He tells us how he went from a twelve‑year‑old cadet to the highest‑ranked soldier in Waterloo Region, what a reservist actually is, and why his regiment is one year older than Canada itself.

We hear about his first summer of real army training (including shooting a gun for the first time and rappelling off a cliff), his deployment to Bosnia during Operation Palladium, and a powerful story about a woman pushing a wheelbarrow full of money just to buy one bag of groceries. Jason explains what daily life is like for part‑time soldiers, how teens in grade 11 can get started in the reserves, and why leadership, initiative, and appreciating what you have matter so much in and out of the military.

Kids will learn:

  • What the Canadian Army Reserve is and how it’s different from full‑time soldiers
  • How Canadian troops helped people in Bosnia after a civil war
  • What it takes to become a leader in the military
  • Why Canadian military history helps us understand who we are today

She’s a Canadian Olympian, a Registered Dietitian, and one of the toughest runners out there.

And when we say tough, we mean it. She once finished a race with a broken leg. Yeah, you read that right! We had to hear the full story—what happened, why she kept running, and how she bounced back to crush even bigger goals (like making it to the Olympics!).

We also got into what it takes to train for a marathon, the best pre-race snacks (spoiler: bagels are involved 🥯), and why fueling your body the right way is so important. Plus, Krista tells us how she went from playing university hockey to becoming one of Canada’s best long-distance runners.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to push through pain, keep going when things get tough, or just want to know what marathon runners actually eat mid-race, this episode is for you!

How do you know you are in one, and how do you get out of it?

Amy breaks down what a setback really is, how to know when you're in one, and introduces us to her 4-step setback cycle —establish, embrace, explore, and emerge. We learn how to identify setbacks and work through the 4 phases by asking key questions like what energizes and disengages you.

Even though her book is mostly about business leaders and how their setbacks helped them succeed, Amy shares how teens can use these steps to tackle their own challenges, whether it's school stress, friendship issues, or other problems. Plus, she opens up about her journey of facing rejection after rejection before landing a publishing deal and becoming a bestselling author.

Amy shows us how we can all learn from our challenges and come out stronger on the other side. It was super inspiring to hear Amy's story and see how we can use her tips in our own lives!

What is a Chief Evangelist? That’s what today’s episode with Ana Lorena Fabrega is all about....asking questions, finding answers and then asking more questions!

We were so excited to talk about Synthesis and so much more with Ana, or Ms. Fab as her students call her.

We learn about Ana’s journey from being a teacher in a traditional classroom to quitting that job to pursuing her passion for asking questions and thinking about education in a new way, which led her to Synthesis.

There are so many different ways to learn and we talk about many of them. Including the challenges of a traditional classroom, micro school, forest school, the Montessori Method, International Baccalaureate learning and more. Plus, Ana shares with us her ideal school day, and it’s not at all what you think!

Ana tells how Synthesis started and we chat about SpaceX and Elon Musk too. Then we trade stories and thoughts about Synthesis and the three of us get a chance to tell our listeners about this fantastic gamified learning experience we get to participate in each week.

If you are curious about Synthesis listen to this episode and then click the link for more information.

]]> What is Synthesis?

Synthesis School

Here are some of the fun things we talked about in our conversation today and where you can find them in this episode

6:25 - Ana’a job is Chief Evangelist at Synthesis. Learn what Synthesis is and what a Chief Evangelist does.

13:17 - We hear what Ana’s ideal school day looks like.

20:15 - How does International Baccalaureate learning work? We do our best to explain it.

30:38 - How did Synthesis start? It involves Ad Astra, SpaceX, Elon Musk and Josh Dahn.

39:32 - We talk about the LEGO effect.

We were!

What is it like to be an Olympian, play for Team Canada and win an Olympic medal?

These are just some of the things we talk to Jane Kerr Thompson about. She is an Olympian who competed for Team Canada in both the 1984 summer games in Los Angeles and the 1988 games in Seoul Korea where she won a bronze medal in the relay.

After her Olympic career Jane went to the University of Florida on a swimming scholarship. She was captain of the team and had many swimming successes during her college career and she graduated with a degree in finance. Today Jane is a Managing Director at Accenture.

Jane gives us insight into what it takes to be an elite athlete. How much hard work does it take to become an Olympian? What are athletes feeling just before they walk onto the pool deck for a race? What does it feel like to stand on the podium for Canada?

We also chat about what happens after the Olympics. How do athletes transition away from their sport? What are some of the challenges they face?

Here are some of the fun things that came up in conversation today and where you can find them in this episode!

We had so much fun talking LEGO with Graeme Dymond that we had to make our conversation into two episodes.

In Bricktastic: Part 1 we talk to Graeme about what it takes to be a LEGO Master Builder. We learn that there are many different Master Builder titles and so many ways to become one. But no matter which title or job you have it is really just another way of saying you get to wake up everyday and play with LEGO bricks for a living.

Graeme’s journey started as a toddler playing with LEGO at home and he never stopped playing with LEGO bricks. This led him to a Brick Factor competition at the LEGO Discovery Centre in Toronto which he won and then he went on to become a LEGO Master Builder and a LEGO Certified Professional. We also discover what Graeme’s first LEGO set was and what his all time favourite LEGO set is.

We even talk about the LEGO Masters Builder show that is on TV right now!

Did you know that mini figure legs can be used in many different ways that are not just legs? We didn’t, but Graeme shows us this amazing new way to use legs when building LEGO.

We talk about so many different LEGO sets. If you are wondering what they look like or are interested in building them here is all the set information you will need!
