Marcus Aurelius was one of the most powerful people in the ancient world, but his life was filled with war, plague, political instability, loss, and responsibility. During all of it, he kept writing private notes to himself about how to stay grounded, deal with difficult people, control his anger, accept what he couldn’t change, and live according to his values. Those writings eventually became Meditations, one of the most influential works of Stoic philosophy.

In this episode, I break down some of Marcus Aurelius’s biggest ideas and quotes, including the difference between what you can and can’t control, why “the obstacle becomes the way,” how our interpretation of events can create additional suffering, why remembering death can actually make life more meaningful, and why action matters more than endlessly thinking about the person you want to become. More than anything, this is an episode about how to handle setbacks, uncertainty, other people, and your own mind without letting every difficult situation throw you off course.

In Part 1 of this deep dive into Sigmund Freud, I break down some of his most influential ideas about the human mind, including the unconscious, repression, the id, ego and superego, defense mechanisms, Freudian slips, dreams, and the possibility that we may not fully understand why we do the things that we do. Freud believed that hidden desires, fears, memories, and internal conflicts could influence our behavior without ever fully entering conscious awareness, and that idea would go on to completely reshape psychology and modern culture.

I also get into the origins of psychoanalysis, why Freud became so interested in hidden psychological causes, how he thought the mind protects itself through things like projection, rationalization and denial, and why he viewed dreams as a window into the unconscious. The episode ends as we get into Freud's theories about childhood and how early experiences can shape adult personality. Part 2 will pick up there and dive into some of his stranger and more controversial ideas, including psychosexual development, the Oedipus complex, repetition compulsion, relationships, the death drive, religion, and what Freud may actually have gotten right.
