In this episode of Broadcastability, we speak to Kathleen Bogart, the Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor at the School of Psychological Science at Oregon State University. Dr. Bogart was born with Moebius syndrome, a rare type of facial paralysis. Drawn to psychology as an undergraduate student, Dr. Bogart was inspired to continue her studies with a focus on her disability but was faced with a total lack of scholarship on Moebius syndrome. During this episode of Broadcastability, Dr. Bogart takes us through her academic and professional journey, which led to her pioneering the intersectional research of Moebius syndrome and psychology. Now, Dr. Bogart is passionate about understanding the differences between acquired and congenital disabilities, supporting her graduate students, and further exploring how disability identity is shaped through other, intersectional identities.

Professor Bacon recounts how his wife's acquired disability introduced them to a community of “creative, ingenious, tenacious” people. He became interested in the undeserved, under-inclusion of people with disabilities in the UK workforce. During our conversation, we come to understand how Bacon uses data analysis to reveal the benefits and shortcomings of business-oriented disability policies across the UK. We conclude with a discussion of the current political state of the world and how political activism amongst disabled people is more important than ever.

In this episode of Broadcastability, we’re joined by Simo Vehmas, a Finnish professor of special education whose work sits at the crossroads of philosophy, disability studies, and social critique. Describing himself as an “intellectual troublemaker,” Vehmas embraces discomfort and disagreement as tools for learning, challenging both his audiences and himself to think more deeply. In this conversation, he reflects on his unconventional path into disability scholarship, sparked not by personal ties but by curiosity, and a resistance to rigid norms. Together, we dig into debates around disability language across cultures, the often-overlooked role of class and privilege in disability studies, and the limits of consensus-driven thinking. The episode also explores the social model of disability, embodiment, vulnerability, and the importance of communicating research beyond academia.

In the fourth episode of the third season of Broadcastability, hosts Chloë Atkins and Zephyr Atkins-Mitra interview Drs. Harold Atkins (no relation), Santhosh Thyagu, and Carolina Rush of The Ottawa Hospital. They talk to them about their unique approach to fighting autoimmune disease by using stem cell transplantation to “re-boot” the body’s immune system. Working together, they try to better manage these types of chronic illness and their accompanying disabling experiences. 

The PROUD Project’s Co-Executive Director, Chloë G. K. Atkins, recently underwent a stem cell transplant under their care to treat a severe form of myasthenia gravis, a rare neuromuscular autoimmune disease.

Dans ce quatrième épisode de la troisième saison de Broadcastability, nos hôtes, Chloë Atkins et Zephyr Atkins-Mitra ont interviewé quelques médecins travaillant à l'hôpital d'Ottawa: Dr Harold Atkins (sans lien avec Chloë Atkins), Dr Santhosh Thyagu, et Dr Carolina Rush. Ils nous parlent de la méthode qu'ils utilisent afin de combattre les maladies auto-immunes en utilisant la greffe de cellules souches pour "réinitialiser" le système immunitaire. In the third episode of Broadcastability Season 2, co-hosts Chloë and Isabelle interview Matilda Feyisayo Ibini, a Nigerian-British playwright and screenwriter. In this episode, Ibini shares her advice for disabled young people who want to go into the arts industry, her ideas for making the arts more inclusive, and her understanding of how narratives shape cultural attitudes and policies - and therefore, how storytelling can be a force for positive change.   Within this framework, she articulates a pressing need to renovate the social imaginary about disability and employment: that disabled individuals can substantively contribute to their communities even though they may require personal or other supports.
