❄️ Narnia brings the winter blockbuster magic

Amid the chaos of real life, cinemas deliver the exact opposite: snow, whimsy and one very dramatic lion. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe continues its global domination, giving mid-2000s kids their own fantasy franchise to obsess over. Tilda Swinton reigns icy and ethereal, Mr Tumnus becomes an unexpected Tumblr boyfriend before Tumblr even exists and everyone leaves the cinema wanting to open every wardrobe in the house just in case. It’s the cosy, snowy escapism 2005 didn’t know it needed.

🎤 Bert Newton signs off and Australia loses its 9am dad

After 13 years of cooking chaos, advertorial mayhem and the nation’s most joyful backstage banter, Good Morning Australia wraps for the final time. Bert Newton farewells his TV kingdom with Belvedere by his side, Karen Moregold reading the stars and a studio full of people who absolutely know they’re witnessing the end of an era. It’s peak Aussie comfort TV — messy, warm and utterly unrepeatable — and its departure leaves a beige 9am-shaped hole in the national routine.

Before Reddit ruled the internet, Digg was the king of user-driven news and this week it launches Digg Spy 2.0, a real-time firehose of votes, comments and story submissions. Web nerds lose their minds, websites crash from sudden traffic spikes and everyone gets hooked on watching the crowd in action. It’s early Web 2.0 energy at its finest: fast, messy, addictive and very “tech bros in cargo shorts discovering the future.”

🍬 The Laffy Taffy ringtone reign begins

D4L unleashes “Laffy Taffy,” the snap-music anthem powered more by ringtones than radio. Teens pay $3.49 for 14 seconds of sugary chaos, Billboard starts counting digital downloads and suddenly the song is climbing the charts like an acrobat. Minimal beats, finger snaps and a hook comparing women to stretchy candy = peak 2005. It becomes one of the best-selling ringtones of the decade and a pre-TikTok blueprint for dance-driven hits.

🏆 50 Cent and Green Day dominate the Billboard Music Awards

Live from Las Vegas, LL Cool J hosts a night where 50 Cent collects six awards (and accepts over the phone like the king of 2005 he is) while Green Day match him with six wins of their own. Kanye declares himself the greatest, no one is surprised and the MGM Grand becomes a time capsule of mid-2000s swagger, eyeliner and ringtone-rich pop culture.

🎡 Wheel of Fortune spins again… briefly

Channel 7 revives Wheel of Fortune with Larry Emdur bringing dad-at-a-BBQ charisma and Laura Csortan adding glam energy and actual interaction (a revolution for the format). Viewers love them but the ratings don’t. By 2006 the wheel stops spinning and reality TV officially eats Australia’s early-evening game shows for lunch.

🔪 Hollywood gets stalked in the new Alex Cross thriller

James Patterson’s latest Alex Cross novel sends the FBI’s favourite detective into a Hollywood murder spree, complete with chilling emails from a killer named Mary Smith. Critics? Brutal. Readers? Also brutal. It’s the kind of mid-2000s airport thriller designed to be read on a long flight then instantly forgotten at the hotel.

Before iPhones, Afterpay and impulse-buying air fryers at midnight, Cyber Monday launches — engineered entirely so people could online shop from their work computers. Websites crash, inboxes explode and retailers discover the day-after-Black-Friday sweet spot. What started as a marketing stunt becomes today’s global retail Thunderdome.

💥 50 Cent goes full GTA

50 Cent: Bulletproof drops on PS2 and Xbox — a chaotic swirl of G-Cash, G-Unit cameos and enough swearing to make Rockstar Games blush. Critics wince, fans rejoice and the game becomes the most 2005 thing ever burned onto a disc. 

🎤 Lindsay Lohan’s raw era begins

Lindsay releases A Little More Personal (Raw) — a darker, emotional pop-rock swing with a music video that becomes an instant tabloid obsession. Critics bicker, fans vibe and the album goes Gold. Nearly two decades later, Gen Z calls it proto-confessional pop and rediscovers it through TikTok trauma edits. As they do.

🇦🇺 INXS kicks off its second act

Remember when buying a CD came with actual malware? In 2005, Sony BMG decided music piracy was so bad they’d fight it by installing spyware on millions of computers. Their “copy protection” hid deep in Windows, opened backdoors for hackers, and made everyone’s IT guy cry. Once exposed, Sony’s PR team had to CTRL-ALT-DELETE the scandal — fast. Lawsuits, recalls, and a massive “our bad” followed.

It was a wild week for the charts — Kanye was digging for gold, Chris Brown was “running it” (literally and metaphorically), and the Black Eyed Peas were getting humpy. On 9 October, Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly steer their Commodore to victory at Mount Panorama, bagging Holden’s sixth Bathurst 1000 win. It’s Skaife’s fifth, Kelly’s first and Ford fans’ collective heartbreak. The track’s hot, the tyres melt and the Holden-Ford rivalry burns brighter than ever. 

🎧 Apple’s “One More Thing” goes video
Steve Jobs slides another gadget flex into 2005 history with the iPod Video — the first iPod that lets you watch TV shows like Lost on a 2.5-inch screen. Steve Jobs blew minds by pulling the new iPod Nano out of his jeans’ tiny pocket. Thinner than a pencil eraser, held 1,000 songs and immediately became the must-have flex of 2005. 

🎤 Jacko’s ghost single

Michael Jackson announced a Katrina charity track with a dream lineup — Mariah, Jay-Z, Mary J, Missy, Snoop. What we got? Nada. The song ghosted harder than a MySpace friend request.

🚘 Transporter 2 defies physics

Jason Statham in Miami, flipping cars 360° to knock off bombs and proving gravity is optional. Critics rolled their eyes, audiences rolled into the box office — nearly $90 million worldwide and Statham locked in as the new millennium’s action guy.

🤠 Brokeback breakthrough

Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain won Venice’s Golden Lion. Two cowboys in love, one of cinema’s most heartbreaking lines and Hollywood finally gave queer love a serious stage. 

🏝️ Reality bites

OG Survivor winner Richard Hatch got indicted for tax evasion. Apparently “outwit, outplay, outlast” didn’t apply to the IRS. He ended up serving three years — proving naked strategy doesn’t beat federal accountants.

🌪️ Katrina’s wrath
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast with catastrophic force, flooding 80% of New Orleans when levees failed. What followed was a disaster of human error as much as nature’s fury — FEMA fumbled, the Superdome became a nightmare and trust in the system was non existent. But there were glimmers of humanity too: the Cajun Navy, hospital staff who refused to abandon patients and strangers who took families into their homes.

🏉 All Blacks untouchable
The Tri Nations wrapped with New Zealand strutting like it was their personal training session. Dan Carter booted, Joe Rokocoko dazzled and the Bledisloe Cup stayed firmly tucked under their arm. South Africa fought hard, Australia… well, let’s just say those Wallaby scrums were softer than a marshmallow in hot Milo.

🎶 Oasis sings about doing nothing
The Importance of Being Idle gave Noel Gallagher his turn on vocals and Britain its newest #1. A Kinks-flavoured anthem about slacking off and not giving a toss — proof that Oasis could still crank out bangers even when they couldn’t be bothered.

🌴 Enter: Rihanna
At just 17, Rihanna dropped her debut album Music of the Sun. It wasn’t world domination yet, but Pon de Replay turned every club into a sweaty Caribbean night. Jay-Z had literally locked her in a Def Jam office until she signed.

🔓 Prison Break kicks off
Michael Scofield got himself jailed, ripped his shirt off to reveal a full prison blueprint tattoo and made everyone rethink their life choices — like, why didn’t you get inked with an elaborate escape plan? Add in T-Bag’s creepy vibes, mob boss toe-snipping and toilets doubling as tunnels — it was instant appointment TV.

😂 We Can Be Heroes bows out
Chris Lilley’s Aussie mockumentary wrapped its season with Ja’mie raising money “for Sudan, but also me,” Pat Mullins rolling across the outback and the Dapto twins keeping it bogan. 🎧 Lil’ Kim keeps it real… illegally. The Queen Bee is sentenced to prison for lying to a grand jury about a shootout outside Hot 97. Turns out the “no snitching” rule doesn’t hold up so well under federal cross-examination.

🎾 Federer serves history. Roger Federer becomes the third man in the Open Era to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles, casually dismantling Andy Roddick in the process. It’s precision, it’s footwork, it’s Swiss efficiency at its finest.
