While the crew works to conceal their whiskey smuggling operation, the commander vows revenge, and the full might of US aviation and intelligence is unleashed to find the shooter.

Bottled in Bagram follows the aviators of Task Force Daytona as they fight their own individual conflicts amid the failing Afghan War. Officers want promotions, the enlisted want to perpetuate their alcoholism, and others are trying to sell their used panties on the internet. Intelligence analysts who predict Afghanistan’s imminent collapse are ignored to not rock the rudderless boat of military bureaucracy.

David and his comrades must deal with boredom, devastating violence, mental illness, and filling sandbags in this dark satire of the Global War on Terror. Fans of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 and W.C. Heinz’s MASH may enjoy this take on a modern war.

Lynne O’Donnell is a journalist with 30 years of experience. She was in Northern Afghanistan when US troops first entered the country in 2001 and was in Kabul last year when the country ultimately fell to the Taliban. Between that time she was a correspondent, eventually becoming the Kabul bureau chief for the French news agency AFP and then the Associated Press from 2009 to 2017. She now writes for publications such as Foreign Policy and the South China Morning Post, and can be found on Substack. She holds a Master’s Degree in War Studies from Kings College London, and has authored two books: High Tea in Mosul: The True Story of Two Englishwomen at War, released in 2007, and a yet unreleased book titled From the Frontline: Women Reporting War. Episode 17: Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Northern Alliance, and Afghan Twitter

This week we go back to the 1970's and explain the creation of the Mujahideen in direct response to the communist takeover and Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, and how the United States came to arm them. We talk about the origin, rise, and death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Lion of Panjshir, and the Northern Alliance, a conglomerate of fighters from northern Afghanistan that resisted the Taliban in the 1990s. And with the Taliban today firmly in control of 33 out of 34 provinces, we discuss the resistance that has been created in the one province that has held out, Panjshir, led by Ahmad Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud.

This week we sat down with Helal "Leo" Dur, owner and operator of the Kabob House on Kandahar Airfield, and his wife Homa Mohammad. Together, Leo and Homa are the owners of Afghan Kabob in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Kabob House was a central part of our lives in Afghanistan. It's where we ordered food at least every Friday for dinner before cigar night. With Kandahar Airfield now closed down, we took this time to talk with Leo and Homa about their experiences as restaurateurs in North Carolina. Leo also told us just how difficult it was to run a restaurant on a military base in Southern Afghanistan, and why he chose to do so. They also gave us their unique perspectives as Afghan-Americans on Afghanistan's recent history and near future.

Episode 11: ISR, CAS, and the Afghan Air Force

This week we discussed the various intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets that were deployed in Afghanistan in support of intelligence collection and training for our Afghan counterparts. Another guest joins us to help explain those processes as well as to help shed light on some of the office politics and misuse of assets that got in the way of effective ISR tasking. We also discuss the role of close air support (CAS) and address what the future of CAS looks like in an Afghan Air Force without US and NATO contractors on site to assist in upkeep and training. We also spent a little time talking about the current state of the Afghan Air Force in general and what can possibly be expected in the immediate future. At the beginning of the episode we share a current news story about a favorite restaurant of ours from the Boardwalk during our time in Kandahar.

In the second half we talk about the rapid Taliban gains in the two months since this podcast started and address the idea of staying in Afghanistan in order to justify those that gave their lives during the war.

Episode 5: The Taliban

In this week's episode we discuss all things Taliban. Created in 1994 by local village mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban would eventually become the governing body in Afghanistan in 1996. The Taliban's lack of experience led to a rocky tenure as the governing body before their leadership ultimately fled to Pakistan in the wake of 9/11. The Taliban became an insurgent movement, taking advantage of the corruption and ineffectiveness of the Afghan government, which would help position them to potentially once again become the ruling body in Afghanistan in 2021.
