Hello, and welcome to Films for the Void, episode #114! I am your host, Landon Defever, and my guest today is an indie/emo singer-songwriter based in Cincinnati, Ohio. For six years, she was the co-vocalist and guitarist for No Sleep Records pop-punk band Mixtapes, releasing three studio albums and touring with the likes of Bayside, Real Friends, and Masked Intruder. The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2014, but she soldiered on with various projects, releasing her debut solo album I Was Due for a Heartbreak on Don Giovanni Records back in 2023. Now she’s back with her follow up studio album Strange Devotion, which came out this past Friday on Feel It Records, and you can catch her on the road with Future Teens and Adjy in late October through early November.

You can check out the band’s sixth studio album Hell is an Airport when it comes out this Friday, September 12, and you can catch the band on the road this fall opening for Militarie Gun.

Hello, and welcome to Films for the Void, episode #112! My guests today are the husband-and-wife duo behind emo independent record label Count Your Lucky Stars, home to bands like Camp Trash, Star Funeral, and Thank You I’m Sorry, along with alumni such as Foxing, Free Throw, and Snowing. The pair are also the minds behind Michigan emo band Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). While the band was active for ten years, the pair decided to hang things up in 2016, but have recently reunited to play Best Friends Forever Festival in Las Vegas on October 10-12 alongside headliners Minus the Bear, Jawbreaker, and Jimmy Eat World. If you can’t make it to Vegas, however, they’ll be playing a string of shows leading up to the festival across the US, kicking things off on September 27 at the Orchid Theater in Ferndale Michigan.

However, he also released a solo album called River of Blood earlier this year which is available out on Count Your Lucky Stars records. Dissecting NYT's Best Movies of the Century So Far (w/ coreyfromhome): Part One

Hello, and welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, episode #110! On June 23, 2025, The New York Times released their list of The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, composed of the opinions of more than 500 influential directors, actors, and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world. Their thoughts on the best films released since January 1, 2000 were collected, tallied, and ranked as a touchstone for cinema so far this century. If that wasn’t enough, however, The New York Times also opened a list for users to submit their ten favorite films of the century. The final list was posted on July 2, 2025 and, as an added bonus, the list contained the Top 500 films submitted in ranked order. Frankly, this was too good of an opportunity not to do a deep dive over what cinematic achievements have stuck with us the longest and learn what lessons we can learn from two-and-a-half decades of cinema. Joining me today is my friend Corey (@coreyfromhome on Letterboxd) to go through both lists, as well as go through the first 30 films on each of our own lists of the Best Films of the Century So Far!

For nearly two decades now, the band (alongside drummer Kyle Fisher) has taken a love for punk and applied it with massive hard rock riffs and a spirited attitude all its own. The band’s upcoming album The Lash comes out July 25 on Dine Alone Records. You can catch the band opening for Heart Attack Man in the United States and Canada in July and August, in Canada on a headliner this September, and in Europe playing alongside Spanish Love Songs in October.

I am your host, Landon Defever, and my guest today is a writer, director, and storyboard artist whose past credits include Regular Show, Sanjay and Craig, OK KO, The Mighty Ones, and Jellystone. However, he’s making his feature length directorial debut with the new film AJ GOES TO THE DOG PARK! For those unaware, AJ Goes to the Dog Park is about a man named AJ, played by actor AJ Thompson, who loses his favorite dog park and how he must fight, fish, scrap, scrape, and sap to get it back. AJ Goes to the Dog Park opens in limited release on Friday, July 25. However, if you’re lucky enough to live in Columbus, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, or Chicago, you can see the film on its Midwest Road Trip tour, featuring the writer/director himself, as well as AJ, in person. However, he’s taking a break from his road trip today to give us a little more insight!

In this episode, Landon interviews Karsten Runquist - a Chicago-based filmmaker and YouTuber who, for the better part of a decade has been following his dreams in the world of film. Whether it’s recapping the films he’s watched on a monthly basis, tiering aspects of the filmgoing experience, or providing perspective in short form essays, his self-titled YouTube channel has captivated the eyes and minds of nearly 600K subscribers. The same can be said for his Letterboxd, as one of the site’s most recognizable users, sitting at 133K followers. However, his latest venture stems to his most recent short film, Dirtbag, which takes the anxiety of inevitable responsibility and combines it with the offbeat humor of auteurs like Wes Anderson and Miranda July. The record pushes boundaries with a narrative edge, inspired largely by Dante’s Divine Comedy, features guest spots from Bryan Kuznitz of Fame on Fire and Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, and takes truly spectacular form through their punishing, theatrical live show.

However, it’s now 2022, and a lot has changed for the band, as they’ve recently gone independent for the first time since 2014 and the future’s looking bright with two separate U.S. tours scheduled for this fall.
