He wants to make sure all staff and patient know and feel what is being done to shift the culture of equality and inclusion for Trust. The second relates to education. He said: “We are at a poignant moment around anti-racist practice and it’s important that we make sure people are educated about what it means to be inclusive and the skills that are necessary. One way is by creating opportunities, developing leadership opportunities, and facilitate adaptive learning environments. “The third relates to recruitment, selection and promotion at a system level, to challenge and change the disproportionate poor outcomes for BAME staff and looking to develop equitable talent management and career pathway opportunities.

Janthana Kaenprakhamroy is the CEO and founder of Tapoly. Tapoly is the first on-demand insurance platform for the gig economy in Europe, and the winner of insurance provider of the year at the British small business awards, 2018, she is listed by Forbes as the number six of the top 100 women founders to watch and is among the top 10 InsureTech female influences, according to the Insurance Institute, Janthana is a chartered accountant and former internal audit director at top tier investment banks.

Janthana began speaking about her early career beginnings, which surprisingly started at the very early age of 8. Janthana would ‘freelance’ from cleaning clothes to babysitting. By the time she reached 16, Janthana moved to Sweden and began working in various part-time jobs, while studying for her accountancy exams and then eventually launching her own company, Tapoly. The Tapoly platform was launched as an answer to the long-winded structure of buying short-term insurances for an Airbnb’s, which she herself had had experience with.

When discussing specific experiences that led to Janthana’s impressive leadership strategy, she explained that thinking strategically is key. Furthermore, communicating effectively is extremely beneficial, creating a voice that one can understand and adhere to with the ability to get people on board and buy-in.

We also spoke about the lack of diversity in high profile roles. Janthana expressed how it is difficult for her to benchmark herself due to the lack of women in similar positions. Although there has been a shift in the number of women CEOs, there is still work that must be done to continue this.

When evaluating the importance of diversity initiatives in the workplace, Janthana expressed that organisations should be mindful and continue to talk about this, keeping it on everyone’s agenda. Ensuring companies are fully embracing diversity and almost treating it as a KPI is important: it should be not a tick-box exercise for one specific type of person.

After the horrific murder of George Floyd, Janthana advised that while this was a truly awful incident, we must take this as an opportunity to learn and grow as individuals. Adding that we must think of the ‘results over the event,’ for example, prompting new policies to protect groups of people, as well as taking individual responsibility.

When reflecting on past role models, Janthana spoke about her teacher at school whom she admired greatly. She would always look up to her as the role model of how women should behave; she was calm, gracious and kind – as well as strong in confidence and belief. Janthana also spoke about her mother, who has used her qualities for kindness and generosity in her own working life.

Finally, when reflecting upon advice she would give to her younger self, Janthana illustrated that she would allow herself to make more mistakes. Shen then advised our audience that if you feel like saving part of your life for later: don’t, be open-minded and don’t close yourself off to exciting opportunities.

If you would like to discuss strategies on how to build diverse teams or are interested in having a confidential conversation regarding the current job market, please do reach out to us and visit our website on www.broadgatesearch.com.

She has a unique perspective on how businesses work as she engages with all levels and functions within the organisational framework. This has enabled her to successfully implement risk management systems that are applicable and best suited to the organisations.

Brenda is also impassioned about transforming company culture through diversity and inclusion and opposing inequality. She has been nominated to set up steer Employee Resource Groups and on a personal front, she leads similar community-led groups.

During this episode, we talk about Brenda’s career in Risk. Brenda believes that the Risk sector is continuously evolving, with new risks emerging frequently. Suggesting it is crucial to remain proactive of the future and plan ahead, understanding that resilience is key. Brenda mentions the importance of always over-delivering, remaining adaptable and open to learning at every given opportunity.

Brenda has experienced inequality in the workplace and believes that organisations that have a meritocratic culture, have the ability to improve fairness and enable equal opportunity. The meritocratic style enables employees to be rewarded based on their achievements and successes, disregarding discriminatory, prejudice and bias-related factors.

We discussed the importance of having a strategic look at how you resource for your organisation and think about HR techniques to improve diversity and inclusion. How can we strategize for the future if we do not meet the needs of our consumers? We can only meet the needs of the end-user by having diverse teams. Diverse teams have diverse viewpoints and generate innovative ideas, leveraging diversity to create more inclusive products and services.

Brenda believes that workplace diversity must be more than a tick-box exercise, and describes the current state of diversity as a metaphor by diversity expert Trevor Phillips, "The glass ceiling hasn't been broken for women, but it's cracking. [Yet] people of colour seem to be superglued to the floor."

Brenda then discusses how it’s okay to not know where you are going with your career, as this will give you more flexibility and opportunity to learn what it is you do want to do. Brenda believes as long as you can be strategic with your thinking and have an end goal enables you to have a pathway, with your journey being fuelled by your desire for knowledge, passion and drive.

We can help you to achieve a culture of belonging where diversity is the default. She also sits in the firm's ethnicity council and has been pivotal in driving the conversation around Black Lives Matter, brought about for the most impactful session that has taken place within the firm. The MCN hosted the Let's talk session following the killing of George Floyd, where over 900 colleagues joined to share and learn about the black experience within the UK. Nadine is one of the four founding individuals who developed the firm's black action plan.

During this episode, Nadine initially spoke about her role at Deloitte, and how the pivotal aim of the role is to make everyone in the organisation feel included.

Nadine spoke about her passion for helping people from a young age, before making her way to Deloitte and working in the client care team. Then, through this, moving on to work as an R&I officer. At the time of the horrific death of George Floyd, Nadine and her colleagues hosted a Let’s Talk session, where over 900 colleagues joined the call; Black colleagues shared their experiences of how they felt at work, as well as being Black in the UK, which helped White colleagues become aware of the issues at hand. Nadine expressed the level of pride and accomplishment she felt during this session and marks this as a career highlight.

From this, Nadine pointed out that there has been a more noticeable increase in conversations about ethnicity at work: more people wanted to help, and nobody is 'hiding behind the curtain’. Nadine spoke about Deloitte’s ‘Black Action Plan,’ launched by over 20,000 people. There are five main strands to this plan; providing equal opportunities, developing people to succeed and thrive, driving cultures and behaviour, leveraging the Deloitte brand, and finally, measuring and reporting outcomes. This has resulted in the firm making a public commitment that there will be 12% of ethnic minority and 3% of black partners by 2025.

We also touched on the term ‘BAME’ and whether it’s a suitable term to use. While Nadine acknowledged that something has to be used, it’s important to recognise that there are differences between races. Nadine explained how Deloitte has been attempting to step away from using the term BAME, and use ‘ethnic minorities’ instead to make sure there is a real focus across society, and people aren’t simply put into the same box.

When discussing the best route to getting into the D&I space, Nadine advised that individuals should look for networks, or if they don’t have a network, start one. Adding that advice she would impart onto her younger self would be to move out of your comfort zone, seek new opportunities and always say ‘yes.’

We can help you to achieve a culture of belonging where diversity is the default. Having worked in less inclusive environments Julien recognises the importance of promoting the benefits of a diverse workforce therefore creating an environment where everyone can be themselves and to be a role model for LGBTQ+ colleagues. Julien opened up about being out in the workplace and how enabling himself to be himself allowed his managerial style to adapt and his communication to drive more positive change. When he was being true to himself he was able to be more understanding which led to empowering the people around him.

Julien then reflected on progress and highlighted how attitudes have evolved drastically but we need to keep up the momentum with the LGBTQ+ movement – with politics backtracking progress and bad habits coming into play. We must strive to move forward with the movement to support equality and not remain complacent as there is always work to be done to achieve true LGBTQ+ inclusivity.

We can help you to achieve a culture of belonging where diversity is the default. Using his strong commercial acumen and deep knowledge of supply chain, procurement, process improvement and financial analysis and he supports businesses through spearheading cost recovery or revenue assurance projects, reducing and mitigating business risks and driving exponential efficiencies.

During this episode, we discussed how to audit has been brought to the forefront of importance for business continuity training and how organisations must expect the unexpected. The current health crisis is driving businesses to new ways of thinking, operating with more unconventional and inventive methods.

We talked about the beginning of Jeffrey’s career where he experienced inclusive and democratic leadership styles, which inspired him to become an empowering leader. Jeffrey questioned ‘cultural fit’ as a strategy when hiring teams, being that it lacks true diversity and inclusivity and can create a monoculture that has the inability to think outside the box.

We then touched on diversity mandated quota enforcements, and how education is more important. Research shows that diverse teams have the capability to drive innovation, improve inclusivity, increase profitability and enable organisations to make more balanced decisions. When considering the term ‘BAME’, Jeffrey believes the term ‘ethnic minority’ to be easier to understand. From the very nature of the term BAME being exclusive as it categorises different ethnicities into the same group and seems to be out-of-date having been created by the government in the 1970s and stemmed from the “political blackness” anti-racist movement.

Jeffrey revealed that “we can’t appreciate the good times if we don’t experience the bad times”; and discussed the importance of not allowing knockbacks to define you, but to help shape you to become resilient and understanding.
