Ready, Oar, Knot - Emmie Joanna, Artist

Mon, 30 Dec 2024 06:00:00 +0000

I was very happy to get Emmie on the podcast as like many of you (fellow Tottenham enthusiasts) I have followed her wonderful art journey over the last 4ish years. You can tell her unease discussing herself and then Emmie's enthusiasm when talking about Tottenham or the art itself. I am clearly clueless about narrow boats but weren't we told that there are no stupid questions?! As we Tik Tok Fans know "we listen and we don't judge".
Wishing Emmie, Stu and all of you a healthy, peaceful and joyful new year with many adventures x

Inclusion Matters - Emma, Lordship Rec Ground Junior Park Run

Tue, 08 Oct 2024 06:00:00 +0100

You should see the hard eye roll I do every time my boss tells me about his latest run and yet this was one of the most touching and enjoyable episodes I have had the pleasure to record. I think Emma is so incredible relatable in her different incarnations. All my blunt questions were genuinely because I didn't know and then always opened up these new avenues of storytelling.

I also really enjoyed her talking about the magic of McDonalds in Wood Green as a teenager, I think most of us get that :)

Squats, DIY, Community Repair - Chris Setz, Haringey Fixers

Fri, 09 Aug 2024 06:00:00 +0100

Mentioned in the previous episode so I checked up on the current state of the Haringey Repair Cafes and I was pleased to see how professional they have gotten since I last looked at them. Chis was also super easy to connect with - I think apart from our German surnames we have quite a bit in common (both interested in and involved with one million projects at any one time).
We covered so many topics from start to finish - longstanding fans will recognise projects featuring in previous episodes. I hope you feel inspired - I already am working on a new project inspired by our conversation.

Another excellent small local advocacy group - for the slightly older generation this time (mind you I am eligible to join in five years!)
It was great fun to talk to James from the Haringey over 50s Forum about local issues and then at the very end our top tips went all around the world - James' travel stories would make a great episode or even season!

Care Advocacy Unity Support & Empathy - Samantha, Sickle Cell CAUSE

Wed, 17 Apr 2024 06:00:00 +0100

I learned so much during my conversation with Samantha for this episode. You know how certain causes just really move you, this is one of them. I remember years ago hearing about the Horizon scandal and feeling incensed - I fear it will take a few more years as well until we have a reckoning about the treatment of sickle cell patients over the last four decades. I am so grateful that Samantha took the time to tell us about some of the struggles that are still ongoing.

The most special building in Haringey - Deborah Hedgecock, Bruce Castle

Tue, 31 Oct 2023 06:00:00 +0000

Such a beloved institution - one that many of our previous guests have mentioned as part of their own story. It only really occurred to me as I was listening to Deborah again about the tradition of collecting oral histories that this podcast is kind of that, too - collecting community voices to paint a picture of Tottenham / Haringey during this particular period in time. Obviously a small blip once you listen to the wide scope Bruce Castle covers. Also on a side note - as a teacher I know hardworking people when I see them and Deborah is pretty much wonder woman, she is putting so much into this most special building in Haringey, a true hero.

Today Lordship Rec, Tomorrow the World - Dave Morris, Friends of Lordship Rec

Sun, 15 Oct 2023 06:00:00 +0100

When I first moved to Tottenham, I was actually a runner, I was preparing a 10k and that's when I first discovered Lordship Rec - 11 years ago. I remember experiencing some stunning sunsets. On the other hand, one of my friends who grew up next to the park, remembers watching some more unsavoury events unfolding. Everybody has a story and connection to Tottenham's parks so it was with great excitement that I spoke with Dave about the transformation that the Friends of Lordship Rec managed to achieve over the last twenty years.

Litter and Red Lines versus the Healing Energy of Rivers - Wendy Charlton, Artist

Thu, 07 Sep 2023 06:00:00 +0100

"Broadwater Farm" has become shorthand for many people particularly outside of Tottenham for something very different to most people who actually live there or nearby. I came across Wendy because of an event where she projected a film she had created about the estate and the people living there onto one of the blocks themselves - I absolutely love stuff like this.
The project is quite a few years back but I found it really interesting finding out how Wendy developed it and eventually put on the event. The river project sounds so amazing, too.

Scrap Yards, Hanging out at Street Corners and Meeting the Entertainer - Sean Anthony, Documentary Photographer

Fri, 05 May 2023 06:00:00 +0100

I feel like Sean is doing visually what I try doing through audio - capturing a community at a certain time during a transition. I am a big photography fan and came across Sean's photos on Instagram, I like both his urban landscapes and gentle portraits. What I always appreciate is nuance and Sean was really mindful when talking about capturing the changes around him. It is the season of the strikes so as a striking teacher I got to interview Conall from the Haringey branch of the London Renters Union. I am really happy about the coordination of the different unions as teachers, nurses, posties, rail workers are all incredibly affected by housing especially in London. Sun, 22 Jan 2023 06:00:00 +0000

I am talking with Charlie Brown from 2TR (two touch rulz) Football who runs a variety of community activities around football in Haringey and other London boroughs, especially on inner city London estates.
We talk about how they create work experience and work opportunities for some of the teenagers, what transferable skills they can acquire, flying out to Egypt to represent England in the SATUC World Cup (check out the youtube clip), starting a London Estates Cup and what Charlie hopes to achieve in the next few years. Architecture, Art and Men Breaking Things Constantly - Hanna, Artist

Sat, 12 Nov 2022 06:00:00 +0000

Hanna is so much more than an artist - I was hoping she would give me a snappy term but it doesn't seem this easy. Hanna's passion and enthusiasm for her art and who can make and access art is really palpable. I have been a fan from afar for a little while, I hope I asked questions that you too will find interesting. Enjoy!

Misbehaving Adults, Writing in Bars and Opening a Bookstore - Stephen Fitzsimons, Author

Thu, 27 Oct 2022 06:00:00 +0100

Today I am talking to another local author - Stephen, a veteran primary school teacher so obviously I couldn't resist a bit of teacher talk. His background in primary school education is obviously a bit different but it is interesting how he notices patterns that we then see in secondary schools.
I used to always write as a teenager and throughout adulthood shifting through different genres so I do feel very inspired by Stephen to continue working on your craft and to invite feedback from a writing group - watch this space!

Rex Tracey, Tottenham Detective Stories

Thu, 22 Sep 2022 06:00:00 +0100

Quite early on when we moved to West Green Road, my housemate went to an author reading at the Big Green Bookshop (remember those days?) and brought back the first book of the Rex Tracey series and gave it to me after he finished. I was immediately enthralled to find all these local roads and places from Haringey and the neighbourhood boroughs jumping off the pages. Being an ardent fan of crime fiction and tv didn't harm either.
The author MH Baylis and I have been Twitter friends for a while (flexing) and I finally decided I am "big enough" to ask him for an interview and he said yes and was really enthusiastic, too.
In this episode you will hear my pleas for a tv adaptation and what the future might hold.
As it is topical there is a longer section about Prince Philip, too (unrelated to Tottenham but a bit to Rex Tracey)

Supporting Care Affected Girls - Okela Douglas, Sister System

Mon, 02 May 2022 21:00:00 +0100

As a teacher having seen even just the tip of the iceberg of the trauma of looked after children, any organisation or individuals championing these young people get all my love. This is not an easy conversation and it touches on topics that make people feel uncomfortable but it is important. Okela is very thoughtful and this is a super edited version of a conversation of over an hour.
We as a community or a country will always be measured by how we treat our most vulnerable people and in my book, care affected children fall into this category. I refer to the prison statistics - children in care are less than one per cent of the population yet 25% of the homeless population and the prison population have spent time in care. These are children who we have failed.
Let's try and make a difference!

Not Tottenham specific but to raise awareness about a great app that is crowd sourcing accessibility information for disabled people to make it easier to go out and enjoy life in a variety of spaces.
A great conversation with Matt about the need for an app like this, what have been barriers for disabled people so far, the pandemic and disabled people and his bold claim that disabled people have family and friends.

We did cover the main religions - Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism but also did a quick side trip to the Bahai. Greek Dancing, Oliver Tambo, the Teaching of History - Nico, PhD student

Thu, 11 Nov 2021 06:00:00 +0000

What a wonderful conversation with my former student who strangely enough did not choose German to pursuit at university but his other love: history. As we were reaching out to former A level students for a display, we heard from Nico and I remembered what a wonderful connection he has to Tottenham and it turns out that a few of his research interests overlapped with Tottenham, too. We had a great discussion of his research and background in the Greek Cypriot community, the anti apartheid movement and its link to Haringey and I was then interested in his view on diversity at university in particular at Cambridge. Hope you find it as informative as me!
