Monique Berry is a mother of two girls aged 9 and 5 and a full-time Deputy Headteacher in a primary school in Dunstable.  She has been in education for 16 years and senior leadership for 9 years.  Monique’s passion and expertise lies in inclusion, behaviour and alternative education. Cleo de Jong is a newly appointed Deputy Headteacher at a secondary school in North London with responsibility for Curriculum. Previously she led on the Pastoral System: Behaviour and Attitudes and Personal Development.  Cleo is the mother of two daughters aged seven and two and works full time with flexible hours.

Today I am speaking with Florence Okwusogu about the realties of teacher burnout, understanding your own psychology and being a leader of yourself. 

Florence founded Aligned Flow because of her belief that our ability to create a happier and healthier life is intrinsically linked to connecting and expressing our deepest self. This week I speak with Joan who became a teacher because she was passionate about contributing to and improving the learning outcomes and educational experiences for children. Currently, Joan is the Maths Lead at a primary school in North London, a Maths Specialist within her Academy Trust and leads training on Greater Depth and Maths Mastery across her local borough. More recently, she has just taken on the position of Phase Leader for Years 4, 5 and 6.

Previously, Joan worked in a high profile role in the city of London, yet now Joan says she is excited and motivated about teaching and leadership, and enjoys collaborating with colleagues in her own school and the wider school community.

On this week’s episode of the Women Leaders series, I am speaking with Danielle Smith, a walking champion for mental health and wellbeing.  We discuss her journey in leadership, being an empathetic leader, and she shares her passion for mental health and why it is so important for staff to develop an understanding of how it can impact a child’s ability to learn.

Danielle Smith is currently an Assistant Headteacher for mental health and wellbeing at a large primary school in North London. She is responsible for leading PSHE within the school and has implemented many exciting and positive changes such as regular yoga and mindfulness sessions, as well as designing and launching a new curriculum. 

Outside of school, Danielle is a qualified children’s yoga instructor and has also completed courses in mindfulness for children. Alongside her role within the school, she is also currently studying for her Masters in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and looks forward to applying this knowledge and skill set to her future endeavours.

In this second conversation as part of the Women Leaders series,  I sit down with the headteacher at my current  school, Laura Pearce.

Laura has been a headteacher for five years but received the title of headteacher at age of 28.  Being young and dynamic, enabled Laura to make some tough decisions which resulted in success, proving that age simply is nothing but a number.

Since 2016, Laura has been a leader in her current school, part of the Enfield Learning Trust. The original Infant school and Junior school were merged to form a large five-form entry primary school in the heart of a highly diverse area of London. The school is one of the largest in the country. With more than ten years of education experience, she also worked in the role as Executive Headteacher, leading her school alongside a new one form entry primary in its initial stages of becoming a school. She has provided training within the Trust to other leaders as well as on behalf of Enfield Local Authority, specifically focusing on Leading Wellbeing. The school she is currently leading has recently been awarded the Sandwell Chartermark for wellbeing which adds to other awards during her years in leadership.
