700-plus steps down, a windy ledge under a limestone roof, and a cliffside “apartment” complex that once held a thriving community. I’m Craig Nitromedic, and I’m taking you along the Island Trail at Walnut Canyon outside Flagstaff for a fast, grounded tour of one of Arizona’s most memorable archaeological sites.

As we walk, we look closely at how the rooms were built and expanded over time, why the limestone overhang matters, and what the layout suggests about family growth, storage, and daily life. We also talk about the hard reality of survival here: Walnut Creek sits below, but water isn’t guaranteed, so seasonal rainfall and snowmelt would have shaped how people stored water and planned ahead. Along the way, I share a clear warning about why you shouldn’t enter certain shelters today, from preservation concerns to rodents and disease risk.

We also face the site’s more troubling history. Souvenir hunting once damaged and destroyed rooms, leaving collapsed rubble that still marks the cliffside, and I explain why modern protections as a national monument make that illegal now. As I discovered, the falls cascade dramatically into what locals call the "Pot of Falls," creating a cool, misty sanctuary that contrasts beautifully with the nearby desert landscape.

What makes this site particularly fascinating is its geological history. The waterfall formed approximately two million years ago when glaciers shaped the San Gregorio de Cristo mountains. These ancient ice masses deposited enormous rock piles (moraines) and created weak spots where water could carve its way through—eventually forming the falls we see today. This natural wonder offers a perfect example of how diverse Colorado's landscape truly is, with sand dunes and waterfalls existing just miles apart.

Sometimes the best adventures come from unexpected detours. When bad weather derailed my plans to summit Mount Elbert, I discovered the hidden gem of Interlaken Trail near Leadville, Colorado – a 5-mile journey that transports hikers through time to a preserved "ghost resort" nestled along Twin Lakes.

The trail offers stunning views of Mount Elbert (Colorado's highest peak) before arriving at the historic Interlaken resort complex. The crown jewel is the Dexter Cabin, an impressive Victorian-era house complete with multiple bedrooms, sitting areas, and a distinctive cupola offering 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Walking through its rooms, you can almost feel the presence of the wealthy visitors who once vacationed here during Colorado's mining boom.

Founded in 1879 by Mr. Staley and later purchased by Mr. Dexter, this resort once represented mountain luxury at its finest. Guests enjoyed steamboat rides on Twin Lakes, billiards, and various outdoor activities on the expansive grounds. The resort's decline came with Mr. Dexter's death in 1899, but its buildings have been remarkably preserved. In the 1970s, the Bureau of Reclamation saved the structures by moving them to higher ground when developing Twin Lakes as a water storage reservoir – the original foundations now lie somewhere beneath the water's surface.

Beyond the main cabin, the site includes barns, bathhouses (surprisingly equipped with leather seats), and smaller outbuildings that help complete the picture of this once-bustling resort. The entire hike takes about three hours round trip, making it perfect for history enthusiasts and outdoor lovers alike who want to experience a fascinating piece of Colorado's past.

After a quick 0.4-mile hike across the Jemez River, you'll discover a series of warm, soothing pools cascading down the mountainside. The main upper pool accommodates about a dozen people, while smaller pools below create a natural multi-tiered spa experience. Perhaps most intriguing is the small cave adjacent to the main pool – a natural sauna where the warm water makes a perfect retreat from the mountain air.

My midweek visit revealed the stark advantage of weekday exploration. With the place nearly to myself, I could fully appreciate the tranquil sounds of flowing water and the pristine mountain surroundings without distraction. The water temperature feels like a comfortable, warm bath, perfect for soaking tired muscles while taking in panoramic views of the national forest. While not scalding hot, the springs provide a gentler thermal experience that many find more enjoyable than intensely hot springs elsewhere.

Visitors should note the limited parking (approximately eight spaces), potential weekend crowds, and the importance of responsible stewardship. Remember not to ingest the spring water, pack out all trash, and respect clothing requirements due to the springs' proximity to public areas. These simple courtesies help preserve this natural treasure for future explorers.

Hidden within the rugged terrain of New Mexico's Gila National Forest lies an engineering marvel with a fascinating past. The Catwalk National Recreational Trail suspends visitors along sheer canyon walls, following a path first blazed by silver miners in the 1890s.

My journey begins at the trailhead where interpretive signs reveal the area's rich mining heritage. When silver and gold were discovered in Whitewater Canyon in 1889, ambitious prospectors built a wooden pipeline traversing three miles of treacherous terrain. Workers maintained this structure by balancing on narrow wooden planks that earned the nickname "catwalk" due to the cat-like agility required to navigate them. Though mining operations ceased by 1913, this remarkable pathway found new life decades later.

The quest for natural wonders often leads to unexpected discoveries. My journey to San Francisco Hot Springs, tucked away in New Mexico's Gila National Forest, proved to be exactly that kind of revelation.

Setting off from the trailhead in my truck (affectionately named "Black Panther"), I began the 1.3-mile descent toward the promise of wild thermal waters. The trail offered solitude interrupted only by chance encounters—a horseback rider with his pack of hunting dogs, and later, two surprisingly friendly burros wearing bells who eagerly ate peanuts from my hand. These unplanned animal meetings added a layer of charm to the adventure that no developed hot spring could provide.

Reaching the springs required crossing the ice-cold San Francisco River, where the water reached just below my knees. The reward waiting on the other side was worth wet feet: natural pools where thermal waters bubble up alongside the river, creating perfect soaking spots. Unlike commercial hot springs, these wild pools held a different magic—lukewarm waters shared with tiny fish, all surrounded by the untamed beauty of the desert-forest transition zone. The contrast between the frigid river and the comforting warmth of the geothermal pool created a sensory experience that connected me deeply to the landscape.

The entire adventure—from trailhead to hot springs and back—took about 3.23 miles of hiking and roughly two hours, including a leisurely soak. For anyone seeking to escape the developed world, even briefly, this hidden gem offers both challenge and comfort. The springs' primitive nature means they're constantly changing with the river's patterns, ensuring each visit offers something new.

Walking through its modest doorway, I couldn't help but marvel at the lives of those early rangers who earned only $60 monthly while supplying their horses and equipment. Beyond the cabin lies the prize that draws most visitors—extensive petroglyph panels that require a river crossing to access. These aren't simple graffiti but complex symbols pecked into stone using primitive tools. Birds, anthropomorphic figures, animals, and geometric patterns cover the rock faces in a protected alcove. I recently visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was able to explore the Pecos Wilderness Backpacking to Lake Katherine. The trail thru the Pecos Wilderness is definitely not for the faint of heart as it has a significant elevation change of about 5,500 feet and a one-way distance of just under 8 miles when starting from the Santa Fe Ski Area.
