If you journeyed with me through 1 Chronicles, you’ll remember that the Chronicler walked us through genealogies, long lists of names, temple preparation, organisation, worship, and then closed with the final lessons David said he had learned at the end of his life.  It was a book about foundations, but also about identity, and God’s promises, and the careful preparation required for the work of the Lord.

 Now, as we turn the page to 2 Chronicles, the spotlight shifts.

 David has passed from the scene. Solomon now stands at the beginning of his reign, and the writer invites us to watch what happens when a king and a nation begin well.

 If 1 Chronicles asked, “What lessons should we have learned?”  

then 2 Chronicles asks, “Will we live in the light of those lessons?”

This book is spiritual lessons laid out in narrative form. It is a story of devotion then decline, of revival and then rebellion, of kings who seek the Lord and kings who forget Him. And through every chapter we see the Chronicler’s central theme:

 Seek the Lord — and He will be found.

Forsake the Lord — and you will falter.

 That theme will begin immediately when tomorrow we begin with the text of chapter 1, where Solomon steps into leadership with a request from God that many believers have asked across the centuries… “Give me wisdom.”

 So today, as we begin 2 Chronicles, we’re going to explore the spiritual principle that will guide the entire book:

Begin well — and seek the Lord.

It’s wonderful to have you with me again as we arrive at the final chapter of 1 Chronicles. This is a chapter that doesn’t just end the first book of Chronicles; it invites us to reflect on a life.

 All of us have learned lessons along the way. But perhaps the more important question is not, “What lessons have we learned?”   but “What lessons should we have learned?”

 At the end of his life, David answers that question. He looks back over decades of leadership, worship, conflict, failure, forgiveness, and promise, and he reveals the lessons God taught him. And the remarkable thing is this: The lessons David learned are the very lessons we should have learned.

Thankfully, we don’t have to guess. David’s reflections and his final insights, his final act of worship, and his final legacy are recorded for us in 1 Chronicles chapter 29.

 This chapter is David’s last public act. His last prayer. His last lesson. His last opportunity to tell Israel, and us, what truly matters.

 So today, as we open 1 Chronicles 29, we’re going to listen carefully to a man at the end of his life, a man who has walked with God through triumph and tragedy, and a man who now tells us:  “Here is what I learned… and here is what you should learn as well.” ….

In our last episode, we explored chapters 24 through 2, which was a lengthy and detailed section where David organised priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, treasurers, civil officials, military divisions, tribal leaders, administrators, and counsellors. It was a masterclass in biblical organisation. We learned that God’s work deserves structure, clarity, fairness, and flexibility.

 Organisation is still important, but David wants to make something absolutely clear:  Organisation alone is not enough. When building for God, we must be careful and mindful of something also..

 Chapter 28 is in fact David’s final public address. He gathers the nation, he gathers the leaders, and he gathers Solomon, and he gives them an earnest warning about approaching the work of God with reverence, obedience, and wholehearted devotion.

 If chapters 24–27 taught us how to stay organised… chapter 28 teaches us how to stay faithful…

In our last episode, we looked at 1 Chronicles 23, where David organised the Levites for the ministry of the temple. We discovered that organisation is not an unspiritual thing; in fact, it is essential. God is a God of order, and His work flourishes when His people are structured wisely.

 Today we move into chapters 24 through 27, a section that continues this theme. These chapters may look like long lists of names, divisions, and assignments, but beneath the surface they reveal something important and practical:

 If we want to do the will of God well, we must stay organised.  Organisation is not a one‑time event. It is an ongoing discipline. David didn’t simply prepare the Levites and walk away. He continued to structure the priesthood, the musicians, the gatekeepers, the administrators, and even the military divisions. All of that was done so that the worship and life of Israel would continue smoothly long after he was gone.

 And that brings us to 1 Chronicles 24, where we begin to see how the people were placed into the plan God had designed…

Everyone needs to get organised. Large organisations must be organised, of course, but so must small ones. Parents learn quickly that the more children they have, the more structure they need. Even individuals need organisation if they’re 

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1 Corinthians 14:40)

 Order is not the enemy of spirituality, as some seem to me to suggest; it is the servant of spirituality. Organisation is not a lack of faith; it is often the expression of faith.

And in 1 Chronicles 23, we see this principle lived out in a powerful way.

This chapter shows us how David structured the work of the Levites so that the worship of God could continue faithfully, consistently, and beautifully long after he was gone. And in doing so, it teaches us something vital:

If we want to do the will of God well, we must organise ourselves, but organise ourselves around the priorities of God.

So, let's turn together to 1 Chronicles chapter 23, and let’s see what David did… and what we can learn from him….

Today’s passage is a moment in David’s life where the Lord essentially says, “Now it’s your turn., but in the sense of the privilege of calling, the privilege of continuing God’s work across generations.

If you’ve ever grown up in a family business, or on a farm, or in a home where responsibilities were passed down, you know the feeling. One day the family looks at you and says, “It’s your turn now.” It can be both an honour and a weight.

Even if you never had that experience in your family, you do have it in the family of God. Because every believer inherits spiritual responsibilities from those who came before us. The baton is passed. The work continues. And God says to each of us, “Here is your call, now it’s your turn.”

Episode Notes: When Kindness is Misunderstood. (1 Chronicles 19)

Someone once said that no good deed will go unpunished. 

 The concept dates back to the 12th century in Walter Map’s ‘De Nugis Curialium’. This early usage reflects a cynical view of morality, contrasting with conventional wisdom that good deeds are rewarded and evil deeds punished, as expressed by Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologica 

 That’s clearly somewhat sceptical, but there are times when you do something right, and it's misunderstood as being something wrong.

 Have you ever had that happen to you? Well, today I want to tell you a story about somebody in the Bible who had that happen to them and what he did about it.

So, hopefully we can learn from this about how we are to respond, maybe not just in that situation, but generally…

David is nearing the end of his life. The temple plans are prepared. The materials are gathered. Solomon has been charged. The leaders have been commanded. And now David turns to the next essential step of organising the Levites. These are the men who will carry out the daily ministry of worship in the house of God.

This chapter shows us how David structured the work of the Levites so that the worship of God could continue faithfully, consistently, and beautifully long after he was gone. And in doing so, it teaches us something vital:

If we want to do the will of God well, we must organise ourselves, but organise ourselves around the priorities of God.

So today, as we open 1 Chronicles 23, we’re going to look at:

How David organised the Levites,

Why organisation matters in spiritual work,

And how these principles apply to us as believers today.

Because whether you’re leading a church, serving in a ministry, raising a family, or simply trying to walk faithfully with Christ, organisation is part of obedience.

So, lets turn together to 1 Chronicles chapter 23, and let’s see what David did… and what we can learn from him….

Every now and then, something happens in life that surprises you. You do something simple, something ordinary, something you believe is just your duty, and years later someone tells you, “You have no idea what that meant to me.”

I’ve had that experience more than once, and I’ve seen it in the lives of others too.

 It’s why I often say: "You never know how a word spoken today…

a kindness offered today…

a task performed today…

might shape someone’s future.

 David had that kind of experience. He wanted to build a temple for the Lord, a wonderful desire, but God told him, “David, that is not your job.” We saw that yesterday in 1 Chronicles 17. So, David went on doing his job. And in doing so, he had an enormous impact on the future. Far more than he ever imagined.

 There’s a spiritual lesson in that.

Have you ever had a job that simply didn’t fit you?

A role that felt wrong the moment you stepped into it?

A responsibility that made you think, “I’m not made for this.”

 It’s not uncommon. Many people change jobs several times before they finally discover the one that feels like it was made for them. But let me ask you something deeper.

 Have you ever been in a job, or wanted a job, and someone told you, “That’s not for you”? Have you ever longed for a role, dreamed of a calling, hoped for an opportunity… only to find that the door never opened? David knew exactly what that felt like.

 He wanted a job, a noble job, a spiritual job, a God‑honouring job. He wanted to build the temple and to construct a house for the Lord.  But God Himself told him, “David, that is not your job.”

 There is an enormous spiritual lesson in that moment, a lesson about calling, about purpose, about identity, about knowing our role in God’s plan. Because in this chapter, God not only tells David what his job isn’t. He tells David what his job is, and in doing so, He reveals something about our role as believers today.

 So, if you’ve ever wondered: What is my place in God’s plan? How do I respond when God closes one door but opens another? What does faithfulness look like when God redirects my dreams?

 Then this chapter has something rich and life‑shaping to teach you.

In our last episode, we watched David dance before the Lord, and we saw Michal, his wife, despise him for it. We also learned that devotion to God is not always applauded. Sometimes it is misunderstood. Sometimes it is mocked, and sometimes it is despised. But here’s the beautiful truth: Even when devotion is despised by others, worship must continue.

 And that brings us to 1 Chronicles 16, one of the most joyful, worship‑filled chapters in the entire Old Testament. If chapter 15 was about bringing the Ark to Jerusalem, chapter 16 is about what happens once it arrives.

 This chapter is a call to worship, not just for David, not just for Israel, but for us.

 Because worship is not a reaction to circumstances, and worship is not dependent on approval. Worship is not shaped by the opinions of others.  Worship is the natural overflow of a heart that knows who God is and what God has done

 This chapter shows us what worship looks like when God is at the center. It shows us how worship can shape a community. It shows us how worship strengthens a believer, and it shows us how worship becomes a witness to the world.

Have you ever been criticized for your devotion to the Lord? Most believers have experienced it, but it comes in all shapes and sizes.

If you’ve ever felt that sting… If you’ve ever been mocked for choosing God’s way over the world’s way… If you’ve ever wondered how to stay faithful when others despise your devotion… Then you’re in good company.

 Because David experienced the very same thing, in 1 Chronicles 15, David is determined to honour the Lord the right way. Not to do it casually or carelessly, and not according to popular opinion, but according to God’s Word. 

 He learned from the tragedy of Chapter 13. He corrected his course. He humbled himself, and he led the nation in obedience. But not everyone approved. Some despised him for it. Some misunderstood him and some mocked his devotion.

 And how David responded, and how we see he handled the criticism, the contempt, and misunderstanding, is not only fascinating, but also deeply instructive for us today.

If you’ve ever wondered what God’s blessing really looks like in the life of a believer — not in theory, not in abstraction, but in real, lived experience — then 1 Chronicles chapter 14 is a chapter you don’t want to miss. Because tucked inside this short but compelling chapter is a portrait of David at his best: a man walking in step with God, listening to God, depending on God, and experiencing God’s blessing in unmistakable ways.

 And here’s the remarkable thing: the blessings in David’s life in this chapter are not random. They’re not accidental. They’re not mysterious because they flow from very specific choices David makes… Choices that you and I have to make all the time.

 1 Chronicles 14 shows us:

 How God blesses a life that seeks Him,

How God blesses a life that obeys Him,

How God blesses a life that consults Him,

And how God blesses a life that honours Him.

 This chapter is filled with examples — practical, personal, spiritual examples — of what God’s blessing looks like when a believer walks closely with Him, and it’s a chapter that quietly asks each of us:

 Do you want God’s blessing in your life?

We’re going to see how God blessed David, and God blessed David.

And we will also discover how those same principles apply to us, right now, in our own lives, in our own homes, in our own walk with the Lord.

 David has just become king. The nation is united. The mighty men have gathered. The tribes have pledged loyalty. Joy is rising in Israel like the dawn of a new day. And David’s first great desire is a noble one: to bring the ark of God back into the centre of Israel’s life. It’s a beautiful desire. It’s a holy desire. It’s the right desire.

 But in this chapter, we discover something sobering: A right desire carried out in the wrong way can lead to disaster.

In 1 Chronicles chapters 11 and 12, we meet all the king’s men. Not the ones who failed to put Humpty Dumpty back together again, but the ones God gathered around David to build a kingdom, establish a throne, and shape the future of Israel.

 These chapters mark a dramatic shift in the book. Saul’s tragic story has ended in chapter 10. And now David’s story begins.

 In chapter 11, we see David crowned king in the first three verses. Then he captures and occupies the city of Jerusalem. The city that will become the spiritual heartbeat of Israel. 

Now, if someone is simply reading through the Bible, they’re going to hit this long list of names and probably think, “Oh no… another genealogy.” They may skim it. They may skip it. They may wonder why it’s even there. But these names are not filler, and they should not be thought of as boring because they contain a spiritual lesson that every believer needs to hear.

 What is that lesson? What do these warriors, leaders, and loyal followers teach us?

 Well, let’s open our Bibles to 1 Chronicles 11, and let’s find out together who the king's men where….

Episode Notes: Why Does God Allow Some People to Die Before Their Time. (1 Chronicles 10 1-14)

Today we begin a new chapter — literally and spiritually in our journey through 1 Chronicles. For nine chapters, we’ve walked through names, families, tribes, and genealogies. We’ve traced Israel’s story from Adam to Abraham, from Judah to Benjamin, from exile to restoration. And now, with chapter 10, the Chronicler shifts gears.

 This is considered by some an ominous chapter; it’s certainly a surprising chapter, and it raises a question that many believers have asked at one time or another: Why does it seem like God allows some people to die before their time?

 Saul’s death feels premature. It feels tragic. It feels like a life cut short, a man who began with promise but ended in disaster. And the Chronicler wants us to wrestle with that. 

But he also wants us to see something deeper, something personal: God is sovereign over life and death. God is just in His judgments, and God is faithful even when His people are not.

 1 Chronicles 10 is not simply a battlefield report. It is a theological reflection on the consequences of unfaithfulness and on God's mercy in raising up a new king, a new hope, and a new future.

Episode Notes: Our Family Tree - Part Three. (1 Chronicles Chapters 8&9)

Today we arrive at the final movement of the great genealogies that open the book of 1 Chronicles. Chapters 1 through 9 contain three sweeping genealogies, three great family trees, each with its own purpose, its own emphasis, and its own spiritual message.

 The first genealogy highlighted God’s covenants with Abraham and David, the covenant of promise and the covenant of kingship.

 The second genealogy reminded us of God’s faithfulness to His people, even when some tribes were faithful and others were not.

 And now we come to the third genealogy, found in chapters 8 and 9.

 So, the question is: What is the point of this final genealogy?  

 Why does the Chronicler end this long section with one more list of names?

 To answer that, we turn to 1 Chronicles 8 & 9.

Episode Notes: Our Family Tree - Part Two. (1 Chronicles Chapters 4-7)

Welcome back to the podcast. Today we continue our journey through the opening chapters of 1 Chronicles, a journey through names, families, tribes, and stories that stretch across centuries. If you joined us for Episode One, you’ll remember that we explored the sweeping genealogy from Adam all the way to the exile. 

Now, in Our Family Tree – Part 2, we turn to chapters 4 through 7, where the Chronicler continues tracing the tribal lines of Israel. 

 These chapters may look like more of the same, more names, more lists, more genealogies, but tucked inside them are flashes of story, hints of character, and moments of spiritual insight that reveal how God works through ordinary people and imperfect families.

 In these chapters, we meet:

 The tribe of Judah, with its mixture of heroes and failures.

The tribe of Simeon, whose story reminds us how choices shape destiny.

The tribe of Reuben, the firstborn who forfeited his privilege.

The tribe of Levi, the priestly line entrusted with worship, and the tribes of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, and Ephraim, each carrying their own history, strengths, and scars.

These chapters will show us how God preserves identity even through exile and how He weaves His purposes through both white eagles and black sheep.

 It also demonstrates how He honours faithfulness across generations, and how every tribe, every family, every name plays a part in preparing for His presence.

 So today, we’re going to slow down, walk through these tribal genealogies, and discover the spiritual treasures hidden inside them. Because behind every name is a story. Behind every tribe is a calling. And behind every genealogy is a God who remembers His people.

Episode Notes: Putting on the Armour of God: The Whole Book of Ephesians - Our Calling Determines Our Conduct. 

What determines how we should live our lives?  

Some psychiatrists would say that there are unconscious forces driving our subconscious. Not everyone would go that far, but many would say that our past experiences shape our present and future behaviours.

Some would simply say it is a desire for pleasure. They just want to be happy and enjoy their life, and they might say something along the lines of “ I just want to be happy”. 

For others, it is a drive for power or influence. They want to be in a position of influence, either through the job or by holding a position of political power.

A lot of people live for possessions. They try to achieve satisfaction in life through the accumulation of things. But many find their possessions soon possess them.

Many Christians would say that we don’t need to be driven by these base desires and motivations, and that we can have more control over ourselves than we do over our past experiences or our subconscious mind. Many Christians believe we can rely on something greater outside of ourselves than our own resources.

The Bible has many things to say about how we should live our lives, and the book of Ephesians has been particularly helpful in this area. 

In this book, I’ve been going through this famous letter of the Apostle Paul.  But now, before I finish, I want to summarise it by taking an overview of what I believe Paul was trying to get across. 

To try and see the whole forest as well as the individual trees, the big picture, so to speak. It's one thing to open the Bible and find a verse that is meaningful for you, but sometimes it is another thing entirely to see that verse, in its context of a paragraph, and that paragraph within the context of the book, and that is what I want to do this time. 

I want us to run through all six chapters of the book because this book, as much as any book in the Bible, tells us what should determine the way we should live our lives. Importantly is also tells us how to do it practically and apply it in real life….

Episode Notes: Putting on the Armour of God. (Ephesians 6: 10-20)

I think there are several ways to describe the Christian life. Even the bible describes it in different ways. 

If you just started reading the Bible in Genesis and continued through the Old Testament, you might conclude that what God really just wants is for us to obey him. Keep reading; you'll discover that, in the New Testament, in places like John, it refers to the spiritual life as living in Christ. 

Get to Luke's, and it seems to emphasize being filled with the Holy Spirit and thereby living the Spirit-filled life. However, here in the book of Ephesians, Paul uses the metaphor to describe the spiritual life as a walk, and he uses that image over and over again. 

If spiritual life is described as a walk in which we obey God's revealed word, living in Christ and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit, what should that walk look like? 

We are told there is not just difficult terrain to navigate, but there are dangers in the spiritual life. The Bible tells us there are wild beasts along the way waiting to attack and destroy. In addition, the New Testament warns us that we have an adversary who stalks the believer’s life journey like a hungry lion seeking to devour us. 

The question we are going to consider in this passage is: how do we protect ourselves along the journey that is the spiritual life? If there's a lion about to pounce on us, is there any kind of defence system that we have? 

Well, I believe if we study this passage closely, we will find the answer is an emphatic yes.  Paul describes the defence system for us in vivid detail in Ephesians chapter 6, beginning in verse 10.

Episode Notes:  Dealing with Authority (Ephesians 6: 5-9)

Do we work better when the boss is watching? What motivates us to work when the boss is not watching? I myself have been an employee and an employer.  I've been the boss, and I've been the one under someone else's authority. I've been an employed team manager, an owner of a company that employed others, and a Pastor of a church. 

So, what determines our actions and our attitudes at work?

When it comes to the secular workplace, in my experience, it seems to me that most people work for financial reasons. However, it is not just the desire for that money that determines what people do. Other factors can be things like how much they are appreciated by their bosses and their relationship with fellow workers.

I personally don’t believe that any of these motivations are wrong in themselves. Working for money or the approval of others or even to accept a higher-paying job if one comes along, all those motivations are perfectly legitimate. 

What I want to ask today is what our spiritual motivation should be?  

As believers in Jesus Christ, are there spiritual reasons for how we should approach work, or for how we behave if we are given authority over others?

As we've been going through the book of Ephesians, we have come to a passage that addresses these very issues. This passage is helpful as it speaks to those who are working under authority, and then it turns around and also speaks to those who are in positions of authority. 

These verses tell us what our actions and our attitudes at work should be like, whether we are in charge or under someone else’s authority.

Episode Notes:  Walking in Submission - Advice for Christian Marriage. (Ephesians 5: 21-33) 

 The text now turns to one of the most practical, most needed, and let’s be honest, most misunderstood subjects in the entire New Testament: Because we are advised to walk in submission. And we are going to consider it in the context of where most people live, this aspect of the Christian walk out that is within marriage. 

 With so many marriages falling apart today, with so many couples struggling, with so much confusion about roles, expectations, and responsibilities, with so much advice given online by so-called influencers, one of the greatest needs in our society is a clear, healthy, godly model of marriage. A model people can look at and say, “If we lived like that, we would have a strong, joyful, lasting marriage.”

 I wonder if you know a couple like that? A couple whose marriage you would gladly recommend as a model for others?

 I think many of us might struggle to think of one, but the good news is this. God Himself has given us the perfect model for marriage. Not a cultural model, not a modern model, not a traditional model, and certainly not a psychological model.

 A biblical model. A Christ‑centred model. A Spirit‑filled model.

 And Paul lays it out for us in Ephesians 5.

 Now, some of you might be thinking. “I’m not married — why do I need this?” Let me tell you why.

 If you’re single, you need this more than married people do. Married people are already in the middle of their story; they’re already living out the consequences of the choices they made.

 But if you’re single, you still have the opportunity to choose wisely, to prepare well, to know what to look for, and to build your expectations on God’s design rather than the world’s confusion.

 And even if you’re single and have no plans to marry, you still need this passage.

 Why?

 Because you know married people. You will be asked for advice. You will be asked to pray. You might be asked to support, encourage, or guide, and you need to know what God says, so you can help others wisely.

 So today, we are going to look at:

 ·         God’s model for marriage,

·         The meaning of biblical submission,

·         The sacrificial love of Christ,

·         And how marriage becomes a living picture of the relationship between Christ and His church.

 And it all begins with one foundational verse:

 “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21)

 This is the doorway into everything that follows.

 Before Paul speaks to wives, before he speaks to husbands, before he speaks about roles, before he even speaks about love and sacrifice, he lays down this principle:

 The Christian life is a life of mutual submission. A life shaped by Christlike humility. A life marked by self‑giving love.

 This is the heartbeat of Christian marriage. This is the heartbeat of Christian relationships. This is the heartbeat of the gospel….

Welcome back, friends.

 It’s a joy to have you with me again as we continue our time together working through Paul’s magnificent letter to the Ephesians. A letter that has been guiding us step by step through what it means to live out our calling in Christ.  

We’ve already explored what it means to: 

Walk in unity,

Walk in truth,

Walk in honesty,

Walk in kindness,

Walk in forgiveness,

And walk in love.

 And now, Paul takes us into one of the most beautiful and profound metaphors in the entire New Testament — the call to walk in the light.

 Light and darkness are among the Bible’s most powerful images.

 From the opening words of Genesis, “Let there be light,” to the final chapters of Revelation where “the Lamb is its lamp”, Scripture uses light to describe God’s presence, God’s purity, God’s truth, and God’s transforming power.

 So today, we’re going to explore what it means to be “light in the Lord.”

How the light of Christ changes us, how we live as children of light, 

and how the light exposes, heals, and transforms everything it touches….

 And now, as we step into chapter 5, Paul brings us to the very heart of the Christian life, the summit, the pinnacle, the crowning virtue:

 Walking in love.

Episode Notes:  Walking in Kindness. (Ephesians 4  31-32)

We’ve been walking together through Ephesians 4 — a chapter where Paul takes the great truths of the gospel and brings them right down into the everyday details of life.

He has shown us that spiritual growth is not something vague or mystical. It is practical, it is observable, and it is lived out in the ordinary moments of our day.

So far, chapter 4 has taught us to:

To speak the truth with honesty and compassion

To handle anger in a righteous, disciplined way

To work diligently and generously

To use our words to build people up, not tear them down

And now, as Paul brings this section of the letter to a close, he gives us two of the most beautiful, but most challenging, and most Christ‑like commands in the entire chapter:

“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender‑hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

(Ephesians 4:31–32)

This is where the whole chapter has been leading. This is the destination of our “walk in righteousness.” This is what spiritual maturity looks like when it finally takes root in the heart and life of the believer.

So today, we begin exploring what it means to walk in kindness….

Episode Notes: Building People Up. (Ephesians 4: 29–30)

We often hear people described as “a good person.” You hear it at funerals more than anywhere else. No matter what the person was really like.  It’s a kind of cultural politeness, a way of smoothing the rough edges of a life with a gentle, vague compliment. But Scripture rarely uses the word good to describe human beings. In fact, Jesus Himself said:

“No one is good — except God alone.”

 Instead, the Bible uses a different word: Righteous.

 We don’t use that word much today. You don’t often hear someone say, “He’s a righteous man,” or “She’s a righteous woman.” But the Bible uses it constantly. And in Ephesians 4, Paul tells us that the goal of the Christian life is to grow into the likeness of Christ, to become righteous as He is righteous.

 And how do we do that? Paul says we must put off the old self and put on the new. Put off lying, put on truth. Put off sinful anger, put on righteous indignation. Put off stealing, put on honest work, and generous giving.

 And today, Paul adds another item to the list.

Sometimes Scripture tells us things we think we already know. Now and then, I find myself teaching a verse that seems so obvious, so basic, so universally accepted, that I wonder why Paul even needed to say it…. And that is exactly where we are today.

The verse before us is one that most people, Christian or not, would agree with on the surface. It doesn’t sound controversial. It doesn’t sound complicated. It doesn’t sound theological.

But the question is: Why does Paul talk about stealing to Christians?

Is there more going on here than meets the eye? Is Paul saying something deeper than the obvious? Is this verse about more than simply “don’t steal”?

Today's episode is not about avoiding anger, suppressing it, or even pretending anger doesn’t exist.  It’s more about managing anger. Understanding anger. And — believe it or not — sometimes expressing anger….

 Our single verse today: “ ‘In your anger do not sin’ do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,…” (Ephesians 4:26)

 Or, as the King James Version puts it: “Be ye angry, and sin not.”

 That’s a command—a biblical imperative. So, which is it? How can he command anger in verse 26 and condemn anger in verse 31? The answer is simple — and insightful:

Episode Notes:  Walking in Righteousness - Speaking the Truth in Love. (Ephesians 4: 25)

Saved by Grace, United in One Body.

 Earlier in this letter, Paul reminded us that it is: “By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God…” (Ephesians 2:8) We are saved by grace, not by our performance. And when we trust Christ, we become part of something bigger than ourselves — the Body of Christ. We are joined to one another. We belong to one another. We grow with one another. We serve one another. That’s why Paul said yesterday our purpose is “…to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…” (Ephesians 4:12–13)

The Journey of Spiritual Growth.

 In yesterday's study, we were given three foundational principles:

1. Put off the old self

“…put off your former way of life…” (4:22)

Take off the old habits, the old attitudes, the old patterns of sin — like taking off an old coat.

 2. Renew your mind

“…be made new in the attitude of your minds…” (4:23)

Let Scripture reshape your thinking so you begin to think God’s thoughts rather than simply reacting to the world around you.

 3. Put on the new self

“…put on the new self, created to be like God…” (4:24)

Replace old vices with new virtues. Replace old habits with new patterns. Replace old ways of speaking with new ways of speaking.

 But now — beginning in verse 25 — Paul gets specific.

He gives us five concrete examples of what spiritual growth looks like in everyday life. And over the next five episodes, we’re going to take each one in turn. And the first one — the foundation of all the others — is this found in this single verse, verse 25…. Our single verse today…

Episode Notes:  Walking in Holiness. (Eph 4: 17-24)

Some people grow up… and some people grow old. You’ve probably met both kinds.

Some Christians grow up in Christ — they become wiser, steadier, more loving, more Christlike. Others grow old in Christ —attending church, learning the religious language, but never really changing.

 In this passage, Paul is urging us to be the first kind of people, those who grow up spiritually and become more like Christ. And he describes this growth using a phrase we’ve seen before: “Walking in righteousness.”

Over the coming episodes, we’re going to continue to look at the different ways Paul says we should “walk.” But today, we begin with this foundational one:

 Walking in righteousness… walking in holiness. 

So how do we grow spiritually and live righteously without becoming self‑righteous? How do we display holiness without becoming holier‑than‑thou?

 Paul begins to answer that in verse today’s passage, Ephesians 4:17–24….

 So today, I want to lay out some general principles that apply to all pastoral ministries. Principles that work in every situation, in every church, and in every relationship.

 And then I’ll look at a few practical examples of how to support people in real‑world scenarios….

Unity…. It’s one of the most beautiful words in the Christian vocabulary — and one of the hardest to maintain.

 How do we keep good relationships?

How do we preserve unity in our families, in our churches, and even across the worldwide body of Christ?

  Because division is a disease. Division drains strength from a family. Division weakens a church that should be strong. Division distracts a fellowship from its mission and forces it to turn inward, tending its wounds instead of reaching the world. .... And if division goes untreated long enough, it can even become terminal.

 So, how do we create unity among such a wide diversity of people who all call themselves followers of Jesus?

 I believe the answers are found right here in Ephesians chapter 4….

Welcome back, friends; it’s great to have you with me again as we begin the next stage of our journey through the second half of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

For three chapters, Paul has carried us along on the moving walkway of God’s grace, lifting us, blessing us, teaching us who we are in Christ, showing us the riches of His love, and strengthening us in the inner being.

 But now, as chapter 4 begins, it’s as if Paul stands at the end of that moving walkway, holds up a sign, and says: “Now… begin walking.” And the very first step in that walk, the first movement of a life worthy of our calling, is humility.

 So today, we’re going to explore what it means to walk in humility as Paul describes it in Ephesians 4:1–4. 

 What does humility look like in real life?

Why does Paul put it first?

And how does humility become the foundation for unity, peace, and spiritual maturity?

Episode Notes: The Characteristics of the Christian Life. (Overview of Chapters 4–6)

Over the last few episodes, we’ve walked slowly and carefully through chapters 1 to 3 — the soaring theological heights of this letter. We’ve explored our calling, our identity, our salvation, our unity, and the immeasurable love of Christ.  We’ve listened to Paul pray for us — that we would be strengthened in the inner being, rooted and grounded in love, and filled with all the fullness of God.

 And now, as we turn the page into chapter 4, something important happens. The tone shifts. The focus shifts. The direction shifts. 

The first half of Ephesians tells us who we are in Christ. 

The second half tells us how to live because of who we are in Christ.

 Paul moves from doctrine to duty, from belief to behaviour, from revelation to response, but before we dive into the details of chapter 4, I want us to take a moment and look forward at the whole landscape of the second half of this letter. Because Paul is about to show us what a life shaped by the gospel actually looks like.

This is where theology becomes lifestyle. This is where belief becomes behaviour. This is where the gospel moves from the head to the hands, from the heart to the home, from Sunday to Monday and every other day of the week..

So today, we’re going to take a bird’s‑eye view of Ephesians chapters 4 to 6 — to see the shape, the flow, and the rhythm of what Paul is calling us into….

Welcome back, friends — it’s a joy to have you with me again as we continue our journey through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. As we move into the second half of chapter 3, Paul does something beautiful and something deeply pastoral.

He prays.

Not strength for their bodies.

Not strong enough for their circumstances.

Not a strength for their finances or their health.

 But strength in their inner being.

 This is one of the most powerful prayers in all of Paul’s writings. It is a prayer for spiritual resilience and inner fortitude. As well as for a heart rooted in love and a life filled with the fullness of God.

Episode Notes: Avoiding Discouragement When Times Are Tough. (Ephesians 3: 1-13)

Today we come to a passage that speaks right into the heart of something every believer faces sooner or later: Discouragement. And what makes this passage so powerful is that Paul writes it from prison.

He is cut off from the churches he longs to visit, living through circumstances he did not choose and cannot change, and yet he is not discouraged. In fact, he writes to the Ephesians so that they won’t be discouraged on his behalf.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But today I can tell you how the Apostle Paul handled discouragement, because he faced it, he lived through it, and he wrote about it with remarkable clarity.  And to see how Paul dealt with discouragement, we only need to look at what he says here in Ephesians 3….

Episode Notes: What to Remember and What to Forget. (Ephesians 2: 11-22)

Now, as we move into the second half of this chapter, Paul does something very pastoral, very human, and very necessary. He asks a question. A question that every Christian, in every generation, needs to hear:

 How is your memory?

 Because Paul knows something we often forget:  The Christian life is not only shaped by what we believe, but by what we remember.

So, in this next passage, Paul gently takes the church by the shoulders and says: “Remember.”

This is a passage about identity, but it is also a passage about unity, reconciliation, and belonging. It is about the God who takes strangers and makes them citizens, who takes enemies and makes them family, who takes scattered stones and builds them into a temple.

Episode Notes: Deeper Still - Returning to Ephesians. (Eph 2: 1-10 Again)

Today, we’re doing something a little unusual. We’re going back into the waters of Ephesians 2:1–10.  Back into one of the richest, most breathtaking passages in the entire New Testament. Because some passages of Scripture are like a shallow stream, refreshing, simple, easy to cross…. But others… others are oceans, and Ephesians 2:1–10 is such an ocean.

 We’ve already walked through this passage once, but the more you sit with these verses, the more you realise there is more here. This is a passage that refuses to be exhausted.  So today, we’re going back — not because we missed something, but because Paul has given us something so rich that it deserves to be savoured again.

 We’re going to linger, and we’re going to let the text speak again, and hopefully speak deeper.

 So, take a breath, settle your heart, and come with me again into the deep waters of Ephesians 2:1–10. Because sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is not press on with the project but to go back and listen again to what God has already said.

Episode Notes: From Death to Life - What are we saved for? (Ephesians 2: 1–10)

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that the last few episodes have taken us up the mountain with Paul. We’ve stood with him as he blessed God for every spiritual blessing in Christ. We’ve listened as he prayed that the eyes of our hearts would be opened. We’ve explored the hope, the inheritance, and the power that belong to every believer.

But today… He takes us down the mountain, back into the valley of human experience, back into the story of who we once were, back into the darkness from which God rescued us.  Because before you can appreciate the height of God’s grace, you must understand the depth from which He lifted you.

 Ephesians 2:1–10 is one of the most breathtaking passages in the entire New Testament. It is the gospel in ten verses. It is the Christian story in miniature. It is your testimony and mine, told with clarity, honesty, and astonishing beauty.

 This passage will tell us who we were, what God has done, and who we are now.

 So, take a breath. Settle your heart. And let’s step together into one of the greatest passages ever written.

Episode Notes: A Church Worth Thanking God For. (Ephesians 1: 15-23)

When Paul reaches verse 15 of Ephesians 1, something beautiful happens. He pauses. He reflects. And he gives thanks. 

He gives thanks, not for buildings, not for finance, not for programmes, and not for influence. He gives thanks for people — for their faith in Christ and their love for all God’s people. These two qualities, Paul says, are the unmistakable marks of a true church. Not cleverness. Not the charisma of the leader. Not size. Not even success.... But faith and love.

Faith in the Lord Jesus — a deep, living trust.

And Love for God’s people, a practical, sacrificial affection.

Because Paul knows something we often forget. That you cannot love Christ without loving people, you cannot love people without being involved with them. You cannot grow in faith without other Christian believers.

It’s a question we rarely ask out loud, but it sits quietly beneath the surface of every church on every Sunday morning.

Some people go because they always have, and their parents went. Some go because they feel they ought to. Some go because they’re lonely and some go because they’re hurting.

Some go because they’re hungry, not for food, but for meaning, for hope, for God.

…. And some — if we’re honest — aren’t entirely sure why they go at all.

But Paul, in Ephesians 1:3–14, gives us an answer that is far deeper, far richer, far more beautiful than any of those surface‑level reasons. He tells us that the reason we gather, the reason we worship, the reason we belong to a church at all… is because God has done something astonishing for us in Christ.

We now arrive at one of the most breathtaking transitions in all of Paul’s writings.

After the greeting — those gentle words of grace and peace — Paul takes a deep breath, lifts his eyes, and launches into a sentence so long, so rich, so overflowing with praise that in the original Greek it runs for 202 uninterrupted words.

And it all begins with this:

We are…. “In Christ.”

This is not a metaphor. Nor is it a poetic flourish or some sort of a spiritual slogan…. This is about the change of our humanity…..

Zeno of Elea — The Master of Paradox
He is the first philosopher to make the world feel like a glitch in the matrix.
Empedocles — The Poet, Magician, and Scientist.
It is poetry disguised as physics, or is it physics disguised as poetry, but it was the first attempt to explain change without denying permanence.
Then Anaxagoras — The Philosopher Who Introduced the concept of the mind

Episode Notes: Choices Have Consequences. (2 Kings 23:31-25:30)

Choices have consequences. Good choices bring good consequences. Bad choices bring bad consequences, and the Bible is full of stories that illustrate both.

Some made wise choices, some made foolish choices, and the consequences were very different. The consequences are not always the same.

 We’ve been walking through the book of 2 Kings, the book in the Bible that traces the slow, tragic decline of the nation of Israel, and especially the southern kingdom of Judah.... And now we’ve reached the end.

 From the end of chapter 23 through chapters 24 and 25, we watch the final unravelling of the nation, king after king, bad choice after bad choice, and consequence after consequence. 

Today’s lengthy closing passage will show us something important:

 Individuals can make wrong choices, and so can nations….

And both experience consequences….

Episode Notes: Avoiding God’s Discipline. (Joshua 22: 1-20)

God wants you to be His child. Not just in the sense of being forgiven, though that’s where it begins, but in the sense of being a child who walks with Him, listens to Him, and enjoys His blessing.

But once you become His child, God wants you to be an obedient child, just like any good parent wants their child to obey. And for that, He’s given us an instruction manual…. It’s called the Bible.

 But what happens when you step out of line? Well… what happens with any child? God, like a good Father, disciplines us. 

 In the bible, God’s people, Israel, had a long record of discipline; the Old Testament is full of this pattern. God redeemed Israel out of Egypt. He gave them the land, He blessed them abundantly, and He made them His people…. And then He gave them a long book — Deuteronomy — that effectively said:

 “If you obey Me, I will bless you.”

“If you disobey Me, there will be consequences.”

 But they didn’t listen. For hundreds of years, God warned them: And eventually, that’s exactly what happened…. That’s the story of 2 Kings.

 King after king after king…

disobeying, drifting, rebelling…

until finally God says, “Enough,”

and the nation is carried into exile.

 But here’s the fascinating part: One of the very last kings didn’t get disciplined and that’s where our story begins today. Because if we can understand why he escaped discipline, we can learn how to avoid it in our own lives….

Episode Notes:  God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 21: 1-26)

Several days ago, we looked at a king named Ahaz and asked the question: “How low can one go?”

 Up to that point in 2 Kings, Ahaz was the worst king Israel had ever had.

 He made alliances instead of trusting the Lord. He changed the worship. He embraced idolatry. And in the most horrifying moment of his life, he sacrificed his own infant son in the fire.

 How low can you go?

 Well… keep reading because the Bible introduces us to another king, a king who somehow manages to go even lower. His name is Manasseh, and what he does is so dark, so hideous, so spiritually twisted, that you almost want to say, “Viewer discretion advised.”

 You’ll see it by the end of the chapter. It’s a truth about the human condition. A truth about sin and a truth about grace, and I genuinely believe most Christians underestimate it.

So, let’s walk through the passage.

Episode Notes: Responding to God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 20: 1-21)

God’s grace is amazing; we even sing about it. But maybe we say that so often that sometimes we forget just how astonishing it really is.

 The Bible says: “For by grace are you saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not of works.” But consider the backdrop of that verse. What were we really like before we came to Christ? 

 But in some passages, it describes us as being in enmity with God — not neutral, not mildly indifferent, but opposed to Him. And yet, in that condition, God loved us. And God demonstrated His love by sending His Son to die for our sins so that we could receive eternal life as a gift.

 That is amazing grace.

But that’s only the beginning.

 God’s grace doesn’t just save us.

 Grace saves us.

Grace strengthens us.

Grace sustains us.

Exceedingly.

Abundantly.

Above all, we could ask or even imagine.

So, if God pours out grace like that, then how should we respond?

 There are many possible biblical answers to that question.  But since we’re walking through 2 Kings, chapter by chapter, we’ve now arrived at a moment in Hezekiah’s life where God poured out extraordinary grace on him, and then Scripture shows us exactly how he responded.  

And tucked inside this story is something every one of us needs to hear. Something about our hearts right now, not just Hezekiah’s…..

 A phone call.

A sudden loss.

Today, we’re going to look at a king who faced a crisis so overwhelming that the entire city of Jerusalem hung in the balance. And the way he responded gives us a pattern, not a complete list, but certainly an essential, helpful example of how believers can face the hardest moments of life.

Episode Notes:  When Faith Stands Tall. (2 Kings 18 1:-37)

Life is full of challenges.

 But for the believer, there is one challenge that towers above all the rest. A challenge that shapes everything else in your spiritual life. Trusting the Lord…. In all circumstances.

And today, we meet a man who faced that challenge head‑on and stood tall. His name is Hezekiah.

Hezekiah is mentioned not only in 2 Kings 18, but he is also covered in three chapters of 2 Chronicles, 29–32, and in Isaiah, chapters 36–39. In fact, more biblical material is devoted to Hezekiah than to any king other than David and Solomon. He is one of the most significant kings in Israel’s history and one of the most remarkable examples of faith in the entire Old Testament.

 Over the next several episodes, we’re going to walk through his story one chapter at a time for three chapters. In doing that, we will discover what made Hezekiah stand tall when others fell….

Episode Notes: The Counterfeit Version of Real Religion. (2 Kings 17: 1-41)

We use the word religion all the time; we say someone is “religious.”

When we talk about “world religions", we usually refer to beliefs, rituals, and practices connected to a deity. Usually, when we use the word, we’re thinking of the major systems of belief: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

 But interestingly, the Bible doesn’t use the word religion very often. The word, when translated in this way, appears only three or four times in the New Testament, and when it does appear, it’s used in two very different ways:

 Sometimes negatively describes an empty, external ritual.  Sometimes, positively, describing what James calls “pure and undefiled religion.” And if Scripture speaks of pure religion, then by implication, there must also be impure religion. Religion that looks spiritual… sounds spiritual… feels spiritual… but is actually defiled.

 So, what does impure religion look like and how does it affect us today?

 There is a story in the Old Testament that helps answer those questions with remarkable clarity and it’s found in 2 Kings 17, I would say one of the most important chapters in the entire book, and a chapter that helps explain events in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John.

 So, let’s walk through it together…..

Now and then, we hear stories of people who have committed truly shocking sins, the kind that make you pause and ask: “How low can a person go?”

When we ask it honestly, Scripture gives us insight, not just into the human heart, but into the grace of God, the consequences of sin, and the dangers of drifting.

 And today, as we continue our journey through the book of 2 Kings, we come to a king who sinks lower than any king before him.  His story is disturbing. It’s dark. It’s tragic…. But it’s also instructive.

So, here’s what we’re going to do today.

 First, we’ll walk through 2 Kings 16 and see just how far this king fell.

 Then, we’ll step into the New Testament and ask what this means for us today.

 Two passages, but one very important lesson.

We all have traditions.

 Some are personal.

You celebrate birthdays. You mark wedding anniversaries. You gather the family, blow out candles, cut the cake, and take the photos.... And that’s a good thing.

 We pause, reflect, and give thanks.

Traditions can be beautiful.

They can create belonging and reinforce values.

They give us memories that warm the heart.

 But — and here’s the tension —

Traditions can also lose their meaning.

 Because the bottom line — the three‑word application at the end of this episode — is something every believer can agree on.
