Carlos Mallo Molina was a civil engineer who became a marine conservationist and founder of Innoceana. In 2025, Carlos was awarded a Goldman Environmental Prize for his work founding and leading Innoceana, an organization with a mission to protect critically important areas of the ocean. The impetus for the change was the plan to build a port in a sensitive marine area of the Canary Islands. He is a testament to the power of one person to make a difference.

ISusan Gardner is the Director of the Ecosystems Division for the United Nations Environment Program. Susan Gardner is based in East Africa. She grew up in the United States where she learned to scuba dive. After graduate school, she worked in a remote fishing village on the Pacific coast of Mexico studying sea turtles. She learned in that experience what it means to have people and economies and livelihoods as part of the equation for drawing on solutions. And that was enormously impactful for setting the trajectory for the rest of my career and her perspective today. Susan believes that it is vital to make connections between science, people, and policymakers, and that more women need to be involved in the process.
