Emma Dimery shares her remarkable story of a colon cancer diagnosis at age 23 and how a decade of uncertainty was aided by the power of human connection. 

“There’s no reward for suffering in silence or not wanting to burden friends or family.” 

The Dimerys discuss the importance of advocating for yourself, prioritizing what’s important in life, and finding joy in simple things.  

The organization wasn’t built to handle rapid growth, and the system couldn’t keep up. And when the surge ended, membership didn’t stabilize—it declined for years.

The real question isn’t why it grew—it’s why people didn’t stay.

As numbers increased, the experience thinned out. The focus shifted to numbers over substance, and attempts to boost membership (like lowering standards) didn’t fix the problem.

Now there’s a shift toward something different: smaller, more engaged lodge communities focused on meaning, not just numbers.

In the end, growth doesn’t sustain an organization—what matters is the experience people have once they’re in.

In 2013, he became the first Past Grand Secretary to be elected as Grand Master in California.

“How do I deal with this stuff in my life?” It’s okay if you struggle because so many people do. The first step can be the most difficult, but after that you will see that you are not alone, and life can be dramatically better. 

“We have to be creating atmospheres and leaders and people who will speak openly and say, ‘I really do care.’ Regardless of what your issue is, please share with me.”

Well-known for his tireless commitment to public education, civic engagement, and Freemasonry, Denfeld’s legacy is a true inspiration. Kevin recaps the foundation of Denfeld’s pioneering efforts: from establishing the state’s first free textbook system, to the academic training programs which eventually became the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and more. 

Robert E. Denfeld, servant leader, educator, and devoted Freemason, said in his final days “…I only wish I could do more.”
