In the debut episode of LOTL Lounge, host Silke Bader relaunches LOTL’s audio home for lesbian and queer women’s stories - blending culture, lived experience, comedy, sport, and music into a vibrant hour of community storytelling. 

We begin with Nash, a leading voice in the drag king community, who joins Silke to introduce Drag King Corner, their new LOTL.com blog exploring identity, performance, and the growing visibility of drag kings across Australia.

Next, we shift into lived experience with Diana, 78, who reflects on decades of lesbian life - from secrecy and survival to liberation, humour, and resilience. Comedy arrives with the Tuck Shop Ladies, followed by Jo’s NRLW update, and two tracks from LOTL’s queer‑artist playlist.

Lesbian, queer, gay, bi, dyke, sapphic… these words carry history, emotion, pride, and sometimes tension. They evolve, they shift, and they mean different things to different people.

The Exhibition: Lesbians On The Loose traces a visual and editorial timeline of lesbian representation through the long‑running, lesbian‑owned publication Lesbians on the Loose — now known as LOTL. This exhibition highlights decades of community reporting, activism, and storytelling that shaped lesbian visibility in Australia.

Featured are interviews with Sylvia Kinder, Gail Hewison, Robyn Plaister, and Robyn Kennedy, originally published in LOTL’s 2018 Winter edition as National Treasures — portraits of senior women from our community. For more than a century, Rotary operated under rules that explicitly restricted membership to “adult male persons of good character and good business or professional reputation.” Women were only officially welcomed after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the late 1980s — and while LGBTQ+ people were never formally excluded, many were made to feel unwelcome in practice.

The National Art School, UNSW Galleries and Sydney WorldPride present Eulogy for the Dyke Bar, an immersive installation by American artist Macon Reed, accompanied by a series of public programs and community events. The work resurrects the atmosphere, aesthetics and cultural memory of historic dyke bars — spaces that once served as vital hubs for lesbian and queer communities, now disappearing from the urban landscape.

Laneikka Denne is an award‑winning writer from Western Sydney whose voice has already reshaped Australia’s contemporary theatre landscape. She wrote her debut play Dead Skin at just seventeen, earning the State Theatre Company x Flinders University Young Playwright’s Award before the work premiered at Kings Cross Theatre in 2021 and was later published by Australian Plays.

Now based in Los Angeles, Laneikka is preparing for the first international staging of Dead Skin, bringing her raw, intimate storytelling to a global audience. Her work explores girlhood, trauma, identity and the messy, beautiful complexity of growing up—told with a clarity and emotional intelligence far beyond her years.

Renée Dahlia is an unabashed romance reader who loves feisty women and clever men.

Her books reflect this, with a side note of awkward humour. Renée (cis-bisexual she/her) has a science degree in physics. When not distracted by the characters fighting for attention in her brain, she works in the horse-racing industry doing data analysis and writing magazine articles.
