The Vessel of Podcast Destiny - Xanadu (1980)

So at the end of Season 2 (July 2022) we created the "Vessel of Podcast Destiny" so that The Universe would pick our next movie for us. It picked "Freaks".

We recorded audio in October of 2022 and neither of us like what we said, how we said it, it was too deep and sad for us at the time, so we decided to put it on hold.

Life, stuff, things, grad school, community upendings, an engagement (Boo said yes...so we're also planning a wedding) all happened and...16months later, we're ready to start season 3. Hey, it's our podcast and we can do whatever the hell we want to with it.

So, the Vessel of Podcast Destiny picked...the 1980 fever dream "Xanadu". Enjoy our stupid, stupid words about first celebrity crushes, the logistics of playing the clarinet by the sea, the Love Boat theme song, and TWO musicals about roller skating culture of the late 70's/early 80's.

So it was really only a matter of time before Normalized Incest came up...

We Watched It And You Should Too - "RoboCop" - (1987)

Season 2, Episode 9 - ROBOCOP.

Man, we forgot how violent this one was. Thanks to Netflix for the LARGE assist on research by having this one included in their "Movies That Made Us" series because hoo-boy did it cause AP to go down a ratings rabbit hole.

There was a fruity "Robot Cocktail", an unnecessary jab at "Law & Order" and Boo shares a story about her constant struggle to get adult-organized after realizing that people like to give and/or send her...just...really weird stuff.

And...we are DANGEROUSLY close to actually finishing our 2nd season and being, like, a real thing.

Y'all...don't watch this one. It's boring and the problematic stuff is REALLY, REALLY TERRIBLE.

There are multiple sequels...Bill Murray managed to have a career after this...and we failed to keep the early 80's from happening.

Summery mojito with our patio mint (that Boo managed to NOT KILL) and AP finds really random music. You know, par for the course.

We Saw It And You Should Too - "Karate Kid: The Musical" (2022)

All right, friends. In a first, we review a new stage production of the pre-Broadway run of "Karate Kid: the Musical" that premiered here in St. Louis in the year of our Lord Twenty-Twenty-Two.

AP & Boo saw it on opening night, then AP's son (aka "The Boy" or "Abraham Lincoln") saw it a few days later with his grandma. So you get stupid, stupid words from THREE people, you lucky sons-o-guns!

We also decided to give y'all a break in terms of podcast length since the last one was AN HOUR LONG. Here's a short commentary to keep you coming back for more...

- End of the school year (and we still have 3 kids)

- AP's actual job cranked up the stress level

We Watched It And You Should Too - "Pet Semetary" (1989)

Yeah, this went to some DARK places, but the "Cherry Semetary" cocktail that AP mixed sure did help make it better. We talk about the original 1989 film, probably too much about the 1992 sequel (no, don't bother) and introduce one of AP's music specialties...COVER to COVER, where we present some manner of original song AND a kick-ass cover or two of it.

In this case, the original 1989 Ramones tune "Pet Semetary" and the 2019 cover of the same name by Starcrawler.

Enjoy these stupid, stupid words and stay glued to the edge of your office chair for the next episode, which is a THREE-FOR-ONE JOHN HUGHES SPECTACULAR that AP has been waiting on since we even vaguely mentioned starting a podcast. Yeah, a lot of these actors are dead, so RIP and pour one out for them.

We toasted these departed souls with the themed beverages of "the 1986 College Experience", the contents of which were a complete surprise to Boo...but came authentically presented by AP pulling it out of a plastic bag...just like sneaking it into your dorm room.

Since this movie culminates with graduation, it seemed only appropriate that "Pomp and Circumstance" played in the background until the bitter end, just like the entrance of graduates at any and all graduation ceremonies. It's hell for the musicians, so welcome to my hell.

We Watched It So You Don't Have To - "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993)

If you love Mel Brooks, go for it! If you are an undecided Mel Brooks watcher...maybe skip this one. For 1993's "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" episode, Boo asked for (and got!) her male co-host/love of her life to BECOME a man in tights. Requests for a picture were politely declined.

While wearing tights, AP created a custom "Men In Tights" cocktail with gin, fresh cranberries and cinnamon - look for the ratios on our social sites.

Eventually, Boo figured out how to pronounce Cary Elwes' name and we laughed our asses off about most of the things in the article linked below. Join us for the next one...Back To School starring Rodney Dangerfield. No, I don't know why, either.

We looked for "Scrooged"...found this...and now it's a staple in our family. A throwback to the 1970's variety shows, this is a thing that, like, inexplicably has a LOT of recognizable people in it.

We're at the point of the season/pandemic/podcast creation that we're adding "themed cocktails" to our recording sessions, folks. Does It Hold Up? - 1980 "Flash Gordon"

The 1980 CLASSIC movie "Flash Gordon" is a favorite of both AP *and* Boo, mostly because of the soundtrack by the iconic rock band QUEEN.

We'll take a look at the cast, how the movie imagery was influenced by "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and we'll make AP make quick decisions about a fantasy casting remake with director George Lucas, who wanted to make the movie in the first place...

More musical snippets than usual because, well, we can't help it...it's QUEEN for the sake of pete.

Also bonus snippets of the 8 year old's spontaneous reactions to watching this movie for the first time. She's super cute y'all.

Truly one of AP's formative movies, he could talk about this one for HOURS...and Boo had never seen it until now.

Weirdly one of the more...dare I say...INTELLECTUAL podcasts we've recorded, you get a lot of philosophy of soundtracks as a genre and a bonus game of "Single or Married?" for the cast. We truly did not expect to do this deep of a dive into the marital (or *not* marital) history of Tim Burton, but here we are!

Apologies in advance for the sounds of clinking glass and ice chewing. AP fidgets a lot.
