Meet Jeff Cagandahan, isang proud intersex man at human rights activist, na siyang co-founder ng Intersex Philippines at co-chair ng Intersex Asia. Di biro ang pinagdaanan ni Jeff na embarrassment at discrimination bilang intersex. Kung kaya't nagsagawa siya ng petition sa korte para palitan ang kanyang pangalan at kasarian, once and for all.

In a landmark ruling by no less than the Supreme Court last 2008, Jeff, who was assigned female ("Jennifer") at birth, became the first-ever Filipino to win such a case.

65: Queer Love Letters Thru History

How far have we come when it comes to being allowed to love whom we love, and to tell them we love them? Here are 3 moving love letters written by real-life queer personalities from the very distant past.
(1872) The first is a letter written by a 24-year old Bram Stoker (Dracula) to his literary idol Walt Whitman (Leaves of Grass). The letter remained unsent for four years. Finally, on Valentine’s Day of 1876, Stoker mustered enough courage to send said letter to the older Whitman.
(12th Century) The second is a hauntingly beautiful love letter written by one medieval 12th Century nun to another. This was initially published in the second edition of “Medieval Latin and the Rise of the European Love-Lyric,” compiled by Peter Dronke, 1968.
(1896) The last selection contains excerpts from the letter "De Profundis" which Oscar Wilde wrote to his young lover, Bosie (Lord Alfred Douglas) from prison. This fell into the hands of a pimp and was used by Bosie’s father to blackmail Wilde. It eventually contributed to Wilde’s conviction on charges of "gross indecency" and two years' imprisonment.

Andrew Jasko was born into a Christian family. Both his parents were ministers and he was even said to be "offered at the altar" at birth. He lived his childhood according to the tenets of his faith, studied and got his Master's degree in Divinity from Princeton Seminary and fulfilled the prophecies at his birth and became a minister.

In this project, Andrew shares his story - his growing up years and how internal conflict and enlightenment as an adult eventually saw him leaving his religious faith and community because of the severe psychological trauma he experienced.

After spending years and thousands of dollars healing himself and researching religious harm, Andrew is now an acclaimed speaker, and coach in the field of religious trauma and the integration of psychology and spirituality. He is now pursuing another Master's degree, this time in Clinical Psychology.

This is a personal project as one of us on the podcast went through a major transition in terms of personal beliefs recently. Andrew helped us unpack how one's beliefs affect mental and sexual health, among other things.

Pakinggan ang kiki with reluctant yet consenting Titos on what it means to no longer be considered young in our youth-obsessed society. Those weekends spent at home sleeping, the arsenal of menthol rubs and eucalyptus/lavender oils on your bedside drawer, plus ang pagkahilig at pagpunta sa kitchenware at hardware stores sa mall versus sa mga tindahan carrying fashion brands are the things that Titos and Titas lives are made of.

We also wondered why age-shaming is so prevalent in the LGBTQIA2+ community and if there is a counterpart to menopause. Does maturity affect one's bullshit-meter? Who do you choose to let in your circle and when do you decide to burn bridges with people in your life?

More than 45,000 churches today still preach that homosexuality is a sin, citing biblical references that condemn “homosexuals.” What would change if churches discovered the truth — that the word “homosexual” was added to the Bible in 1946 by mistake?

The film is entitled 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted A Culture.

1946 was the first time the word “homosexual” found itself in the Bible. But what if that word was never meant to be in the Bible in the first place?

The first part of this episode has us discussing how we found the film’s trailer on YouTube and the emotional impact just watching the trailer had on us. Our emotions were shared by hundreds of people commenting about how this new research and film might change their lives. We talk about why this movie personally resonates with us as Filipino queer people.

Rocky Roggio, the film’s director, honors us with a conversation about her film. She shares how she might have been unwittingly preparing to do this project her whole life, what the extensive research by experts have revealed about the topic so far, and where they are in the post-production process.

49: Self-harming

So just when we all thought self-medication was confined to taking a paracetamol pill every time you had a headache, it isn't. It includes all the unhealthy coping strategies we turn to when faced with overwhelming emotional states or situations such as over-eating, over-working, over-exercising, etc. But more so, there are those among us who intentionally injure themselves - cutting or burning the skin, picking at wounds or scars, self-hitting, scratching - as a means to cope.

All of these are forms of self-harm, a response to intense emotional pain or a sense of being overwhelmed by negative feelings, thoughts or memories. Weird, you say? And who would do that, you say?

Self-harming may not be as uncommon as you think. Certainly not for us, as one of us on The Project does it.

We unpack everything with Dr. JJ Kelly, licensed clinical psychologist and author of the book Holy Shit, My Kid Is Cutting, a complete plan to stop self-harm.

We may have over-shared and exposed ourselves to judgment on this episode but we are hopeful it encourages others, especially Filipinos and members of the LGBTQIA2+ community, to come forward and own the crooked, wonky, but still beautiful parts of ourselves, and ask for help.

As queers, we did not have to go far to be shamed for not conforming to what society viewed as traditionally "masculine". Some of us were shamed by our families and relatives growing up, and were unable to escape it even when we left home because even our communities made sure we were reminded that there was something wrong with us.

We feared rejection, ridicule, and judgement just for being ourselves, even before we even knew who we really were. It's very little wonder that when 5 queers from 4 different podcasts came together to talk about Femme-Shaming, there were more than a few shared experiences.

Singapore-based relationship counselor and clinical sexologist Dr. Martha Tara Lee decided to take it upon herself to be an advocate for positive sexuality in 2007 - something that we really need in the Philippines, mga Bessies, kung saan pahirapan pa din kumbinsihin ang lipunan na importante ang sex education sa ating bansa.

Since 2011, Dr. Lee has been (and still is) the only certified sexuality educator by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) in Southeast Asia, the leading professional organization for sexuality educators, sexuality counselors and sex therapists in the United States. In short, she strives to be the one of the best sexologists in the world! Taray, diba, Bessies?! She set out to make a positive difference in embarking on her doctorate in human sexuality, then launching Eros Coaching in 2009.

The Project asks Dr. Lee to clarify what a sexologist actually does and the most common sexual problems people come to her for. Layunin natin to empower Filipinos struggling with mental health issues to speak up in an effort to de-stigmatize this traditionally taboo topic. Hopefully this series will encourage Pinoys to ask for help when they need it.

Ito ang kwento ni LEI. Iniwan sa Pinas ng kanyang mga magulang para makipagsapalaran at mangibang-bayan sa US. Naunsiyami ang balak na pagsama ni Lei sa Amerika dahil sa 9-11 at paghihipiit sa immigration. While away from her parents, nakaranas si Lei ng physical, emotional, at mental abuse. High school na when she finally joined her family in the US. By then, her emotional and mental health wounds already ran deep. Adjusting to a new culture and high school life in the States did not help much, neither did somebody very close to her who was a clinical psychologist. It got so bad that Lei entertained thoughts of self-harm and was even admitted to a facility to recover.

Today, Lei is Founder and President of a non-profit foundation TraumaSpeaks based in Los Angeles, CA with a purpose of raising awareness about mental health.

Just some of the many ways we shame women or queers for going against what one thinks as acceptable codes of sexual conduct. Meanwhile, men who are sexually prolific are called "studs" and the "babaero" is matinik and somebody to be envied.

The shame has gone beyond the mere use of words in person. It has transformed into something monstrous that has taken the form of cyber-bullying in virtual spaces by way of name-calling on social media circles, posting of images with malicious captions, or outright leaking of pictures or videos of the "slut" without their consent.

A lot of us are quick to judge. How many times have we thought - "Kung nagdamit ka maayos, hindi ka mababastos", "Kung hindi ka sana nagpakuha ng video, wala sanang kakalat na scandal." All different forms of victim-blaming. And they all sound convenient - until you find yourself on the receiving end of all the shame.

Studies have shown that slut-shaming is one of the most common forms of sexual harassment that students as young as those in grade school and high school experience. And there have been numerous reports of young teens who were slut-shamed who took their own lives to escape the constant torment.

Angela Baysa, host of Pussy Power podcast, is young and independent, She shares with us how she navigated being shamed early on for being confident and comfortable with her sexuality and knowing what she wants.

So, are you a shamer? Or are you an advocate. There is no middle-ground.

40: Mental Health For Young People

How many parents, teachers, and adults know that 75% of severe mental health problems emerge before the age of 25? If this was the case, then why are Filipino parents more concerned about their children growing up fair and tall (admit it, you've bought your kids those vitamins) than growing up mentally healthy? Pinoy parents save up to give their kids grand parties and lavish gifts when they turn 18 or 21 but how much are they willing to spend for much needed counselling or therapy?

Our guest for this project is Kim Sholinder | The Contemporary Educator, who has more than a decade of experience dealing with troubled youth having worked in detention and addiction centers and mainstream and alternative schools. She is currently a high school teacher and a registered therapist with a Masters in Counselling Psychology. She offers a lot of practical strategies for adults (parents and teachers, especially) in dealing with young folk when it comes to important mental health issues that are applicable to Filipino youngsters as well.

We salute all the Filipino parents and teachers - allies - who have always been sensitive to young peoples' mental health issues, especially to those who are members of the queer community.

And if there is one queer story we think you should hear, it is MATTHEW SHEPARD’s story. Matthew was a young gay man who was tied to a fence on a cold freezing night, beaten unconscious, and left to die. His face was so bloodied except for two tracks from his eyes where his tears fell.

This is our loving remembrance to a brother of our community who was taken from those who loved him too soon.

We will never forget, Matthew.

On this project, we continue to update you on where we are on our mental health journey, warts and all.

We kiki about some misconceptions about mental illness, and the misuse of important language that we ourselves are guilty of. Do you know it is no longer correct to use the term "successful or unsuccessful attempt" when pertaining to suicide? Neither did we, until very recently. Yes, language evolves but it remains to wield great power so it is vital that we all know how to use it. And find out why the overuse of the phrase "it's okay to not be okay" rubs these two people with clinical depression the wrong way.

When Robert Kingett was born, doctors said he would never walk. They said he would never talk. He was born severely premature, with cerebral palsy, and totally blind.

Today, his bio reads: Award-winning author. Journalist. Editor. Blogger. Activist. Motivational speaker. Accessibility advocate. Sensitivity reader. And yes, fabulously gay!

He makes us ask, "Gurrlll, watchu been doin' with yo life?!"

Robbie candidly kikis with us about his childhood and how, with the help of his grandparents who nurtured his curiosity and challenged him, he was able to survive the physical, emotional, and mental trauma he suffered at the hands of his own mother, and triumph over his disabilities.

And no - this is no sob story. Robbie shares with us his stories about growing up gay, crushing on the "husband" he's never even met, maneuvering through his dating life and his idea of a first date, and what he enjoys about porn.

He also shares with us some of his many advocacies, like how he pressured streaming giant Netflix into making their content more accessible to its visually-impaired audience by adapting audio description.

Robbie was endearing and such a joy to talk to. We fell in love with the child-like giggles that punctuated most of his sentences. Easily one of the most inspiring people we ever had the honor of speaking to.

Sa round table discussion na ito, ibabahagi ng mga queers ang kanilang mga wishes, gifts, at mga questions para sa kanilang queens. Sino ang napupusuan nila na 5th queen o heir apparent na pwedeng magmana ng korona? Anong bahagi ng buhay ng kanilang reyna ang gusto nilang i-erase? Ano ang dream movie o dream role nila para sa kanilang queen? What was their queen's impact on their very personal coming-out journey? And shempre, nanjan ang kanilang final statement kung bakit ang reyna nila ang karapat-dapat na hirangin na "the best", "the greatest", and "the one and only".

Akalain mong nagkataon naman na ang apat na queers ng podcast ay pinagbuklod na tagahanga nila. Our answers have been prayered! Isang rabid Noranian. Isang avid Vilmanian. Isang true-blue Sharonian. At isang solid Maricel fanatic.

Kaya’t pasasaan pa ba na ang random friendly discussions about movies which would sometimes escalate into friendly debates ay mapupunta sa isang episode kung saan, once and for all, magtatapatan sila para sagutin ang mga hamon na: Who is the starriest stariray of them all?
Sino ang best actress? Who is the most versatile? Sino ang pinaka-mayaman? Who has the most fulfilled family life? Who will leave the most endearing and invaluable legacy in Philippine cinema? At sasagutin nila ang mga tanong na iyan within 60 seconds. Oh yes, time is of the elements sa project na ito!

Magtatapatan ang apat na queers para ipagtanggol ang kani-kanilang reyna.
Pero teka lang. Ang truth of the mother is, faney ang apat nating queers ng lahat ng reyna na yan – meaning, they are all certified admirers of the four queens. Pero for all intense and purposes of this project, they will take up arms in defense of their chosen idol and tell us bakit sila naging tagahanga ng napili nilang reyna. In short, they will bring down the house down!

Bagama’t marubdob at taimtim ang pinaghuhugutan ng paghanga ng ating mga queers para sa ating mga queens, pawang katuwaan lamang po ito at huwag sana masyadong seryosohin. World peace!

Pero 40% o 4 out of 10 teenagers sa United States ay pinalayas ng kanilang mga magulang nang mag-“come out” sila sa mga ito as "queer". Hindi biro ang buhay na pagdadaanan mo kung queer ka. Any queer person will tell you this. Kaya't dagdag kalbaryo sa mga Bessie kapag hindi ka pa tanggap ng mga magulang o ng pamilya mo. This is true whether you're gay, trans, lesbian, etc. You alone against the world ang background music forever? Yung inaasahan mong panggagalingan ng lakas mo, itinakwil ka pa na para kang may ketong.

Siksik sa drama talaga ang buhay ng mga queer! Aminin!

Our friend, Malen, married to a man who comes from a staunch Catholic family teeming with priests, kikis about how she dealt with the news when her adult son confessed to her what she had suspected all along: that he was queer.

Malen offers fighting words of advice and a little bit of admonition to queers out there who might be wallowing in self-doubt and pity, and searching for acceptance, love, and belongingness.

As two of the country's premiere drag artists, these two ladies school us on Philippine drag her-story and drag in the time of a pandemic. They kiki with us about why they got into drag, what they get out of it, and how they deal with a (sometimes) toxic fan base. They identify where the current center of drag is and kung may rivalry nga ba among drag artists from different parts of the country.

Do you need to divorce your sexuality to embrace your spirituality?

The universality of the adage that sexuality and spirituality are two poles on a spectrum that never meet is even more true if you are queer. Many times, you are told that your orientation is not welcome at church, or that you are not queer enough to be part of your own community because you are 'religious'.

It is frustrating and hurtful as a queer person to be seen and treated based solely on one’s sexuality, while society chooses to ignore other facets of your humanity. When it doesn’t matter if you are the diligent breadwinner of your family, a loving son or daughter, a doting parent, a caring sibling, a dependable friend, a law-abiding citizen – and all that matters is that you love somebody they deem not suitable for you based on their personal interpretation of a book that has suffered innumerable translations for two millennia – you start to wonder if the concept of “god” is what they say it is.

As part of our Usapang+Sex Series, the Project speaks to Nancy Shadlock on how she has somehow managed to come to terms with both aspects of her persona to live a life with a semblance of peace. Nancy is a former pastor with a Master’s degree in Spiritual Formation, and perhaps more importantly, a proud queer woman, married with two kids.

Bessie, if it’s worth anything, we want to remind you that you are beautiful and amazing, and that there is an intrinsic goodness that comes from within you no matter how people have treated you.

Today is the last day of September, Suicide Prevention Month.

We opted to release this bonus episode as a reminder to everyone how suicide has become so prevalent in society that it is now vital for each of us to be more mindful of how our friends and loved ones are doing in these very stressful times - every single day.

Death is a difficult conversation, most especially in Philippine culture where it is considered morbid and even taboo. Perhaps, this has contributed to some Filipinos' trepidation in opening up regarding their thoughts and feelings about the subject matter because they are often dismissed and avoided.

This is a purely raw and unedited recording (apart from the intro and outro) of Mel and Geoff just having an unguarded conversation prior to a recording session reflecting on a friend's death by suicide and its effect on family and friends. They talk about learning about the deaths of other people, both celebrities and unknown, and how death - and life - should never be taken for granted.

It is our humble aim to encourage other Filipinos to open up about their feelings so that they can be properly supported. It is important to normalize - not trivialize - these conversations. It is not enough to join the "it is okay to not be okay" bandwagon without offering the needed support and assistance. The lack of available and free mental health services in the country is lamentable enough. Our culture of avoidance and dismissiveness do not help. Check up on your loved ones, no matter how "okay" they may seem.

His phone rang at four in the morning. Richard was in Hong Kong . He thought family calling from Germany might have just forgotten about the time difference. The next morning he returns the call only to be told of the news that no father would ever wish to hear: his daughter Emma, 21 years young, had taken her own life.

September is officially Suicide Prevention Month. Every month should be suicide prevention month. Every day should be suicide prevention day.

In our continuing effort to normalize conversations about mental health among Filipinos, we talk to Richard Wickes - teacher, psychologist, Tai-Chi master, and father - to learn about his ongoing journey towards coming to terms with the guilt, anger and pain, and making sense of the loss of his "Daddy's girl'.

Sexual health, when viewed affirmatively, requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.
2019 was the ninth consecutive year that the Philippines has reported a rise in teenage pregnancies
The Philippines has recorded a 7% increase in births among girls aged 15 and below in 2019, up from the figure on teenage pregnancies in 2018.
Filipino minors who gave birth in 2019 increased to 62,510 from 62,341 in 2018.
There is a strong scientific consensus that providing people—in particular, adolescents—access to information and services related to sexual and reproductive health is not linked to increases in sexual activity.
Population-level trends likewise affirm this conclusion, as interventions such as the HPV vaccine, affordable contraceptive access and comprehensive sex education programs have not led to more sexual activity.
Despite strong evidence debunking the “promiscuity” argument, social conservatives continue to use it as a pretext to block or undermine policies and programs that make sexual and reproductive health information and services more available.

So what's stopping us from normalizing healthy conversations about sex, mga Bes?

While everybody forgets something every now and then – a word, where you last put your phone, the name of a person you went to school with – ang taong may Alzheimer’s in its late stages finds it hard to even carry out a simple conversation, or even respond to their environment to survive from day to day. Without question, it is devastating on the person suffering from it.

Pero gaano kahirap ito para sa pamilya ng taong may Alzheimer’s? Gaano kasakit to realize that your once independent, strong-willed, breadwinner of a parent cannot even feed herself anymore, or even tell you na she is in so much pain dahil may broken hip na pala siya? Isang Bessie natin sa The Balut Kiki Project ang magkukwento sa atin how it is to live with – no, LOVE – keep loving somebody who has been suffering from this debilitating disease.

Every 40 seconds, a person somewhere in the world successfully commits suicide.
Majority of them are aged 15-29 years old.

Despite the playful name, this podcast was borne out of severe depression and previous suicidal ideation. In what is perhaps our most personal episode yet, The Balut Kiki Project confronts the reality of living every day with a diagnosis of severe clinical depression and the thought of suicide looming constantly and persistently overhead.

It is high time we normalized conversations about mental health and removed the stigma.

It is about time we cared.

Meet Mel (our resident lesbian) and Geoff (self-proclaimed queer boy) as they kiki about the origins of the project and how it came from the darkest of places: a diagnosis of clinical depression and a history of suicidal ideation. We dive into why we decided to create a safe space for taboo conversations in Filipino and queer culture so expect raw emotions, uncomfortable over-sharing, and yes, even some tears (looking at you, Mel).

Well, our humble foray into podcasting won us an international-award, making us the only Filipino winners at the Asia Podcast Festival Awards in Singapore! Who knew our fumbling could be so endearing?
