#64: "Metropolis" (1927) & It's Freakish Relevance to Today

This week it's all about the 1927 German expressionist silent film that is considered one of the first full-length science fiction films ever made: "Metropolis" directed by Fritz Lang. Lumiere Cinema and Music Hall in Beverly Hills put it on with a live performance from Vox Lumiere, which reimagines the soundtrack to the classic film and performed it along with the screening.

Aside from it being an incredible experience, what struck me the most is how relevant the films themes were: a robot being used to spread misinformation, leaders exploiting their workers, an industrial revolution that overrides ethics, and the futurism imagery and captivating special effects.

#62: 4/20 Easter Double Feature | "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973) & "Donnie Darko" (2001)

This week 4/20, the national stoner holiday, fell on Easter Sunday and it won't happen again for another 62 years, so it is cause for a CELEBRATION. This for my group looked like a double feature watch party starting with the 1973 version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and followed by 2001's indie masterpiece "Donnie Darko."

In this episode, your host Elise Hernke, starts by talking about a few recent headlines and some more highly anticipated upcoming films. Then, we look at the film version of Andrew Lloyd Weber's campy Biblical musical that depicts the days leading to Jesus Christ's death from the perspective of his follower famously turned betrayer Judas Iscariot.

After that (at about the 1hr mark), we get to "Donnie Darko," the iconic science fiction indie horror masterpiece that has one of the most memorable soundtracks ever. In this episode, we mostly focus on the EXPLANATION of the plot (we go into grave detail on the philosophy of time travel).

#33: Sweaty Summer Series | DOUBLE FEATURE "La Piscine" (1969) & "A Bigger Splash" (2015)

This week we dive into the movie "A Bigger Splash" (2015) a remake, and the film its based on on, the 1969 French film "La Piscine" AKA "The Swimming Pool" (which was also filmed entirely in English as well). "A Bigger Splash" was made by CMBYN's Luca Guadagnino and stars Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Dakota Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. The 1969 original stars Romy Schneider, Alain Dolan, Maurice Ronet and freaking baby JANE BIRKIN.

These movies are amazing and actually were the inspiration behind this entire aspirational summer series, but they also leave a lot of room for discussion. SO MANY QUESTIONS. I attempt to deep-dive into all the different aspects of the films side by side to try to understand each character in their varied forms - Marianne, Jean-Paul (or Paul), Harry and Penelope.

#32: Sweaty Summer Series | "Overboard" (1987) Wayne Finkelman: Costume Extraordinaire

Venturing further into the sunkissed, sundrenched sweltering sizzling summer series with one of my personal favorites, "Overboard" - the original 1987 cult classic directed by Garry Marshall led by long time Hollywood couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

This film is a fun watch, but also I wanted to highlight the career and life of Wayne A. Finkelman - the incredibly brilliant costume designer behind this film and several others, who passed away far too young in 1994. The Hollywood Heritage Museum curated an exhibit in honor of him and his work in this film in partnership with the Western Costume Co. who dedicated their research library to him. #25: "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), Bon Iver, Heath Ledger & 10 Years Gone By

In this episode, I revisit one of my favorite indie darlings, "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), which lead me on a journey of finding crazy connections between this movie, my favorite artist (Justin Vernon/Bon Iver) and one of my favorite beloved actors, Heath Ledger.

The film directed by Derek Cianfrance, starring Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes, came out 10 years ago this year! Since then, the lead couple became a couple in real life and had children of their own, a documentary about Heath Ledger came out ("I Am Heath Ledger" released in 2017) and Justin Vernon celebrated the 10 year anniversary of his Grammy winning album, self-titled Bon Iver. So this episode is basically dedicated to celebrating those things.

#18: "Last Night in Soho" (2021), Films Inspiring Nostalgia, Stylized Horror & Clever Camera Work

To kick off 2022, I am starting with the Swinging Sixties: a new release movie that stars Thomasin Mckenzie and Anya Taylor Joye and combines horror with swinging sixties nostalgia, "Last Night In Soho."

In this episode, I talk about some of the behind the scenes work that went into capturing some of the most memorable scenes (including a Harry Potter cameo!) and the iconic pink silk chiffon dress.

I also analyze the way that films influence us to do things like make a certain type of meal or change our hair, or how nothing sticks with us like a good horror movie - and hear from you guys about a time when a film made that kind of impact on you (thanks again to all who participated!!!).

#15: Holiday Hidden Gems | Before "A Philadelphia Story," there was "Holiday" (1938)

This week I dive into my favorite George Cukor/Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant collaboration: "Holiday" (1938) and that's really saying something because I absolutely love "A Philadelphia Story" (1940).

"Holiday" is a holiday rom-com that is based off a brilliant and biting stage play from 1928 by Philip Barry. The episode is short and sweet like the film, but talking about this Hidden Gem allowed me to dive into some Old Hollywood fun facts, but as it was made more than 80 years ago, it also inspired me to fantasize about what a remake of this movie could look like (could never be better, but could be fun!!).

This weeks episode is on the 2001 drama "Gosford Park," the inspiration for the show "Downton Abbey" (and by the same writer) with an all-star stacked cast, including the likes of Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Clive Owen, Ryan Phillipe, and like 30 more people at least.

It is an incredible film full of so many "breadcrumbs" for us to dive into and a very complicated storyline which I am here to break down. As always, there will be spoilers & you will probably enjoy the eppy more if you have seen the films, but you are also welcome to listen in without seeing if you want to regardless!

I also start the episode by diving into topical news (this time in the form of early 2000's females FINALLY GETTING THEIRS this past week! LETS GO!).

To finish off the last episode of ELVIRATOBER where we work through her 40th Anniversary Special (found on Shudder) and her new memoir "Yours Cruelly," we are doing a deep-dive into the 1973 flick "Messiah of Evil." It is considered a "Lovecraftian Giallo horror" so I will talk about what that means & give a breakdown of the movie (yes, there are spoilers!).

I also will talk about Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson's adventures and misadventures that she wrote about in her memoir from the 1980s on (trigger warning, some sexual assault related content), and how she found love and happiness at 70 years young.

#7: ELVIRATOBER Pt. 3 "City of the Dead" (1960) + The Salem Witch Trials

This weeks episode analyzes the 1960's horror classic "City of the Dead," about one woman's' journey to Whitewood, New England to research the Salem Witch Trials, only to find that the witches are far from dead and gone.

I use this episode to give a brief overview of the Salem Witch Trials - how they started, what it was all about - and how this part of history has seen itself replicated time and time again, specifically looking at society at the time of this release (before witches were liberated in what we now refer to as the second wave of feminism) and instances that happened to Elvira herself in the 1980s!

#6: ELVIRATOBER Pt. 2 "House on Haunted Hill" (1959) & "Elvira's Haunted Hills" + NYFF Screenings Last Take

This week we look at the 1959 Winston Castle classic horror flick "House on Haunted Hill" - Elvira's first horror movie (which she watched at 8 years old!) and one of the films curated by her for the recently released 40th Anniversary Special, which stars the one and only Vincent Price, and had a major impact on horror cinema to follow.

I also look at Elvira's 2001 feature film "Elvira's Haunted Hills" which did not have the same impact... and discuss what makes a parody film work when it is built on being "bad" and what I would have done to change it.

We are kicking off Spooky Season with ELVIRA-TOBER... to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the character (which was created in 1981) and the release of Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson's new memoir "Yours Cruelly, Elvira" which was released on September 21st, 2021, we are going to dedicate this month to the queen behind your bad dreams.

We will be working through Elvira's picks herself, which she put together for her special put on by Shudder: Elvira's 40th Anniversary Very Scary, Very Special Special!

On this weeks episode I talk about the new a24 movie @ZOLA based on a Twitter thread from 2015, a feat in modern storytelling, and strippers on-screen with guest spot by my friend Lexi.

Directed by Janicza Bravo, from a screenplay by Bravo and Jeremy O. Harris, it stars Taylour Paige as Zola, (whose full name is A'ziah King) a part-time stripper who is convinced by her new friend (Riley Keough) to travel to Tampa, Florida, in order to earn money, only to discover that the subtext of the trip is far more than she signed up for.

#3: Fashion In Film | Arthurian Legend Brought To Screen With "The Green Knight" (2021) ft. Reba Hayes

This weeks episode focuses on the new David Lowry masterpiece THE GREEN KNIGHT, based on Arthurian legends anonymous poem "Sir Gawain & the Green Knight" starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton.

During the slightly longer running time (sorry - there is just SO much to cover with this one!), I focus on the source material, how it was meant to be released in March of 2020 and did not make it out to the big screens until "one year hence," as well as the symbolism, costume accuracy and production design. But I don't do it alone! We are joined by special guest Reba Hayes (https://www.instagram.com/rebalikethesinger/) who has a particular knowledge of medieval history, an entertaining story about her name, and a passion for TWINS!

There will be light spoilers about the film & it is recommended to watch the film beforehand to enjoy the episode fully.
