pepper’,” recalls guitarist Paul Leary. “Capitol Records was stoked to get that next record until our relationship soured.” After some legal wrangling, Butthole Surfers were released from the major label’s roster and their contract was sold. “Hollywood Records bought the album but wanted to make changes to it which was an uncomfortable experience for us,” he notes (the reconfigured and reworked album was eventually released as Weird Revolution in 2001). “Now we have the right to release the original recording the way we intended it to be with its original title, After The Astronaut.”
Reacting to the grunge/altrock sludge that was populating the airwaves, Leary, drummer King Coffey and vocalist Gibby Haynes pulled away from the style that was surfacing and, instead, submerged their creativity deeper into electronics, industrial beats, acid grooves, and other synthesized sci-fi sounds. “After the Astronaut was a fun project," says Coffey. "We were using all the digital toys at our disposal at the time, and it felt much like the creation of Locust Abortion (1987). We were playing with new toys, creating things that amused us with the crayons we had, and we weren’t worried about radio airplay. It felt like we were going back to our experimental roots while still navigating the major label ecosystem."
 
 Kicking off with Haynes’ spoken word intro where he announces “I stand as a messenger of strangeness this evening in order to impress upon or at least to instruct the honorable musicians as to the methods and motives of the truly bizarre reality,” “Weird Revolution launches into a trippy and psychedelic cacophony of distorted guitar and beat-heavy rhythms that sets the tone for the record. The syncopated vocals of “Intelligent Guy” veers into proto-industrial synth grunge territory, grimy and dirty with a pulsating, mechanized beat.

First single “Jet Fighter” finds the band in a surf-punk mood, exploring lo-fi dadaist psych rock filtered through a thrift store PA system, which originated, as Leary remembers, “when I purchased a 12-string electric guitar and wanted to play it.” It’s the unnatural progression of the anti-mainstream pop song that fit perfectly in the oddball late ‘90s aesthetic. An anti-war protest song that, while originally written decades ago, echoes a sentiment that can be applied today, Gibby sings about Mikey who enlisted in the military and “He got into the cockpit and rose up in the sky / Set his sights on Beirut and he let his missiles fly / Boom, Boom!”

The textural and moodily cinematic “I Don’t Have A Problem” is an exercise in layering, with distorted voices weaving in and out of textured fuzz, guitar feedback, and other subterranean and unnerving sounds, which unsurprisingly is Leary’s favorite song on the album. “King showed up to the studio one day with a device that could listen in on other people’s cell phone conversations,” Leary laughs. “We set it up to record and turned it on.  Right out of the gate this guy is talking about girls with ‘knives and daggers.’ We turned it into the song ‘I Don’t Have a Problem’.”

Emerging from the 1980s hardcore scene, Butthole Surfers was formed by Haynes and Leary while in college in San Antonio, Texas. Bonding over a shared  distaste for mainstream music, Butthole Surfers traipsed through the music industry, always in the fringes. Championed by Dead Kennedys, Nirvana, and Orbital and compatriots of Scratch Acid, Flipper and Big Black, they remained a fixture in the music scene’s counterculture. In a moment of mainstream acceptance (they scored a #1 Modern Rock Hit with “Pepper”), the band always embraced the obtuse and the obstinate. Though the band has never quite broken up, their legacy still inspires other acts, including Gwar, Flaming Lips, Jane’s Addiction, White Zombie, Monster Magnet, Primus and dozens more.
 
 Butthole Surfers on After The Astronaut is Gibby Haynes (vocals, synths), Paul Leary (lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboards), and King Coffey (drum machines). After the Astronaut was produced by Paul Leary, engineered by Stuart Sullivan (Meat Puppets, Sublime) at Arlyn Recording Studio, mixed by Paul Leary at Preacher Mon Studio, and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Herbie Hancock, Beastie Boys, Nirvana). It will be released on June 26, 2026 via Sunset Blvd. with original art by Paul Leary and Gibby Haynes.

This week Bette A stops by the show to discuss her book Slow Stories which she collaborated with legendary musician, Brian Eno. We also talk about art and creating as well as AI. One of the other major topics we cover is her charity work to help empower woman and help the world.

As artist/writer BETTE A. explains: “As I developed these stories during two decades, rewriting them from memory, they grew shorter. Strange details persisted and gained significance, while what once seemed like a central plot line or meaning disappeared. I ended up with stories that feel deeper than my ideas - simpler, more layered, and more surprising.”

The book inspired an expansion of the stories with a multimedia collaboration with BRIAN ENO, centered on the concept of slowness.

Brian Eno’s ambient compositions cradle Bette A.’s voice as she tells two stories of the stories included in her upcoming story collection, “The Endless House” and “The Other Village.” The calm pace of the story is a deliberate choice: “When a story is told slowly, every sentence becomes more vital,” explains Bette.

“Usually when we hear stories read, we expect the pace of the reading to be fairly even,” adds Brian, whose only instruction to Bette as she recorded her short stories was: “Slow, slower, even slower, yes, more slow’.”

For both artists, slowness functions not only as a stylistic decision but as an act of resistance. Giving thirty minutes of your attention to something that is not urgent, not loud, and not passive, is rare. Putting on a record is a physical gesture to enter that mode, engage with art and, maybe, your inner world.

“My stories take place in strange and imaginary towns and villages from pasts that never happened and futures that will never occur," explains Bette. "These worlds exist without an elaborate background description, like islands in a misty sea."

“What we discovered when we were making these stories is that leaving longer spaces gives your mind a chance to imagine the detail that is hinted at in the story,” explains Brian. “The music creates a suggestive atmosphere which supports you in doing that. You don't want a lot of action in the music: what you want is to create an evocative space that leaves you, the listener, in a creative frame of mind.”

Bette notes, "When everything is fast, fragmented and designed to grasp your attention, attuning to one very slow story can be a radical act. This record is a guided daydream, a space for rest and imagination."

The hand-painted artworks accompanying Slow Stories art bundle extend this collaboration into a shared visual world. The paintings by Bette and Brian depict immersive, dreamlike terrains - birch forests with graffiti, lunar mountain ranges, floating eggs, geometric color fields. Like the stories, the paintings leave room for the viewer to enter and make the work their own.

The artist’s proceeds of the sale of the bundle will go to their charities; The Heroines! Movement, a global storytelling movement around women role models, co-founded by Bette, and Earth Percent, a charity that channels funds from the music industry to organizations that do the most impactful work around the climate emergency, co-founded by Brian.

Bette A. is an artist, born in Amsterdam. As a child, she liked to write plays and her primary school teachers allowed her to practise them in the gymnasium. She joined a youth theatre group in her hometown. Bette continued to study Image and Language at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy of Amsterdam, where she learned to follow wild ideas. After doing a Master in Creative Writing at Oxford University, she started writing in both English and Dutch, and published her novels Rus Like Everyone Else and What’s Mine. Aside from writing novels, Bette makes short stories and drawings, and teaches in art schools. In 2019 Bette co-founded TRQSE- a network of artists and scientists who work together on social projects.

Back in 2020 an idea came to her about going to Marilyn Monroe's grave and even though we were supposed to be masking she found fresh lipstick kisses. This lead her on an incredible journey of how the idol had come to be something more personal than a Movie Icon.

Amy Stanford Gaskin is a photographer and journalist based in Los Angeles.  Extraordinary access is a hallmark of her images, which she earns by spending time with the people she photographs. She strives to capture intimacy and truth in her art.

Her new book Marilyn Forever!  Marilyn Monroe—A Symbol of Hope documents and illustrates the personal reasons people are inspired by Marilyn Monroe for reasons far beyond her stardom.  During the early days of the pandemic, she happened upon Marilyn’s crypt, where she was surprised to find wet lipstick marks decorating her resting place while the majority of the world was standing six feet apart. She began to interview and photograph visitors at her grave. Many shared stories of how memories of Marilyn’s remarkable attributes and actions helped them through the toughest of times. Perhaps the most surprising discovery was that many identify with the trauma of her abuse, adoption and foster care, while others consider her a civil rights icon for the Black and LGBTQ+ communities. Marilyn’s memory lives on in surprising ways through countless people around the world who are connected and inspired by her enduring legacy.

On this episode, I sit down with Jules Peters, the wife of the front man of The Alarm, the late Mike Peters. We discuss their incredible love affair, his long battle with cancer, The Alarm’s new album, Transformation, and more.

"Mike lived a life of beauty and never gave up right to the very end,” says Jules Peters, bandmate and wife of the late Mike Peters of THE ALARM who passed away on April 29, 2025. Following a fearlessly valiant 31-year battle with cancer, his monumental legacy continues with the release of TRANSFORMATION on May 29, 2026 on Twenty First Century Recordings/Virgin Music Group. Its latest single, “Live Today” premieres now via Consequence.

Filmed just days before Mike underwent the innovative CAR-T treatment with hopes of eradicating Richter’s Syndrome, an aggressive form of lymphoma, “Live Today” is Mike’s final video. “As the sun rose, watching Mike perform this song with so much optimism and hope will live with me forever,” said Jules as she looks back. “It was a bittersweet day for me as we filmed this incredible joyous film on the beach in the North of England. After filming concluded, we climbed onto the tour bus and drove straight to the Christie Hospital in Manchester, U.K.. We were full of determination that the pioneering CAR-T would save Mike’s life but, at the same time, I was personally terrified as I couldn’t shake off a feeling that cancer had finally caught up with us both.”

Diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995 and later with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Peters refused to let his illness silence him. Instead, he turned his fight into a mission to help others.

Alongside his wife Jules, he co-founded Love Hope Strength, a music-driven cancer charity that revolutionized awareness and action around stem cell donation that continues beyond his passing. Through its innovative “Get On The List” campaigns—often hosted at rock concerts and even atop mountains—the charity has added over 400,000 people to the global stem cell registry and helped secure thousands of potential life-saving matches for patients worldwide.

While this may seem like the final chapter for The Alarm, Transformation promises that the legacy of The Alarm will transform into something larger. While Mike has gone out in a blaze of glory, his love, hope and strength continues on. Echoing the title of the new single,
 
Jules concludes, “Mike and the spirit of The Alarm will ‘Live Today,’ forever more. I invite you all to blast Transformation out loud. Imagine Mike in the room with you. Transformation is his battle cry, his resilient love of life. Right to the very end, Mike believed that he was going to live, to be totally free. My last memory is driving him open top along the North Wales coast road, playing Transformation at maximum volume. He was so happy. So full of life. Playing his air drums, bass guitar, already imagining himself on his next world tour. So keep that positive spirit moving forwards. Imagine him as you all knew him best, striding out on to that stage, changing lives one concert at a time. This is an album of hope and a passionate celebration of a life well lived. Please do not be sad. Mike wouldn’t want that. He was so proud of this album and had the best time recording it during the last six months of his life. Blast it out loud like Mike did. Margaret Gurevich (she/her) is a middle-school teacher and the author of Ain't It Funny, multiple Who Was? books, and the award-winning Chloe by Design series. When not writing or teaching, Margaret enjoys hiking, bingeing too many shows, and spending time with her family. She lives in New Jersey with her husband, son, and their wise cat, Goosie.

YASHA'S AMAZIN' BAR MITZVAH offers a poignant and authentic portrayal of the Russian American experience in the 1980s while speaking to the universal challenges of growing up and finding one's place in the world. “Like Yasha’s parents, my parents fought hard to achieve the ‘American Dream’,” says Margaret. “However, in spite of attending night school for months to learn English, holding degrees from the Soviet Union equivalent to MA+ in the US, and achieving a level of employment in the United States that allowed them to save up to buy a house in the suburbs, to many, my parents’ Russian accents were still their main identifying feature. As for me, while I did not have a Russian accent, it took a long time for people to stop seeing my differences—food, clothes, experiences—as anything besides being ‘other’. In time, like Yasha, I learned to embrace the reality of being a hyphenated American—someone who is Russian and Jewish and just as American as others."

 When author Margaret Gurevich set up to write YASHA’S AMAZIN’ BAR MITZVAH  she was basing the story on her own experiences growing up during the end of the Cold War. Gureveich’s latest novel is a touching and humorous story following the journey of a young Russian American boy as he navigates the challenges of adolescence, cultural identity, and the pursuit of his dreams.  

Set in 1986, thirteen-year-old Yasha Reznik is struggling to adjust to his new life in the suburban town of Rockwood, New Jersey. Having moved from the close-knit Russian community of Brighton Beach, Yasha finds himself feeling out of place and yearning for the familiarity of his old neighborhood. His parents may see their move as the fulfillment of the "American Dream," but for Yasha, it feels like anything but. As Yasha prepares for his Bar Mitzvah, he faces the typical trials of adolescence, compounded by the cultural differences that set him apart from his peers. Despite his efforts to fit in, including adopting the name "Jake," he is still seen as an outsider. The only person who truly understands him is Bernie, a resident at the senior citizen home where Yasha volunteers for his Bar Mitzvah project. Bernie shares Yasha's passion for the New York Mets, and together they dream of seeing the team win the World Series. Determined to make this dream a reality, Yasha embarks on a quest to secure tickets to the game, all while grappling with his own identity and the complexities of friendship.

Craig Fort stops by the show to discuss, music sobriety, inspiration and more.

Lightning Stills isn’t an album detailing the evils of alcohol. Instead, it’s life stories while still in the moment. “I started this project as a way to keep me occupied and help me through getting sober,” vocalist/guitarist Craig Fort of Omaha’s reigning outlaw country band explains.

Aside from the obvious health benefits of quitting the sauce, his reason for quitting was far more personal. “Ultimately, I got sober for my family,” he confesses. “Once I had my first son, I started trying to stay away from the bar except for playing shows. My drinking stuck with me though and eventually took over. I realized I needed to get some help or my boys weren’t gonna have a father anymore.”

Though he has sworn off alcohol, the offending substance flows freely figuratively throughout the band’s makeup. “The band name ‘Lightning Stills’ is a character I created - a reference to white lightning moonshine stills,” Craig explains, about the eponymously named alter-ego, a rhinestone cowboy in the vein of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Paycheck. “Lightning Stills” alludes to the clear high proof, unaged corn whiskey that is made in a ‘moonshine’ still. “When I first started, the ‘Lightning Stills’ character was a bootlegger. I have some history of that in my family and that lifestyle appealed to me I guess. Even off the sauce I feel like I’m still trying to find the right potency for my brew,” he laughs.

Lightning Stills is a venerated cast of Omaha musicians - a who’s who of local artists of varying genres, all unified in a love for pure and unadulterated Outlaw Country. Originating in 2020, Craig (a hardcore, metal, and garage mainstay whose leads the post-rock mainstays Leafblower) first formulated the band with Omaha music icon and multi-instrumentalist Mike Friedman who had been playing country for decades. Pulling into their magnetic orbit a “good-timing odd bunch” that features guitarist Tom May, bassist Dan Maxwell, and drummer Javid Thunders, Lightning Stills was born. “We’re a real sundry assortment,” he says. “Dan and I have been playing together in various projects for 15 years. The other fellas have played in folk, indie, garage, metal, etc. That’s one thing that’s always been nice in my experience about Omaha. You can have a bill with hip hop/metal/country, and everyone that comes out are friends and possibly play in other projects with each other as well.”

Deciding it was time to record a full record after releasing a handful of tracks in 2020 and 2021, the self-titled debut started taking shape, and a caboodle of punk-infused Outlaw Country was born. “Coming from a small town, I grew up with the outlaws and ‘90s popular country that I couldn’t escape,” he concludes. “My grandpa played in a country band. So in a sense, Lightning Stills is still just me playing music with my buds. We just aren’t playing as loud.”

For thirty-plus years, Bren Holmes has been playing his craft as a musician, songwriter, and bandmate. As an original member of the Irish Rock band The Young Dubliners, this Los Angeles-by-way-of-Dublin Ireland band has gigged all over the world--and lived to tell about it.

In the fall of 2019, Bren decided to part ways with the band in the pursuit of a solo career. After several months, he put together a list of songs he had written and got together with co-producer Bryan Dobbs to record his very first solo album, Everything You Never Wanted.

His debut album was very well received throughout the industry and not too long after it’s release, Bren didn’t waste any time and got right back to work to start on his sophomore album entitled, A Rush To The Start Line… With 10 new songs under his belt, he enlisted his co-producer Bryan Dobbs to complement his previous endeavor. It comprises of a mixture of themes and emotions with not any two songs sounding alike yet somehow strung together gracefully…it deals with a number of themes from a runaway child ("Gloria") to the topsy-turvy life of Sinéad O’ Connor ("Ordinary World") to Mother Earth speaking to humanity as a whole ("Need Some Time") to a couple of breakup songs, which Bren never seems to shy away from ("Satisfied", "Don’t Say You Will").

Bren and Bryan played most of the instruments but brought in some great talent when required, including bassist Paul Bushnell (Tim McGraw), Ben Thomas (Dweezil Zappa) to name a few…

Bren is hoping to take his new album around the country throughout 2026 and beyond. He hopes that it will bring you some enjoyment and solace while listening to it…

The story of Blessn began in March 2023, when Gerald Jones became sick of doom scrolling on social media, and found himself bummed out after every TikTok session. After a year of steady build-up, bold reinvention, and dancefloor resurrection, WARFIELD - the darkwave/deathrock project helmed by She Wants Revenge lyricist and frontman Justin Warfield - arrives at a pivotal moment. Today marks the release of Deathrock Devotionals Vol. II (out via Black Heathers/Cleopatra Records), the latest installment in Justin’s ongoing love letter to the early Los Angeles deathrock and post-punk scenes that shaped him. Just two weeks later, on November 28, the saga culminates with the release of the full-length album Deathrock Devotionals - an all-encompassing statement piece that merges narrative depth, goth energy, and propulsive hooks into one darkly luminous body of work.

“Like its predecessor, Vol. II is a continuation, and remembrance of, the early years of goth and deathrock in Los Angeles,” Justin explains. “I’m taking inspiration from 45 Grave, Super Heroines, Rozz Williams, Patrick Mata - all those people who pioneered this thing that not only lives on, but is thriving so many years later it. I’m just continuing that spirit and making something new, fun, full of energy, and from my point of view.” He continues, “In many ways this project, this band, and this record specifically is really the child of a time in the early ’80s in LA when there was a confluence of art-rock punks, East LA punks, Queer culture, late-night diners and after hours, basement shows, dueling live music venues in Chinatown as the epicenter of the scene, and suburban backyard parties. When Hollywood was dangerous and full of possibility, and before the jocks and bros crashed the punk party.”

‘Retribution’ is a song looking at the parallels of extreme sides of emotions and how we react to difficult things,” says Annie Kuchenmeister, guitarist and singer for Loki’s Folly, the Minneapolis-based indie-punk trio made up of sisters Annie (24), Nissa (19) and their brother Oskar (15). “The verses are an exploration of defensive and protective anger - wanting to hurt those who hurt you. While there’s gratification and justification to seeking retribution, the chorus creates a vulnerable opposition to these harsher feelings. It’s really about just not wanting to be alone forever and wanting to be cared for after being hurt.”
 
At its core, “Retribution” channels raw emotional honesty through the band’s trademark blend of kinetic guitar work, cathartic drumming, and melodic grit - a sonic space where fury meets tenderness head-on. “This song came out of a lot of feelings of frustration and anger,” Annie continues. “Dealing with those big emotions can be hard, and I really didn’t want to be consumed by them. So, this song became a way to lay everything bare - the good and the bad - and explore it all honestly. The music and lyrics really came together as a unit; as the melody came about, an old lyric idea immediately clicked.”

Following on the heels of their September 2025 single (“King of All Alone”),” “Retribution” continues Loki’s Folly’s evolution toward deeper, more introspective songwriting. This reflective thread connects “King of All Alone” and “Retribution,” both songs were produced by Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum and born from turbulent emotional spaces that transform struggle into strength. Where “King of All Alone” aches with longing and cautious optimism, “Retribution” pushes back with defiant honesty - together forming a striking one-two punch from a band unafraid to confront both the chaos and the catharsis of modern life.  

Formed in South Minneapolis, Loki’s Folly began as a project between sisters Annie and Nissa, later joined by their younger brother Oskar on bass. Their bond - both familial and creative - gives their music a distinct urgency, weaving together themes of identity, isolation, neurodivergence, and resilience. On their debut Sisu, the band worked with legendary producers Ryan Smith (of Soul Asylum), Ed Ackerson (The Replacements, The Jayhawks), Kevin Bowe (Etta James, Jonny Lang), and John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew W.K.), crafting a record that explored the complexities of adolescence and the emotional weight of finding one’s voice in an uncertain world. 

While Sisu introduced listeners to their youthful defiance and eclectic spirit, “Retribution” feels like a step into something more introspective - a song that acknowledges the anger beneath the surface, but also the fragile hope that lingers within it. It’s a fitting next chapter for a band growing up in public, unafraid to document the messy process of becoming.

Dark dreampop duo Magic Wands will release a new album entitled Cascades via Metropolis Records. It includes their current single, "Time To Dream,"as well as the previously issued "Hide," "Armour," "Moonshadow," and "Across The Water."

“Cascades was born from a fascination with how the past lingers inside us and explores transformation and the spaces where timelines blur into one,” the band explains. Shaped by the spirit of centuries-old poetry, gothic romance, and myth, the album pulses with post-punk and dream-pop sounds, shot through with lingering shadows of the old world, bridging the sound of their 2012 debut album Aloha Moon with more recent releases.

Formed in 2008 in Nashville by vocalists/guitarists Dexy and Chris Valentine but now based in Los Angeles, Magic Wands are known for a shimmering, dreamy sound that melds elements of shoegaze, dreampop, postpunk, and goth. Their music utilzes heavily-textured guitars, synth drones, and ethereal vocals to conjure an otherworldly atmosphere, plus song lyrics that are emotionally engaging.
 
The duo has built a loyal fanbase over the course of five studio albums to date, the most recent of which was Switch (2023). Songs from it were subsequently remixed by guest artists and released as Switched later that same year.

Magic Wands is a partnership built on alchemy of dark dreampop, goth-tinged postpunk, and a touch of cosmic romance. 
 
 
 Shaped by the duo’s signature cinematic atmosphere and celestial hooks, they hint at an album that explores transformation, reflection, and the pull of distant horizons.

Releasing on the heels of Triptides’ June 2025 album Shapeshifter, the six-song EP Night Shift arrives as the band lands in Europe for a two-week tour.  Comprised of four songs recorded during the Shapeshifter sessions and two newly recorded covers, the EP is classic Triptides.  From the dreamy fuzz ‘n’ faze of the opener “Pendulum,” to the bouncy groove of “Lonely Planet” and the interplanetary funk closer “Nuvens,” Triptides seems to be dimming the lights for an intimate late-night party, the Night Shift.  The EP comes out on Halloween, which is also the date of the first show on the European tour.  Leading up to the October 31 release, two singles will prime fans for the full EP: “Pendulum,” out on September 26, and “Spooky,” (a cover of the Halloween favorite originally recorded by Classics IV) out on October 17.  Like Shapeshifter, the EP is on Label 51 records worldwide, also home to Mojave Phone Booth, the Rain Parade and Dream Syndicate.  

Over the last fourteen years and dozens of albums and singles, Triptides have traversed a hyper color musical landscape of psychedelic rock, Laurel Canyon folk and spaced-out jazz pop. Each track can be traced back to group leader Glenn Brigman’s unique ability to craft and explore a seemingly infinite number of dimensional melodies and harmonies.  With every line of Brigman’s airy vocals that dance across the tape and into the speakers, stoners, trippers and lovers alike are transported to a sweet and familiar place, lifted by chiming guitars, hypnotic drums, glittering pianos and hallucinogenic fuzz.  On stage in Europe, Brigman will be joined by long-time collaborator (and current resident of Copenhagen) Stephen Burns on guitar and the rhythm section of Tyler English on bass and Craig Jacobs on drums.

Living Between the Lines is the debut solo LP from Frank Meyer. A long time coming, Meyer’s been hinting at it for a while now with Bandcamp exclusive tracks, covers on tribute albums, acoustic solo shows, and his acclaimed collaboration album with Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers. Like the Eddie collab, LBTL is out on Kitten Robot Records. The 11-song album adds touches of blues and soul to Meyer’s expected high-energy rock ‘n ’roll, revealing a more mature voice. He is joined for duets by longtime friend and collaborator Lisa Kekaula of the Bellrays on the title track, Runaways icon Cherie Currie on “Piece of Me” and Spaghetti himself on “Partners In Crime.”

An award-winning musician, filmmaker and author, Meyer has a track record that covers rock ‘n ’roll, punk, heavy metal, blues, and country. Known for his work with everyone from Rock ‘n ’Roll Hall of Famers James Williamson (Iggy & the Stooges) and Wayne Kramer (MC5) to legendary punk act FEAR, Meyer has carved out a career full of unlikely collaborations, hard work, searing guitar playing, and ace songwriting skills.

“It meant a lot to have these particular vocalists join me on my solo debut,” says Meyer. “Lisa and I go way back to my earliest days of the music scene in L.A.. Eddie is also an ld friend and touring buddy, and was a big inspiration in making this album. Cherie saw the Streewalkin’ Cheetahs early on and helped us get signed. So all of them are dear to me and have been integral in my career.”

As kids, Frank and his brother (actor Breckin Meyer) put on plays and lip-sync concerts for their parents. By age 12, lil ’Frankie was playing guitar, writing songs and recording at Frank Zappa’s house with his childhood friends Ahmet and Dweezil. By age 15, he was gigging professionally around the ‘80s Hollywood club scene with his teenage high school band. In the mid-’90s, Meyer formed punk act the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs, who went on to record many acclaimed albums, tour the world and carve out a niche as one of L.A.'s hardest working, hardest rocking bands. The band remains active with new releases and reissues out in stores on Rum Bar Records, Heavy Medication Records, and Ghost Highway Records, plus European and US touring activity.

My love for reading began at a young age—curled up with a book, a fluffy blanket, a warm candle flickering nearby, and a cup of London Fog tea from Harney & Sons in hand. There’s nothing quite like escaping into another world, especially a good dystopian novel (bonus points if it’s by Tahereh Mafi, my favorite author).

When I moved to Yuma, Arizona, in 2023, I was surprised to find how limited the local bookstore scene was. Aside from a small, soon-to-close shop downtown and the ever-reliable Barnes & Noble, there weren’t many spaces for readers to gather, connect, or simply exist in the cozy, book-loving atmosphere I’d always craved.

That’s what inspired me to create Sage and Story—a place that’s more than just a bookstore. I wanted to offer the community a true literary haven: a welcoming, peaceful space to read, chat over tea, join a book club, or just browse without the pressure of big-name retail.

I started small, selling used books from home with a dream of one day opening a storefront. For now, it’s all about small steps and shared stories. By this time next year, I hope to be running Sage and Story from a cozy, shared space—turning a passion into a full-time purpose.

It is a song of destruction, of fire consuming everything in its path, yet within that annihilation lies the threshold of renewal, and the promise of something new,” explains internationally beloved singer/songwriter/producer AZAM ALI about her new single “To Pieces,” which is released today, September 4, 2025 via COP International. Taken from her upcoming album Synesthesia which will be released on November 14, 2025, “To Pieces” is a gorgeously aural landscape of echoing strings, cinematic keyboard washes, and tribal percussions, with Azam’s ethereal vocals floating above it all like a luminescent spectre.

  Deeply layered both musically and lyrically, her sixth solo album Synesthesia is an escape from this tumultuous world, but not without the impact of the cultural and political upheaval. Named after the sensory phenomenon that allows individuals to experience the senses in a different way such as tasting colors or feeling sounds, “synesthesia” is a concept that runs throughout the album. The title track’s accelerating beat contrasts with Azam’s wispy vocals, generating a neural response that is comforting yet daunting. “This song is very special for me because I tried to capture what the sense of synesthesia that I experience is, the way my senses sometimes overlap, blending sound, color, and texture into a single, immersive perception.” The gauzy and delicate “Autumn of Goodbye” offers a softer and radiant ambiance with Azam holding onto the final moments before letting go (Walk with me / Under the sky / And offer me / The stars / On the way down). Synesthesia also offers two eye-opening covers: Tim Buckley’s “Song to the Siren” and Natalie Merchant’s “This House Is On Fire.” The former is a moody take on the original, highlighting Azam’s octave jumping vocal prowess, while the latter transforms Merchant’s languid calypso beat into a propulsive song with Middle Eastern flourishes.
 
“My music is an invitation to step beyond the confines of time, place, and the fragile vessel of flesh into a universe without borders,” Azam explains. “I want the listener to feel carried into the vastness of the ethereal, where freedom breathes, and every note reveals our part in a greater design. In this realm, we are no longer solitary beings, but shining stars drawn together into galaxies, each tone a reminder that we are participants in a cosmic symphony far larger than ourselves.”

Eddie stops by the show to discuss the hit song he wrote, 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot', his last CD, 'Film School', and so much more.

The first time I heard Pat Benatar’s version of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot,’ I was almost arrested for loitering,” laughs internationally lauded Canadian songwriter, producer, performer, and rights advocate Eddie Schwartz about the song he penned that became Benatar’s first Top Ten single in 1980. “I was walking down Yonge Street in Toronto when I heard it blasting out of a renowned hair salon and stopped dead in my tracks. I even think I started to drool [laughs]. As I stood there in a state of shock, a salon stylist called the police because of my strange behavior. When they arrived, they ordered me to move or face arrest. When I tried to explain to them that I just heard my song on the radio for the first time, they said, 'Sure, buddy. Move along."

Stepping out from behind the curtain and into the spotlight, Schwartz will be physically releasing his full-length studio release on CD, FILM SCHOOL, on November 12, 2025. His songs have been recorded by an astonishing roster: Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, America, Donna Summer, Rita Coolidge, Rascal Flatts, and Mountain, among many others. As a producer, his credits include the Doobie Brothers’ Cycles, Carrack’s Groove Approved, and his own albums, all resonating with an unmistakable blend of craftsmanship and soul. This six-song EP finds the storied songwriter who authored such classics as Paul Carrack’s "Don't Shed a Tear" (1987), The Doobie Brothers’ "The Doctor" (1989), the aforementioned “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” (among hundreds of others) on the other side of the studio glass.

“It’s a difficult time right now and I freely admit to struggling with how to cope with the daily insanity,” says Eddie about the current political and socio-economic climate. Instead of subjecting himself to the barrage of news, he opted instead to return to the studio and write songs. “The moment of writing ‘We Win’ was profound for me because I found a way to a more hopeful place that helped with anger, sadness and bewilderment at how we got here,” he explains. “I felt the message of ‘We Win’ offered some sanity that I needed to cling to, that I needed to find for myself. And I wanted to share it in the hope it might work for others as well.”
 
 After an extended creative drought that plagued him for years, writing the single and subsequent songs on Film School was a turning point for him. “After a number of years doing the Nashville-style co-writing every day—two songs a day, five days a week— I burned out,” Eddie reflects. “The blank page stayed blank for a long time,” he explains of the rigorous demands of being a songwriter in today’s music business. The catalyst to cure his writer’s block was his frustration with current events. “My struggle to process the world at this moment in time and muster some resolve was what propelled me back in the writing mindset. ‘We Win’ acknowledges the pain and the struggle, but professes love means you don’t have to succumb to it.”

From an early age, Amanda has been aware and in tuned with her Psychic gifts and with the spirit world. As she grew up listening to sound of her own drumbeat. She borrowed her first book on Wicca when she was 13 and first tarot deck at 16. He is a special correspondent for Billboard magazine, a book reviewer for MusicRow magazine, and editor for trade magazines Record World and Cashbox . He is a Curb Professor of Music Industry History at Belmont University in Nashville, where his former students include Brad Paisley and Chris Young. William Covert announces the release of 'Dream Vessel' via Coup Sur Coup Records.

Exploring the territories on the intersection of improvised music, jazz and ambient soundscapes, Chicago-based musician is happy to present his newest release.

After more than 15 years of drumming in math rock, post-rock, and post-hardcore bands, William Covert began experimenting with live-looped synths alongside acoustic and electronic drums. This experimentation birthed two full-length solo albums characterized by post-rock and krautrock-inspired synth loops and melodies, all performed solo with loop pedals and sequencers. “I wanted my third solo album to go in a different direction with different instrumentation,” – explains Covert discussing the process behind the creation of ‘Dream Vessel’.

Joining Covert on drums for half the album's tracks, longtime collaborators Jack McKevitt (guitar) and Nathan Schenck (bass) perform together as the William Covert Trio. Recorded live and fully improvised in the studio, the William Covert Trio tracks contain no overdubs, capturing the spontaneous and visceral energy of the musicians performing together in the same room. The trio, who also play together in Chicago’s post-hardcore noise rock outfit Tum, bring an aggressive avant-garde noise rock improvisational ethos to the record. “The trio’s approach is rooted in raw energy with loose but deliberate structure,” states Covert, equally inspired by both Don Caballero and Last Exit.

While the first part of the record became a group effort for Covert, the other half was performed entirely solo, diving deep into cinematic ambient soundscapes, dreamy Frippertronic-influenced guitars, modular synth, and free-jazz drumming filtered through a post-industrial lens. These compositions immerse themselves in meticulously layered sound design with nods to slowcore and minimalist post-rock, providing a dynamic contrast to the trio’s raw intensity. ‘Dream Vessel’ coming October 17

Oakland, CA-based CANDY WHIPS released their new covers EP MOONLIGHT via Josie Cotton's Kitten Robot Records On August 26th! The EP features classic tracks “Duke of Earl” (originally recorded by Gene Chandler), “Earth Angel” (The Penguins), and “Bad Boy” (Jive Bombers), among others, the EP Moonlight was inspired by both the post-punk and new wave bands of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s who in turn were inspired by the music of the ‘50s and early ‘60s. Another catalyst for Wendy’s creative influence was also being inspired by Silicon Teens, which is an experimental project by producer and founder of Mute Records Daniel Miller from 1980, which infamously redid Chuck Berry songs into a synthesizer construct, Wendy Stonehenge set out to put his own angular spin on classic and iconic 1950s tracks, keeping the inherent structure of each song intact to keep them recognizable while giving them a fresh, modern edge. 

"I’ve always been a big oldies fan," says WENDY STONEHENGE of CANDY WHIPS about his new EP MOONLIGHT, which features reinterpretations of radio hits of the 1950s, including “Duke of Earl” (Gene Chandler), “Earth Angel” (The Penguins), and “Bad Boy” (Marty Wilde), among others. "When I was a kid, it was always on the radio. These days, oldies radio doesn’t really exist so you have to actively seek it out." Due out August 26th, 2025, via Kitten Robot, the EP dusts off the radio hits of yore and polishes them with synths, vocal effects, and drum machines, buffing them with shiny, modern production. "My choice of tracks is more of an intentional thing. I’ve noticed that I’m particularly drawn to doo wop and old vocal groups."

Already an established member of the well-known Northern California glam rock band Glitter Wizard, Wendy Stonehenge formed Candy Whips as a side project to dabble in music that didn't fit his other band. When live shows ground to a halt during the pandemic, he re-ignited the project in his home studio and transported Kraftwerk’s roborock to Oakland, fusing the genres punk, electronic, and synthpop. Previously known for creating the critically-hailed gonzo cyberpunk of his 2021’s debut LP Automaton, 2023's hypnotic A.L.T.C.H.B.S., and 2024's angular synth-pop album Artificial Melodies, which was released last year, MOONLIGHT is a refreshing and modernized take on classic tracks that are captivating yet intriguing to the ear.

Waverly Drive is the solo project of Phil Galloni, a studio engineer/producer and multi-instrumentalist. The Chicago native who has been running Voltiv Sound (Los Angeles, est. 2015) released the debut EP “Living in a Fantasy” in Nov 2022, EP2 “Now I Know” in July 2023, and EP3 “Push My Luck” in May 2024. The music evokes some of the musician’s influences in the indie rock, new wave, indie pop, and electro pop realms, and is perfect for a drive up the coast, daydreaming, and learning to escape the absurdities of life.

The debut LP from Waverly Drive, due out September 16th, 2025, presents reflections on a dystopian world where nothing is as it ever seems.

A world in which the caregiver brings roses to the forlorn lover on a rainy day.

A world where Cinderella waits, though her prince is lost in decadence.

The Lael Project is the vision of Marla Mase, Lael’s mother, to encourage open discussions about suicide, mental illness, eating disorders, and depression. It is her belief that through the sharing of stories, music and song, healing can begin.

Marla Mase, is a native New Yorker and the mother to two beautiful souls, Lael and Yanai. She is also an entrepreneur, writer, performer, recording artist and COO of True Groove Records. She most recently returned from a whirlwind tour of the UK promoting her most recent release, Infinite They Went. She is currently touring Being Somebody, a show she co-wrote and performs with her 88-year-old father to sold-out audiences across the East Coast. Her theatrical works have been featured at venues such as La MaMa ETC, NYC SummerStage, and SXSW. Tragically, Marla lost her daughter Lael to suicide in 2017. Since that time Marla has been sharing her family story with the hope that it might in some way benefit others and help to remind us that we are all connected in our human experience.

The Lael Project is named in memory of Lael Summer Feldman, who tragically took her own life on July 26, 2017, after a courageous struggle with depression, an eating disorder, and suicidality.

Lael struggled throughout her adolescence, spending most of her teenage years in and out of various treatment centers. She credits her fifth treatment center in Utah, where she spent 17 months, (between the ages of 15 and 17), as lifesaving. Lael completed high school in her hometown of NYC and went on to receive her Bachelor of Music degree from the elite Popular Music Performance Program at USC’s Thornton School of Music. She released two albums, Burden to Bear (2013) and Life in Color (2015) on True Groove Records. She was written up as “the one to watch” from various music sites such as: Kings of A&R, EarMilk, AbsolutePunk, The Big Takeover, SoulTracks, RockNYC and PopDose, to name a few. Her songs are an amalgamation of soulful anthems, many of which challenged the inner negative voices of her eating disorder and depression.

Known for her sassy sense of humor and badass irreverence, Lael’s lyrics, whether a ballad or a dance floor banger, were always an offering of strength, hope and empowerment.

Laura Sawosko's songs not only reflect her personal journey, but draw you into your own, through ruthless honesty and vivid imagery.  Her vocal technique is raw and unrehearsed which parallels her guitar, while the piano introduces another unexpected layer of melodic and technical grace.

Laura was the keyboardist in her former band Surrender Dorothy that opened for the 1999 Phoenix Lilith Fair with Sarah McLachlin, Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride and Dido. She began her ambitious solo career as a singer/songwriter in 2000 after she graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Broadcasting and Music Composition from Arizona State University. 

Laura composed the original score for the gay friendly independent film, An Intimate Friendship, by Filling The Gap Productions. The film was acclaimed by audiences globally after headlining both national and international film festivals.  

Laura is no stranger to the film industry.  You may have seen Laura on NBC's #1 rated show, Fear Factor. In a brave effort to win the grand prize to assist in her music career, she had the unique opportunity of riding a bull in Season 2.  A few years later, she submitted a video that was a winner on ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos.  

As a member of Chicks With Picks during her time in Arizona, she had the opportunity to open for Country artist Sarah Buxton and Michelle Branch. She later had the privilege of opening for another one of her mentors, Edwin McCain, on the Cayamo music cruise.  

Laura moved to Nashville in 2010 to pursue her songwriting career. She quickly became affiliated with NSAI and ASCAP.  She has performed at the famous Bluebird Cafe, The Listening Room, The Local, Douglas Corner, Bobby’s Idle Hour and numerous other renowned local venues.  Publishers and mentors have recognized Laura for her descriptive storytelling with a poetic undertone.  

She recorded her album The Songwriters in Nashville with Producer Vaughn Lofstead.   The album consists of 14 songs and her title track, The Songwriters, was chosen by Publisher Woody Bomar to open his reknowed songwriting seminars in Nashville.

Laura is a true artist and storyteller.  She is passionate about her craft and expresses that unwavering dedication in her song The Songwriters when she writes “not all of us will be heard, but there’s nothing we’d rather be.  We are the Songwriters of Nashville Tennessee”.

David Boop is a Denver-based speculative fiction author & editor. He’s also an award-winning essayist, and screenwriter. Before turning to fiction, David worked as a DJ, film critic, journalist, and actor.

 David’s novels run the gamut, such as the sci-fi/noir She Murdered Me with Science and the Weird Western, The Drowned Horse Chronicle.

 David edited the bestselling and award-nominated Weird Western anthology series beginning with Straight Outta Tombstone, followed by a trio of Space Western anthologies starting with Gunfight on Europa Station. He’s edited several pulp anthologies, including Gentlemen Prefer Domino Lady, Domino Patrick: Daughter of the Domino Lady, and Green Hornet & Kato: Detroit Noir. Most recently, he edited the Jack L. Chalker’s Well World tribute mosaic novel, Permutations.

 David is prolific in short fiction, writing across many genres including sci-fi, fantasy, horror, weird western, and superhero. Some of his shorts include media tie-ins for Predator (nominated for the 2018 Scribe Award), Kolchak the Night Stalker, The Green Hornet, and Veronica Mars.

She’s played the festivals –multiple South by Southwests, Kerrville, Calgary and more. And the radio shows –E-Town, Mountain Stage, WoodSongs, BBC 2 with Bob Harris.Her singing has been heard on Riverdale and Girl Boss, and her songs formed the musical backbone to Christine Hoang’s 2017 play A Girl Named Sue, singled out by Austin360.com in their review as “gorgeous, moving ballads comment(ing) on the themes of the scenes they punctuate.”The future looks auspicious for BettySoo.

Kula Shaker is Crispian Mills (guitar/vocals), Jay Darlington (Hammond organ), Alonza Bevan (bass) and Paul Winter-Hart (drums), the original line-up who regrouped for the first time since 1999’s Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts.

“We're not embarrassed to admit we still regard America as the Holy Land of Rock and Roll,” says guitarist/vocalist Crispian Mills of psychedelic post-Britpop band KULA SHAKER about their respect for North America. “It's a hopelessly romantic and rather old-fashioned view of the colonies, y'know, but, dash it all, we limeys just can't give it up!”

To prove their adoration for the continent, the mesmeric band (consisting of all four original members) has added a handful of headline shows in addition to their dates supporting The Dandy Warhols on a North American tour, kicking off in Chicago, IL on Sept. 16th at Metro and working their way east to NYC’s Irving Plaza on September 22ndbefore shooting off to Texas to support The Dandy Warhols for a round of dates on the Western side of the country. “We can't wait,” Mills says excitedly. “We’ve always dug the Dandy Warhols’ tunes and their stonesy vibe, not to mention their work with the Velvets and their defining contribution to Pop Art. It's going to be a blast travelling around with them!”

Combining their shimmery brand of shoegazey textures with an intoxicatingly expansive light show, Kula Shaker’s live performances border on an immersive, trippy environment that meshes the visual and aural worlds into one kaleidoscopic event. “We're also pairing up with our friend Lance Gordon, AKA the Mad Alchemist, based in San Francisco,” explains Mills excitedly. “He does the world's best mind-melting liquid lightshow, so it's going to be a real psychedelic bunfight with all manner of mischief!”

Hot off the road in the U.K. with Ocean Colour Scene, Kula Shaker has been teasing new music. Having released a new single “Charge of the Light Brigade” this past Spring that Jammerzine calls, “a retro-tastic stance in the stanza with bravado and flair from a set of truly original musicians” and Northern Exposure declares “more powerful than ever … a sonic power that’s thrillingly new and yet, at the same time, contains an aura that is so nice and ageless,” the psycherock maestros are jazzed for a whole new chapter in their musical biography.

“We tend to offer an assortment of live goodies,” he hints at the setlist. Songs like ‘Govinda,’ ‘Tattva,’ and ‘Hush’ are always a joy because they never get tired. They just run and run, like good German motor cars. Must be some kind of enchantment. Whether old or new, the songs have to stand up and be counted. We have a brand new one called 'My Lucky Number' that tallies well in this context.”

This week Danny Maxwell, Craig Fort and the band's mascot Tim stop by the show to discuss, their latest release 'Burn Cruise' , ghosts, the psychology behind the music and more.

Since 2016, Leafblower’s patented brand of psych-tinged post-rock has whiplashed crowds of bobbing heads and pumping fists. The band released a demo, a live set, a single—but all the while, their first full-length has been simmering to a boil, now ready to sear. 

Burn Cruise is a sound that only a steady diet of metal and hardcore, even while members played in post-punk (New Lungs, The Fucking Party), indie (Little Brazil), and old-school reinvented country (Lightning Stills), can meld. The opener, “Long Night,” haunts, creeps, then gallops into the howling dual guitars of Dan Maxwell and Clark Jahn, while the outro track “Stoopin’” is a haunted shiver of banjo, piano, and theremin soaked in the aural equivalent to sepia. In between, “Namaste” unleashes an onslaught out of the gate, as bassist Craig Fort gutturally punctuates vocalist Maxwell’s plaintive venom. On the title track, sludge shifts to discordant-edged stadium anthem, while the melodic post-punk of “Unsatisfied” twists into prog-rock harmony before the song pummels with pure metal. The unrelenting beat of “Ghosts” builds, guitars wailing, and Tab Tworek’s drums turn frenetic, a pulse-racing metronome. Add to all that: Tim. 

Imagine a dimly lit dive bar, Leafblower gearing up to play. Before the strike of the first chord, before the pulse of a drum, an old man—stringy hair and beard—hovers in the billowing fog of a smoke machine. On close inspection, his eyes are empty. His pale face flaps loosely, as if skinned and put back. His body is stuffed. Is he a mascot, like Dio’s Murray or Iron Maiden’s Eddie? Is he symbolic? Is he a manifestation of the collective consciousness? An embodiment of the music? He is Tim.

Tracy Bonham is a classically trained violinist and pianist turned alternative singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 1996 with her twice GRAMMYTM nominated album, The Burdens of Being Upright (Island Records). This debut album cast Bonham into the global spotlight with MTV fame and major radio airplay with her #1 alternative chart-topping song Mother Mother, an anthem for disgruntled teenagers of all ages. While so many of her songs have been placed in film and tv throughout the decades, you might have most recently heard Mother Mother in Yellow Jackets season 1 episode 2.

Over the past 27 years, Bonham’s albums and live performances have shown what it is to be an ever- evolving artist. While Bonham sings, she moves from guitar to violin, from violin to piano, and back again. When playing live, her songs from the 90s blend and blur with stylistic changes that she has created over time making her entire repertoire make sense as an entire body of work. She plays the old and new material and even though the songs span thirty years they all continue to be equally relevant.

Bonham will be joined by upright bassist Rene Hart (David Amram, James Hunter) and drummer Alvester Garnett (Regina Carter, Abbey Lincoln) and with her new material she connects to something deeper than ever, her true self. Most of the new songs are performed on the piano giving her the chance to lean back to what made her fall in love with music in the first place. Borrowing harmonic structures and beautiful melodies from her favorite classical romantic composers, Bonham stretches herself artistically to combine this rediscovered passion with her unique and quirky songwriting style to create musical alchemy. This purifying process most certainly acts as a vehicle for inner transformation for Bonham. "It's like going back to the spark I had as a very young musician, discovering the beauty of Ravel and DeBussy and reclaiming that spark and everything that has happened after that". Bonham speaks of her current line-up, "Playing with incredible jazz musicians like Rene and Alvester has opened my mind and is now giving me the support I have always needed to spread my wings and fly. I am really enjoying exploring the intersections and overlaps of where classical and jazz meet without excluding my alternative rock sensibilities. These dudes can rock too. The three of us playing together is definitely my happy place".

Luke stops by the show to discuss his musical journey, which started at the age of 7,  how the pandemic changed his life, a separate identity from being a singer/musician, and more.

Luke Marzec’s life has always been about music. He picked up the violin aged 7, the sax at 10 and the piano soon after. At just 11, his natural talent earned him a place at the prestigious Royal College of Music (RCM) Junior Department. In fact, most of Luke’s childhood was spent either in the practice room or on stage. By the time he graduated high school, he had led countless classical and jazz bands, ensembles and orchestras - professionally, at school, RCM, and at the national level. 

He formed his first band at York University and spent most of his early 20s playing sax in various jazz, psychedelic, indie, and brass bands in the north. He gained a scholarship to Trinity Conservatoire’s Master’s course in 2016, but after a full term of shredding, decided to focus on his career as a solo artist. In 2018, he released his EP Chances, which received critical acclaim. 

Over the next couple of years, Luke released two more EPs and gained writing and production experience, doing the rounds co-writing with artists in the UK such as Maverick Sabre, VC Pines, Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Jazzanova. He featured on Johannes Brecht’s “Voicing Something” which was remixed by Adriatique. His Spotify page now has more than 15 million listens.  

Today, Luke is one-third of London’s experimental modular synth-jazz group Lazy H and the Loose Cables, in which he plays the tenor sax and synthesizer. The trio have gigged with London’s Kinkajous, Mark Cake, Alabaster DePlume, Plumm and FlamingGods, and they released their first album Rotary Perception with Nottingham-based label Running Circles earlier this year. The avant-garde jazz album takes listeners through psychedelic and tender soundscapes, perfect for sci-fi film scores. He also hosts Headroom – one of the city’s most exciting jam sessions which showcases some of the capital’s best jazz and electronic instrumentalists and producers. 

Covid instigated a new period for the artist when he moved into a 44-foot narrowboat. Living life as a water traveler, Luke spent a lot of time in the countryside in relative solitude, before moving to Devon and setting up a new studio. After months in lockdown, this frenetic new period led to a prolific stream of writing and recording. 

Despite Marzec’s writing and collaborating prowess, he is most at ease on stage where everything is simplest, where decision making is easiest and where he feels most alive. After the first note is played, the rest is as if he was watching himself perform; as if his spirit floats to another realm to observe his body. During his performances, the rugged growl of his voice in brilliant contrast to the soft notes he plays on the keys allows him to connect with his audience in moments of sheer bliss and unity. 

In 2025 Luke will take up residence at one of the city’s newest micro-venues while touring across Europe to promote his new album, debut album Something Good Out Of Nothing.

Leonard Goldberg is an internationally bestselling author of the Joanna Blalock series of medical thrillers. His novels, acclaimed by critics as well as fellow authors, have been translated into a dozen languages and sold more than a million copies worldwide. Leonard Goldberg is himself a consulting physician affiliated with the UCLA Medical Center, where he holds an appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine. A highly sought-after expert witness in medical malpractice trials, he is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and rheumatology, and has published over a hundred scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals.

Leonard Goldberg's writing career began with a clinical interest in blood disorders. While involved in a research project at UCLA, he encountered a most unusual blood type. The patient's red blood cells were O-Rh null, indicating they were totally deficient in A, B, and Rh factors and could be administered to virtually anyone without fear of a transfusion reaction. In essence, the patient was the proverbial "universal" blood donor. Eef Barzelay of CLEM SNIDE, some what cheekily. For Eef, the intersection of hope and resignation is the genesis of his tenth album OH SMOKEY

and a focal point of his upcoming tour. “I know fans like the older songs and the covers I've done, so it's really an ever-evolving mishmash... based on my blood sugar level and or deeply-rooted childhood traumas.”

 Clem Snide has been aiming to include unique locations in an effort to bring music back to his fans for a much more intimate and tangible experience. “I like to sing in unexpected places whenever I can,” he explains, “Mennonite churches, abandoned hospitals, houseboats taking on water...I've done 'em all!” These spec shows aren’t usually private affairs. In fact, they’re open to fans everywhere, travel, of course, permitting. “Mostly though I play living rooms,” he clarifies. “Just sign the mailing list and I'll come to your house!”

His new album Oh Smokey, has been called “a gorgeous listen with lots of food for thought” by Americana UK, this album finds Eef combining forces with producer and devout Clem Snide fan Josh Kaufman(Bonny Light Horseman, Craig Finn, Hiss Golden Messenger) for a pastoral exploration of the human condition and finding hope when you’re knee deep in existential mud. (Of note, the previous album, 2020’s Forever Just Beyond was produced by fellow devout Clem Snide fan, Scot Avett of Avett Brothers).

“It's a collection of songs I've had for some years now,” he describes. “The inspiration was more just getting to work with Josh Kaufman and keeping the dream alive.” Written during a pivotal and highly - emotionally charged point in his life, the origins of Oh Smokey saw Eef going through a painful divorce, his life thrown into upheaval with his move out of Nashville, and parting ways with his longtime manager. “There's, for sure, a soon-to-be-divorced energy in some of the themes,” he continues. “But mostly, I like to think of the songs as clumsy, well-meaning attempts at prayer by a lapsed Atheist raised by godless Jews.”

Contemplative and meditative, Eef and band’s need for melodic lushness is never lost. From the stunning and jaunty acoustic opener, “Free” (“’Free’ plays around with the idea of a post- death reunification with our eternal selves”) to the sensitive strums of “Air Show Disaster ” to the electric guitar roll of the regret-fueled “Smokey” that feels almost like an outtake from Neil Young’s Harvest Moon, Oh Smokey is a deeply personal album that explores his current worldview.

Vox of the Chameleons stops by to discuss his long career, his evolution, their new record, the world, and more.

Having released their first studio recordings in over 20 years in 2024 (Where Are You? of new material and Tomorrow Remember Yesterday which consisted of re-recorded archival tracks), Chameleons have been gearing up the release of their upcoming album Arctic Moon later 2025 which will be their first studio full-length since 2001’s Why Call It Anything. He explains, "It's quite different from anything Chameleons has done before, and I know this will probably polarize the legacy audience, but we're quite excited about how it's developing. I think the songwriting is much more mature in a lot of ways, which is to be expected, I suppose, given our age, but I, for one, really believe we're taking the band forward, and I'm quite excited about it."
 
 Not planning on playing too much from the new album (“we don’t really want the songs spoiling on such platforms as YouTube until the record is actually out”), the new album will undoubtedly be embraced by old and new fans alike. “Our approach to making the music hasn’t changed,” Vox hints, “although having found a regular producer in Christophe Bride at Oxygene has helped our development tremendously. His studio in Manchester, UK, is a great environment to work in. We feel our sound is fresher and more contemporary, which seems to resonate very strongly with our younger audience that are turning out to see us in such great numbers.”
 
 Long cited as a hugely influential act, having inspired the likes of Verve, Oasis, White Lies, The Slow Readers Club, Interpol, The Killers and Editors, among countless others and known for their transformative musical catalog and intense and emotionally charged live performances, Chameleons have created a legacy that extends beyond their four studio albums. Following their debut single "In Shreds" in 1982, the band released three seminal albums: the widely acclaimed Script of the Bridge (1983), cited by many sources as a masterpiece way ahead of its time, and its follow-up, What Does Anything Mean? Basically!' (1984), Strange Times (1986), and Why Call It Anything? (2001).

Their unique sound quickly captivated the public through their mix of melancholic yet energetic and powerful tunes, hypnotic, ethereal riffs, and the potent, timeless lyrical style. Chameleons are considered one of the most influential guitar bands of the 80s and 90s, contributing substantially to the post-punk, shoegaze, and indie scenes. Following last fall’s revved-up and greased banger, “The Summer of Hate'' which Q Magazine called “buzz-heavy, raw punk” and Post-Punk.com “a dark-rock manifesto, fueled by gritty guitars and fuzzed-out vocals with a supple, sexy rhythm,” the new single opens the gates for the release of their twelfth album ROCKMAKER.  Always experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their own creativity (their previous album Tafelmuzik Means More When You're Alone was a three-and-a-half-hour exploration of what The AU Report characterized as a “soundtrack that would typically score a mid-16th century banquet”), this album delves deeper into minor guitar chords that often characterize post-punk, deep metal, or even goth.

Sometimes we have a very focused idea of what we want,” Taylor-Taylor says. “It’s generally what we want somebody else to make but since they never do, we have to. It has a very specific sound. There aren’t a lot of heavy guitar records currently coming out that we like, so that was the impetus for ROCKMAKER.”

Belouis Some (real name Neville Keighley), singer-songwriter from London, released his first album Some People in 1985 on Capitol EMI Records. After initial recording in London, the album was produced in New York by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero. Carlos Alomar arranged and played on the tracks and brought together a lineup that included Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson (Chic), Carmine Rojas, Robin Clark, Chester Kamen, and Guy Fletcher (Dire Straits). The album contained the worldwide hit singles Imagination and Some People with the video for Imagination, directed by Storm Thorgerson, causing controversy as it contained full nudity.

In 1985, Belouis Some was sponsored by Swatch in North America and opened for Frankie Goes To Hollywood on their US tour. The Some People video was also simultaneously running as a nationwide Swatch TV commercial. In 1986, Belouis Some headlined the “Swatch Live” show at the Beacon Theatre in New York.

In 1986, Belouis Some supported Queen on their “Magic” stadium tour, including opening the famous Knebworth concert, one of the largest concerts ever held in the UK and Freddie Mercury’s last ever live performance with Queen.

The Belouis Some song Round Round, produced by Bernard Edwards, was included in the 1986 John Hughes movie Pretty In Pink, the platinum-selling soundtrack album is on Rolling Stone magazine’s “25 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time”.

Everybody in Milwaukee knows Mark Waldoch. Either they met him working at the legendary Atomic Records, behind a bar at one of Milwaukee’s leading cocktail locales, or most likely singing from the bottom of his heart to the top of his lungs for over the past 25 years.  

A songwriter and multi-instrumentalist punk crooner with a raw, uniquely powerful voice, he has opened, guitar tech-ed, or performed with everyone from Arcade Fire, Justin Vernon’s Volcano Choir, Interpol, Sylvan Esso, Daniel Johnston, Bright Eyes. The list goes on and on and on.
 Born to Indo-Trinidadian and Puerto Rican/Syrian immigrants in NYC, Waldoch and his brother were pulled by their mother from the big city to the deep Midwest as kids to escape an abusive father. His mother passed shortly after, and Waldoch was adopted by a Racine, Wisconsin family—out of the frying pan and into a John Hughes movie.
 It’s no wonder that he gravitated toward something outside the mainstream, which he found, ironically, at a store called Mainstream Records. Love and infatuation came young, aimed at the likes of the Cure, Siouxsie, the Smiths, R.E.M., the Velvet Underground, and Love and Rockets. The list goes on and on.
 Inspired by those things and led by a heart that’s always open, Waldoch has been creating songs to match his passion and perfectionism with his pen and his pedalboard. He’s played solo and in various bands over the years, but nothing quite scratched his lifelong itch until now—The Hallelujah Ward’s Everybody Swoons. With drummer Dan Didier (The Promise Ring, Maritime) and bassist Paul Hancock (Testa Rosa), Waldoch finally put the pieces into place. Some of the melodies and seeds of its songs have been simmering for 10 years; some came to life just as this trio did.
Waldoch’s powerful lyrics range from deeply personal to complete fiction, and the music they exist inside is similarly familiar yet new, with elements of indie-pop, shoegaze, even art-rock, and Brit pop.
Everybody Swoons will be out digitally and on limited-edition vinyl, out now via Foreign Leisure Records.

 EMF British dance-rock quintet, EMF formed in Cinderford, England, in October 1989. All five original members were veterans of the local music scene before founding EMF, whose name supposedly stood for “Epsom Mad Funkers" (although it was widely speculated that the initials instead represented "Ecstasy Mother Fuckers"). Within two months of formation, the group played its first gig; after unearthing a Casio sampler and sequencer in a local thrift shop, a light techno element was added to their rock-oriented sound.

Their debut album, SCHUBERT DIP, was released in May 1991. It was certified platinum (over a million copies sold) in the US in September 1991. It had reached a peak chart position of #3 in the UK and #12 in the US, as well as finishing the year at #57 overall.

By the end of 1991, their infectious debut single “Unbelievable” had conquered the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK. The single was certified gold (over 500,000 copies sold) in the US in May 1991. The song was in such heavy rotation for most of the year in America that it finished as the #6 single overall for the year.

Starting June 14, 2025, you’ll be starting an 11-date West Coast tour with Space Hog. These are their first USA shows in 30 years.

Steve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career.

Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. 

The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam’s iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam’s Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller’s father John. 

The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980’s “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. 

The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. 

The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London’s Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020’s comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they’re stronger and more relevant than ever. 

The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl’s “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history.

NYC-based The Ritualists’ upcoming album, Too Pure To Cure (out now) is a trip. Produced and mixed by GRAMMY-winner Mario J McNulty (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Prince), the album is packed with the band’s signature mix of goth, glam, and modern rock, all wrapped up in their larger-than-life energy.

Following their darkly danceable single "You Know Better", the band has recently released "The Wake" —a soaring, synth-heavy anthem inspired by classic ‘80s dark fantasy films (The NeverEnding Story, anyone?) and the shimmering hooks of the New Romantic era. Frontman Christian Dryden describes it as a reflection on childhood, resilience, and the ability to pull oneself out of tough situations. Limahl stops by the show to discuss his latest release, how taking a chance with Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran helped his band get a record deal, coming out to his Mum, and so much more.

“The original ‘70s track has been a favorite on my 'Evening' playlist for a long time,” says UK music topliner LIMAHL about his reimagining of the classic folk/rock hit “A Horse With No Name” that is released via Christopher Music on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. “The idea to reimagine it was always ticking away in  the back of my mind.”

The song was first released in 1971 in the UK (1972 in the US). The original was composed and performed by folk rock trio America and topped Billboard’s Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts (it reached #3 on the UK Singles chart and was certified gold in 1972). Adapting the ‘70s musical aesthetics and injecting a bit of ‘90s electronica, Limahl’s updated version of the song carries a bit of a retro-futuristic quality that feels equally at home in 2025. 

“The ‘90s have been enjoying a revival which prompted me to experiment with the drums/rhythms from that decade,” he explains. “Then the jerky, ‘Jupiter 8’ analogue synthesizer/sequencer was added with a filtering envelope, and it became an important personality in the track.” He also toyed with the iconic non-lexical “la la” vocal and updated it, incorporating it further into the song. Absent on the ‘70s original but included in this rendition is the ‘la la’ motif in the intro, the key-change on the last verse, and in the final chorus, the ‘la la’s' crisscrossing the main lyric with the melody. Saying that, almost as an afterthought, a guitar from standout musician Steve Cooper was added, and it became the "icing on the cake.”

The resulting track transforms the classic folk track with a mesmerizing and hypnotic synth-dominated swirl, making the song pop and click in ways that would have been unimaginable in the 1970s. The equally mesmerizing accompanying video bursts with surreal and psychedelic imagery, reflecting the song’s hallucinatory spirit. 

Winning the hearts of millions of fans in the ‘80s as the lead singer of British band Kajagoogoo, Limahl enjoyed the instant celebrity of hitting the top of the charts with their debut single "Too Shy" (75million+ streams to date) which was followed by two more Top 20 hits "Ooh To Be Ah" and "Hang On Now" (all of which he co-wrote). Limahl struck out on his own and soon re-emerged in the charts again with his first solo single "Only For Love," That was quickly followed with the Giorgio Moroder–produced worldwide smash "Neverending Story" (151million+ streams to date)," the theme song from the hit film of the same name.

The siblings’ father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn’t fall far from the tree. 

They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls.  Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago.  Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad...  The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."

The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.

Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight.

Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he’s been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he’s witnessed almost all… but there’s undoubtedly more that he hasn’t seen.  But it hasn’t shocked him. In fact, it’s intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that’s the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion’s den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He’s interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O’Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn’t quite pay the bills, especially in Boston.

So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others.  He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren’t constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. 

In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. 

Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we’re talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).

Nearly two decades later, it’s still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. Yay.

Bridget Barkan is a chameleon artist who shape-shifts through genre and style with a thread of raw truth and soul, woven into every melody and lyric. A native New Yorker, she has toured the world with pop/glam band Scissor Sisters and has performed with Bright Light Bright Light and Slow Knights. Starring in LGBTQ romantic classic “Walk with Me,” as a singer/songwriter, featured on the original album as well. As a singer, she has also opened for Lady Gaga, and has shared the stage with Drag legends Joey Arias, Murray Hill, and more. She worked closely with Baz Luhrmann as the voice of Misty Holloway on the Netflix show “The Get Down.” Bridget has released singles with the House DJ/producer legend Todd Terry as well as numerous of her own singles. As a child actress, she has appeared in countless commercials and Sesame Street. She has starred in HBO’s Everyday People, Sherrybaby, Redacted, God’s Pocket, Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick and had a recurring role as a one-legged “hooker” on Law & Order: SVU. On stage, Barkan has appeared in numerous productions including Dog Sees God and alongside Lea Michelle in a workshop of Spring Awakening.

 
 "Heartbroken Ones” was a practice in healing, purging, and processing what Barkan was going through. “It helped me get through one of the worst moments of my life. It was the acceptance I was singing to myself,” Barkan explains. “All that mattered was releasing the pain that this indiscretion had caused.” Working with producer Austin Bello (Nikki Pope, FNKHOUSER, Goldvein) again  who worked on her previous single “Good Things” and singer songwriter Poet Hawkins, she crafted the song in “a more old soul approach at first. But then I kept listening to my friend Natti Vogel's song ‘FAB (Free Ass Bitch),’ which also was a healing song, which had a more pop and synth based energy, so we went in that direction, instead. We took parts of a voice memo and created a soundscape which really captured the inner world I was in.”

A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through life, love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let’s Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic’s crew. Having inherited her father’s knack for songwriting, Bridget’s intrinsic artistry and talent is a legacy she proudly carries.

Lenny Zenith is more than an artist—he’s a trailblazer in the transgender community, whose life and music have broken boundaries and shattered stereotypes. His career, spanning decades, includes leading iconic bands like Jenifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, Pop Comb, and RZA as well as his collaborations with industry legends like James Murphy and Wharton Tiers. Lenny’s genre-bending sound draws from his Cuban heritage, merging rock with jazz, electronica, and orchestral ballads, resulting in a body of work that’s as diverse as it is powerful.

Lenny’s journey as a transgender man began in his youth in New Orleans, where he struggled to find acceptance while facing the challenges of adolescence. As a young transgender person, he found sanctuary at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) and life-saving support from two compassionate doctors at Tulane Medical Center, who guided him through a difficult time.

Yet, even with this support, Lenny’s path was filled with hurdles. Outed in high school by a classmate, Lenny was forced to leave McMain Magnet School (New Orleans), completing his education in isolation. Despite these challenges, his strength and determination led him to continue his musical career, though his transgender identity remained hidden from the public eye for many years. Fear for his safety kept him silent, but Lenny’s artistic expression always reflected his inner truth.

Now, Lenny is no longer silent. In 2018, he fully embraced his identity with the release of What If The Sun, followed by the 2022 trans anthem “Where Is Safe,” a powerful response to the growing threats against transgender people, particularly youth, in the United States. With He/Hymn, Lenny steps forward once again—boldly sharing his story through music that speaks to the universal need for acceptance, love, and healing.

With He/Hymn, Lenny Zenith’s artistic vision reaches new heights, showcasing both his growth as an artist and the assured power of his voice. It is a remarkable testament to his journey and his extraordinary talent.

Richard Sparks was born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he studied English Language and Literature), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O’clock News. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese’s The Secret Policeman’s Ball. UK TV credits include The Famous Five, The Flying Kiwi, The Optimist, The Worst of Hollywood, and a lot of script editing. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved with his family to Los Angeles. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams, and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV’s Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well as writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000s. Along the Cherry Lane is his biography of the music producer, Milt Okun.
“High Adventure Spiced with Low Comedy,” inspired by his love of online role-playing games, New Rock New Role is the first of four volumes Richard has written so far in the New Rock fantasy series and is his fiction debut. The Next book in the series is New Rock New Realm.

Yaroslav Barsukov is a writer of fantasy, science fiction, and everything in between. 
He’s an author with a unique background in physics and software engineering, and has emerged as a distinctive voice in the realm of speculative fiction. 
Born in Cold War-era Moscow and educated at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and Austria's Vienna University of Technology, Barsukov initially pursued a career in software engineering. His entry into the literary world was serendipitous, stemming from his involvement in game development where he translated a companion tale to a game's mythology. 
This experience marked the beginning of his writing journey, and he started crafting short stories in English around 2014. Barsukov's work is celebrated for its innovative blend of fantasy and science fiction elements, diverging from the traditional hard-science SF model. His acclaimed novella "Tower of Mud and Straw" was shortlisted for the Nebula Award and received a Kirkus Star, demonstrating his prowess in weaving narratives that explore the human condition through a speculative lens.
His stories, characterized by high-fantasy filigree and physics reminiscent of alchemy, have appeared in renowned publications such as Galaxy's Edge, Nature: Futures, and StarShipSofa. Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. 

Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.

Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France).  

Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland’s Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland’s flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. 

Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025.

Amy True, also writing as Amy Trueblood is a celebrated and award-winning author.

Her journey to publication was not straightforward, facing challenges and rejections before successfully publishing her books. This dedication and perseverance provides an engaging talking point with audiences.

Bob and Lisa Kekaula made The BellRays happen in 1990 in Riverside, California but they weren’t really thinking about any of this then. They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React.

So they took everything they knew about; the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Who, the Ramones Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, the DB’s, Jimmy Reed, and Led Zeppelin (to name a very few to whom “BLUES IS THE TEACHER”) and pressed it into service.

Those bands and artists have since become “buzz words”, things to imitate and sound like. That was never The BellRays intention. The BellRays were never about coming up with a “sound”, or fitting in with a scene. It was about the energy that made all that music so irresistible. The BellRays’ influences learned from the Blues and then learned how to make it their own. The Beatles wanted to play R&B, converted that energy, and invented “Rubber Soul”. The Ramones were trying to be Del Shannon or Neil Sedaka and out came “Rocket to Russia”.

It’s an organic trail that flows through Bob and Lisa and the current rhythm section of Pablo Rodas (Lisa and the Lips, Alber Solo) on bass and Craig Waters (Countdowns, Andre Williams, Cody Chestnut) on drums, and comes out honest and urgent. You will learn and you will feel. Blues is always teaching and Punk is always preaching.

Since first appearing on the SF scene in 2005, Cat Rambo has published over 250 fiction pieces, including Nebula Award-winning novelette, Carpe Glitter, and nonfiction works that include Ad Astra: The SFWA 50th Anniversary Cookbook (co-edited with Fran Wilde) and writing book, Moving From Idea to Finished Draft. Rambo has been short-listed for the World Fantasy Award, the Compton Crook Award, and the Nebula Short Story Award. A former Vice President and two-term President of the SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America), Cat continues to volunteer with the organization as part of its mentorship program and Grievance Committee. 

They founded the online school The Rambo Academy for Wayward Writers in 2010, specializing in classes aimed at genre writers, which now offers dozens of classes from some of the best writers currently working in speculative fiction.

Jennifer Brozek is a multi-talented, award-winning author, editor, and media tie-in writer. Tracy Bonham sits down to discuss the highs and lows of her music career as well as the challenges in love, parenting, and her breast cancer diagnosis.
 
Tracy Bonham is a classically trained violinist and pianist turned alternative singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 1996 with her twice GRAMMY™nominatedalbum, The Burdens of Being Upright(Island Records). This debut album cast Bonham into the global spotlight with MTV fame and major radio airplay with her #1 alternative chart-topping song Mother Mother, an anthem for disgruntled teenagers of all ages. While so many of her songs have been placed in film and TV throughout the decades, you might have most recently heard Mother Mother in Yellow Jackets season 1 episode 2.

Over the past 27 years, Bonham’s albums and live performances have shown what it is to be an ever-evolving artist. While Bonham sings, she moves from guitar to violin, from violin to piano, and back again. When playing live, her songs from the 90s blend and blur with stylistic changes that she has created over time making her entire repertoire make sense as an entire body of work. She plays the old and new material and even though the songs span thirty years they all continue to be equally relevant. Bonham will be joined by upright bassist Rene Hart (David Amram, James Hunter) and drummer Alvester Garnett (Regina Carter, Abbey Lincoln), and with her new material she connects to something deeper than ever, her true self.
Most of the new songs are performed on the piano giving her the chance to lean back on what made her fall in love with music in the first place. Borrowing harmonic structures and beautiful melodies from her favorite classical romantic composers, Bonham stretches herself artistically to combine this rediscovered passion with her unique and quirky songwriting style to create musical alchemy. This purifying process most certainly acts as a vehicle for inner transformation for Bonham. "It's like going back to the spark I had as a very young musician, discovering the beauty of Ravel and DeBussy and reclaiming that spark and everything that has happened after that". LIFE OF A "LONG PLAYER"

After a 25-year hiatus, long-time rocker Dave Lebental returned to his musical roots and started to investigate the modern music landscape. He quickly realized he was a modern-day Rip Van Winkle who had awoken into a different musical world than the one he left. Digital recording, digital distribution, and social media have all made it much easier to be an independent artist. 

He started writing new songs on his acoustic guitar and learning how to record them in his home studio. The byproduct of these self-produced recording sessions is Dave Lebental's debut solo LP entitled “The Long Player”. The LP is a collection of 11 Americana, Blues, and Rock tracks.  Now 62 years old, Lebental says his songs and sound owe a debt to James Taylor, Ryan Adams, The Eagles, Tom Petty,  and The Beatles.

 In the great pantheon of musicians transcending above mere “celebrity” status, the late MICHAEL HUTCHENCE towers over most. A consummate “rock star” if there ever was one, he embodied the spirit and smoldering swagger of rock ‘n’ roll while possessing one of the most iconic voices in the contemporary music scene. So, it was with an earth-rattling shudder when tragically he passed away in 1997, leaving a mind-numbingly impressive legacy across the entertainment realm. What many didn’t know, however, is that he left some of his brilliance behind in the form of unreleased music. Producer, musician, and personal friend DANNY SABER (Madonna, Rolling Stones, U2) has completed some of these musical pieces to continue and extend Hutchence’s impact. The new single “ONE WAY” was released, April 5, 2024 via Boss Sonics.

“’One Way’ is the culmination of nearly two decades of work,” says Saber. “One of the fundamental reasons for releasing this music is to allow the fans to hear Michael’s voice on something new and fresh, offering a glimpse into what might have been, and, in turn, reawakening millions of people who may have simply forgotten about him.”

“Michael first contacted me in 1995 soon after the release of my album It’s Great When You’re Straight,” recalls Saber, referring to the UK #1 album by his band Black Grape with Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder. “Michael was a huge fan of my record and wanted to find the right sound for a solo record, a sound that would galvanize all the success he had with INXS and allow him to establish himself as a solo artist and spread his creative wings outside the confines of being the frontman of one of the most successful bands in the world.”

Working closely with Hutchence, the two became friends and creative partners. “Over the next two years, we became very close collaborators, and the period we worked together was one of the best times of my life,” Saber remembers. “I had just broken through with a #1 record and having Michael as a ‘big brother’ to help me navigate this was so important to me.”

Gerald says…When I was in high school, my chemistry teacher approached me and asked with a sly grin, “You interested in mining?” I told him absolutely not. I was going to be a writer. Little did I suspect that he wanted to send me to a student conference on metallurgy where I could seek the fellowship of like-minded teens on a minimally supervised road-trip to the Big City. Undeterred by my abrupt negative response, he grumbled, “Well, you’re interested in mining your own business, aren’t you?” And he sent me anyway. Now I realize I should’ve listened more carefully to everything he said.

Rob Mabry was born on November 22, 1966, in San Antonio, Texas.  He spent the better part of his youth in Bavaria (Germany), where his parents both worked for the US government.  He developed a love of movies at an early age through countless hours spent at Sunday matinees on the tiny Air Force base in Bad Aibling, Germany where he lived.  His father owned an 8mm movie camera and often enlisted his son in home movie projects.  The spark was lit.  

Mabry spent his formative years indulging his passion for storytelling.  He developed his own comic books, wrote plays for his friend’s to perform and when his dad was feeling generous; he borrowed the 8mm movie camera and experimented making movies.

In the eighties, Mabry enlisted in the US Army and joined a public affairs unit as a military journalist.  While highly regarded as a writer, he found the life of a soldier to be rigid and ill-suited to his non-conformist attitude.  Eventually, he and the Army would part ways.  

In his twenties, Mabry pursued a career as a screenwriter.  He wrote a number of spec scripts that garnered limited attention.  Living in Atlanta and outside the Hollywood system, prospects were dim and he resolved to focus on a career that would support his family.

 In 2017, Mabry signed up for the 48-Hour Film Project in San Antonio, a film race to write, shoot, edit and deliver a 4-7 minute short film in just two days.  He would go on to compete in a dozen more “48s” and complete over twenty short films ranging in length from three to thirty minutes, but the job wasn't finished.

Although his short films were recognized in multiple film festivals, earning laurels and awards along the way, the dream of making a feature-length film still burned.  Emerging from the fog of COVID, Mabry resolved to make the dream a reality and spent the next six months developing the script for his first feature film, “The Legend of El Chupacabra.”   (The Movie is now available on Tubi.)

The horror-comedy was financed through crowdfunding, personal funds and support from friends and family.  Filming was done mostly on the weekends in the fall of 2022 and a heavy load of post-production work and visual effects took up most of 2023.  The film had its local premiere in October of 2023 and debuted on DVD/Blu-ray on May 10, 2024.  The Legend of El Chupacabra will hit streaming platforms in the Summer of 2024.  

Mabry believes that there is a lesson in his journey to become a feature film writer/director.  He frequently shares his adage that “It is never too late to make your first movie.  It is never too late to live out your dream.”

Born of steel, fire, and black wind, J.V. Hilliard was raised as a highlander in the foothills of a once-great mountain chain on the confluence of the three mighty rivers that forged his realm’s wealth and power for generations.

His father, a peasant twerg, toiled away in industries of honest labor and instilled in him a work ethic that would shape his destiny. His mother, a local healer, cared for his elders and his warrior uncle, who helped to raise him during his formative years. His genius brother, whose wizardly prowess allowed him to master the art of the abacus and his own quill, trained with him for battles on fields of green and sheets of ice.

Hilliard’s earliest education took place in his warrior uncle’s tower, where he learned his first words. His uncle helped him to learn the basics of life—and, most importantly, creative writing.

Hilliard’s training and education readied him to lift a quill that would scribe the tale of the realm of Warminster, filled with brave knights, harrowing adventure, and legendary struggles. He lives in the city of silver cups, hypocycloids, and golden triangles with his wife, a ranger of the diamond. They built their castle not far into the countryside, guarded by his own two horse hounds, Thor and MacLeod, and reside there to this day. I am an epic fantasy/dark fantasy writer and author of The Last Keeper and Vorodin’s Lair, books one and two of the Warminster Saga (www.jvhilliard.com). Book three launches in July 2023 and the final book in the series launches in Q4 of 2023. 

The series is also being licensed to an AR/VR video game company to be made into one of the first “melded” reality games… allowing you to play on your computer, via phone, or with your headset. I am also exploring options to turn the Realm of Warminster into a graphic novel series, with a publisher TBD.

Lastly, I am the owner of Altered Reality Magazine (alteredrealitymag.com) and help authors of speculative fiction and poetry find a portal to publication.

Singer Dariann Leigh stops by the show to talk about leaving her small town and moving to Nashville to follow her musical dream and more.

Dariann Leigh is infatuating; all things to all people.

She is effervescent yet reserved, accessible and unobtainable, red carpet glam and camo in a tree stand. Combining big-city beauty with small-town humility, Dariann may take on many appearances, but one thing is for sure – she is resilient and wholeheartedly herself, making her a role model for the upcoming generation.

From her one-stop town in Karlstad, MN (Population 713), Dariann captured the star power of the original women of country music from lyrics bleeding through static-filled radios and scratched CDs; even in the middle of nowhere, those melodies set the scene for a dream that would ultimately define the course of her entire life. She doesn’t just want to make music, she wants to write the soundtrack for hairbrush singers, dashboard drummers, and air guitar players everywhere.

“As a kid,” says Leigh, “I remember closing my eyes, plugging my headphones in, and listening to tracks that ended up being the theme songs to my daydreams. I want to be that artist for someone else.”

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chris to discuss some of his iconic photos and the stories behind them.

Over the past 50 years, Chris’ signature work with a galaxy of A-List actors, models, athletes and musicians has helped them define their public image while establishing his reputation as one of the most respected photographers in the entertainment industry.  Drawn to the excitement of music as a teenager growing up in Northern California, Chris began his career by shooting local rock shows for fun. He quickly graduated to headlining acts and, since moving to Los Angeles in the early 1980’s, has worked with a massive catalog of performers in the music and entertainment industry.  

He has shot the best of the best in the music world including ground-breaking bands like Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana, George Michael, Iggy Pop, No Doubt, Henry Rollins, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Scott Weiland and Soundgarden.  These images have regularly appeared in Rolling Stone, Spin, RayGun, Vibe, Musician as well as on the covers of more than 300 record albums and CDs.

Along with his significant commercial and editorial contributions as a music photographer, Chris’ portfolio also includes an equally impressive group of A-list actors from Johnny Depp to Dustin Hoffman, sports icons from Kobe Bryant to Wayne Gretzky, and television shows from American Idol to So You Think You Can Dance.  His images have been in Entertainment Weekly, US, Stuff, Maxim, Premiere, British Elle and W. 

In the last few years Chris has presented multiple exhibitions celebrating his iconic music photography.  He started with Greatest Hits: Los Angeles and then followed up with GH: Martini Ranch, GH: George Michael, GH: Grunge, GH: Pearl Jam and GH: Michael Hutchence.  He is currently working on his Greatest Hits documentary and expanding the exhibition worldwide.

His natural talent, versatility and tireless pursuit of artistic expression continue to grow no matter the medium.  “Regardless of what I’ve been able to accomplish in the past, there are always new mountains to climb and new borders to cross,” Chris explains. “I’m excited by where I’m going and what lies ahead… by the journey as well as the destination.”

Before taking the plunge in 2004 into full-time writing, technologist turned author Edward M. Lerner spent thirty years in high tech at every level from engineer to senior vice president. Many novels later, he’s glad (and still just slightly surprised) that he leaped.

He worked at such techie havens as Bell Labs, Hughes Aircraft, and Northrop Grumman—and at a long-gone start-up of which you’ve likely never heard. He delivered high-tech products and systems to government agencies (including NASA, the FBI, and the Defense Department) and commercial customers as varied as AT&T and McDonald’s. Along the way, he visited a satellite factory, flew the space shuttle training simulator, wandered about the space station trainer, and watched a space shuttle launch. Sooner or later, all that experience shows up in his fiction.

Lerner’s novels run the gamut from technothrillers like Energized (solar-power satellites), Small Miracles (medical nanotech), and Fools’ Experiments (AI) to traditional science fiction, like Dark Secret and his InterstellarNet series, to (with NY Times bestselling author Larry Niven) the space epic Fleet of Worlds series. Ed’s fiction has been nominated for Hugo, Prometheus, and Locus awards, and won the inaugural Canopus Award.

Ed’s short fiction has appeared in major science fiction magazines, anthologies, and collections. His short story “Grandpa?” became the award-winning short film “The Grandfather Paradox.”

He also writes nonfiction, most notably Trope-ing the Light Fantastic: The Science Behind the Fiction. He also teaches the occasional writing class, blogs regularly on the state of science and SF. He has spoken at, among venues, the Library of Congress and the US Naval Academy. His fiction has been translated into ten languages.

The varied career(s) didn’t just happen: Ed’s education is almost as eclectic, with degrees in physics, computer science, and business.

Lerner is a member of the Science-fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and  SIGMA (not an acronym, and sometimes known as “The Science Fiction Think Tank”).

Lerner was born in Chicago and has lived in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York. He now resides in Virginia.

    Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he studied English Language and Literature), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O’clock News. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese’s The Secret Policeman’s Ball. UK TV credits include The Famous Five, The Flying Kiwi, The Optimist, The Worst of Hollywood, and a lot of script editing. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved with his family to Los Angeles. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV’s Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000’s. Kathryn K. Abdul-Baki was born in Washington D.C. to an Arab father and an American mother. She grew up in Iran, Kuwait, Beirut, and Jerusalem where she attended Arabic, British, and American schools. She attended the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, has a BA in journalism from George Washington University in Washington D.C., and an MA in creative writing from George Mason University, Virginia. As an astute observer of two distinct cultures, she has published five works of fiction, some of which have been taught at universities in multicultural literature, women’s studies, and Arab studies departments. She is the recipient of the Mary Roberts Rinehart Award for short fiction. Abdul-Baki has three grown children and resides with her husband in McLean, Virginia. Celebrating the launch of Season 8 and our 150th episode with the band behind our new music, Fast Suzi. I chat with Matt, Greg, and Alex from the band. Joining us on the show is their producer and mine Rich Zei from Third Ear Audio Productions.

Fast Suzi is like the man with 1000 faces. They are a Chicago-based hard rock band, that has changed with the musical world around them. Their long-held mantra of rock 'n' roll to save your soul, is back with a vengeance. New blood, new music, and a new attitude are the driving forces celebrating the band's legacy and a look to the future.

Fast Suzi saw the creativity of two guitar players writing material that jelled instantly.  During that time, their song, "Giving It All To You'' achieved heavy rotation on rock radio.
